can you keep up?
puddlemere practice pitch
something like a tryout

Nothing was set in stone just yet, but that did not stop Jaxon from asking Caleb to meet him in Puddlemere. Nat was going to try to work things with the Ministry. She was a pretty scary little lady--so he thought if anyone could get a muggleborn back on the pitch, it was going to be her. She seemed just as committed to Puddlemere coming out on top this season as he was. Maybe having an axe to grind with an ex was just the thing to get an owner in gear...

He had a few quaffles out--a bat and a Bludger, too--as well as some other training equipment set up. Jaxon might have been a seeker, but he knew how to play every position on the team and regularly trained with all of them. He took his role as the captain of both Puddlemere and the National team very seriously. He had never been focused only on seeking--he studied the nuances of the game and easily could have been a starter at any position. He just liked seeking. He liked being the one the beaters were always going after. He liked the chase of the Snitch. He liked having victory at his fingertips. It was an addictive thing--and it let him fly like a madman, which was fun, too.

Today wasn't about him having fun though, he wanted to see what Caleb could do and how well he could still handle himself on a broom. Jax was flying around a little bit while he waited. The brunet grinned when he saw the blond walking out into the stadium. Diving down to greet him, Jaxon landed gracefully in front of the man. His broom was deposited on the ground with care and he took a step towards the other man.

"Good to see ya," Jaxon drawled, extending his hand to take Caleb's, but instead of just shaking it, he pulled him into a hug, clapping the man on the back. Jaxon released Caleb after a moment, and looked him over. "You ain't lookin' too bad; though we'll have to get ya on a high protein diet to bulk you back up." Caleb did look thinner, but it was nothing that a high protein and carb diet with some strength training could not set to right.

When he had graduated from Hogwarts, Caleb fully understood his next venture of joining the professional Quidditch league was a big step. As much as he would have liked his parents to be there for his games, his mum was no more and his dad was not able to see him play due to him being a muggle. Caleb had made many trips down to Southampton back when he belonged in this world and he was on a successful team to show his dad the many newspaper clippings of him playing. While dad still didn’t understand how people could fly around on brooms, he was still proud of him. It made Caleb happy to hear that from one of his parents. He knew in his heart his mum would also be proud.

From the moment that the muggleborn registration had been announced, he felt like he had lost everything and was on the verge of losing his place in the world he had worked so hard to belong to. It had no longer mattered and Caleb had lost all that he had, his lavish flat and his fame and his source of income. He dared to no longer think about Kolna, it was not a place he wanted to recall. He left the UK and run away from his problems because he wanted to protect the ones he loved here and because he was scared. None of them may have understood his reasoning back then but they understood it now and that was all that mattered.

While Caleb’s personal relationships were still being worked on, he had been contacted by Jax, who had been his captain when he had been playing for Puddlemere. He was a good bloke and the blonde wizard was glad that he had contacted him. With Ruby due any day now, he wanted to give her space to relax. He had even left Archer at home this evening.

Caleb had brought the broom that Logan had made for him and he hoped it would be suitable to work to gain back his position on the team. Walking back into Puddlemere stadium brought on a mixture of nerves and excitement for the wizard. He hoped the latter took over. He smiled at Jax as the man hugged him. It was true, he did look skinnier and he even felt it. He had to be up to the ideal weight for Keeper if he wanted to contribute again to making Puddlemere number one. ”Yeah, nothing a better diet won’t fit…” Why did he have to talk about being paid peanuts in his last letter back to the man opposite him. ”IT’S good to see you too, Jax, so where shall we start?”

Jax was fairly certain that Caleb was the player that he really wanted at the goal posts for Puddlemere. He knew that the keeper had been excellent before the registration. He just hoped that the last two years had not ruined Caleb's physique or comfortableness on a broom. It had been a real loss for the team when the wizard had gotten shipped off to whatever bullshit job the Ministry had forced him into. It was horrible and shameful the way that the muggleborns were being treated. Jaxon could have been among them. He was surprised really that he wasn't--that his Black ancestor had been enough to save him from losing his career.

It was like one persecution had been traded for another. He had been happy that Durant was out of office--not happy that he had been burned at the stake, but happy that the werewolf persecution was over. The things Durant's werewolf capture unit had done to wolves was unthinkable. It was worse than forcing someone to do a crappy job. It wasn't worse than torture or spell experimentation, because that was essentially what it had been. Why couldn't people just stop being terrible to each other for arbitrary reasons? It baffled him. Hopefully things would be better soon and Caleb could get back with the team.

He was going to go with that line of thinking anyway.  For today at least, he was putting his faith in Natasha to get Caleb back into the league. The blonde might have been tiny, but he was pretty sure she didn't get told no too often. She had that firecracker vibe about her.

Caleb asked what the plan was for today and the seeker offered him an easy grin.
"I figured we would get in the air a little bit--I have an agility course I'd like to see you fly, but let's start with some laps and then me tryin' to get a few Quaffles past ye at the goal posts," Jaxon drawled, talking though the agenda with his easy country twang. He was all laid back country charm--now as always. The werewolf mounted his broom and waited for Caleb to do the same. "Set the pace for us on the laps with whatev'r ye are comfortable with, I might try to push ye a little bit. Just try to keep with me, alright?" He gave a nod and pushed off the ground. The wind in his face immediately made him smile. He still loved being on a broom after all this time.

Caleb had been understandably surprised to receive the letter from Jaxon. He had no idea the other wizard was even thinking of him, let alone considering seeing how he was fairing when it came to Quidditch. He was grateful he still had his magic and that meant he could still fly. Caleb felt so often Fying was the only thing he was good at. He knew that his friends would correct him but it was just what he felt. He had never been the most confident guy even when he had been head boy at Hogwarts, he had never had a cocky attitude towards the role. He had always thought of that role as one fthat didn’t belong to him but obviously the staff at school had had other ideas.

But those days were long gone. He slowly risen up so that he ended up with some kind of reputation but even that was now in the past. He been reduced to whatever lay beneath garbage. Until things had changed and before he had run away, he had been treated like filt even if he knew he was better than that. Caleb just had to keep telling himself that. It was all that he had been reminding himself of when he making his way back to the UK.

However, nothing could have prepared him for what awaited him. He just took it in his stride. Nothing was going to change, he had to accept that. Caleb just to get over his mental demons. At least seeing Jaxon would be the perfect distraction for him. He was excited even if he felt like there was very little hope he would actually get back on the team. Ruby had more faith then him but he wanted her focus on her new daughters. Caleb would just get back to her on how the meeting with Jaxon went.

Caleb’s flying was just restricted now to times when he was sure he would be alone and no one would question him as to what he was doing. But often his work on cleaning floos just exhausted him and it wasn’t the best idea to fly while being tired even if he was going to take it easy. You had to concentrate and not make any mistakes so your flight didn’t end in disaster.

The wizard was certain that he he could bulk up as Jaxon mentioned. It was just came down to diet. Right now he had very little to no money to actually afford a full meal of much. He just got by when it came to food. But wasn’t going to tell the team captain that.

Caleb nodded seeing Jaxon mount his broom and did the same on his. He kicked off and rose a few feet up in the air. ”This isn’t too bad” he told himself quietly before looking to the dark haired guy and shouted. ”Ready?” before he kicked off and sped off to the far end of the stadium. The wind pushing through his hair brought a smile to his face, he couldn’t help it.
