WAND APPLICATION
LAST UPDATED: 9 Aug 2019
A wand is the most important object that a witch or a wizard owns, and as everyone knows it is the wand that chooses the wizard, and not the other way around. Because of that, we have created a fun little quiz to take if you want to get a wand for your character. Obviously they have a wand, but if you want to officially know more about it such as length, wood type, and core, then look no further! You can just take this quiz, and an admin will look through your results and determine the best wand for your character! If you have a canon character and their wand is on the Wiki, (just google it to find out if it's there!) then just submit the separate form that is listed below in order to add your character's canon wand to the list! Have some fun with it!

If you want to learn a bit more about wands here, we have listed some information about different woods, cores, and some interesting details. This would also be helpful for anyone who works at Ollivander’s, or as a wandmaker! Pretty much, this is just fascinating stuff… to some people, at least, so read on if you’re intrigued! Also a good place to look if you want to figure out why the administration gave your character the wand that it did. As always, you are welcome to PM any of us with questions or if you think that we completely mucked up the choice! Hopefully that doesn’t happen, but we are open to talking it out if it does!
Here are the wood types that we have on this site! We’ve put a bit of information down about them, courtesy of Harry Potter Wikia, and you can always stop by there if you want to learn more about wands as well.
The length of a wand can symbolize something of its owner, though it is not always clear what that is. Many people say that wands that are unusually short, as in less than 9", tend to belong to those that "lack" personalities. Most wands are 9 to 14 inches, but they can get as short as 7 and as long as 18. Length of a wand can also have to do with the height of the witch or wizard.

Wand Cores | |
Augurey Feather | Those who are misunderstood, wise, ready-minded, free spirited, reclusive, pure of heart and courageous would have this wand core. Having such a core suggests that your motives and intentions are often a mystery or often misunderstood. |
Coral | This is not a wand core that is sold in Ollivander's, but it is sold in other areas of Europe. It is a wand that is easily swayed toward the Dark Arts, and is temperamental and can produce absolutely disastrous effects when partnered with some wood types. |
Dragon Heartstring | This core produces wands with the most power, and they tend to learn quickly than other types. They bond strongest with their first owner, though their allegiance can be won from their original master. A wand of this core tends to be the easiest to turn to the Dark Arts. Of the three main wand cores, this one is the most prone to accidents as it can be somewhat temperamental. |
Fwooper Feather | Those who are troublesome, relentless, resilient, short-tempered, witty, and driven would have this wand core. Having such a wand core suggests that you often attract bad luck and bad karma and are sometimes with a lack of stability, but despite this, you are able to fight it and weather it admirably. |
Hippogriff Feather | Those who are noble, respectful, protective, fiery, and courageous will have this wand core. Having such a wand core suggests that you can adapt to any situation, no matter how impossible they might be. Like the creature from which the core comes from, you demand constant respect or those who have disrespected you will face your fiery and short-tempered disposition. |
Phoenix Feather | This is one of the rarer core types, and is capable of producing the greatest range of magic, though that is not always revealed right away. Their shows the most initiative, sometimes acting of their own accord. Wands with a phoenix feather core are the pickiest when choosing witches or wizards, and they are hard to tame and it is hard to win their allegiance. |
Pixie Hair | Those who are fun-loving, lively, cheerful, good-humored, and mischievous will have this wand core. Having such a core suggests that you delight in making trouble, but in a friendly, usually non-violent way. You may enjoy winding people up and agitating those who get on your nerves, often getting a laugh at other people's expense. Despite this, you are a friendly and caring person who is willing to do almost anything for those whom you are loyal to. |
Thestral Hair | Those who are wise, perceptive, persuasive, caring, peaceful, gentle, and compassionate will have this wand core. Having such a wand core suggests that you frequently require trust and loyalty from your friends and families. In return, you are a loyal and caring friend. You ca be an incredibly driven and ambitious person when you set your mind to it, but you may often be content with a simple life and simple pleasures. |
Thestral Heartstring | Those who are cunning, possessive, dedicated, strong-willed, strong-minded, headstrong and occasionally obsessive will have this wand core. Having such a wand core suggests that you have a cold and thoughtless nature, and are firm with convictions. Like in the case of unicorn heartstring, thestral heartstrings tend to reflect the darker side of a thestral. |
Unicorn Hair | This core produces the most consistent magic, and is least subject to fluctuations and blockages. It will bring about the most faithful of wands, and it is very difficult for a wand of this core to turn to the Dark Arts. It does not make the most powerful of wands, and is the most common of the cores. |
Unicorn Heartstring | This is a very rare core, and is in the possession of those that are stubborn, cold, vengeful, independent, ruthless, cunning, and mischievous. You have the ability to love and be loved in your own way, but you tend to be possessive or overly protective of those things or people that you love. |
Veela Hair | Wands with this core type are not sold in England. They are exceptionally hard to tame, though they are loyal to their first owner. This wand is one that could be swayed toward the Dark Arts more easily than some others, though it would not incline in that direction on its own accord. |
Wand Woods | |
Acacia | It is rare to find a witch or wizard with this wand, as it is a very difficult match to make. Most owners of this wand are more subtle, and are not particularly showy in their magic or personalities. |
Alder | Alder wants are best suited for those that are not stubborn and are helpful, considerate and likeable. It is incredibly good for nonverbal spellwork, which is why this wood is known for only gracing the ones of those who are incredibly advanced and powerful witches and wizards. |
Apple | This wood is good for powerful witches and wizards, with high aims and does not work well with the dark arts. People with this wand are said to be well liked. |
Ash | Ash wands are very loyal. Owners of this wand are not easily swayed from their beliefs. They are stubborn, and courageous and absolutely never crass or arrogant. |
Aspen | Owners of this wand are very often incredible duelists, as it is a wand suited to martial magic. They are found to be strong-minded, determined, and liking adventure |
Bamboo | This wood favors those who are akin to spirit, akin to nature, and are wise, intuitive, observant, and occasionally reclusive. They are free-spirited and reserved, and usually won't duel or engage in violence unless they have no choice. They are rather good with elemental magic, and divination. |
Beech | A witch or wizard with this wand is wise beyond their years if they are chosen by a wand with this wood type at the age of eleven. They are also understanding, and will not work well for anyone that is intolerant and narrow-minded. |
Birch | Owners of this wand are normally ones that are very determined, occasionally arrogant, and with a quick mind, though it is not always used for good. This wand wood is not sold at Ollivander’s. |
Blackthorn | This is an unusual wand wood, and it is best suited to a warrior. However not necessarily one that is good or evil, as this is the wand of many aurors as well as Death Eaters. |
Black Locust | This wand wood favors those who are caring, compassionate, ambitious, creative, and witty. This wand doesn't favor light or dark magic, and can be used by any witch or wizard, but is particularly powerful with healing spells. |
Black Walnut | A witch or wizard with this wand would have good instincts, and a powerful insight. Best suited for sincere and self-aware owners. Particularly good for charmwork. |
Blackwood | A very unusual wand wood, some wizards and witches have found that they often refuse to produce magic for anyone but their owner, but also withholds their best effects from all but the most gifted. Owners are usually humble, gifted, and subtle. |
Bloodwood | Bloodwood is a remarkable wood mainly for its ability to utilize elemental energies. It favors those who are passionate, fiery, and free-spirited. This wand does best with a disciplined witch or wizard, though it often performs the best spells when the caster is very happy, or very angry, as it is fueled by strong emotions. |
Bocote | A wand type being made of a rare and valuable wood, it is commonly a wand for artists, writers, and creative thinkers. This wand wood favors those who seek knowledge, and those that are artistic and optimistic. |
Bois d'arc | This rare wand wood is good for those who are cunning, perceptive, and flexible. It is a wand that works well for Legilimency, and can sometimes be found in the hands of dark wizards and witches. |
Cedar | Anyone with this wand has strong character and loyalty. They are also quite perceptive people, and they are a frightening adversary though this is normally a shock to whoever crossed them. |
Cherry | This is a rare wood type to match. The owners would have exceptional self-control and strength of mind, and possesses lethal power. |
Chestnut | These wands are drawn to those who are naturals at taming wild beasts, as well as being skilled in Herbology and flying. Partnered with dragon heartstring, the owner is normally overfond of material possessions. |
Cocobolo | This rare wand wood favors strength, ambition, and those that are driven and goal-oriented. This wand type tends to lead toward adventure and often assists in the directing and achieving of goals, as it brings strength and endurance through difficult tasks. This wand often leans toward the dark arts. |
Cypress | This is a wood type associated with valour, meaning that their owner is often very brave, bold and self-sacrificing. They are not afraid to confront themselves and others. |
Dogwood | Owners of dogwood wands are normally playful and mischievous. They are not good for non-verbal spellwork. |
Ebony | This is a wand type well suited to combative magic and Transfiguration. People with this wand are not afraid to be themselves, are non-conformists, individuals, and do not care if they are an outsider. They will always hold fast to their benefits and will not be swayed by others. Both Death Eaters and Order of the Phoenix members have had this wand type. |
Elm | Elm wands prefer owners with presence, dexterity and dignity. They produce few accidents, errors, and are very sophisticated wands. |
Fir | Wizards and witches with this wand are resilient, focused, strong-minded, and occasionally intimidating. It is well suited for transfiguration. |
Hawthorn | These wands are complex and intriguing, and their owners are usually the same way. It is not an easy wand to master, meaning the owner has proven talent. It is good for healing magic, but curses as well. |
Hazel | An owner of this wand understands and manages their own feelings well. It is capable of incredible magic and is so loyal to its owner that it 'wilts' after they died, expelling all magic and refusing to perform for anyone else. |
Holly | This is a rare wand wood, and is common for those who need help overcoming a short temper and impetuosity. Often holly wands choose owners that are engaged in a dangerous or spiritual quest. |
Hornbeam | A wand with this wood would select a talented witch or wizard that has a singular and pure passion or vision. They adapt to their owners' magic quickly and so it is hard for others to use a hornbeam wand that is not theirs. |
Ivy | Owners of an ivy wand are powerful but do not necessarily realize it. They are humble and capable of great things in their lives. This wand is not sold at Ollivander’s. |
Juniper | These wands favor those who are steadfast, with a sense of justice. Owners of Juniper wands tend to stand their ground and won't back down unless absolutely necessary. |
Larch | This is a powerful wand wood, and the owner is normally courageous and confident. Owners of this wand normally have not realized their considerable talents until they have received this wand. |
Laurel | Some say that laurel wands cannot perform a dishonorable act. Though owners with it often find themselves in a quest for glory, and these wands can be powerful and lethal. It is not a wand well suited to those that are lazy or without great ambition. |
Lilac | This wand favors those who are loving, compassionate, protective, and driven. This wand does not do all that well with the dark arts, unless paired with specific cores. It is rather good with charms, particularly love spells. |
Mahogany | This wand is powerful, and pliable. It is good for witches and wizards that are interested in transfiguration. |
Maple | Owners of this wand are natural travellers and explorers. The wand would choose an owner that have ambition and enjoy challenges. Possession of a maple wand has long been a mark of status. |
Oak | This wand is loyal and looks for owners with strength, courage, and fidelity. The wand itself is very intuitive. |
Pear | Possessors of this wand are often popular and well-respected and have not ever been a wand discovered in the possession of a Dark wizard or witch. The perfect owner for this wand is a small witch/wizard with a temper several times their size. Although they have a warm personality, they are fierce when crossed. |
Pine | This wand will chose an independent master, one that is considered a loner and mysterious. They enjoy being used creatively. |
Plum | Often seen as a charming and appealing type of wand by some wandmakers, the owners of this type of wand tend to be mischievous, charming, and tend to enjoy causing trouble or mischief. This wand type tends to sway away from the dark arts and most destined for Slytherin house. |
Poplar | Witches and wizards with this wand are ones of high integrity and with a clear moral vision. A tired and incorrect joke among some wandmakers is that this wand would never choose a politician, but this is not the case. |
Redwood | This wood type is thought to bring good luck, but really, the wand simply looks for witches and wizards with a natural ability to fall on their feet. It is rare since the Redwood tree is a vulnerable species. |
Reed | This wand is not sold at Ollivander's in London, so an owner of this wand would come from a different country. Their owners are normally bold, as well as being eloquent speakers and protective friends. |
Rosewood | Owners of this wand are fond of luxury, and it is also quite a good wand for charmwork in particular, as well as healing spells. It is not sold at Ollivander's. |
Rowan | A wand with this wood is prized because of its reputation for protection because it was generally able to produce powerful and hard to break defensive charms. It is known for its disassociation with the Dark Arts. Wizards and witches with a rowan wand are pure-hearted, and this is a wand well suited for dueling. |
Silver lime | This is an unusual and attractive wand wood. These perform best for seers and those that are skilled in Legilimency, which gives owners of silver lime wands considerable status. |
Spruce | A wand with this wood is not suited for cautious or nervous individuals. It requires a firm hand. Owners of this wand would be bold with a good sense of humor. |
Sycamore | This wand is good for those who love new experiences, as it does work well for continued mundane activities. An owner of this wand is curious, vital, and adventurous. |
Vine | These are less common wands, and their owners often seek a greater purpose and have a vision beyond the ordinary. Commonly, owners of these wands astound those who think they know them best. This wand type is attracted to personalities with hidden depths, and are known to emit magical effects upon someone even entering the shop that is a suitable owner. |
Walnut | These wands are common for those who are highly intelligent, often magical innovators and inventors. This is a lethal wand in the hands of a witch or wizard of no conscience, as it will perform any task its owner desires, and this can have the wand and owner feed off of each other in an unhealthy manner. |
Willow | This is an uncommon wand wood. The ideal owner has some usually unwarranted insecurity, though they could be skilled at hiding it. These wands choose those with great potential, rather than those who feel they have little to learn. |
Yew | A rare wand wood, their ideal matches are commonly just as unusual. This wand has a dark and fearsome reputation in the spheres of dueling and curses. Many people that have a yew wand are more likely to be attracted to the Dark Arts, though this is not always the case. This wand is equally likely to be possessed by someone who becomes a fierce protector of others. This wand will never choose a mediocre or timid owner. |
