general appearance
Pale skinned, blue-green-eyed, sin-black smooth hair with a few curls. Long and silky, it slips through fingers easily, a waterfall of dark. When she was younger, she had somewhat of a prominent jawline (complements of the Averys) until she grew into it, and many would say she has a very fine jawline indeed. On the taller side of average, she stands around 177 centimeters (5'10), with slim musician hands, at times spotted with ink.

With excellent posture and rather combat-worthy clothing, she often gives off an air of command, especially when off-set by the Dark Mark on her arm.

character history
Roma Helene Avery (named for her grandfather and a second cousin or so) was the granddaughter of a deceased second son-- words that typically don't inspire much for familial connections-- but the expected heir had only a singular son, and at the time she was born, she was one of the few female Averys. She wasn't expected to have the mantle of Avery lordship on her small shoulders, but she was expected to be well-educated as if there was a possibility that she one day have to defend Avery pride every bit as if she was an Avery heir. After all, her mother had difficulty conceiving children and anything might happen to Evandrus.

She took in looks equally after her Avery father and Burke mother, and for several years, enjoyed a happy childhood in which her father seemed more and more pleased as the months went on, though he often worked long hours. When Roma was around seven or eight, her father didn't come home one day. Well. That wasn't quite accurate. Some friends of her father's returned a small jar of ashes and his wand. Her mother snapped it in half, and set out a report on her father, saying he hadn't been seen in a few days, and Roma didn't bother to question it. She thought she understood-- it could seem as if Arcturus Avery hadn't died doing illegal activities, or that his family had no knowledge of what was going on.

The Dark Lord fell later that month, and new words started spiraling. Death Eater, murderer, twisted, evil. Roma understood them in some sort of way, but they cut inside with every repeat. Averys were Death Eaters, which meant their little children were as well. Roma had only her mother to cling to, who was every bit as Slytherin as her ancestors. How could she know of her husband's doings?, Vivienne claimed. The marriage had been arranged, and he visited her little enough to barely conceive. Roma and her mother scraped through, as did Roma's father's cousins. Arcturus was proven dead, suspected Death Eater, leaving a widow and a girl-- it was easy to shift blame to him, and Vivienne helped do so. One Avery was as good as any other after all, and the tarnish that the Ministry had placed on Arcturus couldn't be removed.

Roma started out Hogwarts with a heavy jaw and flashing eyes. As an Avery, she was one of the first students Sorted, and she had few cousins her age. Her brother Evandrus had already graduated, Jasper was a handful of years older, Melanie two years older, and Adrian a handful of years younger. She had few friends, and thus was seen as cold. She'd yet to grow into her jaw, or her thick curtain of heavy hair. She was cold, she was different-- and she realized relatively soon another reason why when she couldn't draw her foolish eyes away from the Hufflepuff half-blood Tinks or Tunks or whatever her surname was. She found Marcus Flint amusing, Zhāng Gouzhi irritating, and Eleanor Selwyn. . .

Eleanor Selwyn was fascinating, that was the only way to put it. When Roma allowed herself to notice that, she couldn't unnotice it-- the way Eleanor's golden hair slid over her shoulders as she leaned forward to talk to her cousin Leda, how Eleanor's eyes gleamed through the fog of Potions, how something would shift as she read in the firelight. Roma was a girl entranced by a spell Eleanor didn't know she was casting.

She sent Eleanor a Valentine her Fourth year. Valentines were silly, soppish things, and friends often parceled them out to each other. It was no great risk, as she judged it, and yet-- the reward was beyond her wildest dreams. Eleanor went with her to Hogsmeade, and the day was one of the most golden of Roma's short life. Eleanor understood her, in ways Roma hadn't yet considered. She wanted nothing more than to stretch out what was left of the year on those Hogsmeade alone-days, kissing Eleanor, talking with her, and holding hands.

But they were Slytherins, mindful of reputations and duties and responsibilities, not Gryffindors or Hufflepuffs. They were Scared Twenty-Eight, kin to men who raised wands for the Dark Lord, from powerful families with lineages that stretched back generations and helped build the world they walked. They were young, and traditionally raised-- well, as much as fatherless Roma could be. She couldn't set what had been expected from birth upside-down-- but the side was functional.

Upon her graduation from Hogwarts, she married the man arranged for her. Ephraim Warrington was. . .distant. Roma cared little for him other than the alliances he'd bring her, and the son he'd give her. Ephraim cared. . .more, it might be said. Roma had grown into her jaw and hair, and what had almost looked awkward as a child looked commanding on a woman. He wasn't as cold as Roma would have liked him to be, and soon enough, he gave her what she considered his only reason for existence: Ivan. Where only Eleanor had been, there was another, and she found herself distracted by every little thing about him. It had certainly been convenient, and her days at Lufkin had been only temporarily distracted by her care for him. As Eleanor's belly began to swell, Roma felt a wild hope spring up. Thaddeus could die, Ephraim could die a few years after, and they would be completely together at last.

But Loraine was born female, and there would still be at least another year before Eleanor could have a son. Roma couldn't hold that against either of them-- how could she, when she loved Eleanor so, and small Lorraine was her mother in miniature, every bit as delicate as Ivan? She was able to be hired at the Prophet and put a busy quill to work, spinning out the stories she was told to, finding new ones of her own. A year later, Eleanor gave birth to the long-awaited Jules, and he was as perfect as his sister and brother. Four months later, Thaddeus died.

She distanced herself from Ephraim at nights, carefully and slowly-- it took him a year too long to get the message, but Roma was patient. She could wait, if it was for Eleanor. She wouldn't mind another child if she could bear one, but she would prefer no. . .complications. Thaddeus would be first to go, and while it might be best to have an heir and a spare, Roma didn't want to give him another purpose to live. Ivan would have a brother and sister, and a brother and sister only. They came around often to familiarize each other-- after all, when they came to living together, they needed to have grown up with each other. The years passed, and their children grew.

Shortly before the date he was to die, whispers and rumors starting flying thicker and harder and the Dark Lord rose. Ephraim was invited to a few meetings, and what could he do but bring his Avery wife, daughter, granddaughter and cousin to Death Eaters? Evandrus and his wife were there, as well as some of her cousins. She was less surprised than Eleanor was to see her there, and they received matching Marks. (of course the Marks were the same as everyone else's, but Roma liked to see them as matching to each other) They hid, raided, kissed, and Roma wielded her quill as carefully and as often as her wand.

The Dark Lord fell once more after the Glorious Year, and Roma and Eleanor were arrested. Others had died (Ephraim was one of them-- Roma had killed him in the Battle with a Cutting Curse across his neck), and the Marks on their arms made them enemies once more. It took too long to get to trial, and when it happened, Roma seized the chance to be in the Reformation program. She was still young, she was a mother, she was a widow-- she played all that she could and attended counseling appointments, forcing break-downs and keeping notes of her own from each session. She wrote for anyone, anything she could, until she was able to be hired back on at the Prophet under various sections deemed "safe".

Their children attended Hogwarts, one after the other, Sorted into their proper Houses. Ephraim was dead, and their children were being raised with the proper views, and while things weren't as Roma would have liked them, they were still almost well. Then Durant came to power, implementing stricter punishments and norms. Eleanor and Roma were re-trialed, everything seized, they were sent to the work camps, and forced to take up residence in Knockturn. It was there that they finally completed the most difficult stage of their dream-- they got together shamelessly, openly, rather than in hidden and locked rooms. There was nothing their families could do-- they'd had heirs and raised them, and were no longer in the same power they had been. Their living families adapted, or pretended to.

A decade passed of much the same, conditions slowly worsening. Roma wrote articles for herself, for her family when she had time or energy. Their familial connections joined in planned uprisings, Eleanor and Roma with them. When the Ministry fell, all five of them took part and watched with pleasure. Roma was awarded Editor of the Daily Prophet-- she had, after all, over a decade and a half of experience, a good slant, a true love, and the right sort of connections again.

family history
The Avery family is one of the old Celtic lines in the country, well-known for preparation and prowess in battle. When not warriors, many members of the family are strategists or spies, and it's not uncommon to be a mix of all. Nearly always Sorted into Slytherin, other than the odd Ravenclaw, the Averys are almost as well-known for their blood purity and Dark magic as they are for their fighters. Their words are Semper Paratus, spun off the reputation they earned in words and actions.

The Ever-Ready Averys continue to honor the traditions of their ancestors, and many are as fierce as ever. Marriage alliances with fourth and fifth daughters are given the same consideration as first-born sons, to consistently prepare for the future. It has not been uncommon for the husbands of Avery brides to rise to the eventual head of their family, or to achieve renown in their fields.

(FROM TORI)
The Burke family was one that people didn't often hear about. They were one that no one paid all that much attention to, and that was okay. Caractacus Burke was the co-establisher of Borgin and Burkes, along with Mr. Borgin in 1863. The shop, located at 13B Knockturn Alley, was a place that witches and wizards knew that they could take items and artifacts of rather questionable nature, and receive very few actual questions. The Lord Burke was the only son in his family's direct line, though he knew that his father had had a brother, so there were cousins, of course there were cousins, but they were all younger than he.

Knowing that he needed to continue his father's line, Caractacus knew that he had to marry. His wife was French, and she fit in well with the things that they believed in.
They bore three children: Vivienne (1941), Emmett (1942), and Clemson (1949). Emmett wed a Lange of Le Fay and Clemson a [INSERT HERE].

Arcturus was a quiet son of the Averys, ambitious and clever. The oldest child of  Romulus Avery and his wife Semele Dolohova, he was named for a family friend, and for his father's love of the stars. He was close with his uncles Felix Avery and Antonin Dolohov, taking care to follow in their footsteps. A family of the quieter Burke line suited his purposes well, and so he convinced his parents to arrange for the hand of their daughter, to have an inner hand in the door of the shop. His father was able to do so, though died before a living scion was born.

Unfortunately, the marriage was not as prosperous as it was originally hoped-for. Arcturus and Vivienne struggled with birthing living children, with miscarriages and stillbirths marking their first six years of marriage. Arcturus wouldn't hear of setting aside Vivienne, not with his cousin Julius seemingly secure in his status of heir. Finally, Evandrus Avery was born in the later months of 1966. He was not quite the first Avery of his generation, as twin cousins had been birthed a few months before to his uncle Tennyson, but the alliance felt secure enough, and his line as well.
