Davina Rhiannon McCrae
33 - Female - Pureblood - 09/03/1981

Professor of Potions/Head of Hufflepuff House

Appearance and Personality
General Appearance: Davina stands at 5'5", and is rather slender. She is fair skinned, with dark hair and light blue eyes.
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Skills: Her understanding, as she is a very easy person to talk to. She is very approachable, and is willing to help anyone with a problem and is usually quite observant when noticing that something is wrong with someone. This is true even if she doesn't know them all that well. She is also incredibly good at problem solving, and thinking through situations in order to determine the best route to take, and that is helped by the fact that she is not impulsive in the slightest. As a true Hufflepuff, she is very loyal, though her family would obviously say quite the opposite. While she was technically 'disloyal' to that cause, she is loyal and sticks to her own instincts and opinions and doesn't doubt herself. Potions, although she was gifted at transfiguration and charms as well when back at Hogwarts, she very much excelled in Potions. So much so, that even Professor Snape didn't hate her, which was saying something for her being in Hufflepuff. Davina had the skill to invent her own potions, but is content at the current time to just be a potions master.
Weaknesses: Because of everything that has happened with her family, Davina sometimes has a hard time trusting individuals. She is just wary when meeting new people, although this isn't something she portrays openly. Also, she sometimes has problems getting stuck in her own thoughts when she is thinking about her family, Pierce, and everything going on in the Wizarding world. Although she is very much a Hufflepuff at heart, she also couldn't come out of a pureblooded family with none of their traits, and is sometimes incredibly calculated. Normally, she comes off as very unthreatening, but can be a force to be reckoned with when angered. This brings out her more negative traits. Another weakness is her family, as she is affected daily by her past with them. She never did report the incident that occurred with her mother and sister, which she feels guilty about every day, but she doesn't want to see them put in Azkaban even if they do hate her.
Positive Personality Traits: Alert, calm, cheerful, contemplative, discreet, fair, firm, forgiving, idealistic, intuitive, loyal, observant, patient, shrewd, sweet, witty
Negative Personality Traits: Calculating, cautious, clumsy, inhibited, opinionated, preoccupied, reserved, stubborn
Hobbies and Interests: Potion-making, meditation, yoga, hiking
Character History:
Even as a young girl, Davina knew that she was going to have her work cut out for her as far as her family was concerned. She disagreed completely with their ideals about the purity of their blood and wiping out those who dirtied the magical world. From what she heard about Voldemort, as well, she was glad she had never met him. She certainly wouldn't have wanted to deal with the pressure of her family disapproving of her decision to not get the Dark Mark that both of her parents had, though having to join the group just to please her family had never seemed like a good option as well. Although she thought a lot about this, she was relieved that it was a decision she didn't have to make.

Since her entire family had been sorted into Slytherin on both sides for years, Davina had assumed that she would be as well, even though she realized it wasn't the best fit. She was surprised as well to be sorted into Hufflepuff, but knew that her family wouldn't be pleased. They weren't in the slightest, and though she tried to make them proud in other aspects of her life, like in her schoolwork, it was hard to do when all they cared about were the dark arts.

Her worst nightmare came true when Voldemort did indeed return, and she knew that she would eventually be faced with the choice of joining him to make her family happy or going the way she wanted to go with her life. Though as she got older, she realized it wasn't much of a choice. She couldn't live the life her parents wanted, no matter what their reactions were.

The Battle of Hogwarts happened during her fifth year, and she knew that her family had to be there fighting for Voldemort. At first, her only focus was getting the younger students to safety, but that quickly turned into duels with Death Eaters that she couldn't prevent. She knew that if her parents saw her, they would know that her decision had certainly been made.

She could only assume they did, though she never saw them. She went to their criminal trials, glad to see that they weren't being sent to Azkaban. As a sixteen year old girl, she was effectively disowned by her parents and sister as they began their work release programs and she had to live her last two years of Hogwarts at an orphanage.

Upon graduation, she moved into the Muggle world to regroup from everything that was going on, though she still kept up with potions making as that was something that she was thinking she wanted to do as a career once she rejoined the magical world completely. In 2004, she met Pierce Howe, a Muggle, and the pair began to date. They dated very happily for a year and a half, though she knew that she eventually would have to tell him about the magical world. This kept her away from that aspect of her life for a bit longer than she planned, since she had to hide it from Pierce still. Finally, she did tell him, and although he was shocked, his opinion of her was obviously not changed. The pair got engaged a few months later and moved in together.

In early 2006, they found out that they were expecting a child, and although they contemplated pushing up the wedding, they realized that it would be unnecessary as they were planning a small wedding anyhow and Davina didn't really care if she was the size of a damn house for it.

Before that could happen, though, they were caught off guard one early summer day, by the appearance of Davina's family. Pierce was killed by Moira, and after a duel, Davina had to kill her mother in self-defense. In order to ensure that her sister didn't muddy their pure line, Blair put Davina under the Cruciatus Curse long enough to ensure the woman would miscarry. It was then that they left the house, taking the body of Moira with them.

Davina had no idea what to do then, still in shock and pain from the after affects of the unforgivable curse. When she could finally move, she called the Auror department and claimed that they had been attacked by Death Eaters though she did not know who they were.

It was very soon after this that Minister Durant came into office, and she kept updated in what as going on with her father and sister, regardless of the harm that they'd caused her. She is not at all pleased by the worsening conditions for the work camp, though she remains openly neutral as she knows as a pureblood and a member of a family well-known for practicing the dark arts, the Ministry was keeping a close eye on her. However, her fighting at the battle helped them to realize she didn't follow in their footsteps, as well as losing her fiancé and unborn child to them.

She tried to get her life back on track, taking up a job at Hogwarts soon after. It was there that she really got to renew her interest in potions making and eventually was asked to be the head of Hufflepuff a few years after working there.

Plots and Politics
Where does your character stand in the treatment of death eaters and their families? Davina has very mixed emotions on this issue, though some would say after everything that she had been through with her family, she should want them punished more than anyone. Her sister and her father are both Death Eaters, still working off their crimes in the work camp. Her late mother was also a Death Eater, though she died before the treatment really started to go downhill. Although she knows that they need to be punished for the crimes they committed, she doesn't like to know how poorly her family is being treated, feeling as though it wasn't at all justice to give the same treatment back to them as opposed to taking the higher road or simply just putting them back in Azkaban. She tries to remain outwardly neutral about the matter as a whole, however, since she knows that the spotlight is being brought down on any pureblood that is sympathetic. This is particularly true since she is a member of the family.

How was your character and their family affected by the reign and death of Voldemort? Davina was a fifth year student at the time that Voldemort attacked Hogwarts, and had a hand in trying to help get younger students out of the school. By doing so, she did find herself in several situations where she'd had to fight in the battle, much to the ire of her family. Previous to that, she was greatly affected by his reign simply because her parents were so involved in it all as Death Eaters, and her sister was so prepared to become one herself upon graduation and was willing to do anything she could for the cause. The pressure was put on Davina to join as well, which she luckily was able to put off as she was younger. Voldemort dying spared her from having to deny her parents their desire for her to get the Dark Mark, though she was of course upset about them being put on trial. She knew that they did a lot of horrible things and that they deserved to pay for them to make up for the families that they had hurt, but it was also simply not easy for a Hogwarts aged girl to watch her entire family going through criminal trials. Although her mother is now dead, and her sister and father don't speak to her, she is still upset to see them continuing to be punished for these crimes even all of these years later.

Family History:
Roderick McCrae was born in Scotland, though he moved to England at a young age. When he began Hogwarts, he already had a lot of knowledge of the dark arts from books and what his parents had taught him, though clearly he hadn't begun practicing it. Like his entire family before him, he was sorted into Slytherin and was prepared to follow the Dark Lord. It was at school that he met Moira, and they began dating in their sixth year after both having attended and attacked Muggles in a raid together.

Moira McCrae (née Selwyn) was born the only child of a pureblooded family apart of the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Her parents brought her up learning of dark arts and she always knew that she would be following in her parents' footsteps in becoming a Death Eater. Her parents had been in Hogwarts at the same time as Voldemort, after all, and were in the original group the Knights of Walpurgis. Since she wholeheartedly believed in the Dark Lord's cause, she knew that she would be doing anything she could to help the cause.

By the time they graduated Hogwarts in 1974, they had already been doing dark magic for several years and had taken part in quite a few attacks that took place regardless of not being an official Death Eater. But immediately after graduation, they did get the Mark, and Moira married Roderick soon after. They were quite focused on the war, though they did have their first child a few years later, not that they let that stop them from taking part in the war. They were both enraged by the defeat of the Dark Lord, knowing that they couldn't give up on the quest to rid the wizarding world of the scum that didn't deserve to be there. They knew that the Dark Lord would be back and they were prepared to wait for that day as long as it took. Both Moira and Roderick evaded punishment for their acts in the war, claiming that they had been under the Imperius Curse and that the one time that Roderick had broken free of it, their daughter had been threatened.

It was in 1982 that they had their second child, and even though she knew nothing of the Dark Lord, she was brought up as well on the importance of following him when he returned, as well as teaching both of their children about the dark arts. They were pleased that Blair seemed responsive to this, though they could Davina was less so. Luckily, they knew she would come around, as it was in her blood, after all.

They tried to live their lives as normally as possible to evade further suspicion, but they were not at all pleased when Davina was sorted into Hufflepuff, making her the first in either of their lines that had not been placed into Slytherin. They became harder on their youngest daughter, but they once again knew that she would eventually follow her true path. When the Dark Lord returned in 1995, Moira and Roderick were called to the graveyard, glad that what they had been hoping for years was finally coming to fruition. Once again they would be on their way to ridding the magical world of all those undeserving. Blair was excited about this as well, knowing that she would eventually be able to prove herself to him as well. She joined the Death Eaters upon her graduation from Hogwarts.

The very next year brought about the Battle of Hogwarts, where Moira, Roderick, and Blair were all present and fighting for the Dark Lord. They had assumed that Davina would be joining them once the fighting begun, but she was nowhere to be seen. They later saw her actually attempting to get children to safety, and even later saw her actually dueling against a Death Eater. They were enraged by this betrayal, having decided to never again speak to the family member that they now considered a traitor. Fighting against the Death Eaters at the Battle of Hogwarts was inexcusable, and no one in the family spoke to Davina. They all saw her at their trials, and ignored her then as well, as they continued to do as they begun their punishments in the work release program.

2006 brought about Moira, Roderick, and Blair finding out that Davina was not only engaged to a Muggle, but pregnant as well. It was as though the betrayals only got worse with that one as years went by. Without much thought on the matter, the family went to see her, with only murderous intentions in mind. After all, they could not allow their line to be sullied by a Muggle. Catching the couple off guard, Moira tortured and killed Pierce. This initiated a duel between Davina and her mother, and although she was not at all attracted to the dark arts or the missions that her family stood for, the end results unfortunately was Davina casting the Killing Curse at her mother after only just barely dodging the same spell being cast on her. Angry and seeking to cause her sister pain, Blair held her sister under the Cruciatus curse just long enough that the woman wouldn't go insane, as she wanted the woman to live with the fact that her fiancé was dead, that she had killed her mother, and that she was going to lose her baby. Blair and Roderick left, and they haven't spoken to Davina since.

Once Durant had taken over and their punishment had been moved to the work camp, their ire began to grow. Blair and Roderick were the only two left of their line, as far as they were concerned, and they needed to ensure that the glory of their family name was brought back along of those of all other purebloods. They both joined Miles Brant's group, dedicated to revenge and regaining the power that is rightfully theirs.
