Creature-Inducted Injuries Healer at St. Mungo’s – Dragonologist Apprentice
Appearance and Personality
General Appearance: Elliot MacGuffin has never been overly concerned with his appearance. Often sporting a rather large pair of glasses with thick frames, he’s always seen himself as a classical nerd. It wasn’t until he graduated Hogwarts that he grew into his looks. Now, with dark auburn curls and tamed facial hair, he’s got the looks of someone that any girl might fancy. About six feet tall, Elliot sometimes appears slightly taller due to his hair and the glasses that he usually pulls onto his head when reading manuscripts. He prefers to wear casual suits than his wizarding robes, and often opts out of St. Mungo’s-required attire when he can. He has a few scars and burn marks, remnants of his days as an Apprentice Dragonologist at the Sanctuary, but most them are hidden from the general public when he's fully dressed (the scar on his neck is the most visible; it runs down his entire side to his hip bone). He walks with a small limp, noticeable but not overly pronounced, which is the remnants of the same Dragon attack that left him nearly paralyzed.
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Skills: Inclined to working with animals, Elliott has always had a way with beasts ever since he was young. He understands how to approach, communicate with, and win the trust of animals that usually shy away from humans. He has an inclination towards Dragons — being one of the few who has ever helped a Hungarian Horntail nest in captivity. He fancies seeing biology put into real-life practice. Elliot has the strange ability to identify most rocks that he encounters — a trick that’s very helpful with identifying Dragon nesting grounds. Uncommonly perceptive, Elliot knows how to read animals more so than people, so he can come across as a little dense if you’re trying to get across something that is not obvious. As a healer, he’s compassionate and empathetic, though sometimes a little blunt when it comes to diagnosis. He’s seen a lot of creature-induced injuries over the years, so, generally, he knows what he’s looking for and what he’s looking at.
Weaknesses: His age — although Elliot is rather mature for his age, he is still only 26 years old. Many of his patients are older than him, which often makes them question his abilities as a healer. What he lacks in age, he makes up for in experience, however, having trained with some of the most impressive Dragonologists — including Charlie Weasley – and having extensively studied medicinal magic through the Healer Training Program. Overly trusting of both animals and humans, Elliot sets himself up for disappointment. A few years back, he was viciously attacked by one of his favorite dragons in the field and has had his heart broken on more than one occasion. Dense and sometimes oblivious to people’s true feelings, he will persist until he gets hurt, though once he learns his lesson, he’s not one to make the same mistake with the same person.
Positive Personality Traits: Compassionate, perceptive (about analytical things, but not when it comes to human emotions), unselfish, patient, intelligent, humble, trusting, analytical
Negative Personality Traits: OVERLY trusting, stubborn, perfectionist, rigorous, often oblivious to emotions, quiet, sometimes shy
Hobbies and Interests: Animals, creatures and beasts (especially Dragons); medical magic; meeting new people from different walks of life; helping others understand the importance of Dragon Sanctuaries; a clean, organized workstation; diagnosing and treating creature-induced injuries (especially if there’s a mystery to be solved regarding the nature of the injury); studying/reading/retaining useless information; teaching others (eventually aspires to be a professor of Dragonology at Lufkin University)
Character History:
As the heir to the MacGuffin name, Miles was always treated more kindly by his parents. Saorise always doted on him, knitting him little sweaters that he wore religiously until the age of thirteen. When Miles MacGuffin finally came of age, he was married to Hazel Bernard, a French pureblood that he had met while vacationing in the South of France with some of his school mates. Theirs was a relationship born out of love and a mutual fascination with each other, a sharp contrast to the arranged marriage his brother, Henry, was faced with.
It became very obvious that young Elliot had a strong connection to animals. As a child, he was close with his parents’ first Red Irish Setter, Monet. Though he seemed uncommonly perceptive when it came to animals, creatures and beasts, Elliot had a difficult time expressing himself to his parents. More often than not, when he described something that was “wrong” with Monet, it became a metaphor for what Elliot was feeling. Although his parents were concerned for his inability to articulate his own emotions, they were impressed with the level of compassion and helpfulness he showed for Monet and his younger sister, Lucy.
At Hogwarts, Elliot was (in his opinion) unceremoniously sorted into Gryffindor. It was a sorting that confused not only him, but everyone else in his family. He was not archetypally brave, nor did he see himself as courageous, but the hat had been certain of his decision. Among his classmates, Elliot often felt like he stuck out like a sore thumb and found solace with the Ravenclaws (including one Ellanora Mountbatten).
When the family dog, Monet, was put down during his third year at Hogwarts, Elliot withdrew from his classmates, choosing instead to study on his own. It was during this year that he discovered his enormous love for Care of Magical Creatures. The creatures that he met filled the strange void that Monet’s passing had left and helped him through a difficult time in his childhood. Socially awkward and bashfully nerdy, Care of Magical Creatures helped Elliot find a sense of normalcy that he had not previously experienced until then.
He breezed through the rest of his years at Hogwarts, graduating with top marks and enough motivation to continue his education. He began the Healer Training program directly after finishing Hogwarts, but a year later, when the opportunity to travel to the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary presented itself, Elliot jumped at the chance. There, he met and trained with the famous Charlie Weasley, who taught him everything he knew. Elliot formed intense bonds with the dragons there and was well-known for his ability to quietly approach most dragons and gain their trust. Along with Charlie, Elliot was among the few who helped one of the most tumultuous dragons, a Hungarian Horntail, breed and nest in captivity.
But all good things could not last forever. After spending three years at the Sancturary, disaster struck when one of the Romanian Longhorns attacked. Many were injured, but Elliot suffered the most intense of all the injuries. Bleeding out and barely conscious, the last he remembered was the dragon baring its teeth over top of him before he passed out.
When he awoke, back in St. Mungo’s — the very place he had left all those years ago — he was in the Creature-Induced Injury Ward. It was not a quick recovery, as the dragon had nearly severed his spinal cord and left him close to paralyzation. Elliot was given the news he would be stuck in the ward along with a small glimmer of hope. They would allow him to return as a Healer-in-Training (a job he had left nearly three years ago) while he underwent physical therapy at St. Mungo’s. So for the next two-and-a-half years, it was a constant, up-hill battle for El. Every day was a struggle of trying to use his legs and studying his hardest. He had an advantage, however. As a Dragonologist and patient, he had seen a lot of injuries come and go and was well-versed in Creature-Induced injuries. Elliot decided that would be his area of study.
After graduating from the training program, El took a full time position in the Creature-Induced Injury Ward. While he is still not fully recovered from his own injury and still sports a small limp, he is a quick study and a compassionate Healer. Sometimes blunt, he can startle patients with his tell-it-like-it-is attitude, but in the end, he means well and is a very competent healer.
On his 26th birthday, Elliot’s father approached him about finding a wife, citing the times as “very dangerous for those who aren’t pureblooded.” It seems like a silly thing to Elliot, but rather than an arranged marriage set up by his father, he wanted to at least try and find a woman that he could see himself marrying. Unfortunately, his father’s time limit is running short so he will be forced to make a decision about his future wife soon.
Plots and Politics
What is your character’s stance on the recent takeover of the Ministry by Death Eaters? Elliot’s never been one to be overly concerned with politics nor does his immediate family have any connection to the Death Eaters, but he feels slightly wary about what is going on. As a self-considered scholar, he knows enough about magical (and muggle) history to know that this probably isn’t going to end in sunshine and rainbows. As for what he’s going to do about it? Probably nothing. He’s more concerned with making sure that his patients at St. Mungo’s receive proper treatment.
Where did your character stand in the treatment of Death Eaters and their families under the late Minister Durant's rule? Elliot’s uncle, Henry MacGuffin, was imprisoned in Azkaban during Minister Durant’s reign, but, seeing as they were never that close to begin with, Elliot really doesn’t have any strong feelings either way. Sort of like the previous question, he feels that there’s some morality issues with both of the recent leaders, though he’s not going to do anything about it.
How was your character and their family affected by the reign and death of Voldemort? Elliot’s uncle and aunt, Henry and Eleanor MacGuffin, were known supporters of Lord Voldemort during his rise, which meant the rest of the MacGuffin family was under suspicion for some time. However, Miles and Hazel, Elliot’s parents, were never involved with the Dark Lord and remained clean and unmarked.

Family History:The MacGuffin family was a prominent Irish pureblood family in the early days, but they slowly fell toward the bottom of the ranks as the modern age took hold of the wizarding world. When Deaglan MacGuffin married the youngest of the Macmillan daughters, Saorise, their status barely rose. Even though long ago, Melania Macmillan married into the most noble house of Black, the more recent iterations of the Macmillan family were considered poor and hardly above blood-traitor status.
Shortly after their marriage, Deaglan and Saorise had two boys, Miles (the oldest) and Henry MacGuffin. Constantly in competition, Miles and Henry were always in a race to the finish line, whether it was who could impress their parents with the most exotic spells or who could score the most goals during extended family Quidditch.
When Miles came of age, he was married to Hazel Bernard, a French pureblood that he had met while vacationing in the South of France with some of his school mates. Theirs was a relationship born out of love and a mutual fascination with each other, but Henry was not so lucky. A few years later, when Henry came of age, he met Eleanor (Lanfen Zhāng), his arranged marriage, designed to bring together two more lower-branched pureblood families in matrimony. They had met during their years at Hogwarts where they were both sorted into the Slytherin House. It was nothing more than annoyance — they neither loathed nor loved one another and that continued to be the case until their marriage.
Miles steered clear of choosing sides during the reign of Voldemort, but Henry was keen on joining up and received the Dark Mark as soon as he was able. The two sons spoke less and less over the next few years as Miles focused more on his family, though he never gave up on his brother and constantly argued for him in the court of law.
Now, with two grown up children, the Miles and Hazel have settled into retirement in the highlands of Ireland where they often go hunting with their Irish Red Setter, van Gogh.
