Odessa had expected that she would just be taking quite the boring return to Hogwarts at the end of workday, as always. It was almost aggravating to have the freedom to be out of the castle for the internship, only to have to head back to the school and be bored to death by asinine classes and useless classmates. She had known that Jaxon was expected in to sign something—it had been at her desk nearly all day, but she hadn’t expected anything to come of that. Even though there were some ridiculous stereotypes that a girl got clingy after a shag, she could take a one-off for what it was. If he wanted a repeat, she wouldn’t be one to turn it down, but she wasn’t going to expect him to come in to sign something and then take her away or sweep her off her feet or something like that. Ridiculously, there were grown women that had those kinds of expectations from men and she just thought it sounded… dull. Unnecessary. If she talked to boys at Hogwarts, it was because it would be rude not to and her life was made up of all her interactions and how they made her look. But she didn’t date—no one interested her and she couldn’t force herself to be tortured by anyone’s presence for that long.

So if she didn’t date, then clearly she did not expect all that much from any situation that she happened to find herself in. Knowing that Jaxon was coming in today did not make her think that her day would necessarily go any more interestingly than most days did. She didn’t expect him to invite her over, but she wasn’t prepared to turn an offer like that one down. Yes, she should head back to Hogwarts. But was there really that big of a rush? As long as she didn’t stay out too late, no one would know that she hadn’t just been at the law firm. There wasn’t necessarily a set end time to her workday when she was out of the castle, and she could just explain that she had been working late if anyone happened to notice that she’d been gone longer than she normally was. In her mind, there was absolutely no harm in at least giving it a shot. Of course, his words made her flustered—incredibly unlike her; in fact, she couldn’t remember the last time that she’d been at a loss for words or anything even close to it. She always knew what to say.

Her response was a bit ridiculous. It was hard not to think of different connotations of the word ‘free,’ when she’d used it in that particular context. Jaxon probably wouldn’t think all that much of the slip; he hardly knew what her mother did for a living. She wasn’t even sure that he knew her last name. He didn’t need to. But it meant that her stumbling over that particular word was even more absurd of her, though he didn’t seem to be too put off by it. At his words, she only nodded, before realizing that she should probably actually say something. “Okay.” Odessa added finally, before picking up her bag from the table. If she was being smart and safe, she would go back to school and not risk getting into any trouble and letting everything she’d worked for start to unravel. But what was one little risk? The chances of getting caught were so low and even if she did, she was sure that there was a way to talk herself out of trouble. She thought it would most certainly be worth it.
