[attr="class","cbody"]Sometimes the line of being the head of the department of magical games and sports blurred a little with being the owner of a Quidditch team himself. He made sure that those lines never blurred unfairly, of course. But in situations like this one… well, where else did he really have to meet with the prospective seeker than in the Ministry? He was there Monday through Friday, morning until evening. Viktor had a wife, he had a family, and Beckett wasn’t going to ask him to meet up with him on the weekend or a weekday evening, and that had made it more complicated.
[break][break]
In the end, though, it had felt like far too much of a conflict of interest to have Viktor meet him at the Ministry. That and Ireland had looked at him like he was insane when he had so much as mentioned it.
[break][break]
So, instead, they had agreed on meeting at the Adria for a late lunch. It got him out of the Ministry and that made him feel more like just the owner of the Tutshill Tornados and not the owner of the Tutshill Tornados and the head of the department of magical games and sports. That was not a line that he wanted to blur today.
[break][break]
The office had been quiet for the past couple of months. Yes, they had been working tirelessly trying to see if they could even have a league season but compared to normal, it had been positively dull. So, it had been easy enough for him to go home early if he’d felt like it, or take a half day if Liv needed a break from being home with Cordelia. But since the announcement of the league season, the department had been in full swing. He had considered going home after this meeting, but he knew that there was just way too much to do to even consider this. He knew that he was going to have to go right back to the Ministry whenever they were done here.
[break][break]
That meant no drinking, unfortunately. If he was heading home, he would have at least gotten a glass of scotch or something while they met. But instead, when he made it to the table he’d reserved, he ordered a glass of water while he waited.
[break][break]
Beckett was looking forward to this meeting. Despite what he knew of the Krums—that they were neutral, bordering on light-leaning, he thought that they could have a productive professional relationship if Viktor could be talked into joining the team. Politics had seemed relatively unimportant to him as of late, in all honestly. They were practically all Squibs at this point. This epidemic had proven that it could strip anybody of their magic—from the Minister for Magic, to a Muggleborn maid. Nobody had been spared, so what did it really matter anymore?
[break][break]
Pushing such thoughts from his mind, he took a sip of his water and waited for the former seeker to show up.

The letters had come pouring in. He hadn’t been surprised, after the first one. Viktor had thought that he was probably too old to play. Before he had gotten the first letter from Beckett Graves, he had thought that he was going to just coach, and watch, and he was going to be a spectator, and push towards getting the borders reopened so that they could join in the next round of world qualifiers when they got up and going. They needed to play. Scotland, and Ireland, and England, and Wales. He thought that they all needed to play, and they couldn’t, if they were trapped here.

They needed the competition, they needed to get back on the world stage, they needed to be normal. And he knew that he was going to have to start rescouting his team, but he didn’t want to think to hard on that yet. Especially since he knew that he was coming to meet Graves about himself. He was the one that they wanted to play right now. And he didn’t really know if it was the best option. He knew that Desirae was worried about it. But he also knew that he could play. That if Dana hadn’t died, he probably still would have been playing in Bulgaria. But that wasn’t how it had gone.

His life was completely different than he had expected that it was going to be, and while he wasn’t upset by that, he was concerned that they were going to have to face challenges that he hadn’t faced before. Dana had married the quidditch player. She had known what to expect, what was going to happen. For Rae it had been different. She didn’t like crowds, she didn’t like the spotlight, and while there was some of that as the coach, there was about to be a whole lot more of it if he announced that he was coming out of retirement to play for a team in the British League.

And he had had several offers. But he had gotten Graves’ letter first, and Viktor thought that if anything, he was going to take that offer seriously. He knew who they were. Beckett and Olivia Graves. He wasn’t foolish, he was well aware that he man was a Death Eater, and he knew that they ran Ministry departments. They were not people that you just didn’t answer. And the Tornados were a very good team. That was something that he had seen for a long time. They had the winningest record of any of the teams in the league. Puddlemere United might have been the oldest team, but the Tutshill Tornados had the best record. And that was something to catch his attention.

Viktor wouldn’t have considered an offer from anyone except for the top tier of the league all that seriously, and Puddlemere had Cole. They didn’t need a seeker. The Kestrals were the newest team to the top tier, and the Falcons would have meant playing for Titania. Something that would have been amusing, really, to coach one another. But he thought that there was always the chance that that could come back to bite them both in the ass. No, the first – and likely only – offer that he was going to consider was from the man that he was set to meet with this afternoon.

Heading for the Adria, Viktor appeared in the designated apparation point, and headed inside. He was unsurprised that the other man had beaten him there, and he extended his hand towards him as he made his way to the table. “Afternoon, Mr. Graves.” There was a smile on his face, and he thought that he could still pull off the quidditch player aesthetic if he wanted to, but he had also been raised in a pureblood family, and he had manners, when he wanted to. “It’s nice to see you again.” Though they had met several times before, it had never been conditions quite like these.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Getting Quidditch going again had been his department’s top priority for the past couple of months, obviously. There had been a time when cancelling the season had been the only option that they had. They couldn’t have kept it going back in September, couldn’t have even finished the season when everyone had been as sick as they were. But now that most everybody was back to good health, it no longer felt as tactless to try to get the season going. If anything, he thought that people could use the distraction.
[break][break]
That, and it wasn’t fair to the players unimpacted by the epidemic to keep them out of the air any longer. It wasn’t fair to have teams paying people that weren’t playing, for an extended period of time while they made no moves to get the season going again. It was time, and they had made sure that everything had been figured out beforehand. All of the details had been ironed out long before the memo had officially been sent out.
[break][break]
Beckett knew that there were bound to be conflicts that sprouted up along the way. There always were, even with a normal league season and this was one bound to be far more complicated than a normal season. They would have to contend with teams having to almost entirely new rosters. Tryouts would likely be a mess and then there was a small chance that there would be teams that would struggle to fully fill their roster. They would have to see how that went. There was certainly a chance they wouldn’t have as many reserves as they’d like, but he thought it was still possible to fill up teams. Maybe with players that wouldn’t have stood a chance of playing professionally in a normal circumstance, but this go around, it was their lucky day.
[break][break]
The teams in the upper divisions were less likely to have those problems. They would have their pick of players, and it would get harder for teams to get filled the lower the division. But only time would tell how difficult that would prove to be. Now that the memo was out, and teams had started to scramble to recruit and get try-outs scheduled, his focus needed to be on the Tornados and filling up their team.
[break][break]
Pulling the greats out of retirement was not something that he’d come up with exclusively. No, he was sure that others had thought of it. Viktor had verified that during their correspondence, and he was sure there were other retired players that were being asked to play. Beckett knew it was a risk all its own—players retired for a reason. Because they were getting older and it was a sport better suited to younger players. There was a chance that Viktor was rusty and not as good as he once was. But Beck thought that he would do just fine. Assuming he could get the man to take the deal, anyway. He could only hope that further discussions with his wife hadn’t impacted those chances. That was what Viktor had told him he needed to do.
[break][break]
He hadn’t cancelled today’s meeting though. Beckett had to think that he would have turned him down by owl if he and his wife had decided that he wasn’t going to come out of retirement. He wouldn’t come all the way to London for that. “Nice to see you as well—and call me Beck, please. No need for formalities.” He gestured at the chair across from him and paused to let the man get settled before he continued. “feel free to get anything you’d like to drink. I have to get back to the office, so unfortunately I’ve got to stick to water.” Having a drink would be nice, and wouldn’t be enough to even get him buzzed, but it was still frowned upon. Obviously. He was a department head, after all.

When the letters had started coming in, Viktor had been surprised. He hadn’t played in over a decade. He had been a scout, and he had been a coach, but he had walked away to take care of his daughter. He had had to. That had been what had been most important, and he didn’t regret that choice. Vzá had been far more important to him, and she would continue to be. She and Jack both. And now he knew that he had Desirae to help with that, but he was still their father, and he wanted to be present in their lives.

He didn’t want to sacrifice time with them to go back to the thing that he loved, but he thought that he should have at least heard the man out. He was the Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports, and he was the owner of one of the best teams in Britain. Viktor thought that he had heard that they were the winningest Quidditch team of all time. But he didn’t know if that was true or not. It could very well have come from someone trying to boast about them.

What he did know was that he was going to have to listen to the man, and then make his decisions. If there was some way that he could work this out, that they could find a way for him to balance everything on his plate, then he would play. If he could get back into playing condition, that was. It had been a long time, and yes, he still flew every day, but coaching and playing were not the same things. And he knew that. He wasn’t foolish enough to think that he was going to go back in perfect condition. But if they wanted him to play…

He wasn’t going to turn it down. It had been a long time since he had done that, and he loved it. There was no denying that playing was his favorite thing when it came to the game that he had made his life all about. He had talked to Rae and they had decided that the meeting wouldn’t hurt. He could take the meeting, he could hear what he had to say, and he thought that this would be the only one that he did take. He didn’t want to play for someone that wasn’t the best, and the best were either the Tornados or the Falcons, and he didn’t think that he wanted to play for Titania.

Coaching her on one pitch and listening to her coach him on the other would have been amusing, for sure. But he knew her too well. He thought that they would argue, and that wasn’t something that he wanted to cause. He needed to go somewhere where he didn’t really know anyone. And so, he had taken Graves’ meeting. And he had listened to Narcissa’s nagging about not taking anything that they offered him right off the bat. He knew that, of course, but he let her worry anyway. He would let them both worry.

Meeting Beck Graves at the Adria was fine. He didn’t mind coming in here, though there was always the chance that, like at the Elbow, someone was going to be around that wasn’t exactly magical. And that meant that he was going to have to watch what exactly it was that he said. “Beck.” He nodded in acceptance of the man’s name, figuring that there was no need for him to say that he could call him Viktor, everyone did. Or Krum. He’d answer to either.

Chuckling at the man’s words Viktor shook his head. “Water’s fine. I have to go back to the hotel when I’m done, and Cissa will never let me hear the end of it if I show up smelling like whiskey.” He didn’t think she’d actually be mad, and he didn’t think that Rae would mind. But he thought that water was still for the best. “I appreciate the letter, though I have to say, I was surprised.”

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Once he had figured out the logistics of getting the league started as a department head, he had been able to think about it on a more personal level. Beckett knew that it was important to not blur those lines. He knew that there were people that thought him owning a Quidditch team was a conflict of interest with him also running the department of magical games and sports, and so he did everything that he could to give them no reason to think that. More than they would already just assume, just because they wanted to be able to write the Tornados’ success off of on that rather than giving them credit where credit was due.
[break][break]
The Tornados had always been a good team, after all. Even before he had bought them, they had performed well. He didn’t think that his wife would have backed a team that only lost. Underdogs could be fun sometimes, sure, but he thought that would get old rather quickly. Beckett still barely understood how the Cannons had such a loyal fanbase when they hadn’t won a league season since 1892. It was absolutely baffling to him, but he supposed there did have to be something said for the loyalty. It was impressive.
[break][break]
But it was beside the point. The fact was, the Tornados had been one of the best teams in the league for a long time. Him being the head of the department did not give them any unfair advantages. He made sure that they had no reason to think that.
[break][break]
In fact, that was the main reason why they were meeting at the Adria. It would have made far more sense, convenience wise, to see if Viktor could meet him at the Ministry. It was where he’d have to be all day anyway. But he did not want to blur the lines of the work that he did there and the work that he did for the Tornados. Trying to recruit a retired player onto his team felt like a conflict of interest if he had that meeting in his office in the Ministry. Ireland had reminded him of that too, of course. It was definitely better to keep that separate.
[break][break]
But this was worth taking a lunch out of the office today. Quidditch was back on and now he had to get right on trying to recruit the players that they needed. He was sure that there would be people trying to get big names out of retirement. Beckett thought that was one of the smarter and more obvious moves. Assuming they were not too old to play and, technically speaking, professional Quidditch players tended to retire around their thirties and forties. And with the lifespan of a wizard being what it was, it really wasn’t unreasonable to ask forty or fifty-year olds to come out of retirement. Yes, they might not be as good as they once were, but they were still able to play. To him, it was the obvious first move, apart from trying to recruit players with promise from lower division teams.
[break][break]
Beckett chuckled at the man’s words. “Were you?” He was sure that surprise had worn off as more letters arrived. “Us Quidditch owners are going to be wrestling over the best players we can get over the next few weeks, I’m sure of that.” It was going to be a bloodbath, in all honesty. He was going to be curious to see how the teams shaped up. “Owling you was one of the first thoughts that we had and we didn’t want anyone to beat us to it.” When you thought of the greats, Viktor Krum was obviously one name that came to mind. He had been the youngest seeker to ever make a national team, after all.

INVINCIBLE
YEAH, I WIN EVERY SINGLE GAME
I'M UNSTOPPABLE TODAY

Playing quidditch professionally had been what had made him famous. He had been the youngest seeker ever named to a national team, and he had been good. They had lost, true. But he had still caught the snitch, and that had been a feeling that he didn’t think that he was ever going to forget. There were a lot of things about that year of his life that he was sure that he wasn’t going to forget any time soon. But there were good things as well. His friendships with Hermione and Fleur had both endured through the years. And he had made a go of a professional career after that.

He had played in Bulgaria, and he had played for the national team. Now it was more complicated. He was older, and he hadn’t played in nearly a decade. Vzâ had been little when he had gone to scouting and making sure that she was taken care of. Losing Dana had been a part of that. But he knew that going back now, he wasn’t going to be doing it as a single parent. He had Desirae, and while he was sure that this was something that she hadn’t expected, he thought that they could figure it out.

If this ended up being something that he was going to do, he thought that there was a good chance that they could figure it out. And if they couldn’t he wouldn’t play. He wasn’t going to prioritize this over her, and their family. The kids would always have to come first, and Vzá and Jack were going to be the deciding factors in all of this. If he could do it, and still have time to be present for his family, then that was fine. He thought that he could. There was enough down time that he could still be with them.

And he knew that the timing wasn’t great. It didn’t take a genius to see what had happened last week, and he thought that it was well worth it to start considering what he was going to do when she left for good. Because he knew that it was going to happen eventually. Hopefully further down the road, but he wasn’t going to count on it. He thought that there was still a good chance that he was going to lose her in the middle of this change, and he knew that Desirae was going to take that hard. Not that he particularly liked it either, but he liked her going back to Lucius less than he minded her leaving the hotel.

Focusing on what was going on in the rest of his life was not the point of this meeting though. He had come here to meet with Graves, and to listen to what he had to say about coming to play for the Tornados. They were one of the best teams in the league, and while he had always been favorable to the teams that his own players played on, he could get behind the Tornados. There were only a handful of the letters that he had even looked at before he had thrown them in the trash.

It wasn’t about the money; he would play for next to nothing if it meant that they were going to be able to keep paying those that had gotten sick a little longer. But he wanted to make sure that he was playing for a team that he could be competitive on. He was still Viktor Krum. Perhaps he hadn’t played in a while, and perhaps he wasn’t quite as young as he had been then. But he was still him, and he still thought that he could do this. If the Graves were willing to take that chance, then so was he.

“I was.” He nodded as the waiter set his water down in front of him, “I can’t say that I’m as young as I was when I first started out.” That had to be a worry. He was going to be forty-three before the season really got underway, and he knew that he had been out of the game for a long time. “But I’m grateful you thought of me. I can admit that I do miss it more than I thought I would after all these years.”

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]There were significant concerns in scouting retired players, he knew that. Quidditch was a competitive sport. There was no set and done age where the players had to retire, but he knew that most people had their own opinions on when a player should return. Most people tended to think about retiring in their thirties. Even if a wizard or witch lived a fair bit longer than Muggles, it was still a taxing sport. Players tended to be at their best in their twenties and started slowing down in their thirties. It was just the way that it was. There were players that held on until their late thirties, but he knew that there were plenty of people who whispered and had opinions of those players that ‘held on too long.’

There was a certain age that he wouldn’t even had considered when it came to recruiting retired players. Maybe other teams would have other ideas. Maybe they would recruit later, recruit former players in their late forties or even into their fifties, but that wasn’t something that Beckett was comfortable with. He had played Quidditch in Hogwarts. He had been good too, though he had never thought much of playing professionally. Just from owning a team, just from watching matches, though, Beckett could say with certainty that he would not get up on a broom and play in a league match at fifty-five years old. And he would not consider recruiting someone in their fifties either.

His eye was more on players that had retired earlier, those still in their thirties preferably. Viktor was, in his opinion, pushing it a little bit on an age he was comfortable with. Just for the sake of safety, in all honesty. The last thing that he wanted to do was convince someone to come out of retirement only for them to get injured on the pitch. That was absolutely the last thing that he wanted to do. And forty-three was pushing it, in his opinion, especially with how young Viktor had gotten his start. Especially since, generally speaking, Viktor did not have a traditional seeker’s build.

But he also was one of the best players that the world had seen, in his opinion, and if there was anybody that he wanted on his team—anyone that he wanted to pull out of retirement, it was him. If he thought he was able to come out of retirement, then that was what Beckett was going to trust. It wasn’t up to him to make that call, it was up to Viktor.

He had to convince him, though. He had to see if this was something that he was even seriously interested in. And he hoped that it was. If it wasn’t, he knew that Olivia would never let him hear the end of it. The Tornados were more hers than his. He loved the team and loved winning, of course, but she was the one that threw china when they lost, and she was the one that had most of the ideas when it came to who to recruit. If he couldn’t bring Viktor in, he thought there was a good chance that the former seeker would be hearing from his wife personally for another attempt. Of that, he had no doubt. Beckett thought he might as well try to spare Viktor from that conversation. For his own good, obviously.

“Yes, fair enough,” he nodded. It was his main concern as well, after all. “Personally, I can’t imagine getting up on a broom and playing professionally at my age. But I also never have played professionally,” Beck added, with a chuckle. So really, he wouldn’t have been able to imagine getting up on a broom and playing in a league match ten years ago or twenty years ago. “If you think it’s something that you can do, though, I’m inclined to take your word on it. After a physical, obviously. That would be a requirement.” To make sure that there weren’t any health concerns that made it actually dangerous or impossible for him to play on a professional level. Barring any trouble with that, though, it would be up to him if he thought it was something he could do. “I imagine that never really goes away,” he chuckled, before taking a sip of his water.
