Date:
1/9/14
Location: Platform 9 3/4 and Hogwarts Express

It felt a bit odd starting her second year of Hogwarts, even more so than her first year. All the nerves and anxiety about were gone, she knew what house she was in, and she knew, more or less, what to expect in the year ahead. So there was more excitement about what would be happening, and about all that, she would be learning in the next school year. Amy pondered about all the magic that she had learnt so far and was eager to learn more and get better at her spell casting and potioneering, and everything that Hogwarts had to offer. It felt like a home away from home, and that was a good thing.

Of course, she would miss her parents and the family home back in Wales. It was always tough leaving them behind, but she was looking forward to seeing the friends that she made again in Hogwarts, The Welsh wizard had kept in contact with them throughout the holidays, obviously, but meeting up with them again in the school was something that she was looking forward to. It was always fun to meet with friends, explore the school and discuss new spells and all kind of stuff. To Amy friends were fundamental. Especially as they made her feel all the less lonely, and helped her stop missing her family so much.

This year was going to be different for another reason. This year her younger brother, Donald, was starting Hogwarts. He had been asking her a lot of questions about the school and what to expect. Of course the 12-year-old had taken the opportunity to wind her little sibling up a bit by telling him some horror stories. That was until he grassed her up to her parents and got her a right telling off from her parents for frightening Don. In all fairness to her, she had also given her brother some factual information or refused to tell him some stuff so that he had the wonder of discovering it for himself. Personally, she felt that she got the balance right and did her duty as a big sister.

Apart for her teasing him though, Amy was going to do everything to make sure he was alright during his first year, and every subsequent year comes to that. Of course, they would fight and have fallings out and sometimes he got on her nerves. Often, actually most of the time now she thought of it. Regardless, she loved him and would do anything to protect him. It was siblings where meant to do. Besides which she had made a promise to her parents to look out for him, not that she wouldn’t have anyway.

The 12-year-old hugged and kissed her parents goodbye and took her cases onto the train; she had a feeling that Don would not like it if she was there hovering over him while he got upset from saying goodbye to mam and dad while leaving him for the first time, so she left him to it. In any case, she was feeling a bit upset herself and didn’t want her brother to see her cry. He might think there was something wrong and scare him off coming from Hogwarts. And while the thought might be tempting, it was not what she wanted.

Amy got onto a train and found a carriage with her friends from the previous year in ”Hi girls…” she said with a little smile, before giving them all a hug ”…I hope you guys don’t mind, but my little brother will be joining us. He is starting Hogwarts this year and is a little nervous so…” she looked around her fellow Hufflepuffs, and they all seemed happy enough for him to join them. Now, all she had to do was to convince Donald to join a carriage full of girls…

Ever since watching his sister go to Hogwarts last year, Donald had been looking forward to the day when he was starting the magical school. Of course, being magic born, he knew about Hogwarts long before Amy began. After all his parents went there. But seeing his sibling go to the school brought it all home to the small boy. He remembers feeling a mixture of jealousy and sadness as he watched Amy go to the school for her first year. Wishing that he could go there with her, that he would be sharing the experience of being the first of this generation of Westwoods to go to Hogwarts. He supposed that one of the big disadvantages of being the younger sibling that it was even harder to be the first at anything. Sometimes it felt as if he was living in his sister’s shadow. Don pushed that train of thought out of his mind. Today was meant to be a happy day, and it was.

In fact, the 11-year-old was very excited to be starting his first year of school, and it was all that he could ever talk about for the past week. He was pretty sure that he had properly annoyed his sister with all the questions that he asked her. Which was partly deliberate on his before, so he was satisfied. That being said, his sister had gotten revenge on him too but telling him all sorts of horror stories about the year.

Amy had told him a lot of tales about what happens in Hogwarts that caused him to fret a bit. The one that worried Donnie the most was that the older girls sneak into the first year boys dorm on their first night in Hogwarts and carry the boys in their pyjamas out to the lake and throw them in, knowing that the boys could not get revenge. That story was the last straw, and he told his parents if that was true. Thankfully, his parents told him it was not, and Amy got a telling off and grounding for scaring her brother in such a way.

There were things that Amy refused to tell Don about the school, such as what to expect exactly at the sorting, the secret passages, what to expect in some of the classes and things like that. She told him that if she said everything about Hogwarts to him that it would spoil the surprise and awe of the school for him. Donald supposed that this sister was right.

Donnie watched as his parents and sister hugged, kissed and said their goodbyes. This year he would also be having his turn. Amy knew her brother well enough to know that he would want to be left alone to say his goodbye to his parents. He guessed that it was a bit silly of him really, getting upset was only natural. But to do so in front of his sister might be seen as being weak, he didn’t want to get upset in front of his parents. Especially with all these people here. However, he supposed that it couldn’t be helped.

He gave his dad and mam both very tight cwtches ”I love you both” he said trying his best not to start crying and failing. This set off his mother crying too, which made things worse for him. It took a while for him to compose himself and re-assuring his parents that he was okay. He promised his mum that he would write home often and that he would look after himself, the spiky-haired boy was delaying getting onto the train if truth be told, he wanted to spend as much time as he could with his dad and his mam.

It was only when his pet owl, Miles, gave an angry and impatient hoot from his cage that he felt that he should go. Donald just got the owl recently, but he was already finding him to be a bit grumpy. He gave his parents a final farewell before getting abroad a train and finding his sister.

It was to his dismay that his sister was in a carriage full of girls and that she was saving a space for him. Donnie didn’t want to be in a carriage that was full of girls. That would be embarrassing and uncomfortable. He was tempted to tell his sister that he wanted to sit elsewhere, or that he was going to sit somewhere else, but he doubted that would be acceptable to Amy. Besides, he would prefer to be in the company of someone who he knew. It would make him feel somewhat less nervous.

Seeing his sister smirking a bit at his discomfort, he shot her a glare. To be fair to Amy, and her friends, they didn’t start giggling at the boy. Instead, they were all very nice towards him and encouraged him to take a seat. The 11-year-old supposed that he didn’t really have a choice and did so. He guessed that it wouldn’t be all bad. They seemed nice enough. He sadly watched his parents wave good as the train pulled out of the station, and returned the wave back. This time he definitely didn’t want to cry. Not in front of girls.

Donald yet again failed in doing this, but the girls were all too emotional themselves in bidding their families farewell and giving each other comfort for them to provide the Welsh lad much attention. Being upset herself, Amy, who was sitting by her brother, put her hand on his shoulder and pulled him into a cwtch. He returned it The younger Westwood would never confess this, but he was grateful for her sister for doing this.

After they all settled down a bit, Don looked around the table at the girls trying not to look sheepish. He wanted to break the ice but felt so awkward to do so and he wasn’t exactly sure what to say to them. The mixture of them being strangers and girls was fatal to a nervous little boy like Donnie was. He was glad when his sister broke the ice on his behalf.

Still, impressed gave Amy a bit of perverse pleasure to see her brother feeling awkward, embarrassed and uncomfortable. She smirked as her sibling’s discomfort that he was obviously experiencing. She knew being in a carriage full of girls would be difficult for her younger brother. Amy didn’t really see why it would be. Donald should be used to girls having a sister and having spent time with her friends on occasions. Boys were so strange.

Deciding that her brother had suffered enough, Amy chose to break the ice on his behalf. She maybe liked seeing him suffer, but he was her little brother, and she supposed that she should be kind towards him. Especially since he was going to a strange school full of strange people. The 12-year-old remembered how awkward it was when she started Hogwarts. And she didn’t even have an older sister to look out for her. At least Donnie had her, and she would protect him no matter what. That is what big sisters were for.

”So…Donnie…” she said pleasantly to her brother ”…these are my friends. Kitty, Holly, Harriet and Wendy.” he went around indicating the girls as she named them ”Girls, this is my younger brother Donald” her friends gave Donald friendly smiles and hellos. They all clearly wanted to make him feel comfortable, both for his sake and for Amy. ”..he is a bit shy, so go easy on him” she grinned at her friends. Just because she wanted him to be comfortable didn’t mean she couldn’t tease him a bit.

Donald still seemed uncomfortable, the Hufflepuff girl considered for a moment how best to drag her sibling out of his shell. The young witch wondered if it would not have been better to have left Don to find a carriage for his own and meet some other first years like she had to. Perhaps. But his shyness would have probably prevented him from talking. Maybe it was a bad idea to get him in this carriage with her friends after all? Amy was only trying to be nice when she did it, make sure Donnie had company and some other people he could turn to if needed. She knew that her friends would look out for her little brother, she would make sure that they would.

So…Donnie….” she said thinking carefully about a good topic to get him chatting. The Westwood daughter thought that asking him about his thoughts about starting school. Amy had talked to him about it before, of course, but this was on the train to school now, and his thoughts should be at the forefront of his mind. That is if boys had any coherent thoughts at all? The 12-year-old did wonder at times.

”…any Houses that you want to be sorted in? Any Houses that you do not want to get sorted into? what are you particularly looking forward to?” she said sounding eager and interested in what the pale boy would tell her. ”Anything you want to ask us? We all would be happy to help you, right girls?” she looked around her friends who all nodded enthusiastically and encouraging, looking at Amy’s male sibling.

Donald knew his sister was enjoying this a bit too much for his liking. His sister always seemed to take some joy out of his embarrassment in situations like this. He wondered if that was a sister thing, a girl thing or simply a sibling thing. If he was truthful with himself, he too got some perverse joy was he was Amy in awkward situations. It might just be the way the two siblings behaved towards each other. He guessed that there was no real harm in it. After all, he loved his sister, although he was never say that to her, and he was pretty confident that she felt the same way towards him.

The 11-year-old nodded shyly towards Amy’s friends as she introduced them. He wanted to say hi to them and opened his mouth to do so, but nothing came out, so he promptly shut it again. His sister seemed to re-enforce his shyness with her comment. The little boy shot her another look. Just because it was true, she didn’t have to say it, and he knew that she did it just to embarrass him a bit. Unfortunately, it worked.

For a while, Donald sat there awkwardly and quietly as the girls had conversations amongst themselves. They were not talking about anything super interesting as far as he could tell, mostly about what they did over the summer, how they missed each other and other stuff boring stuff. The Welsh lad assumed that the topic would probably move onto things like make-up and shoes soon, that is what girls liked to talk about. He, undoubtedly very wisely, decided against voicing this opinion. The youngster felt that the girls would probably not appreciate such a remark. Especially not his sister who hated it when he said things she felt were sexist.

His thoughts soon wandered onto safer grounds. Donald wondered what House he would be in after he got sorted. He had read interesting things about all the Houses, and he supposed that they all had their own advantages and disadvantages, then he wondered about would he be able to make friends in his house, what if he couldn’t? The spikey haired boy did not want to be all alone. He was also interested in quidditch, the young boy had already flown a broom a few times and felt he was quite good at it. Heck, all the lessons sounded like that could be exciting.

When his Hufflepuff sibling said his name, he turned his attention towards her and gave her a small smile. It was a strange coincidence that his sister had just questioned him on the very things that he was just thinking about. If he didn’t know any better, he would think that she was a mind reader. Then again, it was probably a good thing that she wasn’t given his recent thoughts about what girls talked about. If she knew about that, well, that would have not ended well for him at all.

”…I…” he said feeling nervous again as all the eyes on the carriage were on him. Don decided to focus on his sister. It might be a bit rude, but it might also help him get his words out. Maybe? ”…I…am not sure….” that was not entirely true. He wanted to be sorted into Hufflepuff to be with his sister, but he was certainly not going to tell her that. Especially in front of all her friends. That would be embarrassing.

”…I think Ravenclaw is a cool House from what I read, and I would like to be in there” it wasn’t a total lie, Donnie did like Ravenclaw, and his father had been in that House. He felt that it would be a nice fit for him ” Slytherin might be…interesting…” he could sense some of the unease in the carriage at that and decided to move on quickly. ”…Hufflepuff would be alright too…I guess. I mean I would have to see your mug there, but at least it is better than Gryffindor” he said to his sister sounding a bit more cheeky. It didn’t occur to him that one of Amy’s friends might be a Gryffindor.

”I am looking forward to flying, charms and astronomy, in terms of classes and just exploring the school in general.” now that he thought about it the small boy had read a lot of good thing about the astronomy tower in the school. Stargazing a something of a hobby of his and he couldn’t wait to have an entire subject on it ” Oh, and discovering the library of course. I heard that it is big” he added.

It was re-assuring when Amy’s friend all nodded and looked encouragingly at him when Amy offered help. But he was still too shy and uncomfortable for him to ask the girls any of the million questions that were buzzing around his head. Donnie simply gave a shy little smile and shook his head.

Amy continued to smile sweetly and encouragingly at her sibling. She wanted him to feel as comfortable as possible, of course, she did. The 12-year-old was not a monster and nor did she hate her brother. Even if she acted like it sometimes or he thought that she did. The Hufflepuff mused if that made her a bad sister? She knew that all siblings fought or had fallings out. But the Westwood children seemed to bicker more than most, at least that is how she felt sometimes. Then again, she was being nice to him now, so maybe their relationship was not as bad as it sometimes seemed.

Ravenclaw, of course it didn’t surprise her to hear Donnie say that. It was something they have talked about previously, and she obviously knew her brother for 11 years now so could be something that she could predict Their father was a Ravenclaw, and her brother could actually be very clever when he wanted to be. It wasn’t something that she would tell him to his face. She felt that it would make him too big headed. Besides, in many ways, she was more intelligent than he was. At least she felt that way in any case.

Slytherin was a bit more of a surprise to her, she could not really picture Don as a snake. Nor did she believe that he would fit into that House very well. Amy wondered if her brother said Slytherin only to rank it above Hufflepuff? It would be just like him to do that. Talking of Hufflepuff, it didn’t take too long for her brother to cheek her over. The second-year glared at her brother a bit and was about to pass a comment when he made a Gryffindor comment. It was a good thing that Harriet, a second-year Gryffindor, was sitting next to Amy. The lass put her arm out to stop her from leaping at her brother and doing him an injury. The Welsh lass didn’t fancy telling her parents how Donald was thrown out of the carriage window of the Hogwarts express.

” Well, firstly Harriet is a Gryffindor, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them. I think you probably should apologise to her…” she gave her brother a threatening look. ”…and I don’t mean apologise 50 thousand times like you tend to do either. Just once it enough, if you mean it” she added just as sternly.

” Other than the stupidity of insulting a Gryffindor, I think you might be a good fit for Ravenclaw…” She said before Harriet added:”…the little brat certainly has the arrogance for it.” Amy shushed her. ” And as for your Hufflepuff comment, well. I would also have to put up with you bugging me all the time if we were there together.” it was a bit of a mean thing for her to say and she knew it. But Don’s comment about Gryffindor and his cheeking of her had narked her off a bit

A small sigh escaped her lips, she didn’t want to fight with her brother, not today. ” But I would still be delighted if you joined me in Hufflepuff” the Welsh witch gave her brother a small, apologetic smile.

”Knew that you would say flying and astronomy…” he turned to the rest of the girls ”…my brother is a big astronomy nerd, he stargazes all the time.” she added, teasing her little brother slightly. ”And then the library, of course, he would say that.” he added to them.

”Well, anything else you want to know. I know that there must be some things. Right? Don’t be scared to ask, none of us bite.” the second year again was trying to make Donnie comfortable. Despite the teasing, she didn’t want him to suffer. Much anyway.

Donald was really glad, secretly at least, that his sister and her friends were keeping him company on his first journey up to Hogwarts, he was a bit worried about being lonely on the train, that Amy’s friends would not want to sit with a boy, or not want to be with him. Sometimes the 11-year-old felt that nobody liked him. Maybe it was paranoia, or it was a lack of self-confidence, his own insecurities, but he just felt that nobody liked him. Sometimes not even his sister.

Of course, that wasn’t true, Amy loved him very much, and he loved her back. Even if they bickered and argued frequently. The truth was Donnie knew that Amy would have never left him on his own, deep down, he knew that. His sister had always done right by him in the end and was always there for him when it matters. She was a good older sister to him, and sometimes he just wished that he was a better younger brother to her.

His face turned more pale when his sister told him off about mocking Gryffindor. He looked at Heather horrified and then back at Amy. He bit his lip nervously. Was Amy going to let this girl beat him up? He wouldn’t put it past her, but no, thankfully not. She just demanded he apologises. The Welsh boy opened his mouth to do so when Amy told him not to have another apology fit. The first-year turned a bright red colour. Why did Amy have to embarrass him like that? It was true that the little lad did apologise a lot when he got going, but there was no need for her to say it right?

Very wisely, he decided to let this slip. Donald had already angered the 2nd year Hufflepuff, and he didn’t want to cross her even more. It was never a wise idea to push Amy too far. ”Sorry Harriet, I didn’t know, and I wasn’t thinking…I am…” he caught his sister’s severe look and stopped himself from apologising further.

He half expected Amy to tell him to leave the carriage, and he would have to find somewhere to sit by himself. However, his sister didn’t say this, of course not. Donnie supposed that he did deserve to be called stupid for what he did, so he decided to let it slide. In any case, it was followed up by a nice comment. ”You really think so?” he said deciding to ignore Harriet too. Again, he insulted her first and he didn’t want to risk provoking a fight, not any more than he had already done.

However, Amy’s comments about him bugging her upset him a bit. Was he bugging her? Was that what Amy thought of him and felt that he was doing? Perhaps she would prefer to be in the carriage alone with the girls? He looked at her with big, hurt eyes. His comments about looking at her mug were a joke, but he felt that the response was a bit harsh.

His sister must have noticed this and she quickly backtracked on this. The 11-year-old smiled at his sister back at her. ”I would be extremely happy to be in Hufflepuff with you too” he said to her, momentary forgetting the other girls in the carriage. He was very tempted to reach over and hug her until he heard some of the girls collectively go “aww”. For a second time, he turned bright red.

Yet again his sister teased him a bit, and yet again he decided against coming back at her. It was not that he was afraid of her, nor of girls in general. However, he had already upset at least one of them and irritated his sister; he did not want to risk a fight. Especially as he was still excited about going to Hogwarts for the very first time. It wouldn’t be worth the hassle for the siblings to argue, in his opinion

”Well… a boy gotta have a hobby you know…” he said in response to his sister’s teasing with a small shrug. ”…I mean, how often does a boy get to do his hobby as a lesson?” he imagined not that often. Although, Hogwarts did offer a few classes that could also be hobbies, namely Astronomy, Potions and Herbology in the first couple of years anyway. Perhaps it isn’t all that uncommon in Hogwarts he thought to himself.

The little boy considered if he should ask his sibling and her friends any more questions. He had thousands of questions running through his head, and it was difficult to get them into order. Some of them he would have rather just asked his sister in person. ”Is it true about all the pranks they pull on first years? Amy told me that they throw first years into the lake on their first night!” he shot his sister a look. His parents had already told him that wasn’t true and grounded Amy for that. He just wanted to embarrass her with that, although it did disguise a more serious worry that Donnie was having ”I mean, I don’t want to get bullied or picked on in any of the Houses that I am in?” You know? I just want to fit into wherever I am in. I just hope they like me. he glanced around nervously, hoping that none f them would laugh at him for his fear.
