[attr="class","cbody"]She had not made the decision to join this team lightly. Samira was well aware of the risks. They all were. They all needed to be. This was a situation unlike the wizarding world had ever seen before. This epidemic was unlike anything that had occurred in the world—naturally or otherwise, and she knew that every indication pointed toward it not being a naturally occurring virus. Samira was somewhat of an expert in that, after all. She had spent the entirety of her career focused on immunology. It was something that had interested her since her undergraduate years, when she had first learned about it. It wasn’t an in-depth introduction to the topic, but it was enough to spark her interest and enough to make her specialization clear once she went on to medical school.
[break][break]
It was why it was so important to go to the United Kingdom, to see what she could do to help. She knew that there were brilliant minds in the country. She was sure that there were. And she was just as certain that there were witches and wizards that, like she had, gone to medical school to become a doctor. Those wixen were not unable to practice medicine without magic. They would be able to use their knowledge in nonmagical medicine to try to push forward with a cure.
[break][break]
But she also knew that there hadn’t been much progress, and she knew that it had to be difficult to work under the conditions that they were working under. Doctors that might have backgrounds in medical research were likely dealing with their own loss of magic, worrying about their families and friends, and dealing with the impacts of a struggling economy and government. They had been working hard, she had no doubt about that. But sometimes an outsider’s perspective would be helpful. And if that outsider happened to be an immunologist… then that would be helpful. Or that was her hope, anyway. She wanted to be able to help them in any way that she could.
[break][break]
They all did. That was the reason that they were all her. They all knew the risks of going into the United Kingdom but here they were anyway. By this time tomorrow, they would be there. They would be trapped behind borders, as committed as anyone to finding a cure and getting things back to normal. They wouldn’t be able to leave until that happened.
[break][break]
Samira knew that they all had different goals. It wasn’t just about the cure. She knew that there were those that were coming to help with the economy, those coming to help abolish the registration of Muggleborns for good and find a more sustainable path leading forward. She couldn’t claim to know every single of what they were going to do. Of course, the meetings that they had been focusing on for the past couple of days had been informative, but she was well aware that the political climate was not going to be her focus. She didn’t know their plan. She just knew their end goals. All of their end goals. They were going in with those in mind, and she had to hope that they could accomplish everything that they could there.
[break][break]
She would be lying if she said she wasn’t feeling the slightest bit of nerves this evening. By this time the next day, she would be in the United Kingdom indefinitely. This assignment could take months or years. There was no way of knowing that for sure. But she was committed to it. She was committing to helping the United Kingdom in absolutely any way that she was able. And Epidemic X was a challenge—as an immunologist, there was nothing quite like a good challenge. It was like a riddle, in a way. And one that she was determined to solve.
[break][break]
If she could help with anything else, of course she would. But somehow, she didn’t think that her political opinions or savvy could stack up much next to the powerhouses that were coming along with them. Yes, with the group that had been assembled, she was sure that they would prove to be successful. Politically, it would all be a matter of how well the Ministry cooperated. As far as the cure went… well, that was something she would only know for sure when she got there.
[break][break]
Now, there was nothing to do but wait. She had been planning on spending most of the night preparing in her hotel room, but had ended up making her way down to the hotel bar. Samira had figured there was a good chance someone from the team would have the same though, and there were at least a few people that she wouldn’t mind getting to know better. They would all be working closely together, after all. But the familiar figure at the bar was one that she already knew intimately. Not a stranger at all.
[break][break]
At least, not in that sense. She knew who Luiz was as a person. She knew his credentials and his reputation. She also knew what he looked like naked, and how capable he was as a lover. Her mind was, of course, not on having sex with him right that second. But having a drink with him before they embarked on this venture seemed like as good of a way as any to spend the night. Or at least a few hours. “Do you mind if I join you?” She asked, raising an eyebrow at him as she slid onto the barstool next to him. He was welcome to refuse her company. She could just order a drink and go find somewhere else to sit. But he likely had as much on his mind as she did, if not more since he also had to lead this time. With everything that tomorrow would bring, they could probably use a distraction.
