one way ticket
on a west bound train

She couldn't shake whatever it was that she had seen in the Forest at the beginning of the month, and Kate thought that there had to be more to this than she really knew. She wasn't going back out there without knowing what it was that she was looking for though. The Forbidden Forest was, after all, forbidden, for a reason. She figured that the best thing that she could do would be to research it. She had plenty of time, they didn't have any deadlines until next week, and she knew that Anička was more focused on her upcoming wedding than what was going on with the rest of the world right now. Kate didn't blame her, she was happy, happier than Kate had seen her in the twelve years that she had known her. That was something that she could be glad about. They weren't friends, the woman was her boss, but Kate thought that seeing her happy was a good thing. There was no telling what they had each been through in their lives, but there was something about Anička that just made Kate glad to work for her, and glad that Lord Nott made her happy.

It was a little petty, actually, for her to be jealous that the older woman was happy, but she knew that she was. She wanted to be happy, whatever that meant. It wasn't even that she was unhappy, because she wasn't, but she knew that she was just in a constant holding pattern. There was nothing about this that was changing, and Kate wasn't sure that she wanted things to really change. Just that she was going to be stuck here forever if she wasn't careful, and being careful was nothing that she had ever been good at. She was more rebel than she wanted to admit, and she knew that that was a part of the problem. She was too much of a free spirit to settle down the way that she was supposed to, and she thought that her father could have done something about it, but he didn't. He hadn't done anything, because she was the worst one of the lot. And she knew that. She was well aware of her mother's opinions on the subject, and Kate was well aware of who was making those kind of decisions in her life.

If Fitz wasn't careful Mum was going to marry him off before she worried about getting Kate married, and at this point, Kate thought that she was okay with that. If she were going to marry now, it would likely be to someone that she hated, and she didn't think that it was necessary to talk about just why she didn't want to marry. Why she had never married. She didn't think that she was good enough to be the one furthering anyone's line really. She knew that when and if she did, that was going to be expected of her. She was still young enough to bear children, after all. She was just glad that no one was pushing for anything like that. They didn't think that there was any reason to rush the fact that she hadn't married after this long. If anyone besides her mother was worried about it, she didn't think that they had said anything. Kate would much rather spend her time out in the forest, trying to place what she had seen. That was much more fun than being stuck in a house raising children. Something that she thought that she had been of the same opinion as her cousin about.

But that had changed too. Sloane had married again. For the second time. And this time she hadn't been taken away from her, but she was a mother now. Something that Kate had honestly never expected from the other witch. She had been married nearly twenty years before, and she had never had a child. But she had had one now... No one was what they were before, no one except her. Kate was still the same. She was still this red headed girl that was hell bent on chasing ghosts through the trees, and restoring the run down homes that she found the spirits in in the first place. Twisting a strand of her long hair around her finger, she made her way down the aisle way that was filled with books on spirits, and possession, and what to do to get rid of unwanted spirits. Looking for a volume that she had seen before, about loose spirits in Scotland. Kate knew that she could have been paying more attention to her surroundings, but she hadn't thought all that much of it until her handbag collided with the stack of books at the end of the aisle, and she nearly knocked into someone reaching out to catch them. "Salazar! I'm so sorry!" She didn't know if she had hit the other woman with her bag or not, but at this point it felt possible.

I'm gonna go out dancing in the pouring rain

And talk to someone I don't know
@kate Outfit
She wasn’t sure that she had made the right decision in coming here still. She had tried her best to make things work at home and it seemed like it was always something that kept her down. Her boss, her job, her family and the her father had died and she couldn’t stay, she knew it. This wasn’t goodbye this was a second chance. She would be back sooner or later, maybe. She didn’t know, she just knew that she needed a second chance, a new life, a time that was her own and she wasn’t really all that ready to handle people giving her pity because of how upset she still was. Learning to let the one person in her life who was the most important was hard. It was hard to change things when they were so far gone, but she was trying.

She had a place to live, she had not one, but two jobs now. She was doing just fine on her own and she new that it would be okay, she was going to make it, as long as she could keep her head up. That was what her father had told her time and time again, everything will be okay, even when you walk against the wind, as long as you keep your head up and follow your heart. So that was what she had done and now she was safe. She would be safe as long as she did this. She just needed… She needed parchment. Shit.

It had been in the box that she had been looking for but couldn’t find. Along with her favorite quill and books from her desk in the study. Her mother wouldn’t g in there. Her brothers wouldn’t either. She would have to go home for it most likely but she had no time to do so. So she had gone and looked in shops for a quill like the other she had liked and found nothing until someone suggested Flourish and Blotts. So there she went.

She had been looking through books for things for not only work but personal reading, getting lost in the stacks when someone almost hit her and she was hit with a handbag. ”Unf.” The breath left her lungs and she put a hand to her chest. ”It’s quite alright she said while rubbing the spot softly. ”Why in heaven’s name do they have so much stuff stacked around here?” Back home they never did such things for fear of lawsuit.

One Way

Ticket

She was trying to puzzle out just what it was that she had seen in the forest. Something. There had been something. But then she had gotten distracted by that man. Scamander. He had been a magizologist. She knew that. You couldn’t grow up in this world and not know that name. You couldn’t actually make it through Care of Magical Creatures, not that Kate had taken that class, but the point stood, without encountering the name Scamander. It was pretty synonymous with creatures at this point, and Kate thought that there was something to be said for that. She thought that that was the type of legacy that she would have given anything to leave. She wanted people to hear her name and think of the work that she had done with the ghosts, and the spirits. She wanted people to look at her and see that. To think of those things. Because she was a Yaxley.

Yaxley was a name that people knew too. It was a name that they knew for other reasons. Reasons that Kate knew that her brother, and her uncle still believed in. Reasons that had them where they were in the Ministry. But Kate… Kate wasn’t in the Ministry anymore. And it didn’t have anything to do with Andromeda taking over. She truly liked the woman. But there was more to it than that. Kate didn’t want to have to deal with those things. She didn’t want to have to deal with any of it, but it was a cross that she had to bear. She had to bear all of it, because she was a Yaxley, and that was okay. But she wanted to be more. She wanted to strive for more. It was just a matter of figuring out how to do that. How to be that…

There wasn’t a whole lot that she could do, but she thought that if she was going to be confident in herself, she had to stop taking her mother’s opinions as gold. It was time to grow up. It was time to face things for herself. And that was complicated. It was messy. But it was something that she knew that she was going to have to do. Sloane getting married, and having a baby… It took some of the heat off of her. Griffith and Davina had had a baby. Everyone was growing up, settling down. Fitz had joined the Ministry for goodness sake! Kate didn’t think that there was anything predictable about the lives that they were living, but they were living them, and that was just how it had to be. That was just the way that their lives worked sometimes. No one saw everything coming, but in her case, Kate didn’t think that she had expected anything. There was nothing too expect. She didn’t fit the mold.

She never had. She had always been a little too wild. A little too headstrong. She wasn’t going to be the one that anyone chose for their son. She wasn’t going to be the one that anyone looked to for anything positive. She didn’t think that anyone would ever see her that way. Not the way that they had seen Sloane. Not the way that they had seen Davina. She wasn’t conventional. She wasn’t even conventionally pretty. She just… Was. Getting lost in Flourish and Blotts helped. It took her mind off of everything at least. And she liked getting lost in the smell of books. New books. Not old books like a library, but the crisp, sharp smell of new books. “It’s always been this way I’m afraid. Something about the clutter makes it… Well… Flourish and Blotts.” If it wasn’t cluttered in here Kate didn’t know that anyone would actually be able to find anything at all. She held her hand out to the other woman in greeting, "I'm Kate."
