general appearance
Unlike most of her siblings, she took after her paternal grandmothers-- the actual grandmother, and the great-grandmother-- who were of Punjabi and Gujarati descent respectively.

The black hair, she knows, definitely comes from her mother-- well, either her mother, paternal grandmother, or paternal great-grandfather. For some reason, dominant traits tend to shrivel up and die with the Maenlarys family. One of the few obvious traits that was able to show up is some shade of violet eyes-- in her case, a nearly-black violet, but striking all the same, if you lean in close enough to see them. It might also take some good light, but once you see it, it's harder to unsee it.

She's well-built, tallish medium height, and keeps her hair relatively long, sometimes bound back in a braid, sometimes hanging loose.

character history
The youngest of five children of a prominent family, Rhaelle easily led a carefree life on the Faroe Islands. Oh, there was some not-as-great spots-- finding out she was to attend Hogwarts for some reason, instead of going to Durmstrang like a proper Scandinavian mage-- but Rhaelle waded on through. As benefits a girl with three brothers, she attached herself to her sister Shaera, and thought nearly the world of her gorgeous blonde sister. As also benefits the youngest child of the family, she grew close to her brother Daeron, the sibling closest to her in age.

Rhaelle's parents sent her and Shaera off to Hogwarts, instead of the schools they ought to have gone to. Shaera was growing worrisomely close to Jaehaerys, after all, and it would look better for the English uncle to make some allies there, to be able to visit him in the work camps.

In Rhaelle's opinion, the only good thing about attending Hogwarts was that she was doing it with Shaera. Though her parents were safely out of the island landmass and didn't need to deal with whatever madness going on there (the lack of a Mark and parents and grandparents who didn't fight for that country's most recent Dark Lord helped out there), Rhaelle as a pureblood from a purist family, was still treated with some suspicion by some classmates. It was, after all, somewhat strange to send your children off to another country when you were so high-up in your own. Rhaelle would respond with condensation, saying that a choice of school shouldn't be suspicious, and that if her parents had a plan, they wouldn't share it with a child.

In Denmark, however-- it was just another mark against the Maenlarys, that seemingly they thought themselves too good to send their children off to the school that served them, be it Koldovstoretz or Durmstrang. Despite the disturbing actions of her classmates, Rhaelle still enjoyed learning. She ignored those she had been told to ignore-- the numerous Weasleys, the Potters, the children of 'blood traitor' lines-- never mind that her mother's grandfather was one himself-- but she'd very much rather be a dutiful daughter than disobey for a loss of status-- even if said status would not have been helpful in Hogwarts.

Duncan then, became a blood traitor-- or something close to it, running off with Jenny Oldstones, and there was then . . .well, Duncan was the oldest and then he couldn't really be the-- well, a Maenlarys with a Muggle-born. Duncan was then-- obviously he couldn't inherit, though he was loved too much to be completely disowned. He married Jenny, and Jaehaerys became the heir, and then Jae ran off with Shaera and married her, shattering his betrothal to a good Faroese girl. Shaera, however, was a pureblood of superb lineage-- so furious as their parents might have been, they couldn't disown their children for loving someone from a good family-- especially when incest was pretty common in their family. Her Danish fiance's family didn't feel quite the same way, however.

When her family had to flee, Rhaelle found herself almost relieved. It had been sudden-- how could it have been so planned out? was this why she was in Hogwarts? She kept her head bowed, kept up what she could of the Maenlarys reputation. It need not be humiliating that they were kicked out-- her mother was somewhat English, and Rhaelle already knew English customs. It wasn't like she was coming ignorant, as she was already there.

Rhaelle herself had never rebelled, always been the dutiful daughter. But she didn't want to be married off, and she didn't want to see Daeron unhappily married, either-- well, it sounded like a good idea to her. So they also married-- Daeron and Rhaelle, that was. After all, if everything worked out-- they'd be in control of their own lives, not pieces to be traded around.

family history
The Maenlarys are a Norse-Gael family originally, who are extremely well-known and respected in Denmark; their seat is in the Faroe Islands.

The clan started with the marriage of Sigurd 'Snake-In-The-Eye' Ragnarsson, who married Blaeja of Northumbria (daughter of Aelle of Northumbria) sometime in the 9th century. Other than the kid he had with his cousin  he had seven kids with Blaeja, four of them Squibs. Three of the children ended up magical, and refused to live with their bastard sibling in Iceland, and settle in Britain. They were extremely proud of their mother Aelle's royal blood. After leaving home, they changed their names from named Aelle (after the grandfather), Ragna and Víf (the name of Sigurd's lover), to Visenya, Aegon, and Rhaenys.

The Maenlarys settled in Ireland, on Rathlin Island, where for twenty or so generations after, they planned and got power, played with a few dragons, made a few prophecies that somewhat came true, and made some very questionable marriage choices. After the Tudor conquest of Ireland (and. . .Henry VIII in general) made the place a little unsafe (okay, pretty unsafe) for wizards to be, so the family decided to go back to their Scandonavian origins. The squib siblings of their ancestors left descendants in Norway and Denmark so that was where they headed (with the dragons). There was only one Wizarding family residing on the Faroe Islands and dragonfire was a good incentive as any for them to move. Slowly, but surely, the Maenlarys carved a way for themselves into the thick of political power in Wizarding than-Norway, all from their seat of power in the Faroe Islands (late 1500s).

After a couple of centuries, the Maenlarys family became the premier family in their country and one of the first in the Scandinavian countries. They kept their power when the Faroe Islands became Danish in the 1800s, and were the driving force behind Faroe becoming independent. They typically marry within the family, preferring to keep the power to themselves, but occasionally married outside-- either other Scandinavian mages (there's a rumor about one of the wives a century or so back being Veela, or part-Veela which might explain the whole Typical Look and why most of Aegon's family looks so Maenlarys, rather than Desai or Patil), or even more occasionally, mages from other countries. Three brides in the past century have been foreigners-- two from important pureblood Gujarati families (Maya Patil, Dhanya 'Dianna' Desai), and a bride from England. Those matches-- two arranged, one for love-- all ended pretty fairly. (well, if you ignore others, less important parts of the family who were more racist).

"Oh yes, the marriage is going well, very well-- I think one of us is infertile, though? Or both, it really must be both, so there's a high chance of no children whatsoever. That's the only reason, really."
