@davis
Griffin Bar and Grill
When Murphy was presented with a chance to relax, he would take it because, with a job like his, he never knew how many changes he would get. Normally he would have Katja with him but she was at home in Geneva. He missed her terribly but they both understood why he had to be here. So far they had been very little trouble with the coming of the contingent from the confederation.

Murphy was pleased with the progress they had made so far and he was looking forward to seeing the magical community in the UK go back to the great and revered community they had once been. This was the community his mother had told them about when she had been living here. He looked forward to going home and telling her about how far they had come here.

He walked into the bar and took a seat at one of the vacant bar stools. It was dinner time so he picked up the menu and when one of the bartenders came by he ordered a beer and went back to looking at the menu, trying to decide what to eat. There was too much choice and Murphy was not the kind of guy who just had a go-to meal in a pub. While he was far from a foodie, he did like to try different foods. He nodded to Davis as he saw him sit next to him. ”Good evening, you here for dinner as well?” They knew each other well from working together and there weren’t that many people that Murphy knew in London

It was days like this that he missed her. He missed his wife and he missed the things that she did. Some days he thought he could hear her laugh or smell her on the wind. Time was healing the hurt that he felt over the way that things had been left before… well… before. She was gone now though and he was learning that it was time to let her go, but the pain that he felt on days like today. Her birthday, it came rushing back. He called her parents and they talked for a while before they had to go for some reason and he said he had to go to dinner. Davis had no plans, and his hotel room suddenly felt very, very small.

He left and walked, stopping only in the lobby to ask where a good place to eat was and then he was through the floo. He stepped through with a small smile and then walked to the bar. He didn't know why he felt the need to come here, or even listen when there were more than a few places that he had frequented since he had come here. A change of pace, a change of scenery. Maybe someone would pull his attention and his focus and he could get out of his own head.

Ordering a beer and a burger he looked over his shoulder at the man beside him. "Yeah and trying to get out of my own head. How are things going for you all?" He thought that he was making progress but who knew really?

Murphy liked to get out and to see places, he had been doing that since he had graduated Beauxbatons. His father had joked that he had inherited that trait from him as that was how his father had met his mother. Murphy liked to disagree because he thought that many people around his age liked to travel. Katja had not yet been to London and he wished he could bring her here. But that would have to wait until happier times. He knew that she would like the place. He hoped that one day he could do that.

For the moment, he had a job to do here. It was why he had chosen to come here. Murphy had thought he was ideal in coming here to work with the security detail of the group coming here. At least the muggleborns were now free. It was nothing that he had done. The man knew that his job was not so instrumental with the group but he was rather there to protect them should any trouble ensue. Luckily, nothing had happened to date. There was no telling just how much longer they would be here. But he knew that he couldn’t wait to get back to his wife.

They had plans to start a family with their own children and the nightly phone conversations were not going to make that happen. They just shared what had happened with them during the day and even if nothing happened that day, Murphy just like listening to her. He owed her life to her and he felt like she gave him purpose. His upbringing had not been bad but if it was not for her, Murphy would be at work all day, every day.

Murphy smiled and took the beer from the bartender as Davis spoke to him. ”Not bad honestly, I’m missing my better half” he chuckled. Katja really was the better part of him. ” How are things for you in the research field?”

How did you explain to the dead that you were sorry? How did you tell someone who was no longer there that you would take it back if you could? He had no idea, and if he did he would have already done so. Davis would not be so racked with guilt and feel as if the world was upon his shoulders. In the blink of an eye, a simple surgery he had gone from a man who had everything that he wanted in this world basically to having nothing. He had lost everything that had mattered to him and since then had been consumed by the overwhelming emptiness. His work was his only solace was his work now and the booze.

Drinking was probably something that he needed to do less of, but he couldn't find any other way to get through the days sometimes without having that to look forward to. It wasn't like he was in one place long enough to make any true and lasting connections any more, and the few people that he thought he could trust were those within the ICW. One team one goal, right? Most of them were single and unattached, lacking the things that would tie them down to other places and other people.

This job was not one that posed immediate danger, but everyone on the team knew, there was always a chance they might not come back from this. There was a chance they may never be able to change what they set out to, and in assignments like this, there was a chance they could lose their magic. Davis had family, but no one who relied on him. He had a brother who could take care of his parents if something happened to him, but that did nothing to ease his mind. He took his beer and took a long drink from the bottle before looking at his wedding band and took it off, spinning it on the bar top. "You and me both, kid." He pulled out his wallet and showed the man the aged picture of himself and Mary-Elizabeth. "It would have been her birthday today."

Things weren't going as good as he would like, but he knew these things took time and these things were never easy to discover and fix. If they knew where things came from it would be easier. "Plowing right ahead, as scheduled." he said with a small smile. Trust no one.

When he was at home, Murphy didn’t go out too much, he and Katja weren’t old but there often both exhausted from their respective jobs that their nights were often made up of the two of them collapsing on the sofa together. That wasn’t possible now he was in the UK. Still, he made do with telephone calls and text messages. They weren’t the same but Murphy knew that he was still here for a little longer. In his time he wondered if people who saw him constantly eating at pubs and cafes and always on his assumed he was a bachelor. He hadn’t been one in so long.

He wondered if one day, he could bring her here to London. Murphy understood the city had a lot of history but he wasn’t the right person to appreciated that. But his wife, she would soak it all in. To avoid missing her so much, Murphy did his best to keep himself occupied with his work. As it turned out though, things were going well for the contingent form the federation. So he tried his best to go see the sights of magical London while also making sure that no suspicious activity was taking place in that location.

But tonight he was off-duty and Murphy was willing to step in if the need arose. However, he didn’t think that Davis who had just joined posed any kind of threat. Murphy had not heard of any conflict or sabotage taking place in magical medial research but then again, there could be a first time. The epidemic that had swept through the magical communities of the UK had taken place for the first time.

He sipped on his drink, he caught sight of the expression that his colleague wore and wondered what was going on his mind. He was about to take another sip but paused and put his drink back on the counter. He looked over at the picture and smiled. ”She was beautiful, I’m very sorry for your loss” he said offering Davis a sympathetic smile. Stories like this made him want to be a better person and the best husband he could possibly be. He was glad that Davis was able to answer his question. ”That’s good, I’ve seen many people struggling without their magic, hopefully, your work leads to cure to restore their magic.” He understood that these things took their time and it could be rushed or mistakes could happen and their time here would be wasted.
