Ask Ilana, and she'd say she has pretty common features among other Ashkenazi Jewish families-- dark eyes, somewhat wavey and coarse hair, an aquiline nose, slightly olive-toned skin. Which might technically be modest because she's pretty good-looking in a slightly unconventional way, but she really believes that most of her face is pretty common, and it was only luck that made it look somewhat stand-out-ish. Tall and very well-muscled, she draws the eye easily.
She doesn't pay as much attention to her appearance as some family members (thanks, bubbe) would like her to, because-- well, this is somewhat arrogant of her, but if she's hot, why should she do anything about it?

Despite what her full name and the names of her siblings might suggest, she's not one of those religious ones, and would like that to be said. After finding out she was born in a leap month (what sadistic genius came up with that? thanks, lunar-solar calendars and your methods of wrecking hell with two Adars), she decided to try and figure out how that happened, and finally emerged from her room a few weeks later, with bits of crumpled paper everywhere, having decided the mathematical equation of how the hell that happened wasn't full of it.
That being done, Ilana Goldstein dutifully attended Hebrew School, was dragged to synagogue on the High Holidays where she would have to not play Exploding Snap. Ilana was excited to go to Hogwarts, and had already brought all her things, even in the midst of a war. After all, education wouldn't stop for anything, even if there was a war going on.
But. Then Dumbledore died.
By that time, Ilana, about to begin her First year, argued that she needed to do something, needed to go, needed to learn, needed to fight, and attendance was mandatory anyway. Anthony stuck his oar in, insisting she couldn't go, but as he was still planning attending that raised a whole other set of arguments, and eventually it was agreed that she could go, because they didn't really have much of a choice, and Anthony would protect her.
That. . .didn't work out overmuch, thanks to the six years between them, despite being in the same house. Ilana was one of the louder voices, using her status as a half-blood with a well-marked magical history to consider herself safe. She was the older sibling and she hoped that that Anthony would be able to claim her siblings as his own if they came to Hogwarts while she was still there.
Needless to say, Ilana didn't have the easiest time of it that year. Towards the end, Anthony was able to get her into the Room of Requirement to hide out in, and when Ilana stood up with the Ravenclaws in support of Harry Potter, the Chosen One who she'd never met, Anthony Confunded her into leaving with the other younger ones. She stayed at the Hog's Head, listening to what fighters might leave the Battle, and though he had likely saved her life, it took her a few years to forgive Antony. She had her Bat Mitzvah a month or so later, but she felt older than twelve, older than thirteen-- felt like an older woman in a girl's body.
She continued at Hogwarts, pushing through the years. She made good enough marks that she was made Prefect, and graduated on time. She saw her siblings follow her, equally Sorted into Ravenclaw, and pursue careers as Healers and barristers. Ilana had never been able to stand gruesome wounds-- not since Hogwarts. It made her stomach heave. She'd learned to fight back, to use more than a wand, and she turned to Cross Fit to make sure she wouldn't be weak, never again.
She'd always had a talent for she had a talent for lying, for hiding, and she sought another job after she got hired at the Sweat Shoppe-- have to pay the bills somehow, after all, and she found she had a rather good urge to put things back. So she made the right friends, practiced the right skills, and began lifting things-- especially if they were stolen in the first place. Fair was fair, after all, and if the countries that they were taken from had some claim on them, which gave her all sorts of good feelings, especially when she was successful.

Like most Jewish families, she's a half-blood, as for many people, it was far more important to have Jewish children than to marry magical cousins. Jewish families (well, at least when they lived in the Old Country, as far as Ilana knows) are often more connected to their non-magical neighbors, thanks to the small population, discrimination, and the fact that Christians didn't really care overmuch if you were magical or not if you were Jewish-- it really only made it worse. It was best to blend in safely, and try to help your neighbors. The Statute of Security, when it was first proposed, was often flouted and ignored by Jewish mages for their neighbors, though Ministrial mages would often show up several days or weeks later, and modify the memories of the Muggles involved.
The Goldstein family, therefore, has around as many Muggle and Muggle-borns as it does folk born into magical families married into it. The surname itself definitely comes from Germany (though when or when acquired, who knows. it's not remembered, just like the shtetls the first carriers lived in). However, once ancestors to some degree immigrated to the United States, they followed the trend of the American mages- staying separate and following the law, despite resistance at first. By the time Queenie and Porpentina grew up, they, like most American mages, were wary of nonmagical folk-- which was distantly noted, somewhere in the back of their head how almost hypocritical it was-- though they did believe that Rappaport's Law was of importance-- well, Tina did a bit more than Queenie, at least, as the younger could be and had been pulled into the minds and thoughts of others.
Like many other Ashkies, Ilana's a European-ish (because it's really complicated, okay, when you're not really considered European for centuries by by the outside and inside and a lot of people kind of don't like you) blend of Belarian, Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, Austrian, Czechoslovakian, and German. Those are the ones remembered, at any chance. Still, it's not like it could be said with roughly any certainty that those countries had been stayed in for centuries, thanks to being both Jewish (and therefore not recording births in churches, and synagogues being destroyed) and magical (meaning that there was even more reason to stay away from their gentile neighbors). Either way, she's Ashkenazi, and that's a complete other group and something she feels closer to than countries her ancestors stayed in for a few generations.

The Goldsteins-- well, Ilana's parents, anyway, were solid half-bloods, with a generous mixing of magical and non-magical blood from the Old Country. Her father, though his parents were American, chose to get an education in Hogwarts, believing it would be safer, since Jacob Kowalski was nonmagical, and Queenie was a witch, meaning that in the country they lived in, their partnership was supposedly "illegal". To help the pair hide from the American Ministry's reach, Newt Scamander and Tina helped Queenie and Jacob to the Faulkland Islands, where the pair would go on to have children, alternating surnames as they liked. The children went on to have the choice of either Ilvermorny under the care of their Aunt Tina and Uncle Newt (under the name Goldstein), Castelobruxo, or to Hogwarts under whichever name they preferred. Save for their eldest who chose Ilvermorny, their children had a mostly even split between the technically closest Castelobruxo and Hogwarts.
Isaac Goldstein was the second of the children who chose to attend the far-off Hogwarts school, where he was Sorted almost at once into Ravenclaw, where he would eventually meet his future wife, another Jewish half-blood mage named Rina, who his mother did approve of when he brought her home. The pair married shortly after finishing Hogwarts, and had Ilana, followed by Noam and Lior.
Unlike Isaac, one of Rina's parents was living in Eastern Europe in the '30s-- and was one of the lucky children on the Kindertransport. Said grandparent was able to get with some of their family after-- their parents both survived, and they were an only child. Their parents didn't speak of it, and Rina's parent never mentioned if they'd had siblings. Thanks to rumors about Grindelwald helping Hitler, things were. . .tense when they married someone with magic-- well, that and wondering why more hadn't been done, surprised and upset to find out that Jewish mages had done whatever they could-- in both the non-magical world and against Grindelwald.
