They'd had to take the Knight Bus in, because they were going actual food shopping, and Willa had thought to also do some for the kids. Her own help would would be lean, she knew-- with this illness, people flashed glitter less, and while it was easy to take from Muggles, easy to bring them to be sold, to trade them, they also had connections and technology she didn't quite know to trace and remove. Easier, safer to take from other mages, with gloves enchanted to ward off the curses, to flick at the weaker spots. Not to say she brought in a good chunk of their funding, because that would be dangerous if discovered, and Domum was not a cover for fenced goods, but a lot of the helpful amenities were her. They weren't funded enough, and that wasn't her fault for using her talents, after all.
Winnie had convinced to go shopping, and the grocery store was bright and dazzling, the colors almost blinding. She pinched her lips, comparing the prices. Why was buying in bulk always changed with sales? She snagged a box of pancake mix, dropping it in the cart.
"We're going to have to take the Bus back, remember." That night she'd tried running away-- the first time she'd been successful getting his wand for the first time-- had left her forever wary of the vehicle. Never mind that she would have been so anyway, but it was almost worse. At the time, she'd hoped they would crumply into a deadly crash, really. It seemed almost better to face that certainty and stop waiting for it. "I don't think all the bags would really hold up. Besides, what sorts of things do you even eat at bonfires? Still apple slices, or what-have-yous, those American mores. . ."
