meeting you was fate, becoming your friend was a choice but this...this was beyond my control.
Piper's Apartment /Wednesday, August 1st, 2018. @brennan
It had been a long day for Piper, she had just finished working a long twelve-hour shift, and she was now coming home knowing that Brennan would be there. She could not help but be excited to see him. She could not believe how he had been so kind as to watch Jack for a few hours after a scheduling conflict had arisen between her and Arleigh's jobs. Piper wished she could choose a normal job, going back to social work would be a dream come true for her. She wished at the very least she could be paid for the job she was doing so that she could afford childcare for Jack. She had been so lucky so far that Arleigh had been able to organize her schedule around hers so that when she was working Arleigh could be home, but in this instance, Arleigh had no choice but to go and that left Piper without anyone to keep Jack on such short notice. Calling out was not exactly an option for Piper either, but she had been so lucky that Brennan had been willing to watch Jack for the few hours that Piper and Arleigh's schedules overlapped. He really was an amazing friend and she could not believe that fate had brought them back together after so long apart.

Things had not been exactly the same as where they had left off though, things were a little different this time, she could tell that the feelings she had noticed from the moment she had seen him had only grown with the few short times they had spent together since then. She was not exactly sure what to do about those feelings either. Things were so complicated in her life and he had so many new things going on in his life. She was not even sure if he would reciprocate those same feelings if she told him and the last thing she wanted was to lose such a good friend so soon after having just got him back in her life. However, being locked up for a year had made her anything but patient with life, she felt that every day outside of the gates of Kolna was a gift and she did not want to waste it doing anything but being the happiest she could be. She wanted to spend all of her free time with Arleigh and Jack and now Brennan too and that had to mean something. Still, she was apprehensive, to say the least about letting him know that these thoughts had crossed her mind.

She quietly unlocked the door, knowing that Jack might be asleep, she walked in and it was rather quiet and the house looked,....clean? How could this be? Her son was usually a walking tornado, she opened the door the rest of the way and hung up her jacket and purse on the coat rack and made her way into the living room area trying to be as quiet as possible in case everyone was asleep. She heard a noise a softly whispered "Brennan is that you?"

When fate gives you a hand

Brennan’s life had taken yet another turn for the different. The whole of last month had been a learning curve for him, between moving to Ireland and switching his career to something more on the educational side of things instead of the practical. It had not been the easiest switch for him, and the idea of being in the same place indefinitely still scared him a little, if he was being honest. The whole premise of becoming a Dragonologist had been the opportunity to travel. The chance to go from reserve to reserve, meeting as many peers as he could and soaking up information. There primary motivator was, of course, dragons, but that didn’t change the fact that Brennan hadn’t really ever viewed his career as what it was currently turning into. Dragonology had always been a field of travel and exploration and change. And now, it would be lecturing classes of young students, working out of an office, and… actually having someplace to call home.

That last one was still hard to believe. Ever since Brennan had graduated from Ilvermorny, he had been anything but grounded. There had never been a place, in the last fourteen years, that he could have possibly called home. And yet, now it was more true than he would have liked to admit. He had a house in Ireland. He had a job - the type that kept people around for decades. He had his own dragon reserve. The last month had felt something like an out of body experience. As Brennan floated above and watched all of these things unfold, his mind would not accept the true meaning of it all. Recently, though, it was becoming a lot easier to come to terms with the fact that he actually had his own home. Maybe it had all been a matter of time. Brennan, however, had a feeling it had had more to do with Piper.

Having Piper back in his life definitely made the UK feel more like a real home. She had always been one of Brennan’s closest friends, one of the few people that he could say he had grown close to. As much as Brennan was a social person and had an easy time making friends, there were very few people that he would consider as good as family. Piper was one of those few people, though, and Brennan had a feeling that having her around definitely made him less resistant to the idea of being grounded to one place. And, seeing as this was turning into an honesty hour, Brennan knew that there was more to it than just having his best friend back. He hadn’t seen Piper as just his friend since their reunion. As much as he had tried to push that thought out of his mind, as much as he had tried to reason it out… it wasn’t leaving. The plain and simple truth was that he looked at Piper and she made him feel like they could be something more.

Brennan knew that wasn’t fair of him, though. She had a son, and a whole slew of problems thanks to the Ministry. She needed a friend that could be there for her - not another person to worry about. So that was what Brennan would be. He was happy that he could just be around for her and spend time with her. That was why he had leapt at the chance to give her a hand with Jack. And anyways, Brennan had his fair share of experience with kids, thanks to the few months he had taken off work to help out his sisters when they had had their children, so he had had a feeling that the evening would go well - and he had been right in that respect. Jack was a rambunctious and energetic kid, but Brennan had been very much the same, so it had really just been a matter of keeping up with him until he was tuckered out.

Jack had actually ended up falling asleep about an hour before Piper was due to get back home, so Brennan had taken the time to clean up the aftermath of the little guy. He was searching around her fridge for something to cook up, thinking she might be feeling hungry after her long day, when Brennan heard Piper’s voice coming from the living room. He stood up, closing the fridge door and looking over at her. She looked tired, but seeing her face still put a smile on his face. "Hey," Brennan whispered back as he walked through the kitchen and to the living room towards Piper, "kiddo’s in bed. I could make you something to eat, if you want. How was work?" he asked.

MEETING YOU WAS FATE, BECOMING YOUR FRIEND WAS A CHOICE BUT THIS...THIS WAS BEYOND MY CONTROL.
It had been a very long day for Piper, but on her way home, the anticipation of seeing Brennan had been enough to put a smile on her face. She just wanted to be in his company and she knew nothing would make her feel better after a long day of work than to see his handsome face. She knew that she wanted something more but she felt it was too much to ask from someone she had just gotten back into her life. She liked him though, and she had to finally admit that to herself. How could she not? he was handsome and charming and utterly there for her, he had made her life better from the moment he had knocked on her door which made her all the more apprehensive to lose him. He was too special to her, and she did not want to do anything to mess it up, but her mind still wondered the what ifs. What if he felt the same? What if it could be the start of something amazing? It was enough to send her mind swirling.

She had come home and into a clean house, a soundly sleeping child and kind face staring back at her, what more could she have asked for? Brennan's cheerful greeting had immediately put a smile on her face "hey" she softly said back. He offered to make her something to eat which for a single mother who had been doing it all by herself for so long now that was perhaps the sweetest thing he could have offered. "That sounds amazing, is there anything worth making in there?" she asked. He asked her about work and she said: "it was work, nothing too special for the day". She wanted nothing more than a quick shower to rinse off the sting of the hard day "I'm just going to take a quick shower and change" she said hoping he wouldn't mind.

She got out of the shower and put on something comfortable, with her hair still a little wet and curly she entered back into the kitchen and something smelt amazing "what's that? it smells amazing" she asked. Looking at Brennan she could not believe how lucky she was that he was here and that he had been so kind to her.

Brennan had been all too eager to offer to help Piper that particular night. It had almost been automatic - like an instinct. Why wouldn't he? He was glad for the chance to help her, and felt like he had to make up for nearly twenty years work of helping out. Of course, that wasn't entirely true. It wasn't like Brennan had done anything to make that the case but... it didn't change the fact that he felt this need to be there for Piper. And if she needed someone there to watch her son, then he would be that person. Besides, as far as tasks went, Brennan had been pretty sure that that much he could handle. He had had more than enough experience in the months he had helped out his sisters with their kids, and ever since the move to Ireland had spent plenty of time around his nephew. Spending a few hours with Jack didn't really seem like the most daunting task he could have been given, and Brennan did actually have the time. Until the school year at Lig-na-Paiste started, his schedule was the most flexible it had been in years.

His instincts had been right about Jack. They had gotten on well - or as well as a grown man and a one year-old could get along. It was still a little unreal for Brennan that Piper, the young girl he had called his best friend, now had her own child. But he had missed a lot of her life, and he supposed they had both changed a lot. Still, after all that change, they got along as if nearly no time had passed. Even better, actually. Or, rather, a bit differently. There was a different dynamic between them now, and Brennan figured it just had something to do with them growing up. Brennan knew he had more of a sincerity and maturity to him that his fourteen year-old self had definitely not had, and he figured that Piper had changed in her own way as well. As much as they had grown apart, it seemed that they found each other again, but this time... Brennan wanted more than just to call Piper a friend.

He had resolved that wasn't fair of him, though. She had to take care of herself and her son, more than ever now with everything going on in England. Not that that made it any easier to push those thoughts out of his head. Brennan laughed lightly at her question. "Oh, I wouldn't worry about that - I'm pretty creative," he said with a wink. It was the things like that that he really ought to have stopped doing... but they came out all too easily around Piper. "Yeah, of course, go ahead," he said with a nod, growing a bit more serious. Talking about work with Piper was just one thing that he had yet to learn how to navigate. Part of him wanted to her to tell him everything. To just use him to vent it all out. Another part of him wanted to help her forget it all.

As Piper left to shower, he set his sights back on the kitchen and headed for the fridge again. There wasn't a lot - which was to be expected, and Brennan made a note to help fix that. But there was some food to make sandwiches, at least. He eventually started cooking some of the vegetables and meat in a pan, deciding to go with a panini. Something warm, at least. He hadn't even notice the shower shut off or heard Piper walk into the kitchen, but when he looked up to meet her eyes, he felt himself pausing a bit. He felt like he was getting lost in her eyes, for a split second, if that was even remotely possibly. For one of the very few times in his life, Brennan found himself nearly stumbling over his words. Clearing his throat, he answered, "Oh, um - it's a panini. Nothing special, you had stuff for sandwiches but I figured you might want something warm." He finished up then, assembled everything and placed it on a plate. He walked over to the small dining area and placed the plate on the dining table as he looked over at Piper with a smile. "Here, sit down - I really don’t know how you haven’t fallen over yet," Brennan said with a laugh, pulling out the chair right next to the one that was meant to be Piper's.

MEETING YOU WAS FATE, BECOMING YOUR FRIEND WAS A CHOICE BUT THIS...THIS WAS BEYOND MY CONTROL.
Word Count: 712
When Piper had been in the shower she had gotten a little lost in thought, she thought about how crazy her life had been, and all the things that had happened to lead her here, to this moment with Brennan. She had never been one to believe in fate, but the more she thought on the matter the more she could not help but to feel like it was. She had not planned on meeting anyone, in truth she had given up completely on the hope of ever finding someone again. She chuckled a little, she guessed she did not meet someone new, Brennan was not new, Brennan had been in her mind for decades now. She could not help but be intrigued by the man he had become, he was so kind and generous and he had already done more for her in the short time they had been back in each other's lives than the friends she had for years had done.

She remembered her friends that she had made during her years in the social working, her colleagues that had stood by and done nothing when she had been locked up in Kolna, save for Monica, whose daughter ensured the safe return of her baby to Arleigh, but even then it wasn't as if Monica had done it, though she was sure once she saw the baby she was inclined to help. However, had it been her that Jesse had asked to sneak her child out of Kolna, she was almost certain that she would have said no. She did not want to jeopardize her safety by helping her which Piper understood, but she felt that Brennan would have done it, Brennan would have risked it all for her if he had to of this much she was fairly certain but she could not tell if it was because of her specifically or if it was just how Brennan was as a person.

She wondered if he had been feeling the same way she had, from the moment she had opened her door that night to see him standing there right in front of her, like a dream that had come to life, she had not been able to shake this feeling, this feeling growing in the pit of her stomach that said: just kiss him. She had been resisting this feeling for so long, trying to push it away, push it back, shove it down a flight of stairs, but she could not, it was there, it was real and she did not know how she was going to keep avoiding it. She wondered what would happen if she stopped ignoring it, how would he react? She went through the scenarios in her head and by the time she had gotten out of the shower and come to dinner she had played them all out one by one. She was pleasantly shocked by what he had managed to do for her, it was not an overly extravagant meal or anything fancy but it meant so very much to her, it was just someone doing something nice for her for no reason at all and she had really forgotten what that felt like.

It was all about the little things that Brennan had been doing that made her start to feel this draw towards him start with a poke and grow into a shove, her heart practically pulling her towards him. Just when she thought he could not get any sweeter, he pulled out a chair for her to sit on, which should have been something small and insignificant, but to Piper, it meant the world. She had not been treated this way in a long time and she did not want it to end. "Thank you", she said gratefully, as she sat down, "oh I am fine, perhaps you are getting old Mr. Flynn, but I am still a very energetic young lady", she said teasingly with a laugh tossing her hair a bit for effect. Then she narrowed her eyes a bit in seriousness "but I am happy to be home and I am happy you are here, I hope I haven't interfered with any plans you might have for tonight too much" she said with sincerity.

For someone that was so sociable, Brennan had always been somewhat alone. Sure, his family was always there whenever he wanted to visit them, but he was always moving from place to place, a different crowd of faces nearly every year. Family was the one constant, but even them he didn't see a whole lot of. Now that he was in Ireland, he got together with Aisling on a regular basis, and he obviously still kept in touch with Cait and Kiera and his parents, but that was about it. Even as far as friends went, it was hard to have something solid and steady when he moved around so much. And as far as romantic relationships went... well, looking at Brennan's history, it was either non-committal or fleeting. And that wasn't really because he had any particular aversion towards relationships, but more so because of the same issue as always: he moved. A lot. There was no point in digging roots when he would be gone again within the year. Brennan rather liked the idea of an actual, normal relationship, if he was being honest, but there had never really been a perfect time for that sort of thing.

And then there was Piper. Probably the first person in a long time that Brennan just felt... comfortable around. And maybe part of that had to do with the shift in his life. The sudden realization that there was no 'next year' anymore. It was Ireland, for the foreseeable and distant future. That prospect seemed to open up Brennan's heart, in a way. That side of him that had always been apprehensive about optimism, worried about setting the bar too high, was no running free... and straight for Piper. She had gotten back into his life with near perfect timing, and Brennan liked to think there was no such thing as a coincidence. Everything was meant to happen the way it happened. That was why it was so hard to ignore what was right in front of him. Yes, his best friend, back in his life... but part of Brennan was seeing so much more. Piper had become this loving and amazing person. Selfless and kind, and it just wasn't something that Brennan could turn away from. And... of course beautiful. That had been the first thing to pop in his mind, whether he liked admitting it or not.

But Piper had her own life and a myriad of troubles. Brennan, at this point, was just glad that he got to be a part of it. That he could help somehow, even if it was just watching her son for a few hours. Or making her dinner. This was perfectly fine. He had to be the bigger person and just stifle the part of him that was trying to be a little more selfish than was appropriate. Brennan shook his head with a laugh as he pulled out a char next to Piper and sat down at the dining table as well. "Yes, a mere two months younger does make a world of a difference," he commented sarcastically, still laughing a bit as he leaned back in the char. His eyes stayed focused on Piper, a peaceful grin on his face. The smile fell a bit at her next words, though, and he leaned forward, reaching to cover her hand with his own. "Goodness, no. I'm glad to help, Piper. Don't ever feel bad for this sort of thing," Brennan immediately replied. He paused, then smiled a little playfully. "Besides, you would be surprised at how easy it was to get some of my readings done, even with Jack around. Fair warning - his first word might be 'dragon,'" he joked. Well, it wasn't that much of joke. He had been reading out loud for a while there, if only because it had kept both of them busy.

MEETING YOU WAS FATE, BECOMING YOUR FRIEND WAS A CHOICE BUT THIS...THIS WAS BEYOND MY CONTROL.

Piper had never been able to depend on a ton of people, she was usually the dependable one. She was the one that was supposed to be responsible and have her stuff together. It had been this way as long as she could remember. In the orphanage, she was supposed to behave well beyond her years if she expected to ever get adopted. Then she maintained that image with her new parents, always trying to be well behaved and accountable even at the ripe old age of five. She felt a sense of duty and responsibility when her younger sister was born. She was so much older than Arleigh and it made her feel more like a third parent sometimes than an older sister. She was forced to grow up even more quickly when her parents died suddenly, leaving her little sister orphaned and underage. She took Arleigh in not because she had to but because that is just what Piper did, she helped people, she stepped up, she took responsibility when no one else would. That is likely what had landed her in social work. She had tried so hard for so long to fight what was just in her nature. Of course always being the responsible one left very little time for relaxing or partying but Piper never really seemed to mind missing out on those things, but she did miss having time just for herself, just to enjoy herself. That was something that Piper had never really experienced in her adult life, and it made it hard for her to know what to do when someone was just willing to be there for her, for no reason at all other than the fact that they cared about her and were a good friend. She loved this about Brennan and it made falling back into their friendship that much easier, although now those friendly feelings were beginning to turn into something so much more.

She had not expected these feelings to grow or for her to be practically praying for him to kiss her right now, but here she was feeling those things. She did not know how it would change things if he did, but she was getting nearly intoxicated by the mere idea of it happening. Brennan was the total package, he was kind, funny, driven, and handsome, oh was he handsome Piper thought to herself as she watched him lean back in the chair, returning his own witty remark to hers, which made her laugh. "two months more of aging Brennan, two.whole.months" she said sarcastically. She loved the way they could joke around together and just be themselves without all the pressures that the outside world put on them from day to day. She felt him lean in holding her hand with his own, and she would be lying if she didn't say that a chill went down her spine. She wanted him, and it was a feeling she was not used to anymore, but with Brennan it almost felt like riding a broom, she could never forget how to ride one much like she could never forget how to fall for someone. He talked about how easy Jack had been for him and the idea of the two of them playing and reading together brought an even wider smile to her face. He joked that Jack's first word might be dragon and she let out a little giggle "I would expect nothing less with you as his sitter" she joked. She finished her meal and got up to rinse her plate in the sink, part of her trying to keep her distance from Brennan lest she do something she would possibly regret, the other part of her praying he would close this new gap between them. "That was delicious, a wonderful change from grilled cheese for once," she said humorously, "I feel like there is nothing you cant do, you can teach, write books, handle dragons, operate a business, babysit, and even cook, I must say you have become quite the impressive man" her tone was joking but she truly did not understand how the man was still a bachelor.

[attr="class","textbodspec"]Brennan was a very extroverted person, and he always enjoyed meeting new people and reining in the attention--but despite all of that, he had always been more or less alone. His family had always been the main constant in his life, but with all of the travelling that Brennan did, he didn't even get to see them all that much. It did make him a little sad, because while he knew he could always reach out to his parents and sisters, it wasn't quite the same as having someone around. And beyond family, Brennan had never been in one place long enough to make it feel like home. He fit in every single time in every new place, but he never had anyone constant. Brennan had always accepted that as a consequence of his career path. Travelling for work was always a double-edged sword. On one hand, he got to see the world and push his limits. But on the other, no place would quite feel like home. No place would be home, really.

But things were different now that Brennan had decided to stay in Ireland indefinitely. Now that he had a position as a professor, and now that the fate of his grandparents' reserve basically rested in his hands. They had been at it too long to keep it open on their own, and Brennan couldn't exactly blame his mother and uncle for wanting to stay abroad. But it wasn't just the decision to stay in one place that made Ireland feel like home--it was the fact that, for the first time in his life, Brennan had people in his life that he knew he would see again and again. He was close to two of his sisters, for the first time in what had felt like ages, but beyond that... there was Piper. He had been reunited with someone that Brennan never thought he would see again. And yet, here she was--very much in his life. It still felt a little surreal, but in a perfectly great way.

Brennan knew that there had been something different between the two of them. Or maybe it was simply on his end, in which case he really needed to rein it in. Because this was not Piper's first priority by any means, and Brennan just... he wanted to make up for lost time and be there for Piper as much as possible. He laughed and shook his head at her joking reply. "Fine--but that also means I have two whole months of extra wisdom on you," Brennan shot back smartly. "Well, give it another sixteen, seventeen years and he'll be on the reserve." Honestly, Brennan would not have minded that at all. And he quite liked Piper's kid--even the few hours they had spent together.

His eyes followed Piper as she stood up and washed her plate, then Brennan stood up as well and walked over to her in the kitchen, stopping to stand next to her as he leaned against the counter. "I'm glad you liked it," he replied with a small smile. Brennan let out a light laugh at her words and the grin on his face widened a bit. "You know, you're doing wonders for my ego, Piper," he replied. "I had it pretty easy, though. You--you're a survivor. That's more impressive than anyone could ever even dream to be," Brennan continued, his tone a bit softer.

MEETING YOU WAS FATE, BECOMING YOUR FRIEND WAS A CHOICE BUT THIS...THIS WAS BEYOND MY CONTROL.
Piper was surprised at how easy this was coming to her, she had never been the girl that was overly sought after. Even with Jack's dad....her husband...boy could she even say that anymore? How could a dead man be a husband? but he had meant so much to her and it felt wrong to call him less than that, but she had also been through so much in the short time since his death. She had been through it all without him too and it made her somewhat hold a resentment towards him for not being there.

She knew it was crazy to resent someone that was gone but it just felt like he had left her to carry out their dreams and to protect their child all by herself and that task had proven to not be an easy one thus far. She worried about Jack all of the time and she supposed that most mothers worried about their kids all of the time but this was different, she worried that he would be taken the way she had been or that she would be taken again and he would grow up alone without either of his parents to see it.

She worried about the day that he would come to her with a million questions to ask and for her to only have some of the answers or worse none at all. She worried he would resent her for what happened to his father or resent her for having him in a world that did things like this to people for no reason at all. Still, she tried to remember her late husband in a fond light but as time passed it became harder and harder to remember him at all.

They had not been together very long before they married and had a child which now seemed silly to piper but in the heat of the moment it had just seemed like love. Either way, she was out of practice with love, she and love had separated and she fully expected to never see it again, but since the moment Brennan had entered her life again she could deny the faintest of hope that maybe it was not over for her after all.

She found herself creating space that she did not want to create and complimenting Brennan like she was his number one fan, she knew she sounded silly but she was nervous and she needed to try and reel it back in. She looked down at the dish as the water ran over it and she closed her eyes trying to center herself and to remember that she was a grown woman and not some silly schoolgirl. She looked back at him with a look that said 'yeah right' when he mentioned his two months more of life experience before laughing and rolling her eyes a bit in jest.

He mentioned Jack working on the reserve, "well only if you promise to be the one to teach him the ropes" she laughed. Then almost as if Brennan could read her mind he stood up and came over to where she was, leaning against the counter she began to compliment him some more her mouth not knowing how to stop as she felt her heart race with him near. He laughed and said she was doing wonders for his ego, she turned to face him still drying the plate in her hand with a cloth, and raising her brow a bit seductively "am I now?". He began to compliment her in return and she looked down as she listened to him go on as she realized how much he had listened to her and understood her.
