I told you so
told you some day you'd come
crawling back and asking me to take you in
It wasn’t like she ever planned on being stupid. Sabine hadn’t even gone anywhere. She didn’t think that there had been any reason to worry about a few gin and tonics while she was working. And then Philip had called and said that they were all going to go out if she wanted to meet them. They were family as much as they were her friends, and she hadn’t thought that it was a terrible idea. At least not until she realized that not only was Opium packed, her ex-husband was there. And that had been when the night had started to go downhill.
She didn’t know why no one was policing how much she had had to drink, and by no one, she most certainly meant herself. Normally she was so much smarter than that. Normally she would have left, but she hadn’t left. She hadn’t even backed away from him when he had found her in the crowd. She had thought that his eyes were going to skim right over her, but they hadn’t. And somehow she had ended up laughing, and that was when things had gotten worse. He shouldn’t have been able to make her laugh. Because they were divorced, and clearly their lives did not align.
She wanted what he couldn’t give her. And she knew that. She knew that she was power hungry, and she was aggressive, and she had wanted to treat his music career like the business that he should have been treating it as all along. She could have made him a bigger star. She was sure of it. If she could have gotten him away from his mother and gotten a leash on that band. But that wasn’t her problem anymore. And when he had talked to her, she shouldn’t have answered him. She should have just walked away.
But she hadn’t walked away. She had laughed, and danced, and she had had a good time. Which had been the point of the evening in the first place, but it certainly hadn’t been the answer to end up doing it with her ex-husband. They should have stayed kilometers apart. Separate countries did them well. But that wasn’t the case last night, and Sabine knew that the last thing that either one of them needed was headlines if people saw them back together. She would always be the youngest CEO of a financial institution in Great Britain, and he would always be Tib Duke.
They were not good for one antoher, or they hadn’t been. Before all of this. But she didn’t think that would have changed. There was only the one thing that they had ever been any good at at all. And either it was the gin that had gone to her head, or whatever was floating around in his, but somehow, they had ended up here, in her bed. And she didn’t quite know what to do with that. They had rarely spent any time at Wynridge when they were married. And she had brought him back here last night.
Who was supposed to be making sure that she didn’t do anything stupid? Shagging her ex-husband was stupid. The fact that she was twenty-one years old and had an ex-husband was a testament to her apparent need to make a string of bad decisions one after another when she was intoxicated, and purebloods were around. Not that she could really blame it on him being a pureblood. Because that wasn’t his fault. But they were everything that she wanted to be. She wanted that name. She wanted that influence. She wanted it to set Larsen Economics that much higher.
They were already the top financial institution in Wales. She wanted all of Great Britain. And she knew that she could get it. She could exactly what she wanted, if she played her cards right, and she kept her head on straight. Convincing a Slughorn to fall in love with her would have been the best thing that she could have done, but she didn’t think the younger one was that stupid, and she knew better than to go for the elder. She wasn’t out to ruin a bloodline. Just to make her mother proud of what she had done with her own.
Rolling over onto her back Sabine sighed as she bumped her leg into Tib’s. “Are you awake?” He wasn’t snoring, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t still asleep. So long as he was still breathing, she thought that was probably the most important thing. She had no idea what all he had had in his system last night, and if he was dead, then she would really have headlines that they didn’t need.
