Octavia could not have imagined herself here, in this place and in this particular moment. A few months ago, she would have thought she would still be stuck in Pyxis around this time. Still sad and bored and restless. And a few years ago, she would have thought she would be at Hogwarts at this time, going to the Halloween Ball with Murdina, most likely. But no, that wasn't what her life was at all. Octavia was home--not at Pyxis or Hogwarts, but at home. Back with her parents. Back with her other little brother. It wasn't what she would have liked for herself, but it also wasn't horrible. It was... good. Maybe not perfect, maybe some things could have been better, but it was still good. Octavia had the people she cared for back in her life, and for the first time in a long time, she felt safe. Like she could go about untouched. Tav had a newfound confidence in her--one that had been buried under the years of torture and bad luck. She was feeling more and more like herself, even if she couldn't be back at Hogwarts.
At least, though, Octavia was on track to finish her muggle schooling... and she was on track with her animagus spell. It felt so long ago now, the first day she had put the mandrake leaf in her mouth. The twenty-fourth of August--a major risk, because Tav knew things wouldn't go well if she just refused to talk in her classes, or if she mumbled in some strange way. But then they had bee shuffled out of Pyxis before anyone could say anything and it was almost if the pieces had just fallen into place. As if everything had been meant to be. Octavia had gotten to go home. The weather had taken a turn for the cold, enough for dew to form in her backyard, so she had set aside a little patch, protected it so she could use it for the potion. And then when a month was over and the full moon was in the sky... she finished it. Every day since then, Octavia had set up alarms to remind herself to say her incantation every sunrise and sunset. She had kept an eye on the weather reports, waiting for an electrical storm.
And there was supposed to be one tonight, of all nights. Octavia didn't know if the timing was perfect or horrific. Because tonight was the night that she was going to be meeting Cas' parents, and that was a bloody big deal. Being a muggleborn, Octavia knew her way around a muggle Halloween party. That part of it would be fine--but she was still feeling a little nervous. Things had been going so well with Cas. Perfectly, really, and Tav just wanted his parents to like her as much as she liked him.
There was also the fact of the lightning storm, though, and Octavia trying to figure out if she could somehow take her potion and complete her first animagus transformation... or if she would have to wait for another lightning storm--and only Merlin knew when that would happen.
Lightning hadn't hit yet, though, and even the report said it wasn't a one hundred percent thing--so Tav had resolved to enjoy the night and go along with things as they happened. This process... it was a timely one. And she had known that going into it. She had just arrived and pulled her coat off, and Cas had been there to greet her. Octavia looked up at Cas with a wide grin on her face. "Would it be really cheesy if I made a big bad wolf joke?" she asked playfully.
