[attr="class","cbody"]Constance honestly just couldn’t wait until this week was over. By the time the week came to a close, she would be done with her exams and she would not have to worry about Lufkin again until the autumn term started. The decision not to take summer classes was definitely the right decision given everything else that was going on. Avalon would pull most of her focus throughout the summer, as always, and she’d probably spend the rest of the time planning the wedding and dealing with the fact that she had an actual guard following her around all of the time.
[break][break]
As much as her matka told them all that it was necessary until the ICW left, Constance found the constant looming presence of her guard entirely annoying. Most of her time was spent trying to get rid of him. If he didn’t have magic, that would be a lot easier to do. But unfortunately for her, a quick apparition was always a lot harder to pull off when he had the capability of following her. But it certainly didn’t stop her from trying.
[break][break]
Today, she’d had only one final to take on campus, with her trusty guard going right along with her. It irritated her more on campus, where she didn’t feel in danger in the slightest but did feel like every single person that she passed was well aware of the fact that she had a guard with her. Not that she normally minded staring, but this was a situation where she would rather not have the attention. She didn’t want people whispering and wondering why she had security all of a sudden and it was obvious to her that it had caught people’s eyes.
[break][break]
So, she was just glad to be done with Lufkin for the day and by the end of the week, she would be done with it for a couple of months. Summer could not come quickly enough.
[break][break]
Constance wished that the borders weren’t still closed. She really thought that she could use a break from the United Kingdom for a while. She didn’t care where she went. It was just getting tiring being trapped here. She felt like she needed to get out, but there was just nowhere for her to go. There was the option of seeing if it was possible for her matka to pull some strings or ask Josef or even just ask Sylvestr or anyone to see if she could somehow get passed the wards. But she knew that her matka would never let her hear the end of it if she went over her head for a chance to get out of the country, and her matka would likely say no before she even got the full sentence out.
[break][break]
No, the chances of her getting out of the United Kingdom before the borders opened up again was slim to none, and she knew it. Constance just had to keep her mind occupied as much as possible. School and Avalon did that, as did wedding planning, her time spent at the piano, and every other obligation that she had. Eventually, she had to think that things would go back to normal. Hopefully, anyway. When it did, then they could move on from there.
[break][break]
For now, she’d decided that she wanted to spend at least a little bit of time trying to convince her twin to take a break with her. It was just about lunchtime, which meant it was the perfect time to pop into HOME and see what Temperance was doing. Since she had moved in with Liam, she saw less of her family than she liked. Before, they all had busy schedules but they still ended up back at the same place every night. Now, she went to a different home every night and only saw her family when they somehow lined their schedules up with each other. Since she had gotten done with her exam early, it was absolutely nothing to apparate over to HOME to see if her sister had lunch plans.
[break][break]
Of course, she apparated down an alley, because she still felt entirely too braggy using magic around anyone in her family that had lost theirs. And it was also the best way to slip her guard. Worth a shot anyway. It would probably end badly. Either it would work but she was about to walk into a building with more guards, and her matka would find out that she’d slipped him again. Or it wouldn’t work and he’d end up right at the magazine anyway. But she was able to slip into the building and head for her twin’s desk, with no sign of her guard. Maybe she had managed to get rid of him for the time being. “I’m here to relieve you,” she teased, coming to a stop in front of the desk. “You work far too hard and I want to get lunch.”

Kiss the rain
Whenever you need me
Kiss the rain  Whenever I'm gone too long

Matka splitting her time between the Ministry and the magazine was stressing Temperance out. The editor's schedule had always been full, but not having to divy up time slots and explain away her absence was incredibly difficult. The shift could not have really came at a worse time, either. Spring performances were going on at Braithwaite. Her stress and lack of control over her special little talent had really complicated the performance in Beckenham in Kelsey Park.

She had performed her étude perfectly. That had been fine. She had no performance anxiety with playing. Especially in the park! That was so insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But when it had come time for the representatives of the undergraduate orchestra to perform her sonata that had just brought on a wave of emotion--too much, apparently for her to keep control of her elemental-so-called-mastery-that-obviously-was-NOT-mastered.

The tornado had been minor. Or well as minor as tornadoes were--it had torn up some trees from the park and obviously had resulted in the cancellation of the rest of the day's performances. They would be performing the sonata instead at the more major shows at Greenwich and Hyde Parks. There would be many more to hear her music now...but Temperance was not really sure whether or not she should even attend. She did not want a repeat of her loss of control. It was mortifying. Thank Circe and Morgana no one at Braithewaite knew she was an air elemental. It had never mattered before the epidemic. She didn't flaunt it by pursuing a degree in one of the woodwind instruments... There had been at time when she used it to help with composing, before the epidemic mucked everything up. When she was in control, she had been able to play her double bass and accompany it with pan flutes. Those were the easiest to just play by controlling the air.

Drahomír had poked a bit of fun at her over the incident. But in a nice way-- her guard had done much to win her over, without really trying. He was handsome and showed kindness to others. Temperance had something of a crush on the wizard, not that anyone save Eleánora seemed aware of it. It was expected that Ella would notice, because Ella noticed literally everything, but there was no signs for anyone else to pick up on. It wasn't as if Temperance was staring at him or blushing. She wasn't. She was just going about her days, as usual. The witch had not complained once about the tall brunet's presence at her side. She saw no reason in it. She did not try to lose him or bother him in any way. Protecting her was his job, and as someone who took great pride in her own work, be it at HOME or with her music, Temperance was not going to make his job harder for him. He had not chosen this assignment.

He chose to stand, even as she was seated--even as she offered for him to move any of the chairs to a location better suited for surveillance, he stood. Drahomír was not so close to her that she felt like he was lording over her shoulder, but still close enough that she could feel his presence there as she worked. It was comfortable to her. Surely, it would not be for some, but she had always subconsciously felt like her grandfather had been watching her. Drahomír was so much more pleasant than that.

His body shifted slightly in her peripheral vision, stiffening she thought, which made her stiffen in turn. Blue eyes lifted from her computer screen to see her twin approaching. Constance had no accompaniment. Of course, she would be insist on being wholly inconsiderate of the man assigned to her and make his life difficult.  Temperance was not surprised  by this. Constance had always been the sort to think of herself and not others--it was why she had run off after their otec had died, because she did whatever she wanted for herself with no thought of anyone else. That was a long time ago, though. Temperance did not need to dwell on it; even if the damage the choices her sister had made would never really heal, Tempe could smile and act as if all was and had always been well.

Constance announced that she was there to relieve Temperance, which caused the slightly younger Mountbatten to arch a brow up towards her hairline. A dry sarcastic retort was on the tip of her tongue, but she did not let it out. There was no reason to ask if Constance knew what the word relieve meant in that context. They both knew that Connie was not really here to assist with work, she was seeking to draw Temperance away from it. A declaration conveying as much earned a smile from Tempe. She did not make a practice of eating lunch, but she was not going to be rude at turn down the invitation, even if it was last minute. “And where did you want to go lunch?” the witch inquired, tilting her head slightly as she looked up at Constance. “I really can't spare too long. I have performances all week--and Matka has been in Princess Mode since she and El started at the Ministry.” She understood the family was royalty before anything else. They had a duty to their mother's country, even if they had barely spent any time there. She, nearly as much as Eleánora, embraced the notion of duty and responsibility. She lived a careful life, mindful of propriety and public image. It was why she was a virgin. It was why she did not wear shirts like her twin had on in public. The Wentzell and Mountbatten names would never be besmirched by her.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]The whole guard situation was something that was chafing at her, and she knew that she wasn’t the only way that felt that way. Constance was well aware of her brother’s opinions on the matter, though she didn’t really know anybody else’s. She hadn’t really talked to them about it. She just thought that having guards trailing after them day in and day out was just entirely paranoid and unnecessary. There was no reason to think that anything was going to happen to them. There was no reason to think that the ICW was going to come after them, of all people. Yes, her matka had been the one that had killed the former Minister, with her strýc. But that was years ago now. Surely, if they were going to face the ramifications of that action, the ICW would have come to arrest them far sooner than right now.
[break][break]
They were here to help with the epidemic. To help find a cure. They were here to stabilize the government. They were not here to start arresting people. They simply had not brought the numbers for that. If they were planning on taking people in, surely they would have brought a much bigger force. That was her opinion of the matter, anyway. Constance couldn’t claim to be an expert in any sense of the word, but she really thought there was logic behind that mindset. They hadn’t come here for them. There was no reason to think that they had. The epidemic was a much larger concern than the possibly of a very delayed arrest or something like that.
[break][break]
Had her matka listened to her when she had tried to talk her out of having a guard? No. That was not an argument that she was going to win. There was little use than actually trying to argue. She had tried to get her point across, to put it nicely, and then she had stopped when it was clear that her matka’s mind was made up. And that was how Ludvík had come to follow her around all day and night. She knew that she didn’t make it easy on him. Some days, she couldn’t be bothered to try to get away from him. Other days, she would not consider her day to be a success unless she managed to evade him for a good portion of the day. Unfortunately for her, that was next to impossible. Her class schedule was set, her times at the studio were easy to get from her matka or from the studio itself. The lack of predictability in her schedule made it easy for him to find her when she did manage to apparate away without him.
[break][break]
Was there a point in getting away from him when she was going to HOME? Not really. Drahomír and Vlasta would be there. They would easily be able to tell Ludvík just where she was, and then her matka would surely have plenty to say about her once again ditching him. But it was just habit. She did not want a bodyguard. She did not think that she needed a bodyguard. That was all there was to it. Did she prove anything by continuing to try to shake him off of her? No—and a part of her knew that. But she still couldn’t bring herself to completely accept it. With everything else that was going on, she just did not want to worry about someone watching her every move.
[break][break]
Maybe Ludvík would just quit if she kept annoying him. Maybe he’d ask to be Thea’s guard instead and eventually, no one would want to watch her and they’d have no choice but to let her go without a guard. That was the thought process anyway. Of course, Ludvík had given no indication that he was even annoyed. He very well might have been, but he had never said a thing to her about it. More than likely, he knew what she hoped to gain from it and that was why, but there was really no way to know with him. It wasn’t as if she was all that successful at getting rid of him for long anyway. Especially not coming here.
[break][break]
Constance had thought that seeing her twin would help. She had been feeling very disconnected from the rest of her family for the past couple of months. She felt very isolated from them. When she had time, she tried to do what she could to fix that, but her relationship with her twin had always been more strained than with the rest of her siblings. Not bad by any means. Just definitely not the type of relationship that most people had with their twins. “I don’t know. Down the street maybe? I’m sure there’s something close. I wouldn’t dream of dragging you out too far.” She didn’t go out to eat in this area of London all that often, but she was sure there was something. Her voice was a little more hopeful than she’d meant for it to, and at her twin’s next words, her smile faltered.
[break][break]
“Oh. Right, of course,” she stumbled over her words, trying to recover quickly. She had not actually thought that her sister would not want to go to lunch with her. She had told herself that the chasm she felt growing between her and her siblings was in her mind—and made surprise visits like this one to prove that to herself. “You’re busy. I’ll just… leave you to it, then.” The bright smile was back by the end of her statement. She wasn’t going to force her sister to go out to lunch with her. If she didn’t want to go, then that was fine. It had just been an idea, anyhow, and obviously quite a poor one at that.
