SHIN OF ADOX
Zoe has had this runny nose since she had returned home from spring break. She had been telling everyone that it was just her allergies. A lie she had used to reason why anything was off about her. It was clear to anyone who had eyes. Zoe was putting an act on. She had been miserable for weeks, and it truly felt like there was only one person that could pull her out of this. But there was no way that could happen now. So, she used all the energy she had to act like she was fine. And it took a lot of energy to joke around with friends and to pretend to not know who that one Ravenclaw boy was. In the past, Zoe was never one to hide how she was feeling before. Zoe had never let her family have this much control over her back. The only way she knew how to deal with this was to be anything but herself.

Someone with logic may say why it is that Zoe now found herself in the bathroom stall in her current state. The remains of tears putting a shine to her cheeks. And her nose feeling stuffier than ever. She had barely turned the corner when she saw him. It had happened a few times before. Where she had not been feeling as strong, and she would run off somewhere and hide. If anyone were to ask her what was going on, she would give them her terrible cover-up story. Oh, it’s just allergies. Someone was bound to break the code soon if they haven’t figured it out already. Allergies were not her problem. Heartache was her problem.

Zoe blew her nose before standing up and tossing the last of the toilet paper she had been using as tissues into the toilet and flushing it. Facing the door of the stall, Zoe took a few deep breaths. Though her heart was not racing as it was a few minutes prior, it still had yet to calm itself fully down. She just needed to be able to pull herself together just enough so she could walk out with some sort of confidence. Zoe pushed the door open and threw her bag to her back. Relieved to see that no one was going to see her at the moment she went to the sinks. She let the warm water wash her hands as her eyes met her own in the mirror. A sigh came from her. Her face was puffy. Not that it wasn’t like that most of the time these days.

Zoe took the hair tie off from around her wrist and pulled her long brown locks into a messy bun. She flicked the water back on and splashed the cool water on her face. The temperature of the water felt relaxing on her flushed face. She gave a quick moment to be thankful that she never got super into the makeup everyday routine. What a disaster her days would be if she was even if she was one of those girls who just threw on just some eyeliner and mascara.

She looked at herself in the mirror once again as if it would show her what she wanted to see. She wouldn’t be able to wait too long as she heard someone else in the bathroom. Not wanting to be caught as a complete mess Zoe was quick to dry her face. She was then attempting to make it look as if she was just busy fixing her hair.

[attr="class","wordz-koala"] Demeter had seen Zoe enter the bathroom some time ago, and it wasn't truly that she was stalking her friend, but. . .

She was concerned. Ever since she'd gotten back to Hogwarts, Zoe had been there for her nearly as much as the rest of Greek kids, a familiar and comforting face in her dorm. They'd bonded fairly quickly and well, and Demeter didn't feel like she was in any danger from her. Gryffindor was good for that--had she been in Ravenclaw like how the Hat had considered, maybe she would. There were more pureblood supremacists in that House than there were Gryffindors, an uneasy combination that she'd never quite liked.

Zoe though-- she was kindness, much like Archibald Weasley. She cared about people, she was bright and sweet and loyal and a good friend. There was warmness emulating from her, and Demeter had hoped to see that continue, to make it continue. That was what friends were for after all, and Zoe had helped her with a lot. But ever since Easter break. . .

Her friend was definitely for the worse, sorrowful and silenter. It worried Dela, concerned her that Zoe's family had done something. Dela knew not all families were good ones, or good ones for their children. She'd had a childhood friend like that from the mainland, a boy she'd sat in school with. He'd gotten better for some time, and when she'd last seen him too long ago, he'd had plans to . . . she didn't remember. It was hard to escape Shetland and all you knew. Falkland, maybe he'd wanted. She didn't know if he could, but oh, how she hoped he could be happy.

Time was ticking on past, Demeter's watch informed her. It had been a welcome-back/holiday/late birthday gift from Calypso, a steampunk revelry that held times across the world, easily changeable by the pull of a small side lever. She watched the seconds crawl by in Japan, played west across Russia, and she'd watched the time go by in Greenland for what felt like far too long. She had to do something, because now this was getting worrisome. So she stepped into the bathrooms, ears pricked for anything, everything. The door was still closed, but there were no truly worrisome sounds, thank goodness.

At last the other toilet flushed, the stall opened, and footsteps sounded. Water ran, and Demeter let it go, silently counting the seconds. If this really was just a bathroom incident, best to do it with clean hands on Zoe's part. Demeter pushed open her stall door with her elbow, careful not to touch anything.

"Zoe." Dela's voice was quiet, and she let a small smile bloom. "Hey, it's just me. What's with the sprechin? That's not really an allergy face, trust the queen of those."
