Body like a backroad
The way she fit in them blue jeans
she don't need no belt

Katya did not love to shop in the traditional sense. She had no desire to try on clothes for hours (or even minutes). She didn't want to just 'browse' through Diagonal Alley. Stores with neat shelves filled with pristine boxes and copies upon copies of the very same thing were fine for the mundane every day necessities. She would accept that for shampoo, soap and the like. But for gifts for her family, such shops would never do. This meant gathering things for Christmas took time now that she was back in the UK. It had been easier when she was abroad. Then, she could get things special to the country she was living in at the time.

She had learned last year that she should have started much earlier to be able to do right by her kin--to be able to find them intimate, personal gifts. So, she had asked around for interesting shops to visit. The Raven's Nest had been suggested more than once, more than thrice even. So, here she was--and it was worth the visit to Toadstool End.

The shelves were filled with all matter of things. Katya had already set aside a very crude set of self shuffling playing cards from the 60s for Lennox. She was sure her brother would love them. They were nearly as vulgar as he tended to be. Calgary would be the hardest to buy for. She always was. Cal had always been a little bit of an outsider to the rest of them--not due to sex or sexuality, but in interest and temperament. Kat, Kane and Lennox had been rowdy Gryffindors. They drank and chased dragons. Cal had never been about that life. A bookish, quiet Hufflepuff, Cal never wanted anything to do with the MacFusty clan business. They loved her though--and thought the world of her. But it was just hard to know what might please her. Katya would probably end up putting off getting that gift until the last minute just out of indecisiveness.

Someone else was making their way down the chaotic aisle and Katya moved to one side. "Don't worry about telling me to move if I'm in the way. I'm just looking." She told them, flashing a bright smile. The veela had no wixen magic left now, so she had no dampening on her veela allure. If this person liked the ladies and was weak to the influence of her kind, things might get much more interesting.

Her youngest sister's birthday was coming up. Roshanara was modern, and despicably so-- always onto the next thing. she'd asked for a collection of knickknacks, which apparently she was going to make into something. Raisa didn't question her-- it was always better not to. Things always went well that way, when Raisa didn't question and irritate Rosha, and Rosha was left to do her own things. It had only taken Soraya ten years to learn that, but Raya had always gotten along so much more interestingly with the other middle girl. After all, they were both in the true middle, they'd both had to fill the shoes Raisa had left in Uagadou, and they both were prone to arguing with each other.

She missed her younger sisters, missed her younger brother. He was. . .finishing up his last year, she thought. It was pressure on him that he not be the one to have them expelled as the next generation was creeping in. How old was the next generation? It varied, really. There were some cousins she was only ten years younger than, and they had some children of their own. And there were also younger siblings of her father, with children of a similar age to the generation technically below. She hoped it would be one of them, really, she did. Her brother was a dreamy boy, prone to idolizing others and enthusiasm. He wasn't naive, not really but going through school and knowing there was a high chance that you'd be the one to fulfill the curse of having your family banished from a school was a heavy thing. Raisa had avoided it, Raya had avoided it, Rosha was, and now it was Azar.

Logically, she knew it was more likely to be Amir or Yasmin. They were even younger than Azar, but partway through their studies, Bijan's children would likely start arriving. It was certainly hard-hearted to hope it was a child cousin-- Amir was only fifteen after all, Yasmin eleven-- who would either do or be framed for some horribly Dark deed, but Raisa really didn't see her parents getting into some great argument with the Headmaster, and the last Dark mage in their family had only been sixty years back. It was not too soon for that yet, and she didn't think Firuz was likely to cause great harm. It was the Shehzad way, to hope it would first not be you, then not your siblings who would cause the disgrace. Azar would have to worry about his children, but Rosha and Raya's would be safe, more often than not.

Not that Rosha seemed to want any children right now. She was content in her life, young and happy, not tied down by man or job. Nineteen only, and Raisa could not remember feeling that young. At nineteen, she'd already been in Bayt al-Hikma, taking the risk of a university rather than an apprenticeship, studying hard and doing her best to see if her efforts might be rewarded with the removal of her academic probation. Her life had been cluttered, much like this store. Raisa wandered down the aisle, fingers brushing what seemed solid and safe enough for a touch. She'd barely noticed the person before her when. . .

It felt as if the air was stolen from her lungs.

The person in front of her was heart-rending in their glory, with burnished white-gold hair and eyes like ice. Raisa could barely take in the other features of the face, drowning as she was. She had never known someone like this before, never seen someone like this. A distant part of her remembered vaguely reading about Veela, remember the witch in the records department, but none of this was important, not in front of the star-creature in front of her.

"Um." She'd managed to force a word out, to hear how inadequate she sounded and quite likely looked in front of the deity before her. Her brain was mush inside her skull, air was both tight inside her lungs and not there at all. How long had it been since she'd breathed? Could she even know how to in front of this Rudaba-like figure? Her mind was lost in a haze. "I. Moteassefam. Asif." Neither of those were right, she was making a fool of herself! She clamped onto one that perhaps might be English. "Sorry? Sorry!" Yes, that was it.

Her mind was on the task at hand. Or mostly so. It did have a tendency to wander...particularly when she was doing something that did not really interest her. Katya was more the type to want to go cliff diving or climb on a dragon's back than the type of girl to meander through shops. If she had been a muggle or even familiar with the concept, the MacFusty would be the type to do every bit of her shopping she could online.

But being brought up wixen, she had no concept of Amazon or the glorious opportunities of online shopping. So, here she was. Working her way through all matters of goods and merchandise trying to find unique and interesting gifts for her family. She encountered another shopper and gave them a friendly comment and a bright smile. The reaction was one that at first confused and then amused Katya.

The tongue spoken to her was not familiar at first. But she understood well being in a place where your native tongue was not the primary language spoken. Vila had been incredibly common in her house and Scottish Gaelic was her first language.
"No need to give any apology, I'm in your way. I don't even know what I'm looking for." A tinkle of laughter came bubbling up from her chest. "I'm always surprised when I come into The Raven's Nest, there is just so much here. It's a lot." Warmth and friendliness radiated off the veela--rolling off her just as the veela allure it. Katya really was the type to never meet a stranger. She didn't even think a thing of engaging the woman in the rambling conversation. It was just her friendly nature.
