glitter and gold
I've got fire in my soul
Rise up, ting ting, like glitter

When they had first talked about this, Kate hadn’t known if they were being serious or not. She was glad that they had been though. It was easier if they did this at the same time. She knew that Draco had been to meet with Nell’s best friend, and it was high time that she got to meet the witch herself. That, and she knew that Draco wanted to meet Hiram. They were nothing if not thorough. It was time that they both met the other’s partner. That was part of their best friend obligations to one another after all. She got to say if there was anything that she hated about the blonde, and he got to pass judgement on Hiram. That was how this worked.

This was the only thing they could do that wasn’t going to seem too far-fetched. Or at least that was what she thought. There was normally a ceilidh here on the weekends, but Kate had heard that they were going to do something new this weekend, and the bar was having Trivia Night instead of the normal dancing that went on. She didn’t know how good at this they were going to be, but it was worth trying at least. They were going to have a good time, regardless of whether or not they knew any of the answers. It wasn’t about winning, it was about getting to know one another, and seeing where this night took them.

Hiram had come to pick her up, and Kate had had Kenna drop them off outside the bar before she headed inside. She was the one that had had them running behind, per usual. Really, she wasn’t sure how she had ever kept up a life working in the Ministry. She was notoriously late for things, and the magazine gave her more than enough freedom for that. But she didn’t think that she was the kind that allowed herself to be regulated in too many ways. Not anymore. Not now that she had started to learn what it took to make her happy. She didn’t like rules.

Pulling him with her through the door she looked around for the two blondes. They weren’t hard to pick out over the heads of some of the others. “This is going to be great. I promise, Sgaoileadh.” Doing things that she wanted to do always made her worry a little bit. Things with other people felt like she was asking a lot from him. But she knew that he would have told her if he truly didn’t want to do this, and she thought that something like this, just the four of them, was far better than asking him to escort her to some grand party she didn’t even want to be at.

Stepping forward to greet her best friend, Kate let go of Hiram’s arm, and brushed her lips over Draco’s cheek before she turned to smile at the woman that was sitting beside him. “Lady Flamel. It’s nice to finally meet you.” She inclined her head just a little bit to the older witch and then she looked over her shoulder at the man that she had come in with. “Hiram, this is my friend Draco Malfoy, and Lady Perenelle Flamel.” Her attention turned back to the two blondes, “This Hiram Fitzgerald.” The look that she shot at Draco across the table as she slipped into her seat spoke volumes of its own. Be nice.

glitter and gold
Do you ponder the manner of things
In the dark, the dark, the dark, the dark

Draco was really excited. He had endured a very awkward lunch with Perenelle's best friend all by himself, but he did not want to put Nell through that. He wanted her to meet Kate, though--and he wanted to be there. He wanted to meet Hiram--and he wanted Kate there when that happened. So, this double date was perfect. He had hopes that they might all turn out to be fast friends, because who wouldn't hope for that? Who wouldn't hope that the woman he had fallen for and his best friend could be friends? And he wanted to be friends with her beau, as well. Even if he was old, he did fall into the seventeen to seventy age range that he had deemed acceptable for them to shag back in his and Kate's drinking days.

He still partook, but he knew that that Yaxley witch did not. He understood that, but also had the impression that she was not bothered by others drinking around her. If she was, he really didn't think she would suggest Ghillie Dhu and a trivia night as an option for this little get together. When he and his date had arrived at the club, the wizard had found a good table and procured some drinks--four glasses of water were on the table in front of each stool and then he had picked up a pair of pints for himself and Nell. He would have bought Hiram a drink, as well, but he didn't know what the man would prefer--and the same went for Kate. He knew she wasn't drinking alcohol, and he had very nearly gotten her a Shirley Temple, but had refrained. He personally loved a good Shirley Temple, but very few people in the world knew that fact (Kate being one of them, of course). But he didn't want to give the impression to Hiram that he was mocking Kate's choice not to drink. That was definitely not the impression he was looking to make.

"I'm excited for you to meet Kate." Draco said, leaning in closer to Nell as he did so to be able to keep his voice low. That was not the first time he had said that line to his girlfriend, but it was the first time since they had arrived. He thought very highly of both women--and he was so proud of them both. Of course, he was excited. A grin came over his features when he saw his best friend coming through the crowd. He stood up off his stool to hug her as she brushed a kiss against his cheek. "Look at you, almost on time! I didn't expect you two for another half hour," Draco joked, winking at Kate playfully before turning his gaze to Hiram. He extended his hand to the man as Kate gave out names and introductions.

The handshake was firm, but not overly stiff-- a gentleman's greeting, but a warm and friendly one. He wasn't making any macho statement with the gesture. It was all goodwill.
"Good to meet you, Hiram. I've heard only good things--and you managed to get this one here within the hour of when she said to be here, so you must be some kind of miracle worker." Fleur had met him with aggression and hard warnings, but he did not want to take that approach with his best friend's significant other. Admittedly, he did not know the sort of things about the man that the Weasley had known about him and his kin...but regardless, he intended to be friendly with the bloke. Kate liked him, and so long as she did, Draco was going to try to be pro-Hiram...unless he turned out to be just a total arse or put off bad vibes. But for now the man was getting the benefit of the doubt.

GLITTER AND GOLD
Do you walk in the valley of kings?
Do you walk in the shadow of men
Who sold their lives to a dream?

A double date was something that she hadn’t done in years. She had gone on more than a few with Fleur when they had been children, but that had been a long time ago now. Nell knew that she had subjected Draco to a most hostile meeting with her best friend, and yet, she thought that he had come through it rather unscathed. It was hard, she knew, when her best friend was a Weasley, and he a Malfoy, but Nell was trying really hard to break down those barriers. Draco’s past was just that, the past. And she knew it. She was not in the dark. She was well aware of what he had done, of all of the people that had died, but that boy was not the man that she spent her time with now.

She thought that it would always be a part of him. It was always something that he would carry, and she wanted to help him with that. She never wanted to make it worse. But Nell didn’t know exactly what it was that she wanted to do. Just be there, just be supportive. That was all that she could do. And she thought that he knew that she was there. That he could talk to her. She trusted him, and she felt that trust reciprocated back to her. He knew her secrets, even if they weren’t as dark as some of his past, she had tried to open up to him. To give him everything about her, so that he could trust her too.

And she wanted to meet Kate. She had heard about her, of course, and the Yaxley witch had been easy enough to look up. She worked for a magazine in London, she used to work for the Ministry. There wasn’t anything shocking about her past. And she was Draco’s best friend. Nell was willing to make an effort to like the other witch. After all, they had one very important person in common. When Draco came back with drinks she smiled, “I’m excited too. If she’s half as lovely as you make her out to be, we’ll be fine.”

It was only moments later that the witch she had only seen pictures of came through the crowd, and Nell was surprised to find that she recognized the man with her. Draco had said Hiram, but she hadn’t put together just whom Hiram was. Hiram Fitzgerald, as in Blake’s missing, and since returned from the dead, father. That was a surprise, but a good one. From what the blonde said, she was trying to have a relationship with the man, and she did like him being back in her life. Those were positive notes for the man, and information she would have to share with Draco later on.

“Just Nell is fine.” She slipped off of her seat to greet the Yaxley with a kiss to her cheek. “Draco speaks the world of you, you know?” Her smile was genuine, and warm as she spoke to the red head before she turned that smile on the man that had come with her. “Hello Hiram.” Whether or not he knew of her from Blake, she did know of him, and all of her preconceived notions were good ones. “Please, both of you, join us.” Slipping back around to her seat she took a sip of her water as she waited for everyone else to settle into their seats. If they were going to get to know one another, she thought that they were at least off to a decent start.
