And if they drag you through the mud
It doesn't change what's in your blood
Over rock, over chain
When they knock you down
Why had she entered here? It was so stupid, nothing good could come out of it. It wasn’t exactly forbidden, at least as far as she knew, but what did she know? It was a feeling that she simply couldn’t get rid of during the last weeks. She had tried to keep telling herself that there was a reason why she had had good marks at Hogwarts. Why she had been able to study demanding subjects. All of this had to point towards her being not just… something. She didn’t even know any longer what she exactly was. She was just so tired all the time and didn’t have the energy for anything but her daily task of street sweeping. She couldn’t even be angry anymore at her task, she was just so empty. There was no point to anything because she could almost see her whole life stretching before her eyes and it was bleak. Nothing else. Sometimes she even caught herself thinking that despair would be better than this absence of feeling. She didn’t understand it and she was frightened of herself.

She didn’t know whether or how she could find that stupor. Sometimes things happened while she was walking through the streets with her broom. She’d see a familiar face or even talk to someone and for a few minutes she felt like her old self again. But then their paths separated again and she was plunged back into this meaningless hole. She had tried to be positive, to believe that there was a silver lining on the horizon. Yet, instead of becoming more positive as the weeks went by without anything bad happening, she just gave up more and more. She wasn’t even quite sure how she passed the parts of the day when she didn’t have to sweep the streets. They somehow went by, at the same time agonizingly slowly and inconspicuously. She didn’t understand herself, but she didn’t have the energy to question why she was living like that.

All the more confusing was why she had now entered Gringotts. After so many weeks of no decision-making, why had she had to follow such a stupid notion? She didn’t even have her vault? She didn’t know, nobody had ever talked about their bank account at Kolna as far as she could remember. It had slipped her mind too until, weirdly enough, today. She had passed by the bank so many times earlier, so it didn’t make any sense why she had thought of this today. It really was a stupid idea, she couldn’t help but think now that she was standing at the entrance of the hall. She had no way of identifying herself. The goblins would never allow her to enter her vault — the vault she had had for less than a year. Maybe she should be glad of that if her suspicion was true and the Muggleborns’ account had all been taken from them. At least she hadn’t lost much money — only all the money she possessed. Her presence here was pointless if not dangerous. She should be working after all. Pulling herself together, she turned around with nothing in her mind but returning on the street and to her broom as fast as possible.

Imogen North

Coming to Gringotts was not unfamiliar to Imogen. She came a a family that had money but since she no longer spoke to her parents she had to work out ways how to handle her money. At least she was over 18 and so they couldn’t stop her from accessing her own money. It was one less hassle, hopefully. With her and Kit getting back together, it was important that she had her finances in order. She knew that may be the least of his worries now given that he was still in hiding most of the time but she had to be sure for her own comfort. They weren’t engaged yet but she knew that one day Kit would propose and she would say yes but she was not pressuring him to do that. They could take their time where their relationship was concerned. She felt they had already been through so many testing moments, they could make it through everything.

She was loving the holidays. Sure, she loved being at the university but she was happy to do without classes and lectures for a little bit. Imogen could have opted to do summer classes but this would be the only time she got to spend with Kit for a long time before he went back to Hogwarts for his final year. She knew that he missed the place even if it meant they were apart. She wished him well and hoped that somehow he would not longer have worry about his father once he was back there. But of course the witch knew from experience what you wanted and what you got were two very different things. But she hoped that this time, it would work in his favour. Then the two of them would only have to worry about her parents but at least she knew that her father would not resort to having his daughters for fear it would look bad on his reputation. That was all that Lucas cared about and Imogen knew that from him having placed her in an arranged marriage. It was outrageous that he had put his needs before his own daughters. As her younger sister approached sixteen, Imogen hoped that her father wouldn’t try that with Clara to try and rectify his mistakes with his oldest daughter. Imogen couldn’t bear the thought of her younger sister going through that.

At least for a few weeks Clara would be visiting ehr before she eventually had to return to the family estate and put up with their parents. At least their manor was large and you hide for hours on end without being found. She just wanted her sister happy and to not suffer from any heartbreak like she had. At least coming here to withdraw money would not be so painful and then she could go out with sister. The witch stepped into the grand building, trying not to look like she was dreading dealing with the goblin, even if she was. She walked in and nearly walked in to a woman about her age who appeared to be rushing out. Something wasn’t right. ”Hey…” she rounded back and approached the other woman. ”You okay?”

It had been a stupid idea in the first place. Her vault didn’t contain more than one or two Galleons, all in all not more than she had had in her room at Lufkin where she had also never dared to return to check if her belongings were still there. It wasn’t like she’d have earned a fortune with the small jobs she had had in the one year she had been able to study. With courses at the university, she hadn’t had much time during the day to work and had been badly payed in addition. Not that she had complained back then and she certainly didn’t complain now about the past. Now work was all that she was allowed to do — work that she neither wanted to do nor could even reap any benefit from. As tedious as standing behind the counter of the mensa at the university had been, at least she had done so out of her own free will. She had wanted to earn money so that her parents didn’t have to pay for her education from their moderate income. And she had known that she wouldn’t be handing out sandwiches for the rest of her life. It was only as long as she was at Lufkin. Once she had her degree, she’d get a job that was both well-paid and interesting.

This on the other hand, would it ever end? Of course it would like all things on earth did and be it with death. Maybe this would be better because it would be a closure after all from her endless days without hope, but then again, she had parents, siblings, a nephew. And it was a sin to through the own life away or so she had been told. She had also been told that there was a miłosierny Bóg, and a Matka Boska and that she just had to believe. But how when the only solid thing in her life was a broom with which she had to sweep the streets. It was something to hold on to when she was walking past wizards and witches that she had once thought were her equals. The broom was a sign that she was doing as she was told — that she was obedient. The broom was what might keep her a tiny bit safe from becoming a sport for a pureblood. In a public place without a broom, she tended to panic. Like right now.

It wasn’t that far to the exit though. A few more steps and she would be out of the building and with her broom and no one would have seen her. No consequences. There was no reason to tremble like she was. Then she jumped, whipping round to face whoever had spoken. After a few seconds her breathing calmed down again and she could register the young woman in front of her. Her expression was not inimical or disgusted or anything that alarming, and yet, Basia had a bad feeling. Hadn’t she seen this girl’s face before? At Hogwarts? She couldn’t remember anything concrete and the other one looked as if she could be one or two years younger. So it made sense that she didn’t know her, especially when she wasn’t a Ravenclaw. She would remember her certainly then, wouldn’t she? There was no other reason but her gut feeling for her to believe that this girl was a Slytherin pureblood and therefore the most dangerous sort of person to interact with for someone like her. Then again her expression seemed more concerned than anything else, so maybe her mind and its association were rubbish. “I’m… okay,” she whispered, her breathing still too quick and her heartbeat frantic. She could only hope that the other woman wouldn’t notice, but that was maybe hoping for too much. It wasn’t like she was good at pretending.

Imogen couldn’t even go about her day normally if she wanted to. She wasn’t sure how others did it, because she surely couldn’t. Everywhere was a mess ands he didn’t think that was an exaggeration. Sure, it was not everywhere but she had come through Diagon Alley and it was there. She could have easily removed herself from it all and left the country. But her father had taught her to not just run away from her problems. Ironic really since he had been the very person to cause the biggest problem for her of recent times. Still she now had one less problem to deal with. She was lucky. Thanks to her blood and her connections, she had very little worries in the world right now. Sure, she constantly worried about Kit but she also knew she had to trust him to not want to go out and put himself in a precarious situation with his father around. She knew he was unlikely to do something so drastic but then again he was not the most calm person she knew. Imogen just wanted him safe and right now that was playing with his mental health but she would do what she could. He gone to such great lengths to escape his father and go on the run while having everyone think that he was dead before returning to those that loved him. She now had to protect him. She knew he would want it to be the other way around but right now she was the best person to be doing that in their relationship.

Sometimes that included her running the day to day errands for the both of them. Today was visit to the bank. She may stop off at other places on her way home but she would decide that. For all she knew, she would need a drink after dealing with the Goblins. They really were far from the easiest to deal with. She had been dealing with them for as long as she could remember but that didn’t make it any easier. But she would just continue to come here. She didn’t have an alternative, there was no muggle bank she could go to. The witch wasn’t even sure how they worked but she had heard they didn’t have physical vaults as they had at Gringotts. That threw her a little as she wasn’t sure where muggles stored their money. She was no stranger to muggle currency but had never had to think about where it was stored, until recently. She wasn’t living in the muggle world but she was spending more time in it. She had Kit who knew that world better than she did but it was the least of their worries now.

Imogen had seen many people around in the alley, she could tell if they were muggleborn if they were not. The former group were dressed a little differently, not badly, just differently. They looked white as ghosts, well, some of them did. They looked uncertain. It was not something she was used to. Only recently no one could tell a muggleborn from a pureblood in the alley as they would have looked the same. It was unfair on that group that now it had been made obvious there were different to everyone else. The girl who she had stopped to talk to seemed bothered and Imogen wasn’t sure why that was the case. She was thoughtful enough to not mention it either, definitely not here in public. ”Are you certain? Is there something you wanted here….maybe I can help you?” she asked speaking softly, she wanted to appear friendly but she still was recognisable as a pureblood if in fact the other witch remembered who she was.

During the first few months, she had been so ashamed of the broom with which she had to go through the streets, singled out as different, not part of what everybody else was. It was the one sign that set her apart most clearly. Of course, with time going by, her whole appearance started to set her apart. When she had gone to register, she hadn’t taken anything with her. It had been late spring, almost summer, so the colder it got, the more her way of dressing stood out — not to mention how her body found it hard to deal with the cold. The winter hadn’t been too cold, so she had made it through that, but there had been a couple of freezing days in early spring. From which she had been saved by a miracle. She didn’t think that she herself was a hero. She didn’t think she had ever been truly selfless. Her life had revolved around herself. Or around her parents, but they were her family, so that was still too closely connected to her that she could consider what she did to them selfless. Being there for her parents, who had brought her up and believed in her, was the most natural thing on earth. Nothing to be proud of.

She supposed that she had done minor things that could maybe said in her defence like reducing her meals to allow the younger Kolna inhabitants to get somewhat close to feeling full up or giving away the few salves she had been able to concoct. But that was hardly heroic. It was simply doing her duty. She didn’t risk anything doing so but only slightly hampered her own comfort, and as terrible as the situation used to be, this didn’t really matter. The conditions were miserable anyway. She still had kept to herself most of the time, and if she had sought any contact, it had been in the Muggle world in the centres where other Polish would gather. But at last her clothes had looked too worn that she would have dared showing up there. The less she felt welcome here, in the British wizarding world where she had thought she belonged since she was eleven, the more she thought about the country where she was born. Yet, she hardly knew anything about the wizarding society there. She might have her brother’s girlfriend to ask for help, but she had only met the woman about twice in her life. She had a hard time to think of her as family as much as she hoped for her brother that she once would be. If only she knew whether she would ever see her brother or anybody else in her family again.

After all, there was still hope that the Muggleborn repression would come to an end. She didn’t have the power to hope anymore, but it was undeniable that things had been worse. So maybe there were people out there willing to help someone like her. Once a complete stranger had risked everything to help her, this had to count for something. This girl now was also offering help, and Basia didn’t know how to react. “I… nnn…” What should she say? The girl seemed so friendly. Helpful. And yet, all about her signed to Basia to be wary. There was just something about how she dressed or maybe just the general air about her, not to speak of the feeling that she remembered her from Hogwarts, that indicated that she was a pureblood. And someone like that would never honestly offer help. This might be a cruel mockery. And yet, if the girl was sincere, then it was very base of her to have such horrid suspicions. She drew a deep breath. “I wanted to ask whether my account still existed,” she said, dropping her eyes to the floor. “And I just remembered what a stupid idea this is.” There, she had given an honest answer. She'd have to live with whatever the consequences would be.

Imogen absolutely loved having Kit home with her. He was finally home and they were back together and it was the best feeling. While she knew she could have come to love Warren in time, she was already in love with Kit and it was impossible to love two people at once. Well, at least she liked to think so. But love was the deepest emotion anyone could experience but with Kit, she found it easy to love him. He was kind, sweet and sexy and they got alone, sure they had their disagreements but that was part in parcel of dating. Imogen could easily see her becoming his wife one day but she would be patient. He had a lot of things to deal with at the moment but she was giving him space when he needed it and making sure he felt safe. She was not going to lose him again. Well, she hoped not. Maybe she shouldn't get ahead of herself but Imogen loved the wizard and wanted to be his.

Today she was giving him some time to do as he pleased. She only hoped that he didn’t do anything that would put him in danger. She had mentioned it to him many times already and she would be sure to tell him again constantly. Kit may have thought she sounded like a broken record but she really just had his best interests at heart. Today was just some time apart while she ran some errands. Namely while she went to the bank. Imogen was glad that her funds had been left untouched when she had fallen out with her parents. It would make her life much easier. It would be better than muggleborns. She had corrected herself a number of times from calling them mudbloods many times until now when muggleborn just came to mind easily. She could see all the time all the hassles they face and how purebloods like her hassled them in the street or just looked down on them. Not to long ago that had been here and she was not proud of it.

But she was different now and maybe it was noticeable or maybe it wasnt. It didn’t matter as long as she did the right thing now, she could call herself a good person. The witch was not happy to find the other blond here looking down. It was evidently immediately to her who she was or why she was dressed in that way. Imogen wasn’t sure if the goblins would listen to her but she couldn't leave Gringott’s without trying. The girl couldn’t even put two words together. Clearly she was very distressed and Imogen would try to help her as much as she could. ”It’s not a stupid idea, it’s a valid question. I can ask them for you?” Imogen said as she placed a hand on her shoulder. ”First, I’ll need your name though, I’m Imogen North, Gen for short” she said as she started to lead the other girl to an idle Goblin who was already glaring at her for likely interrupting him. It wasn’t like he was occupied with anything. She ignored the look he gave her and turned to the other blonde smiling (hopefully reassuringly). ”And what was your vault number too?”

Panicking wouldn’t help now. She had decided to enter out of a whim, and what was done was done. By acting rash or without thought would only diminish the chance of getting out of here in one piece. Ever since the Ministry didn’t have them live together at Kolna, she was even more deprived of information than before. Then, there had been those Muggleborns who were forced to spend their day at the Ministry to be tortured or experimented on or whatever other atrocity she didn’t even want to think of. But they had heard things, rumours, that she wasn’t only desperate to hear because she couldn’t afford a newspaper but also because it seemed far more reliable than anything else. But now she saw hardly anyone anymore. Every once in a while she went to visit Caleb, whose friendship was one of the two positive things she had met with since the registration, but he seldom had any exciting news. To a certain extent she supposed because there were none, and then also there was the change of circumstances. The Muggleborns weren’t so dependent on one another anymore. It was a positive change for most, so she couldn’t deplore it even if it was still far from a relief of what they had to do during the day — without earning any money. But as uncomfortable as the masses of human bodies at Kolna could get, it was company. It was not lonesomeness. In fact, it had been almost impossible to have a moment to herself. But after a whole day sweeping the streets and being mostly ignored, it wasn’t that bad.

She had wished to be ignored here at the bank while she fled out of it again because her intention seemed ridiculous once she had thrown a look into the white marble hall, eyed by the ever suspicious Goblins. But it wasn’t a Goblin that had her now hovering on the spot, not knowing what to do next. It was this girl, who she had no reason to trust. But it was also wrong not to trust. She shouldn’t judge anybody that she knew nothing about. There were people out there willing to help, she had learnt that much. She seemed sincere and friendly, but could such outward signs be trusted? On the other hand, it was horrible that she couldn’t trust anyone. The girl did sound like she was ready to help, and Basia began feeling very bad for her suspicions. But then she said her name and she gulped. That was a Death Eater name, wasn’t it? She had heard them all. Back at Hogwarts the children of Death Eaters had been talked about. She was one of them. But… she was still offering help. Basia hesitated, trying to find any sign that Imogen was making fun of her. But nothing. So… it was better to trust in the good in another human? She’d have to risk it, it wasn’t like things could get much worse. If she was in trouble, she was so already. “N... nice to meet you, Gen,” she said, trying to sound not too fearful. “It’s Basia — Barbara — Kleczyńska. With a c, z, and y.” She bit on her lip. Not panicking. There was no reason but the name that indicated that this was going to end really badly. And maybe the name was only a coincidence? “It’s…” What had it been again? It was over a year since she had last been able to use it. “254. One of the small ones close to the surface. I only had it since about two years.”

Imogen knew that her father would think it unfathomable of her to help anyone who wasn’t pureblood. But Imogen had learned a big lesson in recent times, one she knew that would help her much more than anything he or her mother had thought her. They had always told her that she should always put herself first but she had come to learn that was not always the best approach. Sure it was important to prioritise yourself but she was learning that so many other people deserved to be prioritised too and she was going to make sure that she put the needs of others before her own. She had to thank Kit for that but she not done that yet. Imogen would sit him down soon enough and tell him that. She knew if anything it would make him smile and that was something she strived to. He had so many worries and Imogen tried to lessen then as much as she could now. It was not the time to put herself first now. Sure she had Kit’s support when it came to her ballet but she had to support him during this time. It was a tense time for the wizard and with how much she loved him, she knew she had to come care for him deeply very early on in their relationship even with all the hurdles the two of them had to come to overcome but they were looking better at being together then they had before. She was no longer engaged and for the moment, it didn’t appear that her father was trying to tear them apart. Imogen only hoped this wasn’t too good to be true and that something came long to pull them apart soon.

She knew she didn’t need to be thinking like that. The blonde witch had to remain positive and that was easy for her to do most of the time but when she was faced with muggleborns she felt the need to help them. Right now it didn’t matter if another pureblood walked into Gringott’s and saw her lending a hand to one of them. She was certain that not all purebloods looked down on them though she had not met another who didn’t. She supposed that was the nature of the purebloods she had grown up with. The girl she was helping looked terrified and understandably so. Even when you werent’ fearing for your life the Goblins here could be scary to interact with. Coming here meant they actually looked down on you and for the muggleborn she was helping, it wouldn’t just be figuratively anymore. Giving her name Gen knew that it could conjure up all kinds of emotions and feelings in the other girl but was genuinely hoping to help her, she hoped that came through. As she gave her name in return Gen nodded. This girl had been had Hogwarts but in the year above her or at least she assumed so from what she remembered of the students in the year above her.”254...okay” Imogen nodded and turned to the Goblin and spoke to them giving them Basia’s vault number. She watched the Goblin look disapprovingly to the muggleborn before turning back to her and informing her that there was only three sickles there and a handful of knuts.”Do you want to go and get the balance?” Gen asked the other girl putting her hand on her shoulder.

Just be confident and act as if the world belonged to you. Just behave as if nothing was wrong about who you were. That was supposed to work. It was not possible to recognize a Muggleborn from their faces. They looked like everybody else. Or they would if they had any money. Even if she found it in her to follow the advice that had been given to her still back at Kolna, to always be calm and act self-assured and nobody would guess who you are, she doubted that it would work. That it was true. Not that it was visible whether someone had magical or Muggle parents from a person’s features; purebloods looked neither better nor worse than anybody else although she had heard that some families had idiocy in the family from inbreeding. But she had never seen, let alone met, an example of this custom and maybe it was just a story. What did she know about the wizarding world anyway. Nothing, otherwise she wouldn’t have run to register just because the Ministry had told her so and a good citizen had to do as the Ministry told her. It was what her parents had used to say. Don’t question, do as asked. You’re a foreigner here. You must work hard to earn the right to live here. You must study harder than everyone else to be considered equal. And she had done all of this. She had finished school with excellent marks, had started to study one of the most demanding magical subjects and had fared well until… until all that she had thought true had been negated. No longer university for her. No longer a part of the wizarding society and no longer able to think that she could win a place by hard work. She was in the street swiping the floor every day without pause or pay.

So of course, after a few weeks, it had become immediately clear from first sight who she was — a Muggleborn. She didn’t have the money to buy new clothes or shoes and she had brought nothing with her when she had gone to register. Everything she owned was long worn thin and covered with the dust of the streets. And nobody at Kolna had a wand anymore, so it was impossible to fix them easily. Maybe her clothes had been the reason why she had dared to enter here today. If she could get herself something new, some of the stares would decrease. Some of the constant fear she felt when out in the open would go away. Nowadays, she could be completely alone and yet feel like a hundred eyes were watching her. A bit of money might help against this constant dread. This hope had been strong enough to make her walk until before the main hall. And she’d have run out again if not for Gen. Basia still wasn’t sure whether that was a good or a bad thing. Whether this was the help that it seemed to be or a trap or… or whether she was going mad and saw threats everywhere. “Y- yes, I want to,” she replied. A year ago, retrieving all her money from her account would have sounded idiotic. Saving money was important. She’d have to live off that. But now, who knew how long that money might still be there and belong to her. Better get it now before it was too late? That was sound judgement, wasn’t it? “Thank you,” she said when she felt the girl’s hand on her shoulder. Now she started to feel bad for having suspected her of insincerity. “For helping. Asking. I… do you come with me to...” She indicated the goblin slightly with her head. He was looking intently at some papers before him now, and it felt like an impossible task to disturb him on her own.

Imogen wasn’t the typical pureblood witch any longer. She had trouble believing it herself at times but she knew that this was the person she wanted to be. She had previously detested muggleborns with every fibre of her being had easily called them mudbloods. That was all in the past. Kit was the reason for that change. She wasn’t sure if he knew that he had been the catalyst that lead her to being who she was now but she would easily boast about him changing how she saw everyone. Imogen had been very grateful to Kit and all that he had done for her. Yes, he had died having faked his own death but she knew it had been for his own benefit as well as hers and even that of his adoptive parents. She wished she could have had parents like Samuel and Calli for all of her younger years. Maybe she would have been happier then? But alas then she may have never met Kit and there was she couldn’t picture her life any differently. Kit was trying to stay safe and Imogen knew he was frustrated by being under lock and Key. Imogen would hate for him to be going out only to encounter his father. Phineas has a ruthless man and he didn’t have any love for his love particularly for his son.

Imogen’s father was not so bad but Lucas still made sure to set his foot down wherever he could. He was money hungry and this marriage that Imogen had been been apart of until recently was for money. She knew that, she had been the one to have a price on her head. Imogen couldn’t believe her father would do that to her but she knew she didn’t love him as she had once. He didn’t deserve it from her. She was lucky she had her own bank account and could use that to pay for things she needed. Working at Avalon meant she did get paid but it certainly wasn’t much. She needed to eat and to pay for things for Leo and Hydra and of course there was rent. Her flat was the only thing she had retained when she stopped speaking or communicating with her parents save for her surname. If others didn’t have access to their money and it was rightfully theirs, she wanted to help them get it. She had noted Basia today when she had walked into Gringott’s. Imogen was not one to normally go out of her way to help someone, especially someone she had just met but she didn’t think it was right for her to leave with her money if Basia was unable to leave with hers. ”There is no need to thank me, I was only wanting to help you” Imogen told her sincerely. She looked up to the Goblin who looked preoccupied with his papers before looking back to Basia and nodded. ”Of course, I’ll come with you…” she said starting to lead her away so they could head to the vaults.
