My Little Girl
How had it all come to this? Every single decision he had taken had been logical. Reasonable. Any man with an ounce of brain would have acted exactly as he had done. Common sense was on his side. He had done what was best for the family. Roz was a part of this family, and therefore he had also done the best for her. He had thought she’d understand in the long run. Certainly, it was uncomfortable to be a trainer’s assistant. And, yes, she could have died. All risks he had been willing to take. She was in a bit of a tight situation for a while, but their money was safe. He had a good job. Their children could go to Hogwarts. There had been no alternative to what he had done. Not handing her in would have caused huge damages to their finances. He couldn’t allow that to happen. So was it not the most blatant truth ever to exist that he had done nothing but the right thing. And he had had over a year to repeat this (without the emphasis on the pecuniary matters because he knew his wife well enough how confused her priorities were). He had thought they had returned back to normal, at least mostly. She had remained distant, no matter how much time he wasted on her. But he had just assumed that this would be the new normalcy between them now, and he could live with that. It was insulting because this was no way to treat a husband. Yet, it didn’t really matter. They could simply co-exist if she felt like being difficult.

But then… then… then the Muggleborns had been declared normal citizens again. He had been expecting it, the signs were clear. He had been fully prepared to help Roz sue the ones responsible and see that they got money in return for what had happened to her. This money had been a fixed part of his calculations from the very beginning. Now, though? It hardly mattered that no one seemed to care to recompense the victims of the Muggleborn registration. He was sure he could find someone to accuse. Maybe even proceeding against the Ministry as a whole would be effective if only…

Why had she left him? Just now that she could do again whatever she wanted? Why was she filing for divorce? Divorce! She couldn’t really want to leave him, could she? Why would she? It was ridiculous. Impossible. So why was she gone? Why was she doing this to him? And why were the children with her? Arthur wasn’t even answering his letters. Not that this was something new, but he’d at least sign Vi’s letters… Vi’s letters. She was asking silly questions with no point to them. She was a silly little thing, he had never doubted that, but she was also the sweetest girl in the world, and she wasn’t supposed to write her letters this sporadically. And seeming so upset. Thinking he had done something wrong. It was all Roz’ fault. He had warned her against telling the children the truth. They weren’t reasonable enough to understand that he had told them what was best. What sort of petty revenge was it to disturb his darling girl? He had expected better from Roz. He hadn’t even seen his children since they had returned from school. She was manipulating them. What kind of woman had he been married to that would do something so cruel to him? All he had ever done was thinking of Vi and Arthur’s future…

There was a little bit of hope, though, wasn’t there? Vi would study Archaeology. She was still listening to him. Well… maybe Roz was telling her the same thing, but she was listening to him, right? The Dad who had brought her up, not the out of nowhere appearing again Mum. He only had to talk to her, talk sense into her. Then, with time, things would return back to normal. She only had to come to the park today. She had written she would. She wouldn’t abandon him too. She couldn’t. Not Vi.
