[attr="class","reasonsmallremy"]Take me I'm alive Never was a girl with a wicked mind But everything looks better when the sun goes down

[attr="class","reasonbodremy"]The party was set, the drinks were poured, and the music was louder than it probably needed to be. But honestly? It didn’t matter. Because everything was perfect. When Caerus arrived for his birthday soiree, he wasn’t going to know what hit him. Because everyone who was anyone to him was here. Except…well, his parents. Remy was a miracle worker, but she couldn’t exactly pull off the impossible or awkward by inviting his parents to his very grown up, very exclusive nineteenth birthday party. No, it was mostly just friends.

A few from Hogwarts that she kept up with, LJ, obviously. Friends that he had met at Bangor. Quidditch mates. Everyone who meant anything to Caerus.

And Remy liked to picture herself at the center of all of it. The piece that held everything else together. Of course, it was probably a little self-important of her, but this party wouldn’t have happened if she hadn’t been at the helm. And, if her boss hadn’t covered for her with the powers that be at Hogwarts. She owed Lady Anička. She owed her big.

Without her, there was no way that she’d be here tonight – standing in the back room of the Opium Nightclub, watching as all of Caerus’ friends toasted to his birthday as they waited for the man of the hour to arrive. Another year older, another year wiser, isn’t that what they always said? Fortunately for Caerus, she didn’t see him getting any wiser. He was already too much of a wise-ass for his own good.

Remy folded her arms across her chest. Everything was going off without a hitch.

Remy was nursing her drink. Although she was far from inclined to hangovers, she didn’t’ particularly want to deal with one tomorrow…especially given the letter that Lady Anička had written the Deputy Headmistress. She would be at classes in the morning bright-eyed and bushy tailed…like she always was, right?

The door to the back room opened and the room erupted into a round of cheers. She could see the top of his head from her vantage point on the other side of the room, smiling as people threw their arms around him and wished him a happy birthday.

She was pleased with herself. Enormously so. Because the boy across the room deserved a good birthday. The Epidemic hadn’t been kind to Caerus or his family. And, without magic, he was feeling a little lost. Not that he would ever admit that to anyone, but Remy just had a feeling about it all. She’d sensed it when she was home at the Nott’s during Christmas. Maybe this would cheer him up. Remind him that even though his magic was gone, it wasn’t magic that got you drunk.

Caerus seemed to come up for air – the other people in the room finally allowing him a moment of reprieve – and Remy approached him, slowly slinking her way across the way. It didn’t take long to stride across the nightclub’s back room and meet him in the middle. “Happy birthday, loser. Surprised?” She asked, raising her eyebrows and handing over a glass of whatever the bartender had made – something strong, she’d asked for. All good birthdays ended in a blackout, didn’t they?

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]He supposed everything had worked out too smoothly after he had graduated. He had gone from not knowing what the hell he was going to do to having a starting spot on a professional team and a spot at University of Bangor. Caerus wasn’t in the habit of thinking that something was too good to be true—maybe back when his father had been at the work camp, when everything seemed to be going wrong for them, but not now. Instead, he’d thought that he had everything figured out.
[break][break]
Now he wasn’t as certain. Quidditch was off of the table, since he couldn’t fly. He knew that he was lucky that University of Bangor had come up with programs to keep those without magic in school and hadn’t just kicked everybody to the curb the way that Lufkin University had, but even then… now he onlyhad school, and he had honestly decided to go to school on a whim anyway. Did he really want to be an astronomer?
[break][break]
Sure, he loved astronomy. It had always been his favorite subject at school, and he had spent a lot of time up in the Astronomy Tower even outside of classes. Yes, sometimes that had been with female company, like everyone else—shagging on the Astronomy Tower was practically a rite of passage, wasn’t it? He thought so, anyway. But sometimes he had been there on his own, just because he had always found it peaceful up there. Since he’d liked the subject so much, and his father loved the idea of university, why shouldn’t he go to university for astronomy? It had made sense to him, but then there had also been Quidditch and that had just made more sense. His father hadn’t been that fond of it—couldn’t have him ending up too much like Uncle Dorian, now could he?
[break][break]
But it looked like his father had gotten his way on that front, because he was back to just being a university student. There were plenty of other ways for him to entertain himself in his spare time. There were quite a few bars around the campus that he was rather fond of. In fact, recently, most of his time had been spent in Bangor. It was just easier that way.
[break][break]
Being at home had just been more than a little bit depressing lately. Neither of his parents necessarily needed magic for their jobs, but they still hadn’t taken the loss all that well. They would never let that show in public, but behind closed doors was a different story altogether, and he was worried about them—but he also needed a break from it sometimes. It was why he found himself in Bangor as much as he was.
[break][break]
Today had been a different story, obviously. It was his birthday and his first birthday since his Hogwarts graduation meant a dinner with his parents, his grandmother, and with Ophion too. Rhea would be annoyed that she missed it, he was sure, but she would get over it.
[break][break]
His plans for the night were just with LJ, for a couple of drinks at Opium. That was fine with him. It had actually been a while since he had been to Opium, so he was looking forward to it as he headed through the main part of the club and toward the back. What he hadn’t been expecting as he made it into the backroom were cheers and only familiar faces. A surprise party—he definitely knew that LJ hadn’t been behind planning this. There was really only one person that could have been responsible.
[break][break]
It took him a while to get through the crowds of people, and by the time he actually saw Remy, a grin had already formed on his lips. Probably the most honest one since September. “Surprised that you threw an illicit surprise party while you’re supposed to be at Hogwarts? Somehow, no,” he laughed, taking the drink from her and immediately taking a swig. “How the hell did you do this?” He had seen her take advantage of her internship a few times since she’d gotten it—everyone did, but nothing like this.

[attr="class","reasonbodremy"]It almost looked like he was seeking her out, Remy thought with a smile as she watched him enter his party. Showered with affection and well-wishes, he looked surprised. Happy, even.

Not that it mattered, did it? She was more excited to be throwing a party than who it was for.

At least, that was what she was telling herself tonight.

Admitting that she wanted to do something nice for Caerus just because was a difficult pill to swallow. One that she was not going to unless absolutely necessary. She could play the part of the indifferent best friend. She was as close to Caerus as LJ was, wasn’t she?

They locked eyes and by the time she was handing over the drink, her smile had grown. He was surprised. Had probably been expecting something low-key with LJ. But Remington wasn’t going to let his nineteenth birthday turn out to be a drag. Not on her watch.

It hadn’t been all that difficult really.

Remy was a Slytherin, after all. Ambitious, ready to play dirty when she needed to. But also, resourceful and clever. She’d known her first plan of action was to play by the rules. Ask Lady Nika if she could cover for her. And, surprisingly, it had worked. Remy supposed the fact that it was her nephew’s birthday didn’t go unnoticed and perhaps even played to her advantage. But, here she was. With a cover that wouldn’t be blown. She had engineered the perfect birthday party.

“A good party planner never reveals her secrets,” Remy said with a roll of her eyes. But she knew he’d keep after her about how she’d managed to pull it off. It didn’t hurt to share with him just this once, did it? After all, it was his birthday. “Lady Nika is covering for me. Told her I had a very important nephew of hers to celebrate with tonight. The rest was easy.” She’d invited a few friends who’d told his other friends. Which resulted in the party expanding with ease. Caerus was a sociable guy – he had friends from all circles. And each circle was represented.

Old Quidditch mates from his Hogwarts days, new quidditch mates from this year, Bangor friends, Ravenclaw friends. All of them together in the back room of the Opium Nightclub.

She was proud of herself, really, for pulling it off somewhere between classes and her internship. Honestly, she thought, if it hadn’t been for those boys she’d convinced to do her Transfiguration Essays, she probably wouldn’t have been able to put as much effort into the guest list and decorations. She supposed she owed them some sort of thank you. “I’m supposed to be working on Thursday’s issue of HOME, actually. At least that’s what Lady Nika told Amaryllis.”

She took a small sip of her own drink – the one that she planned on nursing for the entire night – and narrowed her eyes. “You only turn nineteen-years-old once, Nott. Figured we might as well do it in style.”

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]He might not have been certain what he wanted to do with the rest of his life, but he had still figured out something to do after he’d graduated. It might not have been something that he was crazy passionate about or anything. Caerus had always liked astronomy, but did he like it enough to be an astronomer? He wasn’t all that sure. Quidditch, on the other hand, he had always loved that. He had thought doing that for a living did make sense. That being able to play in front of thousands of people, and the notoriety that came with it would be fun for him.
[break][break]
Honestly, it probably would have been. But he had only been on the Bats for a couple of months before the epidemic and now there was no way of knowing what was going to happen. Yes, he’d gotten a position as a starting chaser right off of the bat, but he was still new to the team. If they started to cut people that couldn’t fly anymore, they were going to cut the newest players first. He was sure that he’d be the first one to go. There was no way of knowing when exactly they were going to make those decisions, but he was sure that they’d happen eventually. Then he would only have his future as an astronomer as an option and it was only when he had only that as an option that he realized that he wasn’t all that sure that was what he wanted to do.
[break][break]
Caerus didn’t know what he wanted to do with the rest of his life, really. He had always been interested in his uncle’s stories of his traveles. If the borders weren’t closed, maybe that was what he would have done. But that wasn’t an option for him either. Instead, he could only wonder when the other shoe would drop—when he’d be dropped from the Bats, and what would happen then.
[break][break]
He wanted to think that they would find a cure before it came to that, but would they? How long did it take for something like that to happen? Probably a while, he knew that, but it had been months. Surely, there would be some kind of progress made eventually. Wasn’t that what they were working toward every day?
[break][break]
His birthday wasn’t the time to worry about that though. He had been looking forward to drinking with LJ and getting all of his problems out of his mind for a while. What he hadn’t expected was a party but, honestly, he shouldn’t have been surprised. Being friends with Remy meant that there was always something up her sleeve. He should have realized that she’d taken it upon herself to plan something, even when she should have been stuck at Hogwarts. Since it was their first year being separated for his birthday since they had met, of course she wouldn’t let her being at school stop her from doing something. “You got your internship to cover for you? Bloody hell…” He laughed. Yes, the woman was his aunt, but he barely knew her.
[break][break]
Really, the only time that he’d been around her for any extended period of time had been their trip to South Africa, and Christmas only last month. Certainly not enough for him to think she’d cover her intern’s illegal party-planning with the school. “And she fell for that?” Amaryllis was his aunt too, after all, and she knew that it was his birthday. More likely, she was looking the other way, but at least Remy’s bases were covered. Not that it surprised him.
[break][break]
He grinned at her words, shaking his head. “You definitely know how to do things in style.” He took a swig of his drink before continuing. “At least I have until June to figure out how to one-up you.” He was going to have to figure out something to do for her birthday now, obviously
