making memories of us

And I'm gonna love you like nobody loves you
Everybody had worried her about Ares when she had first started dating him, but she hadn’t needed them to. She had been in school at the same time as him. She had heard all the rumors. The fact that he couldn’t keep the same witch around for more than a month or so was well known that even she’d heard about it, and she was hardly someone that had kept up with much gossip. But she had decided that she might as well give it a shot. Going into the relationship without any expectations had been the best way, in her opinion. If she knew what she was getting into, and she didn’t expect for them to be together forever, then she was far less likely to get her heart broken. That was her logic anyway. But at this point, she thought that was easier said than done. Obviously, she had lasted longer than a month. They had lasted longer than a month and she loved him. She thought that was just about the last thing that she had been expecting when she had first started dating him. She had just known that she liked him, and she had wanted to see where it went. And she had been pleasantly surprised in that regard.

She knew that going to Christmas with his family was not a normal first date. She knew that holidays were normally a big deal to couples, and she had friends that still hadn’t gone to their boyfriend’s family holidays after months and months of dating. She thought that there were plenty of dating rules when it came to that sort of thing. There was a set amount of time that most people deemed to be best when it came to bringing boyfriends or girlfriends to Christmas dinner. But he had invited her to his anyway, just because she had let it slip that she was going to be alone for Christmas. It wasn’t as if she had thought that it was a particularly big deal. She’d figured that she would try to order in some food if anything was open, and then she’d spend most of the night reading--maybe in a bubble bath. That had seemed like a good way to spend the holiday. It would have been relaxing and quiet, but that would have been fine with her. She was never someone that needed all that many people around her to be happy.

Of course, she’d much rather be with her family, but they couldn’t get back in time and they didn’t want her coming to them this year. The area that they were in was not safe enough for her to visit them. Since they let her come to several places in the past, she didn’t argue when there was somewhere that they didn’t want her to be. But apparently, in Ares’ mind, spending Christmas alone had not been an option and so that had been their first date. Her, and him… and his cousin, and aunt. But she’d had fun. A lot of it, actually, enough that she hadn’t thought twice about accepting the offer to go on a second date. She had been cautious, but she saw no reason not to give it a try. She felt like heartbreak was always worth the experience--it was devastating and hard, but it didn’t make the journey before it any less worth it. If she fell in love with Ares and got her heart broken, then she thought that being in love with him would make it all worth it anyway. For however long it lasted.

So far, it had lasted. She couldn’t see it ending anytime soon. She didn’t know what the future held or anything like that. Issa just knew that she loved him, and that they didn’t have any major fights or conflicting beliefs or anything that would tear them apart. She wasn’t going to cheat, she didn’t think that he was going to cheat, and they were happy. Issa just couldn’t imagine that that would change anytime soon. Or ever. She didn’t want to get ahead of herself or anything, but she just really thought that they might be able to pull off the whole ‘forever’ thing. “Yes, they’re up there. Choosing to poke and prod dead bodies for a living is definitely questionable.” But someone had to do it, she supposed. Otherwise mysterious deaths would remain mysterious and no one would know what happened in some cases. Still, she couldn’t imagine doing something like that for a living. She didn’t think any amount of money would be enough to talk her into it. At Ares’ words, she sighed and shook her head at him. “Fine. Where do you want your second chance dinner from?” Issa didn’t know what could possibly be better than the pizza place that had the good crust and the delicious garlic bread but he might just think it was better to get food from the closer pizza shop.

Making Memories

Of Us

Ares had never been the settling down type. He had never been the type to care all that much about who he was dating, or how long he planned on keeping her around. And then Issa had shown up. She had shown up on his radar, and he thought that she was someone that he wanted to be around. If only because she was pretty, and he liked pretty girls. But then he had actually met her, and there was a lot more to Issadora Fairbanks than he had expected. She had been a conquest, at first, like they all were. He wasn’t even doing it intentionally. They just never lasted all that long before he got bored with them, and decided that that was it, and eh was moving on. There was no moving on from her though. It hadn’t happened like that. She had been around more and more, and he thought that he liked having her around. And then things had changed. Things had changed to the point where he didn’t think about her even considering not being here. Because she was supposed to be here. This was their life. Their flat. Their cat.

He still wasn’t sure what had made him say yes to the cat. It had to be the big, sad, puppy dog eyes that he had been given when she was holding it. Something. Something that made him agree to let the cat in their house. Ares wasn’t sure that he had been, or was ever going to be, a cat person. He had seen enough of them dissected and cut to pieces growing up with Attie that the appeal just wasn’t there. Something like that seemed to turn him off of whatever it was that people loved about cats. You could only see the gore so many times before that became all you saw when you looked at them. Those were thoughts that he tried to keep from his girlfriend as much as possible though. He didn’t need to make it worse by telling her that every time that he looked at her cat, all he could see were the horrible things that his sister used to do to them. That would just cause problems that he didn’t really think that they needed to have. Things were not going to get any easier simply for the fact that he had told her that he wasn’t a cat person…

For as much as he knew that their lives weren’t traditional, or anything that either one of them had suspected, he thought that they made it work out. Yes, in the end, he knew that his family expected him to make the ‘right’ choice and marry whatever pureblood witch that they decided was appropriate. He knew that that was the only reason that his mother, and his sister, hadn’t made Issa’s life hell yet. They expected that one of these days Ares would come to his senses. But they were wrong. He didn’t have to come to his senses. He knew that he had found the girl that he was going to marry someday. It was just a matter of when, and where, and all of that. He had to buy a ring. He had to propose, and he knew that that was something that he would have to try and get past his uncle. Unfortunately, since his cousins didn’t have any children yet, he still had to ask for permission. He still had to make sure that his uncle was okay with it… And he wouldn’t be. He could tell you that right now.

There was no way that he was going to be, but Ares didn’t much care. He didn’t care if it booted him out of the line of whatever. He really didn’t think that he was ever going to have to worry about it. Josef was going to get married, have kids. Anička was already married. She and Andrew would have children eventually. Ares thought that the only one of those three that really stood a chance of messing it all up was Dominick. And he didn’t think that the elder two would let it get that far. “It’s creepy!” He didn’t care if she tried to dress it up or not, they were creepy people. And he knew that it was something that probably would have been right up his sister’s alley. But he still stood by his opinion. “Well, we could always get pizza from the closer shop, and swing by the ice cream parlor on the way back and grab a pint. Pizza and ice cream on the living room floor.” It seemed like a good enough dinner to him and saved him from having to go halfway across town. He would though, if she really wanted the other that badly, and he knew that she knew that too.

[attr="class","cbody"]Issa knew that she wasn’t the most reliable cook in the world. It wasn’t intentional or anything. She just had a habit of getting a little… distracted while she was cooking. If there was anything that needed to simmer, or bake, then she thought that was a good time to pull a book down from one of the cabinets. What was she supposed to do while she waited? Wasn’t the saying ‘a watched pot never boils’?
[break][break]
But she wasn’t all that great at pulling herself free of a book in time to realize that whatever she had been cooking was now burning, and that had resulted in more than a few ruined dinners in her time. Really, she should know better than to grab a mystery of all things. If she’d picked a biography or something, there was a much better chance of her noticing that her sauce had been boiling over. Issa thought that she might need to change her organizational system as far as books in the kitchen went. The mysteries might just need to stay out of reach if she ever wanted to cook a successful meal in her life.
[break][break]
Luckily, Ares didn’t think that she was an absolute lost cause just because she burned more meals than she didn’t. There was a reason that they ordered a lot of takeout. By the time the meal was ruined, they were usually too hungry to actually cook something completely different. She was glad that he understood that she didn’t do it on purpose--but she thought there was a good chance he was going to hide her mysteries from her one of these days.
[break][break]
And oh, what a fight that would cause.
[break][break]
She had no problem trying to cook up something else, but when he suggested getting takeout somewhere, she figured it was probably a much better option. Then they wouldn’t have to wait another hour while they cooked something else, and it would probably be better than anything that she could cook anyway. Pizza sounded good, but pizza always sounded good, really. She had thought that there was a high probability that she could talk Ares into going to the pizza place that was much further away from their flat but had infinitely better crust than the parlor around the corner, but depending on how hungry he was, it could end up being a hard sell.
[break][break]
Since she was the one that ruined dinner, she probably should let him pick, but the good crust just sounded delicious right about now. But she knew that both places would work out just fine, and she was getting pretty hungry. And as good as the other crust sounded, he presented a pretty good counter to it. Humming in response, she considered the options. Ice cream did sound pretty good. It had been a miserably hot day and she thought that a pint of rocky road might hit the spot. “Okay, you’ve got yourself a deal, Wentzell,” she said with a nod, before opening the cabinet to put the book away. “But you’re getting your own pint. I’m not sharing my rocky road.” Issa added, as she headed toward the door.

follow the rainbow
Wherever the four winds blow
And there'll be a new day
Comin' your way

Deciding what to do with his future had never been a real concern for him. Ares had always thought that he would figure it out when he got around to it, and for the most part he had been right. He had gotten around to it. When the time had come, he had chosen what he was going to do, and he had done it. Economics had been an easy choice, and now that he was in his last year, things were easier. He thought that he had learned to balance it all, and no one except Hans was still mad about the bar. He was figuring it out, and that was all that mattered in the end. That they didn’t hate him for it.

Because his mum and his sister were the people that were important to him and he thought that they were going to get over it. They were going to get used to the fact that he was going to do things his own way, and that he didn’t care what it was that they wanted him to do. That he didn’t care about the traditions that they were so hung up on. They were going to be furious about Issa, and there was nothing that he could do about it. He knew that. He knew that they were going to be mad. But he thought that it would be okay. That they were going to get over it. Something had to give, after all. And he knew that it would be them.

Issa wasn’t going anywhere, and he thought that they had long established that fact. She didn’t have any family, and Ares had become her family. He loved her. He had always loved her. Well, maybe not always. But he had loved her for a while now, and he hadn’t thought that anyone was going to get him to say that. He hadn’t been that person. He had been the kind of guy with a reputation that kept girls like Issa Fairbanks away from him. He had been the kind of guy that didn’t care who he hurt in an effort to have the most notches in his bedpost when he was done.

Of course, he knew that she hadn’t bought that act as hook like and sinker as the rest of them had. But she was different, and he thought that they made up for each other’s shortcomings in some ways. He could get used to eating burnt food for the rest of his life, and she had to deal with his family. Perhaps she had gotten the worst end of that deal, but Ares thought that the food was bad when even the cat wouldn’t eat it. Of course, Issa loved the cat, and he had to deal with the hair that went everywhere… Luckily, he thought that it wouldn’t be in his food tonight, because he wasn’t even going to attempt to eat whatever she had scorched in that pan.

“That’s fine.” He laughed a little bit and waited for her to put the book that she was reading back in the cabinet, of all places. “You know that you’re just going to burn breakfast if you leave that there, right?"

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]When she put her mind to it, she really wasn’t all that bad of a cook. She wasn’t an expert or anything, but she definitely wasn’t awful at it. It was just difficult for her to stay focused on the actual cooking part. There were far too many recipes that required waiting—waiting for water to boil, for sauce to thicken, for something in the oven… and she wasn’t one to just wait around. Reading was the best way to past that time, and she always seemed to conveniently forget that she wasn’t all that great at stopping reading in time to see a sauce boiling over or smoke coming from the oven. It was a simple mistake, really.
[break][break]
If she didn’t have any distractions or a recipe didn’t require too much waiting, then it normally turned out all right. Then she didn’t have any reason to pull a book down from the cabinet or read at all. But tonight, she hadn’t been that lucky. The sauce needed to thicken and it was far too easy for her mind to get caught up in the Ministry she was reading.
[break][break]
Really, she knew that she was lucky that Ares didn’t get more frustrated by her constantly burning food. It was a good thing that he liked getting pizza and that he was good at rolling with the punches. He was usually the one that solved most of their food crises. Whether it was by stealing the spoon away from her and saving a sauce or deciding that they were going to get pizza instead, most of the time he was the one solving whatever cooking dilemma she found herself in.
[break][break]
Tonight, that meant pizza. And she was not complaining. Of course, she knew that she could have tried to make a better case for the place that had the good crust. Sure, it was far away—other side of town, really, but wasn’t it worth it for crust that was that good? If she had argued with him, she thought he likely would have given in and they would have ended up there too. But she hadn’t seen much of a reason to pick a fight about the place they got pizza from. She was hungry, and the place he’d suggested was right around the corner. They would be back here with their pizza and ice cream in the time it took to make it to the other place and put their order in. And tonight, that sounded much better. She didn’t want to wait around for the good pizza when they could get the other one quicker.
[break][break]
And he’d sold her by throwing in the ice cream, really. He had to know that she really couldn’t argue with him when that was brought up. Pizza and ice cream sounded good. Of course, the further parlor had really good garlic bread too, but that was beside the point. A pint of rocky road was all she needed to concede and let him have his way. “I will not. Besides, it’s your turn to make breakfast,” she reminded him, with a smile, before grabbing his hand and tugging him in the direction of the front door.

FOLLOW THE RAINBOW
WHEREVER THE FOUR WINDS BLOW
AND THERE'LL BE A NEW DAY
COMIN' YOUR WAY

Coming up with easy fixes was what he did. Ares was good with numbers, and most of the time, it was numbers that could fix things. Most of the time he thought that he could make it all work. But when it came to Issa and her cooking, he thought that he might just have to give up the ghost. Because there was never a time when coming home to the smell of something burnt was going to be appetizing. And he knew that she didn’t get distracted on purpose. It was just who she was. She got so absorbed in what she was reading it was like the whole story played out on her face.

Which was cute, when he was sitting around and watching her read. But it wasn’t quite as cute when they were throwing out more pans because there was no sense in trying to salvage the ones that she had scalded whatever dinner was supposed to be in. They weren’t hurting for money. He knew that. He was his father’s only child. And that meant that he had plenty to live on comfortably, forever, if he wanted to. He didn’t have to work. And then he had the bar. Which made enough to support itself and give them enough for this life that they had here.

Money was what made the world spin around, and yet he thought that there was something about all of it that would just, stop. One day it was all going to stop, and money was going to be worthless, and that was when the world would end. Not with the Second Coming, or whatever it was that his cousin believed. It wasn’t going to end. Because some invisible being said so. It was going to end when they stopped using money. When things stopped being worth everything that they were worth before. That was when they were going to be in trouble.

Tonight’s fix was simpler. Tonight’s fix was as easy as going around the corner to get some pizza. They were going to get pizza and ice cream, and dinner would be saved. They could worry about something else. Something trivial. Like who’s turn it was to make breakfast, and whether or not they had enough cat litter. Because Ares was sure that they were always going to be out of cat litter. It seemed like he spent more time running to the store for that than he did for anything. Which was pointless, really. They should have gotten a dog.

She loved that cat though, and he knew it. He was well aware of the fact that she loved the cat. And Ares knew that so long as the cat was alive, he was going to have to put up with the litter. And so long as they were both alive, he was going to be the one making breakfast if they wanted it to be edible. “I think it’s always my turn to make breakfast. When was the last time that you actually made breakfast, Iss?” He chuckled as she tugged him towards the door and away from the kitchen all together.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Ares Wentzell had not been what she was expecting, but she wouldn’t change where they had ended up for anything. Yes, she had known the type of person he was when she had started dating him—she knew that he got around and had slept with most of their class at Hogwarts. Or at least, most of the girls in their class wanted people to think that they had slept with him. But she was also just as certain that a good portion of them were telling the truth.
[break][break]
So, she hadn’t thought that they had ended up here. Issa had just decided to take it day by day and enjoy it for however long that it lasted. Maybe that was why it had worked out as well as it had. He was the type of man that women wanted to be the one to change. They wanted to be the one that had him settling down, that finally caught his attention for the long-term and she hadn’t gone into this relationship with that expectation.
[break][break]
In fact, quite the opposite. She hadn’t thought that she would hold his attention for all that long at all. It had nothing to do with a lack of confidence—she had plenty of that. It had everything to do with what she knew his type to be. She wasn’t flashy, or necessarily the center of attention every time that she went out. She preferred a night in reading to going out on the town most of the time, and she’d rather get a book for Valentine’s Day than jewelry. Though, like every girl, she did love getting flowers—but that was just beside the point. With what she knew about the types of women that Ares had been with in the past, she had given it a matter of weeks before some supermodel came along, and he lost interest.
[break][break]
Changing him had not been on her mind. Issa had just enjoyed being around him. He was charming, she felt good when she was with him, and that was all there was to it, really. It had just turned into more than that, somewhere along the way.
[break][break]
She couldn’t pinpoint exactly when that moment had been, but that was fine with her. All that mattered was where they were now. They were living together, they had a cat—who was honestly just adorable, in her opinion, and life was easy. Their biggest concerns usually ended up being where to eat that night, or the fact that she’d scalded another pan. Admittedly, she did feel bad when she ruined a pan, but she always was the one that bought new ones to make up for it.
[break][break]
Apart from that, everything was good. Sometimes it was still hard for her. Sometimes she still had bad days when she thought about her parents, but Ares was the one that made that easier on her. He helped her feel better when those days came, and he somehow always managed to know just how to do that—and that wasn’t an easy feat.
[break][break]
Tonight was a good night, though, except for the pan that was nearly ruined. Pizza and ice cream and spending the night with Ares (and the cat) was all that she was in the mood for. “I don’t know. When was the last time we had cereal?” She asked, glancing back at him with raised eyebrows. She was pretty good at pouring cereal into a bowl, and her cereal-milk ratio was nearly perfect. That definitely counted as breakfast, in her opinion.

FOLLOW THE RAINBOW
WHEREVER THE FOUR WINDS BLOW
AND THERE'LL BE A NEW DAY
COMIN' YOUR WAY

This was not the life that he had in any way pictured for himself, and he knew it. But Ares also knew that there was a time when he wouldn’t have given a second thought to Issadora Wentzell either. He knew that there was always going to be something that they were going to have to deal with. She was a halfblood, and he was a royal. Perhaps not a high ranking one. He wasn’t Josef, or anything, but she was still a halfblood, and his family was not going to like that. His mother and sister had already made that perfectly clear.

What he didn’t know was what they were going to do about it. They were going to just live their lives, in this flat. With their burnt dinners, and their cat. He was going to go to school, and she was going to go to work, and they were just going to be fine. He had the bar, and she had her books, and they were going to be fine. They were going to figure it out as they went along, because that was all that they needed to do right now. All that they needed was someone to tell them that it was going to be okay. And they could do that for one another.

He knew that she had expected a different life. And he thought that she had really expected one where her parents were alive. And one where she didn’t have to deal with everything that came from him being Ares Wentzell. But it didn’t work like that. It wasn’t that easy. And he thought that they could do without all of that. They could just relax, and be themselves, and nothing was going to happen. Nothing terrible was going to start happening just because they were together. He didn’t think that his strýc would even really care. Not once he got something else to worry about.

And Dominick was Dominick. Ares was sure that somewhere along the line he would give his otec something else to worry about. Ondřej could focus on being pissed at Dom for whatever it was that he did or didn’t do, and they could sail right on through. There would always be someone more important to worry about. He was the nephew of the král. He was not important enough to waste paying that much attention to. If they kept Issa way from him, they would be fine.

He could admit that he hadn’t meant to get this involved when he had started out. Issadora Fairbanks was someone that was so far out of Ares Wentzell’s radar that he hadn’t done more than glance over her in the halls when they had been in school together. She hadn’t been what he had been looking for in the least, and he thought that she knew that. But it was what made her different that made her interesting. She wasn’t trying to get his attention, and that alone had been enough of a challenge. Now he knew her, and he had gotten attached.

Attached enough that he was going to not worry about the burnt pot, and he was going to pretend that they hadn’t had take away every night this week. And they were going to go get pizza, and ice cream. And they were going to come back to this flat, where they had a cat, and he was going to smile, and have a good time. Because this had become his life, and he loved it. “Yesterday.” He answered her with a smirk as he pulled the door closed behind them. The last time that they had had cereal had been yesterday…
