Look After You

[attr="class","reasonsmallwendy"]There now, steady love, so few come and don't go Will you won't you, be the one I always know?

[attr="class","reasonbodwendy"]Wednesday couldn’t believe it. Sitting at one of the tables in the Visitor’s Tearoom of St. Mungo’s, she found that she absolutely could not believe what she was seeing. They were carrying around muggle tools – stethoscopes and syringes. There were so few of them without magic that it was…seemingly impossible.

Of course, she knew that there would be fluctuation. Rare cases of immunity. There had to be – with every disease, there were those that just weren’t affected. But the vast majority of this community…the vast majority of the witches and wizards that had once called her Squib and Halfbreed were now just like her. They were without their magic. Born into a world which they had grown to love…only to have it all stripped away from them. Now, they were forced to exist much as she had her entire life: living on the outskirts of a society they had once loved.

She had decided to volunteer her research services to St. Mungo’s on an as-needed basis. Supposedly, she was going to help them find a cure for whatever horrible epidemic this was. In truth, Wednesday was using the chance to be closer to the epicenter of research so she could sabotage it. She often contaminated the samples they’d collected so the research would be halted. All while she was “studying the nature of the disease.” It was the perfect ploy really. Wendy knew that by being close to what was happening, she could protect herself…and Art.

She had never wanted her brother to lose his magic. That had been one of the more difficult side-effects of the virus that they had concocted. Because despite the fact that she wished for the entirety of the world to lose access to magic, Art deserved it. He had always been the one that had protected her – the one who had given her a chance when the rest of her family had only seen her as an annoyance.

Shuffling some of her papers around on the table, Wendy pretended as if she was working through some of her notes from the last sample grouping when, in reality, she was keeping an eye out for her niece. As if on cue, she saw her. “Olivette!” Wendy stood and beckoned her over. They had established a lunch date today before she began working at her internship. Seeing as they were both here, it made sense for them to get together every so often. And she saw so much of herself in Vet, sometimes.

Wendy was proud of her. Her niece was going to do big things. She was brilliant and kind – the perfect candidate for a Mungo’s Nurse. Though Wendy selfishly would have preferred to see her attend muggle university and get a degree there, she knew Vet had her sights set on the magical world. But, perhaps the current state of affairs might change all that. “How are you, sweetheart? Happy Wednesday!” She smiled slightly at her own joke – what was the point of having a ridiculous nomenclature if she couldn’t laugh at it sometimes.

Gaining a place as an intern at St Mungo's was a big deal fro Olivette as it was for her family. She knew that many members of her family were proud of her, most of all her parents. She wanted nothing more than to make them proud. Both of them had achieved so much in their careers and she wanted to replicate that if possible. It was important for her. She was already one the Quidditch team at Hogwarts and if she wanted to pursue a future in the sport, she was well on her at with a good start. But she wanted her feet in two different avenues, she had to have something to fall back on or pursue straight away if becoming a professional player didn’t work out for her. Maybe she was thinking too practically but she didn’t care. It was important to have two plans, even if she was well off from graduating at Hogwarts already. And Olivette was not about to let any chances pass her by.

Her mother had shown all her children tough love and that meant the Vet knew she had to seize every chance that came her way. She didn’t want to have any regrets. Some may think she was regretting having such a full schedule with all her subjects but she wasn’t. She actually loved the challenge and would even say she thrived when she was under pressure. She wasn’t the best at every subject and that didnt’ sit well with her, it was her ambition shining through. Even if she wasn’t in Slytherin, she didn't subscribe to the stereotype all that much.

She may like to read but Vet knew there was much more to everything past books. She played Quidditch, she went out of her way to talk to people and she got to know the right people. Of course since coming to St Mungo’s for her internship she had met so many more people but often these had been people that already knew her people but at least it was now nice to put a face to the name. Her father had come home from his days at work with many stories about the people he worked with and the great work they did.

Vet could only hope to follow their footsteps and do work a great as them one day. She wanted to contribute somewhere someday, that was was perhaps her biggest endeavour. It was unfortunate that she had to wait for her internship to start but that was all thanks to the epidemic. So many people she knew had been affected by it, most of them in her family. She hopes cure was found sooner rather than later so that people were back to feeling their best.

She was due to meet her aunt before she started her shift here. Her aunt was a Squib and therefore unaffected by the flu which may be blessing, but now so many people were just like her and the rest of her family. She made her way over when the older woman called her over. It so nice to see her.

Hearing her little joke made her roll her eyes playfully. ”I’m good thanks Aunt Wendy…..really? How often have you used that joke in your life?” the teen asked folding her arms, figuring the answer her aunt would give may be ‘many, many times’. ”How are you?”

Look After You

[attr="class","reasonsmallwendy"]There now, steady love, so few come and don't go Will you won't you, be the one I always know?

[attr="class","reasonbodwendy"]“So many times that I stopped keeping count, Vet, so many times,” She wasn’t proud of her dad joke. What well-respected woman would be? But, at least it had made Vet laugh. That was all she could ask for sometimes. Because even in this crazy Wizarding World, Wendy had family that she actually liked. Well, she had Art. And Art had children that she was overly fond of. Liza and Kyle’s kids? She could care less for them. “More times than I would actually care to admit, given my age.” She smiled as she gave her niece a hug, ignoring the fact that her arms were folded.

A part of her worried about them…Vet would be at risk for the Epidemic when she turned seventeen. From what she and Art had studied the ways in which the disease was passed, once the Trace was lifted, there was a finite period in which children retained their immunity. That time would be coming up for Vet soon, Wendy knew. It would only be a matter of time before her clock started ticking…

Provided everything continued to go as planned.

It was at moments such as these that she had conflicting feelings about what she and Art had done. Of course, she knew why they had done it. Deep-seated rage coupled with opportunity had led to the creation of the Epidemic that stripped the Wizarding World of their magic. But…sometimes Wendy had second thoughts. Like when she considered the future fate of her niece’s magic.

The entirety of the disease depended on her moral ambiguity. Because simply creating the disease and spreading it was not enough. Now, Wendy was purposefully sabotaging any and all efforts to make a scientific breakthrough about its origins and its cure. She was ensuring that the magical world remained in the dark…that they remained just like her.

Some of them hated it. She saw it in their eyes when she visited Art at Pyxis. They weren’t sure what to do with themselves when they realized they could no longer slam the door in her face with the simple wave of a wand. Wendy and her brother had evened the playing field…but at what cost. Letting go of her niece, she looked at her for a moment, a smile on her lips. Vet didn’t need to know about the internal struggle that she was experiencing.

Right now, all she wanted to do was spend time with Vet. She saw a lot of herself in her niece. The girl was bright beyond belief and had a promising career in medicine ahead of her, if she chose that path. Sitting back down at the table, she motioned for Vet to join her. “I’m great — it’s so good to be in a hospital again,” she pulled her papers back into a neat stack. “How are you? I’m so proud of you for doing this internship.”

Admittedly Vet wasn’t all that close to her aunt, despite how close her father was to her sister but she never worked out why that was. She was close Vivien but still, they didn’t spend all that much together and even less so since her older sister had graduated. But she didn’t think it was wrong for her father to be so close to his sister. She supposed in some families some siblings were just closer to others than some. She knew her brothers, for example, were very close even if they hadn’t been sorted into different houses. Her father and Aunt Wendy hadn’t even gone to the same school given that her aunt didn’t have magic. But she hadn’t ever spent that much time trying to work out what made their relationship tick. But still, she showed her aunt respect as her parents would expect her to and she caught up with her every now and then given that she was in London a lot more with her internship.

Vet smiled at her aunt and managed to move her arms from a folded position even though she was enveloped in a hug to hug back her aunt. ”It’s good to see you” she smiled back at the older women. Given that it was a Wednesday, it was one the days she happened to be at St Mungos. Her days were scheduled perfectly so they included her internship, her Quidditch training and it also gave her time to study. She was proud of herself for managing to do so well with her timetable. But Vet also had a pretty hectic school schedule. She knew her friends thought she was nuts for taking so many subjects but she just wanted some balance. It was far too early to say if she would drop any of her classes when she started her final year.

It was a decision she would make when the time came. She still had to finish her sixth year. Vet was still unsure what path she would be taking once she graduated from Hogwarts. Would she pursue a role at the hospital or would she follow her mum into Quidditch, she would have to wait and see which one she was drawn to more over time. She was already doing both but eventually, she would only take on professionally. There was also the possibility that she could choose something entirely different, though the witch knew it was unlikely. She had her strong subjects but she didn’t see herself going down that path.

She was enjoying her internship at the hospital especially in the wake of the epidemic. She wished her family hadn’t been the ones to fall sick but she knew they would pull through this. It was just a matter of time. So many people were frustrated they were sick, Vet saw it at school with the professors who had fallen sick and she saw it here at St Mungo’s with the staff who had fallen sick. No one wanted to lose their magic. She had no idea how anyone would be able to get it back but she hoped that someone was working on a cure, somewhere.

The teen smiled back at the woman as she said she was proud of her. She loved hearing someone say that to her. It made her realise she had made the right decision in undertaking the internship. ”Thank you, Aunt Wendy, I’m happy to hear you say that. It definitely adds to my busy schedule” she smiled as she sat down. ”How are things with you?”
