Take it down,
break it over
Until they fit together

Cas knew this was a horrible idea.

He’d come to Hogwarts with a bunch of kids – hell, he’d been the one to help ferry the first years over the lake to the school – and he’d come down with the worst cold that he’d had in years.

He didn’t get these kinds of sicknesses when he lived in Africa, he thought with a groan as he turned over to face the wall. He sure as hell didn’t catch a cold from a dragon. Maybe Dragonology was the least dangerous career out there, after all. He’d had his Dragon Pox immunity shot…but he didn’t think there was a shot to protect against children’s flu. He deserved this…this was what he got for trying to win his wife over.

Turning over, Lejoe looked up at him from the floor, cocking his head to the left as he tried to figure out what was wrong with his master. He didn’t have an answer for his pup, however. Over the past few days, he had been getting progressively worse from whatever foul, child-borne illness he’d contracted. Cas had been able to push through it for the first few days. A cold wasn’t really anything to worry about, but it was this morning when his fever spiked that Cas wondered if he would even be able to get out of bed. Surely Hogwarts could go on without a Groundskeeper for one day, couldn’t they? Surely. they wouldn’t miss him at breakfast or lunch…maybe he could drag himself out for dinner, he thought. Then again, as he rolled over once more and a shooting pain ricocheted through his head…perhaps it was better if he just stayed here for the rest of the evening. He didn’t need to eat, right?

Was it cold in here? All of a sudden, it felt as if someone had turned up the air conditioning in the cabin. Which was impossible because…he controlled all of that, didn’t he? It was magically regulated. That wouldn’t do, he thought as he tried to force his eyes open. Cas’ hand fumbled for his wand on the small bedside table next to him. With a grunt, he pointed it at the fireplace.
Incendio,” he managed. The wand gave a small spark, as if it was attempting to boot up or something and then flickered out. Nothing shot out of the end…no flames, no magic. Cas closed his eyes. This was just what he needed. He needed to be stuck in this tiny cabin with a broken wand. “Karolo ea shit,” he said, throwing the wood onto the ground. He should have been smart and learned wandless with Zuri. That would have come in handy right about now. Instead, he had been more focused on trying to wrestle dragons in his free time.

The front door to the cabin gave a loud creak and almost immediately a steady stream of light hit him smack dab in the face.
“No, koala lemati, letsatsi le khanyang haholo,” he muttered, pulling the covers up over his head. He needed to shake this…it was getting unbearable. He hoped that it was Saoirse. Perhaps because he hadn’t shown up at meals today, she had gotten worried. That was what he hoped. If he was lucky, it wasn’t the Headmaster. He didn’t really want to have to explain to Flint why he was still lying in bed at nearly eight o’clock at night. The door closed and he tried to sit up, but he barely was able to rais his head more than a few inches. “Mosali?” he asked, really, really hoping that it was his wife.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Cas showing up at the start-of-term feast had not been what she’d expected.
[break][break]
That was the understatement of the year, in fact. Ever since they had decided not to divorce, and they’d decided to try to work through their problems, Saoirse had been second guessing going back to the school.
[break][break]
She liked teaching--she did. But being stuck in a boarding school for the vast majority of the year did not bode well for reconciliation. She was the head of Gryffindor house. Saoirse didn’t really think that she could get away with leaving every other weekend like some of the other professors that taught electives did. They didn’t need to be around all the time.
[break][break]
She, however, did. Or at least, she certainly felt like she did. Saoirse had thought about looking into a position at Lig-Na-Paiste. A university job would give her more freedom to work on her marriage, to figure things out and to spend time with Cas. In the end, though, she perhaps wasn’t the best at follow-through. In that case, anyway. She hadn’t managed to get around to going to the school before the Hogwarts term was upon them and once that happened, she knew that she’d need to wait. The last thing that she wanted to do was leave them without a professor and head of house in the middle of the term.
[break][break]
Saoirse had figured that they would… work it out. They always did. Granted, they were used to being together nearly all of the time and in very close quarters while they were married and even for a while, while they were dating. Distance wasn’t something that they’d had all that much experience with in the past.
[break][break]
At least, not distance when they both actually knew they were married.
[break][break]
The past year hadn’t counted, necessarily, since she had thought that they were divorced. But apart from that, they honestly hadn’t spent all that much time apart while they were married. Her being at a boarding school was going to be… something that they would have to adapt to.
[break][break]
That was what she had thought, anyway, until he had walked into the feast--with a dog, no less. He was here. She couldn’t even bring herself to be mad that he hadn’t told her because she had known that she was going to miss him. Knowing that he would be here too, and with a cabin that was very close to her enclosure she taught in… well, that could only be good news. That was all there was to it.
[break][break]
Assuming that he could manage to keep this job, at least. He wasn’t exactly used to rigidity either, not that being the groundskeeper involved keeping to too strict of a schedule. Not seeing him for any meal today, however… that wasn’t exactly promising. She figured she needed to make sure he realized that, because the last thing that either of them wanted was for him to get fired for not managing to drag himself out of his cabin all day.
[break][break]
When she opened the door to his cabin, the first thing she noticed was how dark it was in there, apart from the light she’d brought into the place with the door still open. The second was her husband in bed, and Lejoe already up and ready to greet her. “Have you let him out today?” She asked, her eyebrows raised as she watched the pup race outside. “Have you gotten out of bed?” Saoirse kept her eyes partially on the dog to make sure that he didn’t run off into the forest, but once he had finished doing his business, he was scampering back inside.
[break][break]
It was only then that she shut the door behind them. “What’s wrong with you?”

[attr="class","reasonbodcas"]“Too bright,” Cas complained, as his wife left the door open to presumably let Lejoe outside. Though he still had his back turned to the bright light, he could see it casting a shadow of his bed-ridden form on the stone wall in front of him. He attempted to close his eyes tighter, but it seemed like the damage was already done. Now, on top of the sickness that he felt in his belly, he had a headache to contend with.

In truth, he hadn’t gotten out of bed today. And Lejoe wasn’t exactly pleased that his master had decided to play hooky. It was, perhaps, good that they didn’t have children. If Cas could barely manage to care for a dog, he wasn’t sure how he would do with another human mouth to feed. But, he supposed if they did have children, their lives would be a little different.

Mosali would probably make him give up wrestling with Classification XXXXX creatures for good. With good reason, Cas supposed as he let out a sigh. If they started a family, perhaps she would retire from this awful cesspool of disease and sickness…perhaps they could go home. Maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea, after all.

Then again, Cas didn’t think his wife would take kindly to his proposition. Suggesting that they have children for the sole purpose of getting out of the hell hole that was this hut was most likely not what she had in mind. In fact, Cas wasn’t even sure if Saoirse wanted children. It hadn’t been something they’d discussed – ever. Perhaps it was that they had been too young, or too immature to think of themselves as parents. In fact, Cas still thought they were too young for such things. He was a free spirit – not to be caged. Except…he had decided that settling down with his wife was more important than the life that he had led before. Thus…here they were.

He sighed. “This is what I get for following you here,” Cas said, rolling over so that he could see her more clearly. Even as sick as he was, he couldn’t deny that his wife was the most radiant thing in the world. He had thought the sun too bright, but she seemed to give off a comforting, warm light that he wanted to gravitate towards. And he would…at least, he might have had he not felt like death every time he moved his limbs.

“Nothing,” Cas said as he stared at her. The most beautiful thing he had ever seen – the only beautiful thing he’d seen all day, in fact. When she finally shut the door and he was able to see her more clearly, he felt his face fall. With the light gone, he was beginning to feel it more: the sickness that seemed to swirl around his belly. Merlin’s Beard, he felt like he was going to throw up all over the cabin. It was like being drunk only worse. Because this time, he’d done nothing to deserve it.

It was obvious that Saoirse wasn’t going to fall for his lies – not that he was in any position to be lying, anyway. It was obvious that there was something wrong with him, so he figured he might as well come clean. “Sick. Must have caught something from these kids,” he muttered, struggling to sit up. His head was spinning again, but he chose to focus on his wife’s face for some stability. It seemed to help a little. “On top of it all, my wand is broken. And the air in this damn cabin is on the fritz.”

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]When they had finally thrown out those divorce papers for good, Saoirse had been happy. Nervous, still—because she knew that they were the same people. She knew that they were still going to fight and scream at each other, and there was still a chance that their relationship was going to end up in absolute ruins. But she had been happy too, because she had missed him. It had felt like she wasn’t completely whole when she was away from him and when they had finally decided that they were going to work this out, everything seemed a little brighter. A little better.
[break][break]
It had made her wonder if going back to Hogwarts was the right choice for them. She knew that it would certainly complicate things. It would mean having to reconcile and work through all of their issues while seeing each other far less. After all, she had to stay at Hogwarts most of the time. It came with the territory as a head of house. She couldn’t just leave every night and come home to him, as tempting as it would be.
[break][break]
But in the end, she had felt too bad to resign from the school with so little notice. It was something that she thought she could consider at a later date—maybe over the Christmas holidays, since that would at least give the headmaster the holidays to find a replacement. Or if she felt too bad to even give him a few weeks of time to replace her, she figured she could always wait until next summer. That would surely be enough time for him to find a replacement with no problem.
[break][break]
Either way, it wasn’t something that she’d had to worry about at all when Cas had shown up at the start-of-term feast. He had gotten a job there, which meant that they wouldn’t have to worry about being apart at all. Of course, she didn’t know how long he would be able to work at a school with students without going mad, but it was definitely a better solution than being apart. It would work for the timebeing.
[break][break]
Of course, now she had to worry about him getting fired before the first month of school was even over. She hadn’t seen him all day and she wasn’t sure what excuse he could possibly have for that. She wasn’t his mother and she wasn’t there to nag him, but it made her look bad too. “Oh, don’t whine,” she rolled her eyes. She hadn’t forced him to come get a job at the school. She wouldn’t deny that she’d been pleased about it, but it had been entirely his idea.
[break][break]
Saoirse watched as Lejoe jumped up on the armchair and curled up, before her gaze moved back over to her husband. He really did look entirely miserable, but until he said that he was sick, she figured that he was just being dramatic and that he didn’t like having to get up at a reasonable time to do an actual job. “Your wand is broken?” She asked, distractedly, as she sat down on the bed next to him and brought a hand to his forehead. “You have a fever.” At least he wasn’t skipping work for no reason at all. “Are you too hot? Cold?” She thought that it felt fine in here, but she could always turn the fire on if he wanted, or cool it down if that was what he wanted. She thought she should probably fix him something to eat too, since he clearly hadn’t eaten all day.

[attr="class","reasonbodcas"]“Don’t patronize me, Mosali,” Cas was miserable, he thought as he turned away from her face, trying to curl into a tight ball. He had missed her. As much as Cas wanted to say that Saoirse's voice chastising him about his attitude was something he would rather live without, he wasn't sure that he could. She was the one who always kept him on the straight and narrow…at least, as much as someone like Cas could be kept on that path.

And, he had chosen this. He had chosen them.

When the opportunity had presented itself to join his Mosali here at Hogwarts, Cas had barely even thought about the words coming out of his mouth as he applied and accepted. In fact, the only thing he could think about was the look of shock — and surprise — that would undoubtedly appear on his wife’s face the moment he revealed himself as the new Groundskeeper at Hogwarts.

In truth, he wasn’t sure if he was hot or cold. He wasn’t sure which way was up and which was down. And he also wondered how he had managed to catch the worst case of kiddie flu imaginable being the Caretaker. It wasn’t like he was cleaning up the little ones’ snot every class period. He was dealing with important things…like how to keep Saoirse’s creatures from getting out of their enclosures at night. He certainly had more important things to worry about than getting sick.

But a part of him knew that she was right. She always was. He was being overly dramatic. But Cas had never claimed to be very good at playing the ill husband. And, now that Saoirse was here, he wanted nothing more than to curl up while she held him.

“It’s nothing more than a stick,” he said, anger in his voice. “Throw it away,” If his wand was working, would he really still be sitting here? He could use it to pour himself some tea…or something stronger. Today, he was silently cursing himself for not taking as much care as Zuri to learn Wandless. It would be helpful right about now, he imagined.

As Cas sat up slowly, he looked away. The spinning sensation seemed to have subsided for now, but he wondered how long it would last. “I am both,” he said, almost sheepishly. It was not in Cas’ nature to admit that he wasn’t feeling well. “Neither.” A vague answer, as was almost expected from him.

He struggled to explain, pulling the thin sheet off of his legs to reveal skin prickled with goosebumps. .“My body is on fire. Like sitting too close to a dragon’s mouth, Mosali, but I cannot warm myself.” It was oxymoronic, but Cas had never felt anything like it.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Cas showing up at the start-of-term fest with a job at Hogwarts and a new dog to boot wasn’t what she had expected of this term, but it had been nice. It was a surprise, and she didn’t want to admit how glad she was to have him around. But that would only stay true as long as he was doing his job. If he didn’t show up or leave the cabin all day, then he was eventually going to be sacked, and since her name was officially back to Ndumiso, that would just make her look bad too. Everyone knew that they were married—if he was lazy and got fired, they were eventually going to wonder if she was lazy by association or something.
[break][break]
Obviously, he had to do a good job so they could avoid something like that happening. Saoirse didn’t think that exactly needed saying, but apparently it had. It hadn’t even crossed her mind that Cas had been sick or anything like that. She had just assumed that he and the dog had been hanging out in the cabin, figuring groundskeeper work could keep for another day. And really, it could. Nothing was going to fall to pieces because he didn’t do something one day, but that wasn’t even the point.
[break][break]
She had nearly forgotten how often she had the urge to roll her eyes around her husband, but she held herself back and shook her head instead. “I’m not patronizing you. You are whining.” He was a grown man. He could deal with a cold or whatever else he had caught. People got sick all of the time, and they didn’t all hide in bed all day. Some of them didn’t have that ability and had to work.
[break][break]
Still, upon closer examination, he didn’t look all that well. It wasn’t that she had thought that he was lying about being sick or anything. More like exaggerating it, possibly. But he didn’t look all that well, so immediately a switch flipped, and she went from irritate to concerned in a flash. “You know, most people from Uagadou don’t need a wand,” she reminded him, raising her eyebrows while she checked him for a fever. It was true, after all. She had been in Africa long enough to know that most people did without it entirely. Cas had definitely been an exception to that. Still, she was sure that his wand wasn’t broken, though she didn’t know where it was. Maybe there had been some damage done to it. It was possible, after all. Wands couldn’t withstand everything.
[break][break]
Saoirse hummed as he spoke again, her brow furrowing as she tried to remember what she knew about fevers. Quite honestly, she didn’t get sick all that often—and neither had Cas, from what she knew of him. There were at least a few things she knew to do, even if she wasn’t sure how effective they would be. Since he was sitting up, she propped up some pillows behind him and gestured at them so he would lay back against them.
[break][break]
At least then she could get him to drink some water or something. Staying hydrated was important no matter what ailment they were dealing with. “I’ll get you some water and a cold compress. Or do you want me to start a bath?” A cool bath would probably help too—probably more than a compress, the more that she thought about it.
