general appearance
Standing at 5'3", Mac isn't exactly towering over anyone with her short stature. Sometimes, she likes to pop on a pair of dramatic heels that kick her up to 5'6", but that's only when she's feeling sassy. Mac would be gorgeous if it wasn’t for the fact that she’s scowling all. the. time. She tends to hide her emotions behind a carefully laid brick wall and doesn't often show anything other than a very small smile (if, and only if, she's amused by something Rob's said). She prefers to wear suits as opposed to anything frilly or even remotely dress-like. She prefers little to no make-up, as she says that it takes away from her "terrifying countenance." In contrast, Mac has a sing-songy voice and those who know her by her Chinese name, Ming-Yue, might remember a famous Chinese singer and pianist of the same name.

skills
MUSICALLY INCLINED: Ming-Yue was a pop star long before she was Mac Zhao. Growing up, Mac had big dreams of becoming a mathematician, astrologer, and most importantly a world-renowned pianist and singer. She achieved at least two of those goals, though the world has mostly forgotten about Chinese super-star Ming-Yue.

FINANCE + BUDGETING: Her clients usually put her in charge of allocating funds and setting up budgets for upcoming tours and trips. Mac is incredibly good at balancing checkbooks and often handles all the major purchases of her bands and solo artists. She consults with investment specialists to ensure that her clients' investments are returning the highest percentage dividends.

CONTRACT DRAFTING: Mac has always had a knack for contracts. She's good at eliminating loopholes and getting her clients exactly what they want...and need. After all, she didn't spent six years in the pop music business and come out empty handed. She knows how to handle herself around lawyers and other managers and often comes out on top.

PUNCTUALITY + TIME MANAGEMENT: Mac is always on time. On her right wrist, she wears a watch that was a gift for her 40th birthday. It rarely ever leaves her sight. She also has an uncanny ability to know what time it is, even without the clock. Her internal clock is unreal. She's good at schedule-keeping and making sure that she (and her clients) are where they need to be and when.

STRATEGIC PLANNING: Most of Mac's clients have gone on to aspire to greatness. She's all about putting them in contact with the right people and encouraging them to reach to new heights. She'll also annoy the hell out of them, but that's besides the point. Mac is an incredible manager and doesn't take no for an answer when it's in her client's best interest.

PERSUASION: See it her way, why don't you? Although Mac can be a hard ass, she knows her facts and she knows how to present them in a way that sounds appealing to all parties involved. Sure, sometimes she needs to fudge the facts a little...but generally speaking, what she says is the truth. And she makes good on that truth.
weaknesses
WORKAHOLIC: Mac can't say no to her clients, which often ends in her staying up until all hours of the morning working on contracts or setting up interviews across the globe. She's relentless, dedicated, and one hell of a manager...which doesn't necessarily sound like a weakness until you realize how out of touch with her own life she is. She can't even remember the last time she spoke with her daughter...

BLUNT: With the inability to sugar-coat anything that she says ever, Mac can come off as harsh to those who don't know her very well (and I guess, to those who do, too). She will always tell people how she feels and why, in the most unfeeling way possible. In Mac's eyes, emotions just get in the way.

EASILY ANNOYED: If she tells you once, Mac isn't likely to tell you again. She doesn't like repeating herself, or being ignored. Do any of these things and she's likely to cop an attitude with you, even if you are one of her favorite people in the world ("Robert Bright, this directly refers to you, for the record. I'm nothing if not transparent with my feelings.")

HER PAST: It seems like lifetimes ago, but Mac was once a celebrity in Japan. Right out of college, she hit it big as a pop-star and singing sensation. After she tried to get out of the limelight, her popularity followed her for a few years, making it difficult to function in society. Mac attributes this to why she is so secretive and tight-lipped about her personal life these days.

CONTROL-FREAK: Mac knows what is and isn't good for business, after all, that's what she went to school for, isn't it? With a solid business plan in her head for each of her clients, she's not afraid to steer their career in a different direction if she thinks the choices they've made thus far are...not all that great.

HER CLIENTS: At the end of the day, her clients are more family than her real family is. She trusts them better than most and she's more likely to open up to them about her true feelings. She particularly dotes on Robert Bright and considers him one of her dearest friends (but she swears to Merlin, if anyone tells him that, she'll ring their neck).
positive traits
ALERT: Mac stays up to date on all Wizarding Music Industry news. Keeping herself up to date, she's able to make snap decisions about partnerships and interviews. She's also hyper-aware of her client's needs, often grabbing them a coffee before they even realize that they've been up for sixteen hours and desperately need it.

BRILLIANT: With Mahoutokoro Golden Robes, a triple major under her belt, and a plethora of experience working in the music industry, Mac is considered one of the great minds in terms of managers. She's quick on her feet, ready to work out beneficial deals for her clients, and cunning beyond belief.

CONFIDENT: Mac has been doing this for years. Straight out of college, she hit it off big as a pop star in Asia. Since her retirement six years later, she's been managing pop and rock singers with an incredible success rate. She knows she's good at what she does, which is why she's insistent that her clients take her advice. She can make them famous(er), if they just listen to her.

DISCIPLINED: Growing up, Mac honed her ability to play the piano with incredible precision. Constant practicing and learning created a woman who is incredibly disciplined. Mac works in clean, organized lines and rarely strays from what she's said she'll do. She can stay focused in even the most chaotic environment.

LOYAL: Though she may come across as harsh and cold, Mac is loyal to her clients and their families. She would do anything for them -- do anything to help them achieve their goals. Yes, she'll push them, but she does it to help them reach their precipice. After all, isn't that why people hire a manager?

ORGANIZED: If it's dirty, she's going to clean it. A little bit of compulsory OCD affects Mac. She likes tidy workspaces and clean offices. In a way, this carries over into her personal life, as well. She tends to compartmentalize and "tuck away" personal feelings to make herself feel more organized.
negative traits
ABRUPT: Not afraid to cut you off to make her opinion heard, Mac knows what is best for her clients and she knows how to ensure that their careers take-off at rocket speed. Yes, she'll listen to you if you have a differing opinion, but don't really expect her to change hers.

CYNICAL: A part of Mackenzie has always believed that the music industry will suck you dry and take everything that you once loved from you. But maybe she's just still a little sour from her days as a singer in Japan and China. She works to protect her clients from the harsh reality of the world but sometimes comes across as incredibly cynical.

IMPATIENT: Mac tends to want things to happy on the turn of a hat. She doesn't like waiting to see action and can get rather annoyed with inaction. This applies to her family, clients, friends, and anyone else she encounters (including the extraordinarily slow coffee shop barista at the muggle Starbucks).

NEGLECTFUL: As much as she doesn't want to admit it, Mac was a terribly neglectful parent. Her daughter didn't see much of her when she was married to Christopher and sees even less of her now that they're divorced and her ex-husband has custody of their daughter. She tends to get caught up in work and finds it difficult to draw herself out of it.

STEELY: The mask that Mac wears is thick and she very rarely lets anyone see into her personal life, or what she's feeling. Instead, she comes across as cold and calculating, which often rubs people the wrong way (she means well, though).

VENOMOUS: Mess with her clients (Rob, especially) and Mac can be lethal (not in the literal sense, of course). She's incredibly protective over those that she works with and will do anything to ensure that they are well taken care of. She doesn't take well to slanderous words or feeling like her clients are being taken advantage of.
hobbies/interests
Sudoku puzzles + crosswords. Annoying Robert Bright (her favorite client). Managing budgets + creating investment plans. Playing the piano. Singing ("I don't do this anymore, thank you very much. I wouldn't be caught dead even in the shower."). Organizing her office (and others' spaces) according to the principles of Feng shui. Drinking enough coffee for at least six people each day. Staying up late to work through business plans and contracts. Scheduling interviews for her clients. Staying out of the limelight. Mac likes listening to music, particularly classical piano (however, she's been caught jamming out to WSII albums on occasion). Mac collects coins from every country she visits and puts them into a little booklet. Cardio kickboxing (helps her get out all those aggressive feelings). Jigsaw puzzles. Studying foreign languages. Red wine. She enjoys annoying Rob.

character history
"I don't have time for this right now. Honestly, do you people have all day to write these things? Hold on I *picks up cell* Rob? Yes. *pause* Yes, you have to do the interview with Witch Weekly. H-hold on for a moment. *covers the phone's speaker and looks directly at you* Don't you have work to be doing? Interviews to schedule? Go on."

Mac's obviously not big on telling her story, so I'll just do it for her.

Born in China, Ming-Yue Zhao was the last of three children that Mao-Rui and Liang had. Shortly after her birth, her mother had a hysterectomy due to complications.

Growing up in a magical home, the Zhao's stressed the importance of learning how to yield magic, educating their children long before age seven on theoretical magic and theory. Her parents encouraged their children to each pick up an instrument: Guang-Rui the Pipa, Wei the Dizi, and Ming-Yue the Piano (they were great for a trio during holiday parties).

Mac could have never imagined what strange and wonderful things were waiting for her outside her parents' home. When she, the youngest, was shipped off to Mahoutokoro for day school at age seven, she road to and from school on the back of giant storm petrels, along with the other students in her year. (Barely twenty of them, the number thinned as the years went by. Students couldn't handle the intense academic rigor of Mahoutokoro and often dropped out to transfer to another, less prestigious school.)

From the moment she stepped foot inside the beautiful jade castle, Mac knew that she wanted to be a Golden Robe. Those that had excelled in academics had turned their robes from a light pink -- as hers was that first year -- into a brilliant, shiny gold.

Ming-Yue learned fluent Japanese over the next eleven years, training herself along with her new friends and classmates. She excelled in Transfiguration, Astrology, History of Magic, and of course, Music. By her sixth and next to last year at Mahoutokoro, her robes were a bright and shining color of gold, indicative of her dedication to her studies. There was little time for mischief as the next year, she was elected Head Girl.

After her graduation, Ming-Yue enrolled in the University of Ishikawa, a magical college located in Kyoto, Japan. The triple major program that she chose (business, music, and finance) was extraordinary daunting and often left her feeling breathless. She was discovered during a talent show her final year of school and offered a contract with a talent management company in Japan.

For six years after that, she was a pop sensation. Ming-Yue sold out concerts across Asia and became a sensation. She liked it at first, the fame, then notoriety...but as time continued, she felt that something was missing. She couldn't be herself. There was too much limelight. Every move was watched...every kiss scrutinized. Everyone lamented when she finally retired -- but Ming-Yue knew it was time for her career to take a different turn. She moved to England shortly thereafter, working at Lufkin University for a few years teaching Business (thankfully, her fame hadn't really spread to England, save for a few die-hard fans). She took an Anglicized name: Mackenzie, though she much preferred to be called Mac.

It was there that she met Christopher Poole, an attorney that would often speak to her business students regarding intellectual property law, etc. They married and in 2004, they had a daughter - Maya (she was an accident). Mac was so absorbed in her career (after all, at this point, she was managing the likes of Celestina Warbeck and Gideon Crumb) that it became obvious she wasn't fit to be a mother. Though Christopher and Mac tried to work it out, it became obvious that Mac had little time for family and they divorced shortly after Maya turned three.

Mac retired from teaching a few years after that, choosing instead to focus on her clients including Herman Wintringham. After the retirement of nearly everyone on her roster, she chose to pick up one more client just last year: Robert Bright.

Now, she considers him more family than anyone she's ever had. Mac's determined to make his career soar...but at what cost?

family history
Huang Mao-Rui grew up in Shenzhen, China. The daughter of a lawyer and a Healer, Mao-Rui grew up in Muggle society. At least until she got a letter inviting her to Mahoutokoro. An ancient school full of history and intrigue, she was excited to explore the world from a different perspective. Mao-Rui was sorted into 風 (Fū, Wind). She excelled, reaching high marks her final year and ascending to her own Golden Robe. Falling in love with Japanese wizarding culture, she took a job as the Mahoutokoro Head Librarian following her graduation.

Zhao Liang, a year younger, grew up in Wizarding society. His mother and father worked for the Chinese Wizarding Government as Magiczoologists researching creatures in the Shanghai Mountain Mixed Forest. He came to Mahoutokoro with a knowledge of magic and he too excelled. Sorted into 火 (Ka, Fire), he had a fire-like passion for learning, especially medicinal magic.

Huang Mao-Rui and Zhao Liang met during Mao-Rui's first year of teaching at Mahoutokoro. As the Head Librarian, she was often asked to help the rambunctious seventh-year find books on magical creatures and diseases. After Liang graduated, he sought Mao-Rui out and asked her on a real date -- after all, it was fine now that he was no longer in school.

He entered a Creature Healer-in-Training program shortly thereafter and they continued to date through the three-year program. When he graduated, his first order of business was to ask his favorite librarian to marry him.

Later in life, they had three children: Guang-Rui, Wei, and Ming-Yue.

Now retired, they live in Kyoto, Japan, where they happily tend to their garden and enjoy quiet meals together.
