Hestia Maia Carrow
34 - Female - Pureblood - 01/29/1983

Editor of Witch Weekly | Owner of Wimbourne Wasps

Appearance and Personality
General Appearance: Both Hestia and her identical twin sister Flora stand at an even five foot five, which neither girl seems to find enough. While both girls share the same blonde hair and youthful face, Hestia has a slightly dangerous glint in her eyes. Her hair has been recently chopped short and styled, another thing different than her twin's. Of course, they still manage to share the same style and face despite Hestia's insistence they look different. The witch has two magical tattoos on her shoulder from when she turned twenty; one snake and a daisy. Her sister has the match to the daisy- a piece of kindling.
Sexual Orientation: Pansexual (only Flora knows)
Skills: Hiding her emotions like every knowledgeable pureblood young lady- especially with her cousins running around. Honestly, she knows that she has the same genes and a few of the same interests, but she likes to keep it under wraps (unlike Alecto). Drinking copious amounts of coffee when under pressure, a must when you're editor of a pretty important paper. She drinks four or five cups a day, maybe more (hey, think Gilmore Girls amount). But it gets Witch Weekly selling and that's what's important. Writing and making spreads is also typical for her job and she claims that she's above average at that. She's thirty-four, honestly. Getting under people's skin... Mainly Flora, but she does tend to apply that to others. Hestia likes getting to people and seeing what makes them tick. Being subtle is another. She likes to be low-key when working because it makes everything far easier.
Weaknesses: She puts up fronts occasionally which can cause problems. She'll either seem like she's playing you (which... she sometimes is) or like she's a shy little thing (which she isn't). Flora is a major weakness, she would do anything for her. Hell, family is a huge weakness. They're all psychopaths, but they're her psychopaths, you know? She has a tendency to get pulled towards the Dark Arts when it isn't necessary. Often uses magic to solve problems she can fix by hand- it isn't that she's lazy but more that she thinks she's above it. So she isn't handy at all, can barely do laundry without magic. Also, that's what house elves are for. Hestia has a tendency to hyperfocus on details as well. Following orders (and just following) is another weakness of hers. She's the strong twin and rather insistent on it. Also has a soft spot for kittens and rum.
Positive Personality Traits: Ambitious, loyal, hard-working, determined, well-spoken, charismatic, thinks she has a good sense of humor... Bold and daring.
Negative Personality Traits: Aloof, secretive, spoiled, strong-willed (well, could be both a positive and a negative), bossy, dramatic.
Hobbies and Interests: Writing, her favorite thing to do. Absolutely loves Quidditch, spent her money on a team as soon as she had her wealth back. Batty for beauty products and wants to develop some more potions to help with that. Loves skin care, self care, and any beauty regimen.
Character History:
"Life isn't really easy as a twin."

Flora and Hestia Carrow (because at first she was mentioned second) were born on a freezing January morning. Their mother wasn't particularly fond or maternal at the start, mainly irate that the children were taking time away from what she wanted to be doing. Atropos had things to do, and raising two infants was not on that detailed list. She had expected either her husband or a house elf to help instead, but it had instead rested on her until a suitable nurse was found. She ended up doing the majority of the work herself; her husband was too busy being indicted for crimes from the first war. It took quite some time for him to be claim 'imperius' mainly because Alecto and Amycus were so insistent that these were there beliefs. It took quite a lot for the Ministry to consider it, but Aecus managed to get only two years in Azkaban as a joint decision. It was better than life but Atropos was still furious with her husband for abandoning her with the girls. She didn't take it out on the babies, but she did have a short temper as they grew up and even shouted at them for little to no reason.

Their father was supposed to be released in two years, but ended up staying for seven. When he returned in the 90s neither of the girls knew what to do. They were seven and sweet; they didn't like talking to people who weren't each other. Hestia always stuck by Flora, and she very rarely went off to explore. It was safer to stick by her family, even if her cousins were odd and she had a great-aunt that liked to curse and shout. She stuck to her sister and that was that. Although her family never grew they did prosper a bit when Fudge was elected that year. Cornelius got along well with Aecus, though not as well as he had with Malfoy. They didn't get large amounts of favor but they got enough- they weren't the main line so Aecus wanted to make sure that they were doing well in the end. He knew he had two girls to marry off at some point, he had to make sure they had money for that. Their next few years were spent being dragged to Ministry galas as Aecus instituted himself as the British Seat of International Cooperation- which meant that he spoke to the Minister quite often. During that time Hestia and Flora had their first bouts of magic.

Hestia was first, starting the beginning of her movement towards the 'first' twin. She was playing dolls with her sister when she wanted her's to climb a 'mountain'- the mountain being a rather large bookshelf. She managed to get all the way to the top without a problem. Flora wanted to join as well, but Hestia refused to help- so her sister started throwing things up, but with magic. Aecus found them a bit later in the same positions. He was appalled that their mother didn't really care enough to check up on them but ultimately thrilled that the girls finally showed their first signs of magic. It was pretty late for Carrows, but they weren't the last, so it wasn't something that he was really that frightened about. The girls received a pair of green bracelets that week as a celebration present, and such started their goals to get into Slytherin when they finally went to Hogwarts. It was the most important thing to them; that was where their parents were and where their cousins were. Hestia and Flora were young enough to look at Amycus and Alecto with wide, excited eyes, even if they were behind bars.

Right before their first year of Hogwarts came the Dark Mark above the World Cup and spirits rose in the Carrow household. While Hestia and Flora weren't sure what was going on, they went to Hogwarts with fresh eyes and a determination to get into Slytherin. That was where they belonged. That was the year of the Triwizard Tournament and the girls were a bit annoyed when Diggory was selected- and then there was Potter. Hestia and Flora followed the elder student's attitudes towards both, wearing the badges when instructed. Hestia liked how quickly the Hufflepuffs were to go back to their own, she admired their loyalty. Although she had not specifically been a Hat Stall there was a brief discussion as to where she should go. She was ultimately glad to have been placed in Slytherin, though, and that was where she found her closest friends. Sienna Parkinson was somebody that Hestia and Flora found they could trust, as well as a few other elder Slytherins. They didn't attend the ball because of their age, but it didn't bother the girls. They were more irritated in their second year when Umbridge got there.

Although the girls weren't rule breakers they were told to tread exceptionally lightly when around Professor Umbridge. Hestia hated how she wasn't allowed to use magic in the classroom, even if she wasn't too fond of Defense. She just wanted to use magic. The girls made it through their second year without much issue, and in their third year they were invited to join the Slug Club because of their father (and extended relations). Hestia liked the comforts that Slughorn had made for himself, and she gladly attended all parties. She was young and she thought that it was exciting. At the end of the year she heard from Amycus and Alecto through a letter from her father; they were back. She didn't quite understand how but during the last few weeks of school her family broke into Hogwarts and there was a battle in the Astronomy tower. Being in the common room she didn't quite hear anything, it was only afterwards that someone mentioned seeing Amycus and Alecto. Hestia was proud of them for coming back, but Flora was nervous.

Their fourth year was fantastic- Alecto and Amycus might not have given them special treatment but they did learn far more than they had before. Hestia convinced Alecto to give her a few private lessons and she learned some fascinating curses, while Flora dove deeper into books. They became attached at the hip that year, almost retreating back to when they were younger. After a few lessons with Alecto Hestia realized that although she loved the Dark Arts it was something she wanted to learn on the side, and Flora was relieved that her sister came back to her. At the end of the year the pair were sent to the common room to wait it out after Pansy shouted to give up Potter. Hestia was nervous the entire time; she knew that their parents wouldn't kill them but she was frightened that they wouldn't know where to look if they won. Unfortunately, they lost, and her cousins were indicted as major offenders and her father as a minor. Because her father was a lesser offender he was on work release, and Hestia finished out her seventh year before anything else happened.

She attended Lufkin in 2002 for journalism and had finished out her degree when Durant began his rule. Her father was moved into a work camp and her and Flora's possible engagements fell through. It didn't bother either girl; Flora bought a hotel with what remaining money they had and Hestia went to work at Witch Weekly. It was in 2011 when they had no more money; they were fined repeatedly for Carrow connections and for their father's help. Flora had to sell her hotel and Hestia was fired from Witch Weekly. She wrote on her own for a while, trying to get anyone to publish her, but it was difficult. She ended up writing under a pseudonym in order to get even just a little bit of money. It was a hard time for them, and Hestia hated every moment of it. She hated household charms and she most certainly hated moving back in with her mother. She though they should have gone to France when they could.

In October 2016 her father died in the work camp, and Hestia was furious. She wanted to act out and curse someone, but she didn't get a chance. Flora kept her from doing anything stupid, and just as soon as she had calmed down Ares and Anicka Wentzell killed the Minister and released Alecto and Amycus. They were back on top; their assets were regained and Flora went back to her hotel... Only after Hestia hexed the new owner into submission. Hestia returned to her job at Witch Weekly and was just recently made the Editor- a great feat considering her age. She's working to make sure that she keeps it, now, because it was something that she was ultimately glad to have.

Plots and Politics
What is your character’s stance on the recent takeover of the Ministry by Death Eaters? "At least we won't be poor and destitute any longer... I'm sure the cousins are thrilled. Me, though? I'm not sure. I'm just glad the right people are in charge. And it was nice revenge for father." Hestia doesn't want her family to take another hit, so she's holding her cards close to her chest for the moment. She does support their beliefs, but it's rather volatile for the moment. If something else happens... She doesn't want to lose anyone else.

Where did your character stand in the treatment of Death Eaters and their families under the late Minister Durant's rule? "Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. Do you know what I had to go through?" Her father died in the fire at the work camp, her sister lost her hotel and Hestia lost her job.

How was your character and their family affected by the reign and death of Voldemort? Ooh, it was a glorious time. Her parents supported the cause, her cousins were outright involved... Granted, there was more of an issue when Potter killed him, and it was rude of them to lock her and her sister in the dungeon during the battle. Flora is claustrophobic!

Family
Parents: Atropos Carrow (nee Slughorn)  and Aecus Carrow (deceased)
Siblings: (twin)
Children: None, thank goodness
Partner: N/A
Other Relevant Family: Alecto, Amycus, Acrisius, Lance... Those silly cousins.
Family History:
What happens when two minor lines coincide? Atropos Slughorn was the paternal cousin of Horace Slughorn, and she hated him with a passion. Atropos thought that she was better than him, but she had little social skills and never was able to gather up as many people as Horace was. While he grew comfortable and happy, she was bitter and easily irritable. Her parents didn't know what to do with her, she scared away every man that her cousin tried to bring over and the ones that her parents thought would suit her. It took a little convincing to get Aecus to come over for dinner; the man wanted nothing to do with the Slughorns.

They got along well because of their names, both being Greek and deities. Atropos was controlling but that didn't bother Aecus. They were engaged quickly when it was decided that they wouldn't kill each other, and their relationship was mainly based off of friendship rather than anything else. Atropos fit in well with the rest of the Carrows. They had the same beliefs, the same skills, and the same interests. Of course, she was hoping to have a boy so that she could end up with an heir at some point, but they had two girls. Atropos hated motherhood so much that she told Aecus that they were done- they had two children and that was it. Neither girl was going to inherit anything in the future but she was glad that she was done.
