❝But no matter where it was,
I always stood out❞

@camilla .

    Everyone was sick and Emilia had so far been spared. Even MJ had sent word that he had that flu and that everyone should stay away from him. Not that Em would've gone to invade his privacy after he explicitly stated that he wanted nobody there, that was Esme's thing. Instead, she just sent him some food via owl and told him to write if he needed anything, especially if he got worse. Why the idiot didn't check himself into the hospital was beyond her. Still, she had made her peace with it and -so far- she hadn't gotten sick herself. It seemed improbable at best, really, but she really thought that she might get away without getting it. Maybe. She didn't want to lose her magic, even if she knew it wouldn't be the end of the world. It was part of who she was. Sure, she would figure out a way to live without it, but she didn't really want to. Even her boss was sick now, though she'd stopped coming to work a while ago. Em hadn't caught it and nobody at Mare Aloja was showing signs anymore, they were still functional. Hell, she thought she would be showing up to work even with one of those thousand degree fevers everyone kept talking about. What else was she supposed to do? Nap? She hadn't napped since kindergarten.
    She was avoiding everything and trying to get through life, even if it meant taking work home and getting it done there. Unless she had to meet a client, she made sure to stay at home and take all the necessary precautions. Fuck's sakes, she even had hand disinfectant in her purse right now. Not that she was wearing a bubblehead charm, that was a step too far, but she was seriously considering it. At least mum didn't seem to have gotten sick yet, that would've been horrible and- confusing. Her mother wouldn't bow before anything, let alone the flu. The universities had postponed the start of their academic years, though, even if Hogwarts hadn't disbanded. In a way, it was better that Hogwarts was still running, it kept most of the kids away from this whole ordeal. Safe and looked after elsewhere, though she knew that she would've been very worried and rather pissed if she'd been all the way in Scotland while her family got sick. Still, as an adult now, she could say that it was better this way. At least calling off the university classes would stop the further spreading of everything, since there wouldn't be such large congregations of people. If even one of them was sick, after all, they would all be. Not her, she'd graduated almost two years ago. The students and the professors. Mum.
    "Hey, want some coffee?" Em opened her mum's office door without knocking, she rarely ever did. Besides, it was her mother, she could go in whenever she wanted. Wasn't like she was with students anyhow. Right about this time in the afternoon she would be needing something strong to keep her mood temperate. Emilia was exactly the same in that matter. Besides, she'd wanted to see Camilla, she'd wanted to spend a bit of time with her. Em had always been so close to her mother, now that she had a bit of free time she would make use of it. So she went over to Camilla's desk, smiling, and set the coffee down before kissing her cheek in greeting. "How's work, ma?"

All I wanted was someone to love me too, But no matter where it was I always stood out

Camilla was worried. It was really hard not to be, with Chris and Keegan stuck at Pyxis now. This sickness had escalated far too quickly. From a measly early flu season to some traumatizing splinching events, Camilla was on edge now. Dean Powell had, understandably, cancelled classes at Bangor, and if that was happening then Camilla knew things were bad. She was very stubborn, in that respect, and Camilla had noticed that the other woman was sick. The fact that she was actually conceding defeat to the mysterious virus was a sign to Camilla that they should all be concerned. Her children were still fine, as far as she knew anyways. Although considering how fast this was spreading around, Camilla was advising them to take precautions. They would have to visit Chris and Keegan at some point, and Camilla was already worrying about the complications that that could bring. It was already scary enough as it was. The last thing she needed was her own children falling ill.

Herself she could handle. Avery would be tough, but also manageable. Seeing Emilia and MJ lose their magic and suffer through all of that, though? That was not something Camilla wanted to endure. Merlin forbid, she couldn't imagine what they would be enduring. No, this was something she would try to avoid at all costs. That being said, what could she do? Everyone was taking precautions like it was just a normal cold, but they didn't exactly know that. What cold stole magic, after all? Camilla was wary about how much she could actually do to protect her children from this. She would be careful and she would keep an eye on them, but a big part of her was bracing for impact. Things were looking bleak, and Camilla was nothing if not a realist. As much as she hated it, she had to prepare herself for the worst. Even if the worst was something that made her sick to her stomach just to imagine.

Either way, as much as classes were suspended, Camilla still found herself at Bangor most days. Her office at the university was just so much better when she was working on a strict schedule, and she rather liked the quick and easy access to the observatories. Still, Camilla knew it probably wasn't the brightest idea to be around the campus with everything going on, but... well, it was her life's work. She couldn't just leave it behind indefinitely and sit around waiting for things to happen. The world still turned, after all.

As the door to her office swung open, Camilla quickly looked up and a smile almost instantly appeared on her face. Anyone else would have been greeted with a glare and a prompt 'come back during office hours,' but for her children the door was always open. Emilia, her middle child. She was more intelligent and ambitious than Camilla could have ever hoped. She was a hard-worker, and Camilla had always seen plenty of herself in Emilia while she was growing up. "Coffee sounds lovely right about now," she admitted, closing the file in front of her and leaning back in her chair a bit. Camilla's smile grew a bit at the kiss from her daughter. "Oh, it's coming along. Mostly grading papers, unfortunately. How's your work?" she asked in return.

    Em had always wanted to be like their mother. Camille had a way of being that was strong, accomplished, and yet managed to have that personal gentility that allowed her to be a good mother. Hell, a great mother. Em didn't want kids yet, but that was still a mannerism that she wanted to keep when it came to her family. They were important to her, like her career was and her studies had been. At school, she'd always done her best while also making sure to keep her personal relationships alive and well. She had taken part of as many clubs as she could, led them, become a Prefect, become Head Girl, while all the while maintaining her marks on a perfect level. Why? Because that was a standard she put on herself. Classmates had always asked her if it was something her parents expected of her and she always told them no, she was free to do whatever she wanted with herself. Emilia wanted to be the best she could be. Her mother had set an example and she was free to follow it or not, she had made the choice to follow it. Ziggy hadn't, she'd chosen another career path for herself, and so had MJ. Em was proud of them for picking what they wanted to do, their family was built like that. On supporting each other no matter what.
    "Sounds like a nightmare." Em chuckled and leaned against the desk beside her mother. No, teaching would never be her strong suit. She already had patience issues explaining things to her friends, let alone to complete strangers. No, hopefully her lack of patience would disappear if she ever decided to have children. Her mother's job was admirable, really, since she taught undergrads and tutored apprentices and all that. Creating professionals that would go on to teach or research and all that. Just as her job before that had also been very impressive and socially responsible. That was how her mother was- how all Shacklebolts (and Lindquists) tried to be. "Work is fine. Got a few cases on my plate right now, but everything looks promising. I think there'll be a new campaign soon, which is interesting. Haven't had word as to what the campaign will be about specifically yet, but I'm looking forward to it."
    She smiled, taking a sip of her coffee and letting herself settle into the situation. That was important, to keep herself occupied. Continue like always, ignoring the fact that there was a virus taking away people's magic somewhere out there. Well- not ignoring, precautions needed to be taken, but the point was that she shouldn't go around letting it limit her. Emilia had a full life, a lot of work, friends and family, and she wasn't about to let something like this cow her into silence or submission. So here she was, spending time out of her carefully disinfected apartment, with her mother at the woman's office. At the university. Where people had probably wandered while sick- she didn't want to think too hard about it, was all. "How're you feeling, ma? All good?"

[attr="class","textboduni"]Camilla had always raised her children to be the best at what they did. She didn't think it mattered what they chose to do. The point was that they chose something and that they did it well. Esme had gone on an entirely different route from most Shacklebolts, but she had been extremely successful in it. She had always done well in her music classes and gotten to a point in her life where she was easily recognized. Em was intelligent beyond belief. She studied hard throughout law school and followed her passions in a way that let her make a difference. And then MJ, try as he might to blend into the background, had been doing well in journalism. Camilla knew he had a whole lifetime of achievements ahead of him. That was all she ever wanted for them--to do things that would bring them a sense of pride. To do what truly made them happy.

Most of all, though, she wanted them to be safe. Camilla cared for her family more than anyone could imagine. She had always felt a sense of loyalty to them. Not just her husband and children. She never hesitated to step up for Kings and Chris whenever they had needed it, when they had been younger. She would unwaveringly stand by any of her family and friends. That had been her drive as an Auror, too. A protective personality that could be relied on no matter what. It had made her a better Auror than most people assumed. Those that had known her in school knew that she was a fierce dueller... but combined with the often underestimated Hufflepuff loyalty, Camilla had done well as an Auror.

That had been another life, though. One she had had to leave behind after her injury, and as much as that had been her dream for so long, Camilla also knew that she couldn't return without falling into the same spiral as before. But she had taken a different route, and she had done well in that, too. That was the example she wanted to set, after all. At the time, it had likely been for her brothers. As time went on, it was for her children.

"Nightmare is a great word for some of these papers," Camilla replied, laughing lightly as she shook her head for a moment. She taught classes ranging from first to fourth years and got to see the best and the worst of all of them. Busy as always, Camilla thought, and that was good. Better to be busy with work than be busy with that virus going around. By some miracle, her and her children had been untouched--for now. She wasn't pessimistic about it. Just realistic. "Nothing you can't handle. I'm sure of it," Camilla replied reassuringly. She paused for a moment after her daughter's question, the expression on her face turning into a somewhat sadder smile. "I'm not sick, if that's what you're wondering. At least... not yet." She knew that Em could handle a dose of realism. Her daughter was always good at taking the truth as it was. "How about you, love? Anything out of the norm?"
