[attr="class","cbody"]This was what he got for going out on a Monday night.
[break][break]
That was the lesson that he had taken from the events of the past twenty-four hours. He had decided to go out because he hadn’t had anything better to do. Caerus, admittedly, was still not taking having no magic all that well. Yes, University of Bangor had worked incredibly to come up with a curriculum and not toss magicless students out of their majors like Lufkin had, and that was fine. He technically didn’t need magic for astronomy anyway, so that was fine.
[break][break]
But he couldn’t fly anymore, and that was what was getting to him. The rest of the league season had been cancelled, and now he couldn’t even fly for fun. He didn’t know how he was supposed to get used to that. So, he had decided to go out the night before. No reason not to--apart from classes that he’d had today that he had ended up skipping.
[break][break]
Going out had ended up with him going home with some blonde who had still had magic. It meant that she could easily apparate them to her home and while it was at least in Bangor, it wasn’t exactly close by to his house. He had left her house as soon as possible and he had decided that there was little point in going home yet. That had ended up with him at this bloody bed and breakfast. Caerus had never actually been to one of these before, but when he had officially woken up this morning, his hangover had made the decision for him. He was skipping classes for the day and he wasn’t going to leave this bed until tomorrow.
[break][break]
He would just go home then. Staying here for one more night wasn’t going to do him any harm. In fact, it might be a nice break from his house. His parents weren’t exactly taking this epidemic all that well either. Getting out of there for a while was actually the best idea that he’d had in a while. Yes, this place was a little… calm for his tastes, but the place had a decent collection of books. It gave him time to relax and read, which was something that he hadn’t been able to do for a while.
[break][break]
All in all, he was calling this impromptu voyage away from said hookup and to this bed and breakfast a complete success. Caerus was unsure if anyone else was staying here, because it was just a random Tuesday in November, but that was fine by him. He’d spent most of the day reading in one of the sitting rooms and so far there hadn’t been any interruptions. He knew that forced mingling was a bit of a cliché in places like this but he just hadn’t had that problem yet, thankfully. As much of a people person as he was, sometimes it was nice to get away from everybody for a while.

hard love
Hold on tight a little longer
What don't kill ya, makes ya stronger

Buying a bed and breakfast was something that had been done to appease her mother. Of course, Malory loved her, and Ursula knew that. She had never grown up doubting her parents’ affections for her. But she wanted to be sure that she did something that they could at least talk about around their friends. They last pureblood Le Fay from the main line, and she had taken it upon herself to become a necromancer, of all things. That wasn’t exactly something that her mother could talk about with her friends at dinner parties.

And she knew that that was important to her mother. For everything that she was, Ursula did care about her parents. And she did care about the name, and the image, and all of that. If anyone actually asked, she told them that she was a potioneer. It was a much more respectable choice, and it was the truth. She was. When it came down to it though, right now, she was just glad that she wasn’t sick.

The boys were sick. Arthur and Merlin had both gotten sick. Rabastan had fallen ill. Her friends, her mentor. They were all without the thing that made them them. They were all without what made them special. And she didn’t have the answers. She didn’t have the means to procure them. If she thought that she could brew an antidote, she would try. She would have loved to get her hands on the bodies of anyone that had died from their symptoms. And she knew that getting her hands on the dead that were immune, as she seemed to be, was going to be even more challenging. People were more inclined to give their bodies for research purposes in an epidemic. But collecting the specimens herself was a bit harder.

There had been a muggle couple here tonight that she thought that she might just collect. Simply because it had been plenty long enough since she had tried to do anything on an actual body, and she had already established that they were childless. That no one knew that they had come here to Wales at all. And she thought that that sounded like the ideal scenario for a couple of heart attacks to take place. For the bodies to be staged, and then the coroners could always be persuaded.

Muggles were easy to manipulate to her will. It was the magical patrons of this place that she had to pay a little more attention to. And there always seemed to be a decent mix of both. That much hadn’t gone unnoticed by the witch since she had taken ownership. This place seemed to run itself, and she wasn’t going to involve herself in more day to day operations than necessary. But today she was running out of things to do, and so greeting her guests had seemed like an appropriate choice.

There was only the one, besides the old couple that had just checked in, and as far as she could tell, he had been minding his own business. Turning on a sickeningly sweet smile, she headed in that direction and she nodded to him in greeting, “I hope I’m not interrupting…” She very clearly was interrupting his reading, but she thought that it might have been worth it. Just this once.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]He didn’t really know why he had decided to stay here instead of just going home, but it had just made sense. He’d woken up at the random blonde’s house and he hadn’t wanted to still be there when she woke up. It was easier to just leave than it was to find the Floo place and get out of there that way. And it wasn’t too horrible outside, so it hadn’t been bad walking around. When he had made it here, he’d decided that he might as well take a little time away from home, and from… well, everything really.
[break][break]
Maybe it was just that it was depressing to be home. He thought that it might have something to do with that. His parents, Ophion… having no magic wasn’t boding well for any of them really. No one was in all that great of moods these days. It was getting easier, but it was still nice to just have a break. If that was spent in a slightly cliché bed and breakfast, fine. He could deal with that.
[break][break]
There was some studying that he could have been doing, really. With some of the term being cut off due to the epidemic, it felt like they were getting even more information being thrown at them now. Of course, this was also his first year of university, so maybe it was just always like that. A part of him wouldn’t be surprised.
[break][break]
But without magic, and without being able to fly, he had more than enough time to study and get all of his assignments done. He was more than prepared for all of his current classes, so there just wasn’t much studying that he even needed to get done. He would much rather read one of the many books that seemed to be in this place, and just relax for a little while.
[break][break]
Besides, it wasn’t like he had his schoolbooks on him anyway. He hadn’t exactly needed them when he had been out with that blonde, after all.
[break][break]
So, reading for fun was just about his only option in this place. But it was much better than the alternative, which was force mingling with anyone that happened to be staying here. There was probably tea time and bird watching and other nonsense that they had scheduled here. That was what he normally thought of when he thought of bed and breakfasts though, admittedly, it wasn’t a concept that he found himself thinking about all that often.
[break][break]
When he heard a voice, he thought that he was about to be dragged into some of that dreaded mingling. But when he looked up, he was pleasantly surprised to find a very attractive woman standing nearby. Older than him, sure—probably too old to flirt with successfully, but still. There were definitely worse people that could have walked into the room. “Not at all. I’ve read this before,” he said, with an easy grin, before closing the book and setting it down on the side table. “Did you need something?” Caerus added, his voice polite. Was she an employee, or another guest staying here? There was really no way to know.

hard love
HOLD ON TIGHT A LITTLE LONGER
WHAT DON'T KILL YA, MAKES YA STRONGER

When she had first finished Hogwarts, she hadn’t thought that this was the path that her life was going to take. She was going to be a potioneer. That had been the plan. And she had done that. She had gone to Bangor after all. She was Ursula Le Fay. She was smart, and she was beautiful, and she had learned to be deadly. That had made her into the person that she was now. She had grown into this woman that her mother had never expected her to be, but that was okay. She was still a Lady. And she was still the Le Fay heir. It made it a little harder to actually carry that bloodline on, but there were plenty of people that had the name. She didn’t want the name, or the title, or whatever else came with it. She just wanted to know she was the last one.

Her father had taught her everything that he would have taught a boy, and she thought that that had just made her stronger. It had made her everything that she should have been, and it had made her more. It had made her smarter. Smart enough to run this business that she knew nothing about. It made her smart enough to know that there were some things that you just had to believe. Some things that you just had to be a part of before you truly understood them. She figured that that was how most people would have viewed the Blackwood Cult.

The last thing that Ursula was going to do was admit to her parents that she had joined a cult, but she had. She thought that it would be fun. And she thought that Devil Worship went alongside the whole Necromancy thing. And since she was so keen on making her hearts in boxes project work, she didn’t think that it was a terrible idea to get the Dark Lord to help her out with that. Of course, she thought that it was a little amusing, that there were those in her life that had called another ‘the Dark Lord’, but Ursula was quite sure that that was false worship.

Well, not worship, exactly. But he was not the true Dark Lord. She had learned about the Dark Lord from the Blackwoods. From their cult, and she knew that they would approve of her ideas for what was going to happen to the muggles that had just checked in to Room Nine. They were going to die here tonight, and Ursula was quite sure that there would be plenty of experiments that could be done on them once she had secured their bodies from the coroner. That wouldn’t be too difficult to handle. She could be… Very persuasive.

For now, though, she was more curious about the magical boy. For as much as she didn’t hate men the way that the rest of the cult seemed to, Ursula thought that it was interesting enough to inquire as to what he was doing all the way out here, on his own. “Quite the opposite in fact.” She offered him a warm smile, “I was coming to check on you, to see if you might need anything. I want all of my guests to feel at home here.” That wasn’t quite the truth, and probably a little sweeter than she would have ever sounded in a different situation, but she did want to make sure that he had everything that he needed.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]After graduation, a part of him had been tempted to just pack a bag and go. His uncle had traveled after he had finished with school and that had sounded a lot better to him than going straight into a job like his father had done—and like Ophion had done. He wasn’t the heir. Surely, he had some leeway. He could try to strike some deal like Uncle Malcolm had, and then he wouldn’t have to go straight into his adult life without having a bit of fun first.
[break][break]
He had grown up listening to his uncle’s stories, after all. Had heard about him cliff-jumping in foreign lands, surfing the biggest waves in the world, and drinking in bars that didn’t even have names. Caerus couldn’t surf, and he wasn’t sure how he felt about jumping off of a cliff, but the drinking was something that he could get behind. Drinking, shagging beautiful and exotic women from different countries—sleeping on the beach and waking up to the sunrise over the water. That sounded perfect to him.
[break][break]
They had gone to South Africa for his uncle’s wedding and that had been a taste of what could be. But by then, he’d already been scouted by the Bats and had already decided to go to University of Bangor. Traveling like that had not been on the agenda for him. Maybe it would be eventually. Maybe he’d make that his plan after he graduated from university, but they had to get through this epidemic first. They had to open the borders again, had to get their magic back. But that would happen. He knew that it would happen eventually—it had to. There was no way that this was going to be the rest of his life. There was just no way.
[break][break]
For now, he had school to occupy himself with. It had been worse when University of Bangor had cancelled classes, and all he could think about was being sick and what was going to happen next. Now, he could at least go to lectures and work on assignments, and flirt with his classmates.
[break][break]
That was how he had gotten to this bed and breakfast, after all. Spending the night with a witch gone… well, not gone wrong, per say. But he wasn’t going to spend any longer with her than he had to. He’d much rather take a break here and avoid going home for just a little bit longer. That, to him, seemed like the best idea. It was a change of pace, and he needed that every once in a while. For as much as he was an extrovert, sometimes he liked to be alone. Sometimes the quiet did him some good. He had never actually stayed at a bed and breakfast before, but if there was one word that he’d use to explain it, it would definitely be quiet. So, it worked out.
[break][break]
That wasn’t to say that he didn’t appreciate company, especially when it was company that was nice to look at. Despite her being significantly older than him, he’d have no problem with flirting with her if it came down to it. He didn’t have much shame when it came to flirting. If a woman was attractive, she could be seventeen or she could be forty, and he’d still flirt with her if he felt like it.
[break][break]
For now, there just wasn’t really a reason to. She had likely come over to him for a reason and he figured he might as well see what that was first. He hadn’t known if she was a guest or if she worked at the inn until she’d spoken, and then he realized that he might very well be dealing with the owner—and that was a surprise. She didn’t look like the type of woman to own a bed and breakfast. He was expecting an elderly couple or something… that seemed like a bit of a cliché for a place like this. “Oh, thank you. I’m fine—you’ve got books and comfortable chairs. That’s all I need,” he said, with a grin. If she had whiskey, then that would really put it over the top, but he supposed that wasn’t really necessary. “Are you the owner then? You’re… not what I’d pictured.”

HARD LOVE
HOLD ON TIGHT A LITTLE LONGER
WHAT DON'T KILL YA, MAKES YA STRONGER

When it came to her choices, and her life, she knew that she had taken a far different path than she had ever expected it to. But she couldn’t really complain. She thought that she was doing alright for herself in the world that she was living in now. She thought that she was going to be fine. And whether or not she was everything that she needed to be, she didn’t know. Her family had expectations, after all. She was the last of the main line, and she knew that she was going to have to have a pureblood kid. One of these days, she was going to have to make that choice.

She was going to have to have a kid, and she knew that it would have to be with someone that didn’t mind when she gave it her name. Because she might have been the last Le Fay, but she wasn’t going to let the bloodline die because of her. Even if she wasn’t sure that she was the best person for that job, she knew that she had to do it. And she knew that she had to do it, despite what the boys were going to think. Because she was well aware that Merlin and Arthur would have opinions. They would have plenty of opinions about her having a kid.

Any kid. But let alone a pureblood kid. They would think that she was perpetuating some culture that they claimed to hate. She didn’t think that that was entirely fair either. Because she knew that she was a pureblood. She was part of the subgroup of their race that they supposedly hated. And yet, they loved her. Most of the time. She figured that there had to be days when they weren’t completely in love with her. But if they could just get it through their heads that they were in love with one another, she thought that the whole thing might have just been a little easier to understand for the both of them.

They seemed content to remain oblivious to that fact though. She didn’t know if they were ever going to get it through their heads that they would both be happier if they just admitted it. But pushing the issue had never seemed to work in the past, and she didn’t know what difference it would make now. They were just going to be as annoying about it as they had always been. And she was going to keep herself busy with other ventures. She had joined a cult, without them noticing after all.

As wrapped up in their own world as they always seemed to be Ursula thought that there had to be more to the story than that. That there had to be something that had happened between them that she didn’t know. But she knew Arthur like she knew herself. And she knew that they had never gone that far. That there had only ever been two people in Arthur’s bed, and she was one of them. He had loved Gwen, once, but they had been children. And then there had been Lance. And there had been her. And that was it. Merlin was a different story, but Ursula had had him in her bed too.

Those were not the boys that she needed to be focusing on right now though. No, there was a very different boy that she needed to give her attention to. The one that was sitting here in her sitting room. That had been here for the night and appeared to be staying for another. “Well, I’m glad that you’re finding everything you need. If there is anything, anything at all, please, don’t hesitate to ask.” Ursula knew how to be a genuine hostess. That lady lesson had not been lost on her. “I am.” She answered him with a light laugh. “Though I imagine you pictured some little old lady, right?” Offering her hand to the young man, her smile remained. “Lady Ursula Le Fay.”

AIN'T NOBODY GONNA CHANGE THE STANDARD

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]He had thought a few days away from the house would be a nice change. A necessary one, even. It hadn’t been the plan or anything like that. He’d just meant to go out for a little while and he’d just happened to end up at a witch’s house for the night. While she had been a decent shag, he’d had no plans to stick around for any longer than he needed to. No, that was definitely not something that he’d wanted to do. Instead, he’d made his way here. It had been relaxing. He couldn’t say that he’d ever stayed at a bed and breakfast before. He’d never had a reason to. Did anyone ever really have a reason to stay at a bed and breakfast? He thought the answer to that question could be answered by the small amount of people he’d seen since he got here. It wasn’t something that he thought a lot of people did all that often.
[break][break]
But the place was still running, so obviously it was doing all right. It was doing well enough to get by, anyway. He couldn’t pretend to understand all of what it took to run a business, but it was safe to guess that they were doing well enough just based on the fact that they were still open. That seemed like a decent enough guess to make.
[break][break]
Honestly, maybe he should start learning how to run a business or something. Ever since the epidemic, it seemed like he was unable to do everything that he was good at. He couldn’t fly anymore, which made him useless to the Bats. Of course, the fact that next to no one could kept his position safe for now, but there was no telling when teams would just start sacking people to find players that could actually fly. He had his schooling at University of Bangor, and classes had started up again for that, but he had decided on astronomy mostly as a whim. He wasn’t sure that was actually something that he wanted to do for a living. It was just a subject that he had always enjoyed at school. Caerus wasn’t actually all that sure that that translated into him wanting to be an Astronomer.
[break][break]
He just didn’t have a clue what he wanted to do, quite frankly. Going to university had just seemed like a good move to make, and so that was what he’d done. His father had been pleased enough with the decision. He would have been happier with a different major, but whatever. It had still been a decent enough choice. Or at least he thought it had been. Now that he had Quidditch off of the table, and there was only school, he was less certain. But he was just going to continue on with his classes and hope for the best. Maybe some grand epiphany would come to him, and he would figure out what to do with the rest of his life.
[break][break]
Maybe he’d buy a bloody bed and breakfast.
[break][break]
Unlikely.

Still, he had no complaints about the abrupt appearance of the very attractive owner. “Something like that,” he said, with a chuckle. He honestly thought that being an old lady was one of the requirements to own a bed and breakfast, but apparently he’d been mistaken. “Caerus Nott,” he added, before taking her hand and kissing it lightly. He was never one to introduce himself with titles—his father would have his head for it, but he thought it made him sound like a douche. Most people knew the surname anyway. They didn’t even need the qualifier.

hard love
HOLD ON TIGHT A LITTLE LONGER
WHAT DON'T KILL YA, MAKES YA STRONGER

Ursula knew that her mother would have preferred that she take a much different approach to her life. But what Malory Le Fay wanted was not always Ursula’s number one concern. She would do her duty, in time. She wouldn’t let the Le Fay name die on them. But she was in no way ready for such things now. She thought that there was still plenty of time, and she had no real prospects for something like that anyway. It wasn’t like she was exactly the type to be married well. She had never been that kind of person. She didn’t want to be married.

There wasn’t much that Ursula thought that she did want, outside of perfecting her research. And that was partially what purchasing this place had been for. It was simply for elderly muggles to die in their sleep. And she knew that there couldn’t be too many. Or else they were going to start to get suspicious. But there was no reason why every now and then, she couldn’t charm a coroner or two into giving her the bodies of her dead patrons. It was by far easier to have her corpses come to her than it was to hunt them down herself.

That seemed like a lot of work that she didn’t need to engage in. There was no reason to think that this wasn’t going to work. It had such grand potential. And yet, Ursula was surprised just how many young wixen seemed to show up on occasion. They weren’t looking for anything except a few days away, and she could relate to that. But she thought that it was quite intriguing to find that she was indeed finding more and more of them around these days. They were coming when they had no magic. To a place that she didn’t think that they were going to expect to find much magic at all.

The muggles were foolish and didn’t realize just what was and was not magical around the inn, but Ursula knew that she herself didn’t know all of the secrets of this place. Day to day operations were not her job. She paid the bills, and she popped in every now and then, but she thought that they were running well enough without her influence, they could continue to run it just how they had always done. She wasn’t putting anyone out of a job by taking over. She was simply helping that little elderly couple manage their retirement.

And giving herself an in so that when they died, she could have their hearts… But that had been secondary. They had had no children. They had had no one to pass this place on to, and it was rather disturbing, really. Some of the décor was enough to make her want to gag. But there had always been worse things. She could get over the gaudiness of the décor, if it meant that she was going to get what she wanted in the end, and Ursula had a way of always seeming to get what it was that she was after.

The boy in the sitting room though… She hadn’t yet decided what she was after there. He was a little young for her taste. Chuckling lightly at his words, Ursula shook her head. “If it makes you feel better, the woman that I purchased this place from had to be ninety if she was a day. She fit the stereotype to a T.” Though there wasn’t a doubt in her mind that she herself did not. “I, on the other hand, am equipped to offer you cookies, if you’d like them, but you’ve got no chance of me whipping you up a hand knitted scarf or something.” She didn’t think that she would ever be that type of little old lady. Even if she made it to the age where one could be considered a little old lady. “What brought you to the inn?”
