sweet. god, she looks innocent. Long wavy brown hair, soft-faced, usually with a smile. . .and her inhaler, allergy mask, and a bottle of pills at her waist.
She likes wearing plastic flowers in her hair, and while in Hogwarts, attempts to Charm them to look real. Why she does that. . .well. It's somewhat of a "screw you" to her allergies, that they don't and can't control her life. except they do. they totally do. just not as much as her digestive issues.

former school
Hogwarts

please take pity and not hufflepuff/ravenclaw. i have so many of them.
achievements
Wrote enough letters to @callum that he let her take an internship when she gets back into Hogwarts. It's probably the first time someone was annoyed into accepting one. . .but to be fair, she was likely accepted before the thirtieth letter. it just took a while to get to her, okay.

She'd like to say she's only physically weak, but well. That's a bit of a lie.

character history
Demeter Keola Hitchens was born ten weeks early on the mainland of Shetland. Her premature birth caused her to be rushed to a hospital in Aberdeen as the local hospital hadn't exactly been certified newborn-friendly by the time she was born. Also, they needed a good NCIU unit, and Aberdeen had a much better one. So within Demeter's first few hours of life, she was flying in a helicopter. She got out sooner rather than later, and all seemed well.

Mostly well at least, because at some point, her allergies were discovered. Demeter was a sneezing, sniffling, reddish mess with a raw nose. That was fixed somewhat easily, at least. They just got a prescription and started Dela on some allergy meds. In early primary school, her asthma was caught fairly often. Demeter complained often of "stomaches" but it was mostly thought to be kid stuff, as they mostly happene in school. She enjoyed school, though. She fidgeted around a lot, often playing with pens, plugs, and whatever she could get her hands on that might be taken apart and put back together.

Eventually a new school nurse came, and when hearing about Demeter's issues, decided to suggest that she go off both gluten and lactose. The nurse herself was lactose intolerant, and thought some of the symptoms matched up. The results were mixed-- there were symptoms that were certainly decreased, but others that rose. Dela's parents took the nurse's advice and went to another hospital in Aberdeen. After what felt like a year of endless medical tests, a diagnosis was reached. Well. Diagnoses.

She had Crohn's, and she was gluten intolerant. A specialized diet was prescribed, and all seemed well-- and then Demeter got a Hogwarts letter. It was difficult at first-- she always had to be extremely careful with whatever she was eating, and needed to make a few trips to the kitchens to explain how her diagnoses worked. Her parents were also useful, sending packages of food that she could have, and her meat intake was substantially increased, once she could have it without much fear that it was contaminated with gluten.  The first year was hard but the second year--

She made friends. A lot more friends, friends she fell into and loved. They were a year younger and wild, but she was able to be with them in meals and out-of-classes, and people often thought she was their age. She could have been, should have been. She was born ten weeks early, after all. Fifteen people lived on Papa Stour who weren't her family, and she suddenly had eleven friends, in addition to the five not-quite friends she had before. She felt like she belonged, and Papa Stour was starting to feel empty and isolated in a way it hadn't before.

She was scared when the fire broke out, because she had friends at the Slytherin table--  Astraea got hurt, after all. She was furious when an older girl decided she had the right to torture students. She . . . well, Papa Stour is a long way from London. Eight hundred miles, almost thirteen hundred kilometers, and it was usually easier to get things before she went to King's Cross, she was safe and far away-- but anxious and frantically writing her friends. She'd rarely felt so alone, waiting in those anxious hours for the owls to come back. After the murder of the Minister and and her parents were careful. Demeter didn't go alone to London, but she went to King's Cross with her safely-heritaged friends, with about half the schoolbooks she should have had.

After the coup, she was terrified and furious-- for herself, for her friends. During the Minister's speech, she kept her head down, softly simmering in anger. Her friends had to hold her back from reacting at the End-of-Year dance. Like other muggle-borns, she was taken in the end. She was relieved that her assigned job-- well, when she got one-- was . . .well, it was awful. Don't get her wrong. But she was lucky-- she wasn't a gardener, wasn't a cook or waste disposal. She dealt with things that were. . technically easier, when her Crohn's wasn't flaring up.

It's mostly here. Except for her father's biological parents?
family history
Iola Hitchens, nee Black as v distant ancestress.

Noa Akina isn't technically a Squib, by most reckonings. But Noa's father was, and so despite Noa's Makala mother, Noa is sometimes counted as a Squib. Noa met Amoe Kahina, and they had a kid, but both of them were pretty young, and their parents didn't approve for reasons other than that.  Besides, Noa had one sibling who had magic, and it was better to keep the secret than share it. But Noa's kid? It was arranged the child be put up for adoption, and somehow, through a trail of fosterage and near-adoptions, Demeter's father found his way to Britain.

Nikolas Papakonstantinou and Helen Oikonomopoulou were a normal Greek couple. Mostly, at least. They left Greece and somehow found their way to the Shetland islands. How, Demeter has never been sure. There's not exactly a more distant place in nearly all of Europe. But they lived on the mainland and there they stayed for years, until Demeter's father was adopted-- and then they decided to move to Papa Stour.

Annie Ruiz Irizarry was a Puerto Rican teacher who taught English. Mostly unmagical, at least to her knowledge. Sharp as a tack, eyes bright and hungry for knowledge. It was she who decided she'd marry Kevin Hitchens,  the half-Irish fatherless bastard and barely acknowledged by his family.

Dora Hitchens and Matthew Papakonstantinou crashed into each other on a bike riding trip. Quite literally crashed, that is, and then they decided to ride together to reduce that risk. Which turned into more and more, with an eventual proposal on the mutual condition that any children would have Dora's name. After all, Papakonstantinou was just too cruel a name in both English and Greek.

Just wanted to let you know that this is not going to count for free app week. You can't make her a janitor for Goshawk as a Muggleborn job, and a future internship doesn't count.
