Bon appétit, baby

I'm a five-star Michelin
A Kobe flown in, You want what I'm cooking

june 13th, 2012 ✧ Draco & Honora's Flat

They were home early from Lucent. Quite early for them... And not for the reasons that sometimes had them apparatingh or locking the door to Honora's office in the middle of the day. The happy couple was having a dinner party. Draco, being the chef in the relationship, had planned out the meal. It was going to be over the top, but that really was to be expected. Sure, he was engaged to a muggleborn, but he was still a Malfoy. The extraness of what that meant had not gone away when he had shed the absurd blood prejudices that his parents had tried to instill in him.

So, yes, the menu was absolutely over the top. It was fine. There was plenty of time to prepare everything and charms would keep every course at the perfect temperature until the time for them to served came. The wizard tended to use magic less for cooking and more for preserving food until it could be eaten. There was something so much more intimate about preparing food without magic. Cooking that way was much more like potion preparation, whereas cooking magically relied on charms-- not that Draco wasn't brilliant at both, he was. His charms work was impeccable. He always baked that way. The muggle oven just couldn't be trusted to bake anything perfectly, whereas his  magic he had perfect control over.

The man had opinions about how things should be done...and baking was a magic only activity. But most everything else benefited from the attention and patience of non-magical preparation. He swore that the flavors of his vegetable stew just could not be matched by the magical variety, because of the way he slow cooked the onions, searing them to the bottom of the pan before de-glazing with a beef broth (also of his own making sans magic-- the man was not buying anything pre-made and filled with preservatives. Obviously!)

He wasn't making stew tonight, though. That was a comfort food much better suited for winter than the heat of the summer. No, today, the man with the assistance of his lovely soux chef, Honora, was making six courses. To start the meal, he was going to serve a chilled avocado soup topped with finely chopped fiery, crisp fresh serranos and lightly steamed sweet crab. Or so he had planned... He was sure he had picked up a half a dozen Hass avocados at the market. He was sure of that, because he had been incredibly anal about picking out each and every one of them. They needed to be soft, but not brown. The soup needed to be a lovely light green...
Not that he was above adding a coloring charm to make it prettier if he had to. But if he did not find the avocados, there would be no soup and how would they start the meal then?!

An exasperated huff paired with him closing the door to the fridge in frustration.
"Do you know what we did with all those avocados? I'm either blind or they aren't in the refrigerator." Draco looked at Honora expectantly. He was frowning and this tone conveyed what he perceived the severity of this situation to be (borderline emergency, obviously).

There really was not time for him to pop back out to the market to get more avocados... and he was so picky, he did not really want to send Nora to get them. He'd have to ask her to get a dozen just to make sure that he had six he was happy with-- and then what would they do with the other six. They'd go bad unless they avocado toast every morning for breakfast... Which was not realistic. Neither of them made time for meals in the morning. It just was not a priority. No, her going to get new avocados was absurd. They had to be in fridge. He opened the doors up again, looking inside. Every shelf was filled to the brim since there was a lot to be cooked tonight. It made it very difficult to actually find what he was looking for though... and he didn't want to try to summon them, because then they could hit things and get bruised... No, they had to be manually found. Even if he had to empty out the entire refrigerator.

[attr="class","cbody"]Honora was absolutely not a bad cook. She had yet to burn water or anything embarrassing like that, but she wouldn’t go so far as to say that she was a natural in the kitchen either. She was definitely passable, and she enjoyed the process of cooking. A lot of time had been spent in the kitchen growing up, watching her mum cook and helping her. It was something that they had always done together. Her mum was a better baker than a cook, though, which meant a lot of their time had been far more focused on desserts than anything else. But there had definitely been enough cooking for her to have learned her way around the kitchen for the most part.
[break][break]
Draco was definitely a better cook than she was. That was not a competition that she would be winning any time soon, and not a competition that she wanted to win anyway. She rather liked being the assistant—or the sous chef, more aptly. Nora considered herself quite good at stirring things, and she was not bad at chopping vegetables. There had yet to be any injuries on her watch, which was good, because she honestly thought that Draco would take the knives away from her if she did something like cut her finger and ruin an avocado.
[break][break]
Despite her teasing, she really liked cooking with her fiancé. For both appropriate and inappropriate reasons, if she was being perfectly honest with herself. She genuinely did like cooking, and she did like watching him cook, but he also got pretty bossy in the kitchen, which she liked in far more inappropriate ways. There were times when her attire in the kitchen could be a lot more questionable—occasionally just an apron, if she was feeling particularly racy, because it was fun to tease his focus like that. But then there were times when there was too much to be done for her to wear nothing but an apron and expect to get anything done.
[break][break]
Tonight just happened to be one of those nights. Six courses. It was ambitious, but she was not about to tell him that it was too much. She just knew that they would be eating the leftovers all week, because there was no way that they were going to eat all of this food. She was sure that it was going to be delicious, but there was just only so much that a person could honestly eat, and six courses was a lot. Not that she was complaining. Nora was a definite supporter of leftovers. It definitely made things easier during the workweek when she could just grab something to take to work, or heat something up when they got home. It was better than ordering food every night, and sometimes a break from cooking was nice. So, she supposed it would be all right that they would have a refrigerator full of leftovers for the next week.
[break][break]
In her opinion, cooking called for a glass of wine. While she normally was one to pull a beer out of the refrigerator, there was just something about cooking that made her feel like she definitely needed wine. So, while Draco checked the refrigerator for what they’d need for the first course, Nora leaned against the countertop, wine in hand. There was really going to be a lot to get done before everyone made it here tonight. The refrigerator was stuffed full of ingredients that they needed for every course. While sometimes, when they were cooking, her job as a sous chef mostly involved stirring, cutting, drinking wine, and watching her fiancé cook and look good doing it, she knew that she was likely going to have to really pull her weight tonight if they were going to get this all done on time.
[break][break]
A raised eyebrow was her first response to his words, and she pushed off from the countertop to head toward the refrigerator. “My wager’s on blind,” she teased, nearly certain that she would open up the door and the avocados would be staring them right in the face. She remembered unloading them and putting them in there, after all. They had not just walked away. As expected, it took only a brief scan of the contents for her eyes to narrow in on the ingredients in question. “The avocados you requested, sir,” Nora added, handing him the bag as she closed the refrigerator door with her hip.
