general appearance
With 5'7'' Ruth is of about average height and rather slim. She's got medium-length, thin blond hair and blue, somewhat cat-like eyes and unless she smiles, a rather cold and strict expression and there's a bitter trait around her mouth.

university
Lufkin; Oxford / Athens
university major(s)
Archeology, Spell Invention (she took these mostly because they allowed her to learn languages - in the core subjects she wasn't very good); Classics (the ones in which she graduated. She took several other language courses in Indo-European Studies, Modern Greek etc., she did her doctorate in this subject at the magical university of Athens) / Education
years attended
1994-2000 (because see above) / 2008-2012

skills
Languages, lots and lots of languages - and she says there's nothing else to her. But she's also very organized and really eager to share her knowledge, so she's actually pretty good at teaching. Ancient history (as a by-product).
weaknesses
Her husband, the fact that she never got pregnant that she thinks about far too often, uncompromising, easily disgusted (her father was extremely unhygienic, that still traumatizes her), can't cook (the one time she tried for Alexis, he looked at the end product with such horror that she never cooked again)
positive traits
ambitious, studious, dedicated, strict (she says that's positive in a teacher)
negative traits
Self-centered; doesn't really care about anything apart from languages, i.e. a splendid representative of a déformation professionnelle; tends to look down on those she considers uncultured (mostly those who only know modern languages), strict (some students might say that's negative in a teacher), she really doesn't like her father and hasn't been at her parents' house for years
hobbies/interests
Languages (she's a complete nerd, so everything else is completely secondary), spending time with her husband (he's very much into languages too, so she can combine this with her main interest - it's also the main reason why they love each other), decorating, dancing
accomplishments
She published several papers on languages. Her doctorate (The Reception of Ovid's Works in the Magical Community of Tomis in the First Century AD) was published as a book.

character history
Ruth was born to two persons who should never have married one another. James Sharp was a shrewd man, who worked in all kind of jobs and made money in all kind of dubious ways, never caring to think about what might be morally right or to do anything else with his life. Ruth never find out why or how her mother ended up marrying him as she was the daughter of the then History teacher and the librarian of Lufkin, someone who was used to a very cultured surrounding, who liked reading, educating herself, being around people who had interesting subjects to talk about. Instead, she was during all of Ruth's youth cleaning or sitting in the kitchen preparing dinner or with the little money her husband gave her and reminding her daughter over and over again to never marry before she had a proper education.

So she went to Hogwarts, decided to be a good student to ensure her mother that she was following her advice. Yet, despite how hard she tried, she never was more than mediocre until she chose Ancient Runes as an Elective in her third year. There it was. A subject where she excelled without even trying. She started reading all the library books that had something to do with languages and so she made it through her years at school, doing more or less okay in all her subjects and writing Os in Runes with ease.

Once she had her NEWTs, she wanted to go to university and finally only doing languages. To her disappointment, no magical university in Britain offered language courses though apart from English and that didn't interest her much. So she took two subjects where languages were at least part of the curriculum and suffered through the rest of the courses, simultaneously inscribing herself at Oxford without telling her father, who couldn't stand Muggles and would have much preferred she'd have a job where she'd earn money because he wasn't wasting any on her education so that she ended up with all sorts of odd jobs.

Despite being side-tracked by all sorts of languages, in 2000 she was about to finish her study at university when it suddenly dawned on her that she had no idea what kind of job she wanted to work in afterwards. So she was glad when a professor offered her to go with him and his team to Ephesos for excavations. On her way there, she stopped in Athens and learnt that the Athens university did offer Classics as a study subject. She applied for a job so that she could write her doctorate there and to her own surprise and utmost joy got accepted.

There she met her husband, who was doing his PhD in Indo-European Studies, and they married in 2004, both continuing to work and teach at university. They were happy, apart from the fact that they never got a child. They made all sorts of tests at the hospital, but nothing could be found. With time, Ruth grew almost bitter that she would never be a mother. But then she heard that her old school was introducing a new subject, languages! She had to apply. It would be working with children. Not as good as having one of her own, but still. Teaching children and not the young adults at university. After all these years abroad, it would be good to return to the place where she had spent so many of her teenage years.

family history
The Sharp family was always one that lived on the verge of legality - or rather illegality, and James was far from being an exception. Indeed, he was if anything the perfect specimen. He probably didn't do one day of honest work in his entire life, it's difficult to say because he never talked with his wife about how he spent his days. In fact, he didn't talk much to her anyway, and if he did, only to reprimand her that she was spending too much money. Like most of his family, he had been sorted into Slytherin, not because he was especially ambitious but because he owned a certain sort of shrewdness that would have made him an even worse fit for any other house.

Emily on the other hand grew up as the well-protected daughter of two academics, for long never imagining that she could be doing other with her life than spending most of it at a university. But after the Ravenclaw finished Hogwarts with excellent marks and inscribed at Lufkin and did her studies, she one day got drunk in a pub and ended up taking a stranger home with her. The next morning and sober, she was more than glad to see him leave her flat. But James had decided that night that it would be comfortable to have a wife and that Emily would suit just as well as any other girl. So he made something of an effort and started wooing her. At first Emily ignored him, but with time she had to believe that he had to be seriously in love with her and began to pity him and pay him some attention. Therefore, one day they ended up drinking tea together and he proposed to her and she said yes. A few hours later she didn't know anymore why she had (too gullible to come to the logical conclusion that there had been a mild love potion in the tea), but she didn't have it in her heart to tell him that she had changed her mind. He couldn't be that bad, she kept assuring herself. She'd be able to change him. With time she was even able to talk herself in love with him, and so she didn't listen to her parents' reasonings but married him, hoping for years that he'd change, at least for his daughter once she was born. And so she waited in vain, putting all her effort into educating her daughter as she had been though she hadn't the ressources her parents had had.
