You never know what's going happen
Graduating from school had presented Alois with a few challenges and with some opportunities. She had thought it would be better for her to get through the challenges and then tackled the opportunities as a way to reward herself. Thankfully her plan had worked and now she was the reserve keeper for the Holyhead Harpies. She knew there was a strong possibility that she would not get much play this season but that was fine, she would still be training with a professional team and that would be great practice for her. She was so thankful that they had taken her own. She was going to prove her worth to them no matter what it took. That in itself was a challenge but one that she was prepared to rise up to.

After being recruited onto a professional team, she knew she would not get play time that much given she was a reserve and she knew that things were not cheap. She could have visited a discount shop each time she needed household items, groceries or clothing but in the end, it all added up. She had taken the job at the stationery shop as a way of earning some supplementary income. It wasn’t a bad thing and it kept her busy. No one could say she was lazy.

She had not considered studying but she could visit that option down the track if she wished to pursue further education any time later. There were only so many years she could play Quidditch and while she was still in her prime she was going to focus on that. Her parents didn’t have any problem with that. In fact, she thought they were proud of her for getting her life sorted. She had a new flat and she had two jobs, it was more than some people her age were doing.

Alois did also ensure to have some fun when she could. She didn’t have to head to Scribbulus until this afternoon and she wanted to get some flying done. She wanted to experience flying out of Hogwarts. Sure she flew each time she would come home from school for holidays but this was different. She was now able to choose when she stopped flying and she didn’t have holiday assignments to complete or anything. The blonde witch arrived at the pitch and saw it was empty. She stood with her broom and simply took in everything.

life changes
make plans and you hear god laughing
Ireland knew that things were going to start settling down eventually. She hoped that they would anyway. Now that summer was underway and they were officially in season. The department didn't just handle quidditch, but right now that was their main focus. She knew that there was a good chance that they would focus on solely that for a couple of weeks before things got crazy again. She knew that there were going to be some things that they had to deal with when it came to the international teams coming into the country, and their own players leaving it. It was harder to do that than it was to just worry about European League. Their first match was against Norway, and that would be the 25h, but after that, if they, when they, won that one, they were going to have to play the winner of whomever else won. Italy and Argentina played that same day, and if she had to guess, the winner of that one would be Italy. But she wasn't going to count her hippogriffs before they hatched.

There was a long way to go before they got that far, and Ireland thought that there would be long hours of practice, and never seeing her boyfriend at all this summer. Something that she knew that she wasn't going to complain about, but she was going to miss him. When there was just practice, and the season wasn't in full swing, he had more free time, and that meant that there was more time to hang out, and do nothing. Because she liked hanging out and doing nothing. But that wasn't the case when the season was in full swing. Dating a professional athlete had never been a part of the plan, in fact, she had purposefully avoided dates with quidditch players for a long time, but Nick was different. And she thought that there was something about him that was just always going to be that much different. She had said that she loved him, after all, and he had said it back, and that was... Well, that was a big deal. She knew that it was.

Trying not to make a big deal out of it was what she had gone with, and that had worked, for the most part. She thought that it was something that she could deal with for the most part. No one was being extra about anything, and she thought that they were going to keep going the way that they were right now. She liked the way that they were right now, and she didn't want to screw it up. Ireland had meant it when she had said that she loved him, and she was in this. Whatever this was, whatever they had become, she was in this. Because they had started with no labels. There had never been any talk about what they were, and when they had become exclusive, or any of it. But she thought that it didn't take that talk. It had fallen together naturally, and in a way, that was almost better. When they hadn't talked about it, there was no need to worry about who was asking for what, or anybody being pushy. They had just happened.

They had happened, and now she was pretty sure that she was going to stay in love with him. He was her first great love. She had said it before, that she loved someone, but she hadn't meant it, not like she meant it with him. Ireland loved Nick, and she loved quidditch, and she was sure that there was no need to worry about what was going to come next. Things couldn't get lower than they had been in the last year. Her boyfriend had lost his mother, and she was sure that that was about as low as you could get. There wasn't much further down to go than that, and so they could rebuild, they had rebuilt, and she had been there, she had offered him a shoulder to lean on, someone to be silent with, someone that was just steady... She was steady, and he was steady for her. They matched, in that way. Coming out here wasn't about Nick though, it was about finding out whether they had made the improvements that they had said they were going to. Ireland had changed out of her Ministry clothes, and she had come with a broom over her shoulder, one of her mum's new test models... But she thought that it was a simple enough cover for why she was here, and she could check their facilities without looking too nosey. She was surprised to see that there was someone else standing on the pitch when she arrived, and she moved to stand a polite distance from the younger girl. "Hello..."

This was going to be a big step for Alois. The witch tried to constantly convince herself that she was ready for it but truthfully she was panicking on the inside. Surely she wouldn’t have been the only one in this position when they graduated school. Many people before her had earned themselves positions on league Quidditch teams when they finished school, right? She had just not met anyone. She briefly wondered where Caerus had ended up. SHe knew that and some point sooner rather than later she would find out where he was. Alois could see already how cocky he would be when they came face to face.

However by some miracle he had not taken up a position on a Quidditch team in the league, Alois would consider herself very shocked. He had just graduated with his house winning the house cup and sure he had not been the team captain for Ravenclaw but nevertheless, surely winning the house cup had driven to try out for a league team. Alois was unsure why she spent so much time thinking about Caerus. The two of the had really been at each other’s throats at some point and she knew she shouldn’t have given him that much attention. His Ego was already inflated as it was. Right now she could only dream of the Harpies winning over which team he had gained a spot on.

She would do her best to taunt him in return if that was the case. But the witch also knew it was important for her to practice good sportsmanship. She wouldn’t want any bad publicity to come her way or the way of the Harpies because one person’s actions.

Right now though, she was at the pitch to simply go flying. Surely there was nothing wrong with doing that. Did she need some kind of permit to fly around the pitch. She could have easily gone to the Quidditch pitch in the park in London but she wanted different scenery. When it came to what her actual career would be like as player, she would be playing in different pitches and under different conditions. They had definitely been spoilt when playing at the stadium at Hogwarts.

Alois had thought she was on her own until she heard a feminine voice speak behind her. She swallowed hard and smiled as she looked behind her and then turned properly to face the older witch. ”Ah, hello…..I just came to fly around. I wasn’t told I would need to seek the permission of everyone, please tell me I’m allowed to fly around?” She blurted out everything in quick succession and hoped that the older looking witch did’t think she was toO stupid.

Life

Changes

Ireland knew that England was having a good run of it. She knew that they had the potential to go all the way. The last game of the World Cup. She thought that they could make it into the finals if they tried hard enough. And from the way that her boyfriend talked, she thought that they had it in them. She wanted to believe that anyway. They were going to start against Norway on the 25th, and Ireland hoped that they got off on the right foot. Of course, Scotland was in the running too, and she thought that it would be amazing to see them both move on and keep rising through the rankings. She wanted to be around to see it. There would be a lot of hours of practice and everything between then and now though, and she knew that she was going to see Nick less and less, but that was the nature of the job. She understood that. And she wasn’t going to complain about it.

It wasn’t like she wasn’t busy too. The department handled more than just quidditch, obviously, but summers like this one, when they had the league to think about, and they had the World Cup. The two stacked up on one another meant that they were going to have to try and find some balance. So long as they were still in it, England or Scotland, she knew that they would be handling both. They were well prepared though. Beckett made sure of that. Ireland found it weird that in her mind it had shifted from Mr. Graves to Beckett. But he was Nick’s uncle. That made the whole thing a little more flexible when it came to names. So long as she called him Mr. Graves at work, Ireland figured that calling him Beckett in her head wasn’t going to hurt anyone. She had been to dinner at their house for Merlin’s sake. But either way, he had the whole thing under control.

Compared to his predecessors, Ireland thought that their department was a little less of a joke now. Their department because she read everything that he read. She was on top of things. She knew what was going on, and she wanted to succeed in that department. She had been a regular department employee for a few years when the position to be Beckett’s assistant had opened up and she had taken it. Perhaps that seemed like a lateral move, but in Ireland’s mind it had made sense. If she could get her face in the door, if she could make those same connections that he had made, know the same people, then she was already in. If she read all of the reports, and she knew how things worked, then she would be good at this. She would have already figured out how to do his job, even when it was still his job. Eventually she thought that she would move to a different part of the office. One that would be more appropriate for a witch that was older than her early twenties. But for now, she would learn.

She was rather proud of that strategy, and sometimes she wondered why people believed that Gryffindors weren’t clever enough to come up with schemes. Because she had a goal, and she had a plan, and she thought that that constituted a scheme. Coming out here though was not part of the scheme. Coming out here was thinking about flying when she knew that she couldn’t do it with Nick around. He was likely just to fly circles around her or something. It was also about checking on the improvements that had been ordered for this pitch. If she had the information that they were looking for, before the rest of the department even realized that they were looking for it, they were two steps ahead of the game. Ireland chuckled a little bit at the girl’s response to her greeting. “Oh no worries. You don’t have to ask to fly. I just came to look at the facilities themselves.” Taking a step closer to her she offered her hand along with her name, “Ireland Karev.”

Gaining a spot with a professional Quidditch team had really been a dream for Alois and she was glad that she was now realising that. Now she had to retain it and literally prove her worth. It was not going to be easy and there were likely to question her but she had a hard working ethic instilled in her and she was out to prove to the Harpies that she deserved to be there. Sure, she didn’t have as much experience as the others but that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to improve. After all, they had been in her position once too and one day (hopefully) she would be in their position. It was not going to be easy but then she hadn’t fooled herself into thinking that. That would not be right for her to do. She had come so far and it would not be right for her to get ahead of herself. She was out to prove to herself and her family that she could do it. She could be a successful Quidditch player. They had not doubted her but they perhaps wanted her to better think about her options. She knew that her family worried about her especially her parents but she knew that was what she wanted to do.

Some of her peers had thought she was naive but she was not. She may not have had as much experience in the real world but Alois was not shielded from the real world. She knew what was going on. Now that she was out of Hogwarts she could see for herself just how much the muggleborns were suffering. She had not really seen any since the Easter Break but even then she had seen the full extent of what they were going through because she had been focused on seeing her friends and family as well as sleeping and studying. But she could now see it most places she went and it broke her heart. But she sadly was in no position to do anything. She was not sure where she would even start for that matter.

But for the time being, she tried not to think about that. There were more important things for her to focus on. She had her new little flat to furnish. Merlin, she knew nothing about decorating. Whatever, she could learn would have to come from a magazine. Perhaps tomorrow she ought to pick up a copy of HOME magazine. She thought her mother had one but she also knew that her mother would try and talk her into buying certain things that Alois wasn’t sure she needed just yet. Like did even need a drinks set with six glasses? No, she needed just two glasses since it was just her on her own. Maybe if her brothers came over she could offer them a drink. But as she grew more and more accustomed and starting earning a salary she would be able to afford more.

The witch though was out here tonight to fly. She hadn’t planned on anyone coming out here. Rookie mistake, Alois she told herself. She had been surprised to see another person making her way out here. ”Oh, I’m Alois….Alois Taylor-Jones” she replied nervously as she shook the brunette’s hand. She wasn’t sure who Ireland was or what she did, maybe she was another player or a reporter. ”Uh….why are you looking at the facilities?” she asked looking around at the stand before looking to the other witch.

life changes
you never know what's gonna happen
make plans and you hear god laughing

She could be proud of her boyfriend, and not worry too much about being biased. She didn’t think that it was biased to be supportive of him. Nick had played for England for a while now, and she knew that he was one of the best. He was the starting keeper for England after all. He was good. She didn’t have to lie about that. Not that she was going to lie, but still. She knew that there were going to be times that she was going to see less of her boyfriend right now. That was something that she didn’t particularly like, but there were no two ways around it. That was his job, and just as she went to work every day to do hers, this was his. She would see him enough though, and they were going on vacation the beginning of next month. Well, as close to vacation as it got when his entire family was involved.

Ireland wasn’t going to complain though. A trip was a trip, and she liked traveling. They had gone to Iceland for her birthday, and she could admit that she had never expected that. Iceland? Who took someone to Iceland for their birthday? How was she supposed to top that? She hadn’t. She knew that. Ireland was well aware of the fact that Nick had won birthdays for the year. Because she had had a month to try and come up with something as equally wonderful for his, and she had failed. She had resorted to cheesy, and cliché, and gotten him a lot of little gifts to open at certain times of the day. It hadn’t been awful, by any means, but it hadn’t been Iceland. She still wasn’t sure that that was fair.

There was nothing exactly equal about that. She couldn’t afford to do that, and she didn’t know how. How had he done something like that, and kept it a surprise? Had he asked his uncle if she could have that time off of work? He had to have. Because Beckett hadn’t seemed surprised at all when she had owled him to ask him if he minded if she went away with Nick for the week. It had been wonderful. And she thought that they should do more of that. That they should make a point, in the off season, to go places, and see things. She wanted to do all kinds of amazing things with him. Have those experiences. She wanted to see the pyramids. And the Eiffel tower. She wanted to stand on the Great Wall of China. And see the lights of Vegas. She wanted to do all of that, and she thought that maybe they could. That maybe, just maybe, they could do all of that someday.

But someday was not today. Today she had a job to do, and the summer wasn’t exactly the time of year that they were going to get to travel. Not so long as Nick was playing quidditch, and for right now that was exactly what he was doing. She didn’t know if it would stick. If that was what he was going to want to do forever, but she thought that no matter what he wanted to do, she didn’t care. He could, well, probably not sit around the house all day, because he would drive himself insane, but she thought that he could do anything that he wanted to do. Personally, she thought that he’d make a pretty good announcer if he ever decided to retire from playing. But she knew that she was biased to thinking that she could listen to him narrate a match all day.

Ireland didn’t think that he was the behind a desk type. And some days she wasn’t either. That was what had her out here doing something that she knew perfectly well they could have delegated to anyone in the department. But she had volunteered to come and do it herself. She was Beckett’s personal assistant. She was watching, and learning, and making all of the connections that she thought that she was going to need, to one day take that job. She wanted to be in serious consideration for Beckett Graves’s position, should he ever decide to retire from it, and she thought that there was nothing really wrong with that. Pushing herself to learn every aspect of the industry. All the way down to the facilities that they were played in.

Smiling when the younger witch took her hand Ireland brushed a loose strand of hair out of her eyes before she answered the blonde. “We’ve been checking all of them for the newest updates. Seeing what needed done. I volunteered to check this one. Gets me out of the office.” Realizing after a moment that this girl wasn’t high enough on anyone’s chain of command to know who she was she shook her head, “Sorry. I’m the Head of the Magical Games and Sports Department’s assistant. I guess that makes all of this a little less weird. Not just some stranger nosing around.”

Taking on this new stage of her life was not going to be easy but the witch was prepared for it or at least she had told herself a number of times she was. Whether that was her fooling herself or whether she was actually believing that was to be seen. However, the young witch liked to think it was the latter. Throughout her time at Hogwarts, she had always been looked down upon because of her house, even if she herself believed there was nothing wrong with being in Hufflepuff but that was legacy that had been passed down from families and it was the stereotype that stuck to the badger house forever. She was sure that even the first years that started at the school in September would be subject to hearing that. She wished she could tell them not to believe it. However, Alois had no way of doing that. She had finished from there and was now going to be one of many newbies in the real world. She was very nervous about it all and she worried about it plenty but she knew what she wanted to do and she wanted to play Quidditch for a professional team.

She felt so lucky to have secured a spot on the Harpies team. She had been going through the other teams she could have joined but in the end, she had come back to the first team she had chosen and one of her favourites. She wanted to do right by them and to prove her worth to the team and that she was serious about it. She didn’t want to stuff up and fall or something. The Harpies had a reputation to prove and she was not going to be the one ruining it. She also didn’t want to embarrass them on the pitch. Alois somethings had bad dreams where she would have thought they had won the game only for her coach to come back to her later and advise that she had made some blunder and she was off the team.

Alois had her job at the stationery supplies shop but that would only get her so far. Her alternative was to study at Lufkin but she was at a loss as to what she wanted to study. She had had her favourite subjects at Hogwarts, but she had never seen herself pursuing either of them. No, she wanted to fly and to have her name in lights. Her brother would have his name up in the Theatre and she would have her name up at a Quidditch pitch. Her dream was to one da play in a World Cup and she was looking forward to seeing that through, even if it was years off from now.

Coming out to Wright Pitch, she was hoping to get some flying in. She had not really flown around other pitches other than the one at Hogwarts and the one at the park in London. But neither could be compared to a full-scale Quidditch stadium. But she was not alone here, an older girl was here explaining what she was doing here. Hearing that she was out inspecting the stadiums, she smiled. It made sense when Ireland went on to say she was from the ministry. It was not Alois’s favourite institution but she would cut someone from the Department of Games and Sports some slack. ”Oh! That’s cool, I’ve just been recruited as a reserve Chaser for the Holyhead Harpies! Do you enjoy working at the ministry? It must be nice to get away from your desk…” she finished by thinking out loud realising she didn’t want to sound like she was stupid when she spoke.

life changes
YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN
make plans and you hear god laughing

Ireland thought that it was ironic to be named after a country that she hadn’t even been born in. She had been born in Bulgaria. They had raised her there until well after Logan had been born. She had been nine when they had moved back to Ireland. Her parents had decided that they would be sending them to Hogwarts, and not Durmstrang, and so moving back to her father’s country was something that had had to happen. The only problem, Ireland was now beginning to realize, was that her mother had never really wanted to come. They could have gone to Durmstrang. They would have been just fine there. They had quidditch, and dragons in Bulgaria. She and Logan could have both ended up the exact same people. The difference was, she wouldn’t have been here. She wouldn’t have met Nick. She wouldn’t be working for Beckett. There were a lot of things in her life that would have been different, even if she would have turned out just the same.

Getting to know herself a little better was something that she had strove to do over the last year. When her parents had divorced, and things had finally come to a head, she had had to choose. There had been a moment when the only thing that she could do, was choose, and she had made her choice. She had supported her mother. And her own decision to choose where she wanted to be, and what she wanted to do with her life. She had chosen to make that choice to go back to Bulgaria. Ireland had made the choice to stay with Nick. They had both made choices that her father didn’t approve of. They had made choices that made all of this rather difficult to wrap her head around.

Ireland had to decide for herself what she had wanted to do then, and she had decided that she would take her mother’s name. That she would figure out a way to survive as Ireland Karev. And it hadn’t been too difficult. Yes, she missed her brother, and yes, she was sad that her father had made suck quick judgements about Nick, based solely on who his father was. But she couldn’t change those things. She couldn’t make her brother talk to her. She couldn’t make her father see that Nick was actually a good guy. That there was none of the Death Eater malice that her father swore was there, in him. If Death Eaters were supposed to be horrible people, Ireland wasn’t quite sure what she thought of the ones that she knew.

Because yes, Ares had done bad things. But he also loved his kids. And Ireland knew how hard he was trying with Nick and LJ. And Beckett was not like that at all. She didn’t think that he was a horrible person, and he had that mark on his arm. Her father had made some very rushed, very brash judgements about the people in her life, and she didn’t think that she was going to just take him back after that. She couldn’t. Not when he had plenty of things left to apologize for. She wasn’t taking him back without an apology. And she wouldn’t take his name back for anything. She would keep her mother’s.

The girl in front of her now wasn’t going to care about any of that though. About why Ireland did the things that she did, or if there was any real reasoning behind the choices that she had made that had led her to where she was in the Ministry. She had made her choices, and she had succeeded in her chosen path. “Oh? That’s wonderful.” She let that bit of information sink in for a moment, and then she nodded, “That must mean that you’re Alois Taylor-Jones, then, right?” She didn’t think that the Harpies had recruited more than one this season, and the name that she had just given was the one that she remembered. “I do like it. It’s a whole different world than the one you players live in.” The best part of being her though, was that being with Nick, meant that she got to live in both.

Alois knew that going from being a student at Hogwarts to living in the real world and being a Quidditch player wasn’t going to be an easy transition. For one, you had to fend for yourself. She had always had her parents there for her, not to mention her older brothers too. But no longer, it was up to her now. Every decision she made now she had to carefully consider. Well, there were some easy decisions she could get away with making on her own like what to order for dinner from the Leaky Cauldron or what cocktail she wanted on a night out at a bar but when she had thought about how she had to act out while she was at the bar was something she had be conscious of and to choose wisely who she spoke to. The blonde witch didn’t know if anyone would even take the trouble to watch her or keep track of her. She was still only a reserve but she did play for a very famous team and she didn’t want to do anything that would be hinder the reputation of the Harpies. She didn’t want to disappoint Demelza or any of the other players before she had even had a good chance to prove that they had made the right decision in recruiting her.

She wasn’t sure what she had expected to find out or even if she had expected to find anything. But she simply wanted to go flying. She could have gone flying around the pitch at the park in London but she wanted a little more solitude. But that didn’t mean she didn’t like running into the other girl here. After all, she was here just doing her job. Both of them had a good reason to be here.

Alois didn’t think she was trespassing or anything but then again, she was still new to the professional Quidditch world and was unsure if there was some kind of procedure she had to follow when wanting to fly at a pitch that wasn’t her home ground. There had been no one around when she had arrived to check with. She was doing more for the experience, the pitch was slightly different to the one she had loved flying around at Hogwarts. She assumed there were so kind of special charms in place on the grass to help it look so nice and the seating was better too. She supposed it had to be if people were paying money to come here for a match. They would expect good quality facilities.

She smiled at the other witch. She must have seen so pitches with her work, Alois thought to herself. She supposed that if she hadn’t made it onto the Harpies team then she could have taken up a an office job with the sport. It would have been near enough. She did have a job also but one at the stationery shop, it was not the most exciting of jobs but it was simple enough and it helped supplement her income from being a reserve player.

The blonde witch wasn’t sure how she ought to respond when she was questioned on her name. Well, of course being in the department that oversaw Quidditch, she would have a fair idea of all the new recruits each year to the different teams. ”That would be me” Alois nodded in reply. She had to get used to hearing her name out loud she supposed, after all, it would be announced before games. ”Yeah, I suppose it would be. Do you have any favourite teams in the league?”[/]b She asked wondering if she was even allowed to have favourites or not but at the end of the day she was another fan of the sport regardless of what her job was.

life changes
YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN
MAKE PLANS AND YOU HEAR GOD LAUGHING

Choice perpetuated change. And Ireland thought that she knew that better than a lot of people. She knew that her choices, that her parents’ choices, had all effected the person that she had become. She was the person that she was now, because of the things that they had done. Because they had moved to Ireland from Bulgaria. Because they had chosen to raise them here, and not there. Because they had divorced. And maybe she should have been over that by now, but she couldn’t get over the fact that her mother had left, and her father had written her off, and now she had no family at all. Well, she still had her mother, but Natalia was in Bulgaria, and Ireland was very much not moving to Bulgaria.

She liked it here too much. She liked being in England, she liked the person that she had become, and she loved the people that were a part of her life now. Finding her place hadn’t been all that difficult. It was just that there were plenty of times when it was a little lonely. Building a life for herself here was important to her though. She had goals, and she had dreams, and she wanted to make good on those. She wanted to be that person. She wanted to become something more. And she wanted her father’s approval. More than anything else, Ireland just wanted him to see that he had been wrong. That her choice wasn’t a bad one.

But she wasn’t going to get her hopes up. She had a feeling that her father was never going to relent on that. At least not until she had leverage to change his mind. And she thought she was years away from that. That wasn’t the type of thing that she wanted to do, just for leverage. She wanted to do it when they were ready for it. And they were nowhere near ready. But Ireland could admit to thinking about it. The house, and the yard, and the family. A husband, kids. Maybe a dog. She could see herself with that sort of life. Picture perfect. Two kids, and a white picket fence.

There was just so much that she wanted to do first. She wanted to climb a mountain. And she wanted to go to a quidditch match on every continent. She wanted to see the lights of Vegas, and she wanted to place a bet in Monte Carlo. There was so much to do before she settled down into something like that. She didn’t want to make the choice that her mother had, and jump into the house and the kids, and all of that, and not get a chance to be herself first. Though, she thought that she was already on better track then her mother had been at her age. She had everything that she wanted, and she was learning, her career was changing, and that was what she wanted.

She had started out just a nobody in the department, and now she was Beckett’s assistant. Now she could help him, and learn from him, and that was what she wanted. She wanted to learn from him, and eventually move up. To do something else in the department, and someday, she wanted to be a shoe in when he went to retire.

Smiling at the girl that she had come across, Ireland was glad that she had gotten the right girl. She found herself shaking her head with a laugh when she asked if she had a favorite team. “Once upon a time I did. Now I have to say that I have a favorite player.” It was easier that way, after all. And Nick would always be her favorite quidditch player.
