general appearance
He, unlike his sister, inherited the taller genes of both their parents. He's around six feet (and still growing, much to his sister's dismay), though often seems smaller, since he-- it's not that he slouches, but he's more passive than not, and gives off the impression of being shorter.

His face is more composed of angles and planes than round curves, a trait he inherited from his father. One of the few things he inherited from his mother is his eye color-- a pale brown that he shares with his deceased namesake. He's been told he resembles his father a lot (that is, from people who actually knew him, rather than just having seen him in passing) which comes in handy when he tries to imagine what some emotions would like like on him, or on his father.

He has only a few surface-level similarities with his sister Amelia-- while they share golden-brown skin, vaguely similar noses, curly dark hair and eyes that are (very different) shades of brown-- they mostly resemble different parents in looks as well as energy given off. He shares barely any resemblance with his half-sibling , and the most with his half-brother Laurentin.

skills
Potions-- it's one of the things he could almost fit in with his father on. While his sister had learned it by painstaking rote, he understands it, plays with it, enjoys it. His jadda passed her skill onto his father, who passed his skill onto Atha.

Unlike his sister, who can largely understands Herbology in how it relates to potion ingredients, Atha does pretty well in the subject because it's a quiet calm happy place.

He says he's good at blending in (but I say he's six feet and likes bright yellow, so that's not too accurate)
He's pretty good at not seeming intimidating
Decent at putting others at ease
Flying, and Quidditch
Being a friend
Helping others
weaknesses
Languages: Amelia got the trait of understanding and splitting up languages as she moves from one to the other. Atha got English well enough, but he only has a rough understanding of Arabic. He can read it-- that is to say, he knows the letters and piece together the words that they form, but rarely knows what the words mean, unless it's words that he often overheard.

Assertiveness: when he was younger, he formed the idea that it was best for him to stay silent and out of everything, so he often struggles to speak up for himself. He's Hufflepuff enough-- it's easier to speak up for others, but still difficult.

his sister, his half-siblings, his mother, his stepdad-- need a pressure point? push on one of them

his father, his half-brothers, his stepmother-- when around them, he typically isn't able to say much, do much

character history
While he was still in his mother, it was planned his surname would be Zabini, so his father could feel like he had a temporary heir, without his line dying out in name. His mother, however had different opinions, and had signed both birth certificates before his father was told that his children were born, slotting each child into the family they would identify more readily with in the future.

His parents had had a. . unhealthy relationship, which is the best way of putting it. Indirectly, Atha can trace his existence back to the Second War-- when his mother's boyfriend was on the run, his mother was lonely and angry, and his father saw a way to try and get information. Feelings (or more likely, lust)  somehow bloomed and then blew to pieces in the so-called Final Battle where they dueled each other and his mother nearly killed his father. Somehow, a couple of years later, lonely or desperate. . things happened, and Amelia and Athazaz came along.

He and Amelia used to joke that one of them was planned and the other was, despite neither of them being planned at all. If that had been the case, Atha was always sure it would have been Amelia-- she was brighter, more outgoing, cleverer, more assertive, more opportunistic-- and she had both family names, after all. Amelia was tolerated more by their father's family, and made an effort for them to like her. Athazaz found out early that he was unneeded, and disposable-- if not for the fact that it would have been too dangerous to do so under Shacklebolt and Durant, that Athazaz as a half-blood son was useful in only that it had a hint of non Death Eater affiliated activities.

When he was old enough to realize the difference in names, his father had married a pureblood woman. He supposed the woman was nice enough as she put neither wand nor hand on him, but until she'd had a son, he was a threat to her line, even if he had no interest in either being a Zabini or having the same views as they did. As the Durant administration started going after purebloods who had already been trialed, tensions in Manzil Zabini became more and more, and Atha began to savor the time he spent with his mother, where the only tensions were between her and Amelia, not some odd five-and-a-half sided war where his strings were pulled by everyone around him. Sienna later had three sons, but Atha was sill the oldest, could arguably press a claim-- his mother was high in the ranks, and if her Bones son wanted to claim an inheritance as the oldest and acknowledged son, the 'Light' Ministries would probably help them out.

He had been one of the first Sorted in Hogwarts; Amelia was the last. He'd known her well enough to know what she would go into, and he knew himself well enough that if he didn't go into the House that stood opposite to that, he'd never be able to separate himself from her. So he asked for Hufflepuff-- not that he'd needed to. He didn't look at her as he made his way to his table, nor when she made her way to Slytherin. Amelia had never really needed him, after all-- it was only he who needed her.

He watched as she blossomed easily enough, making her own friends. They were scions of old families, families with connections their mother disliked-- and still, enough others in acquaintanceship that their mother wasn't convinced that Amelia would take after their father. Athazaz's friends were fewer-- he was the quieter one, the one who friendship had to pulled from, not easily dropped in the lap of. While most her friends knew they were siblings, their differing surnames and personalities led it to be more of a half-surprise-- at least, until they noticed how Atha would follow her around with his eyes, or how often Amelia would pull him into whatever she wanted, typically dropping him into a group of people to be friendly with.

They didn't spend every minute together; they didn't need to. They were still close, the half-blood Bones and Zabini twins of a Hit Witch half-blood of a Light family and a wizard of a family with Death Eater affiliations; they understood the other in ways the other couldn't. The Houses and surnames caused different impressions-- Atha was aware that he was treated with more favor by certain adults as a Hufflepuff Bones than a Slytherin Zabini was. A surname, a House, and it was expected that they followed in the footsteps of their respectively-surnamed parents. Amelia was the only Zabini daughter, the Zabini half-blood, but Athazaz was the only one left who was strictly his mother's family. The Bones had mostly all died out by the hands of Death Eaters and Voldemort alike-- his great-grandfather, his great-grandmother, his great-aunt and great-uncle, their five children who were all under eleven years and one still unborn, and yet another great-aunt. As much as Amelia had her expectations, he had his.

They were different, of course-- he could never fit into hers, never break himself down to fit the mold that she did-- but being a Bones required certain thoughts about honor, about death, about justice, values that Athazaz felt with a Bones-deep conviction. He was the only of two and a half of a House that faced extinction in near-every War, a House that ought to have died out centuries ago, and kept on by luck only. He grew up picking out his burial spot, with the gravestones of dead cousins that were his mother's first friends.

At twelve or thirteen, he suggested to Amelia that they run away, away from the families that weighed on them both. Amelia refused, and that was the last time he brought it up. He started drawing closer to Nick, one of the few friends he had. It was also around that time Athazaz began realizing that he liked boys-- it started with the flamboyant and friendly Teddy Lupin, continued onto Cyrus Lee, Jay Taar, Liam Potter-- but he left it quiet. If his mother wanted him to carry on their dying name that she'd spited his father for, she would be upset that he liked boys a lot more than he liked girls, wouldn't she? Oh, Amelia was bisexual too, but she only showed attractions with girls at Hogwarts, never mentioning or implying an attraction to girls with either of their parents.

His fear, however was assuaged a year later, when his mother mentioned in overly-casual conversation that she herself liked women. It being his mother, she carried on a bit longer than what was strictly necessary, in saying who her first girlfriend was (Megan Jones), which professors she had liked (Sinistra, Vector, Hooch), and suggesting that his near-step-father's cousin Helen was much better looking and better-behaved than Justin himself. All in all, rather much of it was far too much information. Shortly after that, he and Amelia began to drift even further to other parents-- he spent less and less time at their grandmother's (because there was no confusion that while the manor might be their father's in name, Lady Shafiq Zabini ruled it) manor, and she at their mother's home.

When the takeover happened, he kept his mouth shut in school. While he'd never quite cared who he was related to before-- he had his sister, he had his half-siblings, and his father had some scattered first Shafiq and Travers cousins that had never quite bothered with Athazaz, and that was all that was necessary. But now there was another thing that his mother and sister agreed on-- Susan sitting him down and reminding him about her mother's mother, speaking about the Notts and the dead family they carried around on their shoulders.

Then there was Amelia on his other side, who had somehow memorized more of their lineage than either their mother or (Flint) Bones grandmother knew, who remembered the names and knew their relationships to other students in the school. The Burkes, she’d said, had given a half-Black daughter, and her son had been killed by the dark Lord. The Notts had given a daughter of the main line to the Burke woman’s son, and then she’d became a blood traitor of sorts, and she’d also been killed by the Dark Lord.

(there was another argument then, of course, over which name to use for him.)

He began drawing away from his sister. She'd set her hopes, her status on the new-won side years ago, and he couldn't do the same. He couldn't say that he was lesser because of his grandmother's mother, couldn't say that she was any lesser than her cousins, couldn't say that he was worth any less than his distant cousins because of his name or his so-called blood status (it didn't even make sense how you'd say with confidence that none of your ancestors had no Muggle parentage, because he couldn't see how that was really possible), and he knew--

well. He knew if there was another war, if he'd be brave enough to fight, who he'd be for. So he might as well start the process of drifting away. Make it less painful, right? They had some argument-- over what, he can't quite remember, and he just. . stopped speaking to her. It hurt, to not have her to rely on, to realize that she needed him, maybe even more than he needed her. The part that hurt the most was Nick.

Nick was one of Amelia's best friends, as much as he was one of Athazaz's. He knew that with not talking to Amelia, he was getting Nick caught in the middle, especially when he refused to really talk to Nick about it. Because he liked Nick, liked-liked Nick, in a way that he felt like he could maybe act upon, could maybe if Nick's mother wasn't going to be in trouble as much as his step-father was going to be. They went to the end-of-the-term ball together, and Atha had almost wanted to tell him, had nearly kissed him-- and then he'd seen Amelia come into the room, and made an unheard excuse to leave. He missed the new Headmaster showing his true colors, missed the Death Eaters and Minister storming into the room. He turned sixteen during the ensuring lockdown, and spent it wishing that he knew what was going on with his step-father and half-sibling.

He spent as little time as he could at the Zabini manor that summer once he was allowed to leave, by dint of being a so-called Lord's son. As little as his father acknowledged him-- a handful of years in his youth, and a room-- it was enough to set him apart from other half-bloods, bringing him home early. When he was able to go to what he viewed as his real home, he found out that Justin had gone on the run with his parents. His mother and Justin had never married or filed any papers, but he was as scared for Justin as he would be if Justin had been his father. When Alexis Riley had been assigned to work for the Zabinis he did his best to try and help her out, and manage to distract them long enough that she could gather all her things before escaping. He spent most of his summer writing letters that he never sent to Nick, until The Letter--

The Letter that he and Nick had used Amelia as an owl for. The letter that had given he and Amelia a sort of olive branch where they'd direct statements at each other but not respond, the letter that would leave him and Amelia to still not quite-talking with each other, but helping each other out silently. The Letter where Atha had gathered up all his courage, and asked Nick out.

Shafiqs, Travers, Finch-Fletchleys by "marriage", Zhāngs, Flints, some Smiths-- as it gets more distant, the more families get in. Like most of Wizarding Britain, honestly. And a fair amount of Western Asia.

McKinnons, by marriage. But they're all dead now.
family history
His mother's paternal family was a solid English family. While the Bones were never a largely influential family, there were always Bones in Magical Law Enforcement, and previous to that, the Wizard's Council, in high-ranking positions. There was a saying in the family that sometimes would spread out-- but with mocking humor, rather than the pride the family took from it: "Bones form the backbone of the law, and become bones shortly after". While they more often took the side of what some might eventually call the "Light", favoring rights for all magical creatures, they had a strong reputation of being fair, and favoring the law. Though they often married other similarly-inclined or neutral families, Elidor Bones married a Burke, and his son Acanthus Bones married Leta Nott, who at the time was not yet disinherited. For all their more Light-inclined views, Bones were overtly neutral-- save of course, when wars came around, when they'd pick a side and run into battle.

In the First Wizarding War, the Boneses were all but wiped out, leaving two siblings and a small child. Amelia Bones was killed a year before the official start of the Second Wizarding War, and Aedric Bones passed of natural causes very shortly before the start of the War.

His mother's mother's family were Flints, who were proud of their placement on the Sacred Twenty-Eight. Brutus Flint, Athazaz's great-grandfather, married a Muggle-born women who successfully passed herself off as a witch of magical heritage. Truthfully, Carina Smith had been adopted by her wizarding step-father and had the same surname as him, so the "deception" had mostly not been purposeful. She and Brutus had two children: Argentia and Agatha Flint. Shortly before the younger of the two sisters started attending Hogwarts, Brutus found out what he perceived to be the truth, and killed his wife for it. Shortly after, Brutus was apprehended by Aurors and sent off to Azkaban, where he quietly died in 1993. His two children were raised by other family until they came of age.

The Zabinis are Italians of Maghrebi descent, who settled in Spain, then Italy, and fled into England following the Italian unification, where they thrived as a pureblood family, breeding for beauty and money rather than status. To preserve their history and culture, the Zabinis preferred brides and husbands of similar heritage, though when Azad Zabini married Zhāng Lihua, the pattern seemed to change, until their son married Demaordimah Shafiq-- though then the couple’s son married a white woman of English heritage.

Demaordimah (also known as Desdemona)'s branch of Shafiqs were a well-known lot.

It was talk of Grindelwald and his search for acolytes that drew her grandfather, Nadir Shafiq, to western Europe, initially. After all, muggles truly were the problem, and the Shafiqs were a proud pureblood family. There was no doubt about that. It would be a cold day in hell that a Shafiq dared to mix blood with anything less than a pure, and not face the consequences of such a heinous action. By the time the Pureblood Directory was published in the early 1930s, the Shafiqs had left enough of a mark via their involvement with Grindlewald to be included.

Of course, all good things must come to an end. By the time Grindelwald fell from power in 1945, Rayyan Shafiq, was due to marry Amalia Orpington, ten years his junior. But acolytes were being thrown in jail, and even a young Rayyan had already been heavily involved in Grindelwald's mission. The marriage was carried out before Amalia became of age, by her parents' permission, and the couple moved to Dubai, with Amalia finishing her studies at Uagadou. In 1949, they had their first child, Yasmine Shafiq, followed, finally, by a son in 1955--Amir Shafiq.

Unfortunately, this ended in tragedy. Amalia died during childbirth. Feeling the loss of his wife deeply, the timing of it all was too convenient. Amir was called back to Britain, with news of his father being released from Azkaban. Too convenient is a hardly an over-exaggeration, as he was arranged to marry Leticia Shacklebolt within the year. They were married in 1957, and welcomed their only child and daughter, Demaordimah Shafiq, in 1961.

The Shafiqs, newly returned, settled down in Britain once more--strategically, this time. All three of Amir's children attended Hogwarts. All Slytherins, naturally. And, in the midst of it all, they revived old connections. Made it well known to the names that mattered, the son of Rayyan Shafiq, grandson of Nadir Shafiq, had returned. When the Dark Lord began to gather his followers, branding them with his Dark Mark, Rayyan, Amir, and Yasmine were quick to get in line, though Dema was too young. They fought well, making their loyalties known within pureblood circles.

When the Dark Lord fell, too, it was not all that difficult to fall into old habits. Rayyan took the fall for Amir, allowing him the chance to get away--to France, this time, where his promised wife was conveniently residing. Yasmine, unfortunately, already wed to Amos Proctor, had no choice but to remain in England alongside her new family.

Amir Shafiq married Orianne Volant in 1981, as soon as he arrived in Brittany. The couple, unfortunately, had great difficulty having children. First, a daughter in 1984, Danya Shafiq. Then, finally once more in 1989, another daughter, Karima Shafiq. The couple continued to try unsuccessfully for a son. Devastated, Amir sought out his family in Britain once more, hoping a change of pace might improve their family, somehow. Sure enough, Amir and Orianne managed to make their way to England--just in time to join the ranks of the Death Eaters again.

Orianne got marked this time, too, and the couple was completely absorbed by the mission for purity. Once the dust settled, again with a loss for the Death Eaters, and Amir's father dead... Rayyan had to protect his family. Tired of fleeing, Amir and his family went into hiding--and it was during this time that Orianne finally fell pregnant again.

Desdemona's seven husbands were were all quite similar-- men of good heritage, wealthy, and of course, dead some time after marrying her.
