general appearance
Devin is a grinner...even though he does not have much to grin about these days. The bloke is a bit over average height, but no giant. (Read that as 6'.) Dishwater blond hair and those baby blues used to get him a long way with the pretty girls. He still thinks his looks do him alright, despite the rubbish of how things are now. Muggleborn and muggle raised, he favors muggle clothing. He never owned a set of robes beyond what was required for school.

skills
Cooking | Flirting--yes, he is convinced that is a skill.| Good with his hands | Reading | Theft | Fighting
weaknesses
Anger | Accustomed to poverty | Guilt over his sister | Aimless, devoid of direction or purpose | Short temper

positive traits
Might not like to show it, but Dev has a big heart. He will give you the shirt off his back (and not just to show off his arms and abs, but for sure at least a little bit for that reason). He is clever. Dev's mouth gets him into a lot of trouble, but it has gotten him out of a lot, too. He thinks really well on his feet. Lying comes easy. Stealing is second nature.

negative traits
Isn't his blood status enough? If not, how about that smart aleck streak that got him in trouble at school? Still haven't beaten it out him even with the new life he is living. Boy does not have the best work ethic. He tends to get into trouble and doesn't mind breaking the law. He doesn't believe the law has ever worked in his favor. He is very distrusting of the government----magical and muggle alike. Dev is fairly jaded, despite his youth. He expects the worst and so far life has delivered on that.
hobbies/interests
Do mudbloods get to have hobbies? Drinking, smoking, his long term relationship with Mary Jane, experimenting with potions (as in taking them, not so much brewing them), shagging, snogging, quidditch, and even though he can't get his hands on much, he still likes to read shit. He ends up in more than a few fights. He's a bit rough around the edges.

accomplishments
He did not die in Kolna or Pyxis.

character history
Devin was born to a couple who should have never had children. Both were shite. Da never worked a day in life--too busy drinking to earn a living. Mum liked the hard stuff. That was why when his baby sister was born she was taken away for awhile. Wee thing was addicted to heroin when she came into this world. No surprise that girl didn't make it to her teenage years. Health problems she was born with Mum exploited in some real messed up ways--try to use little Jen to get drugs, taking meds from the child that wouldn't even get her high, because the bint did not know any better.

Being from Hackney--he did not have a lot growing up. The borough is one of the most deprived, impoverished parts of the city. He hated being home though and so he would walk and walk until he reached a library. It was so clean and quiet. It was a good place to take his little sister. They were safe there. He wasn't much of a reader at first. But over years, he learned. He learned so he could read to Jen. She could not play with other children much, being as sickly as she was--everything exhausted her. Even the smallest things--Most of the time when they went to the library, he would carry her on his back most of the way. She was so light. It was nothing to him--but meant the world to her.

There was no shortage of unexplained happens with Devin growing up. He was always making things happen. His mum always wrote it off as just the drugs. It wasn't. When he turned eleven, the visit from a Hogwarts rep came. She didn't believe it all. Da had run off at this point. He did that from time to time. Sometimes he was lost between a pros' thighs, other times he was just drowning in a bottle. It was better usually when he was gone. Mum was easy enough to keep a handle on. She wouldn't get violent like that wanker liked to. Her vices kept her sedated.

His mum let him go off--but he wished he would have stayed. His sister died October of his first year. He couldn't even figure out what happened. She was always in such rubbish health. Without him there to take care of her--the girl didn't have a chance. Before he left in September, he had reported his mum to social services...but they didn't take Jen. Worthless sacks the lot of them. Govs never care about the trash. They just want to ignore it. Probably happy to have one less chav to feed.

Devin ended up in a tower at Hogwarts. He was sorted Gryffindor...he wasn't born under the right blood status or with enough ambition to be in Slytherin. The bloke never was much on loyalty either. So, the Puffs were out. Reckless and curious--those were his defining traits. In the end, the reckless won out and the hat put him in with the lions instead of the eagles. He faired better in the rowdier bunch than he would have with the academically committed, but he kept his interest in the written word and learning.

It was not that Devin could not do school...he just often lost interest in the specifics of what were being taught. While attempting to study for exams, Devin would often get sidetracked. He would find some tangent that held his real interest and end up reading all about that instead. Like this one time, he spent hours and hours reading about the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary instead of studying for his Care of Magical Creatures O.W.L. That got him thinking about the common ground that existed between COMC and Herbology--and down another rabbit hole he went. So, while at Hogwarts, Devin certainly learned a great many things--but the vast majority of it was not part of the standard curriculum. That meant his marks were never stellar, admittedly they were never terrible either. And professors certainly recognized that the boy was quite bright.

He got in trouble a good bit. Liked to dabble in the vices that were available at the wizarding school. A lot of the studying he did was in detention. Running his mouth off and not doing the best with respecting authority figures got the boy a number of punishments--but when darkness took over the school, he got smarter about who he did and didn't mouth off to. He was no fool. He recognized danger when it was in front of him.

Now, he isn't in school anymore--compliments of his blood status. The poverty he is used to. The being looked down on is familiar, too. The new wand might irk him the most.

family history
Janie was born to a quaint older couple. The pair were working professionals a few years into their second marriage when the girl was conceived. Neither had ever had child before Janie. Both had put career ahead of family. Julie--Devin's maternal grandmother--had been an attorney. She was just at the cusp of her forties when she decided she wanted to give being a mother a go. William--Devin's grandfather--was a financial consultant in his fifties by the time Julie was born.

The couple were very financially secure--solidly upper class high society types. They spoiled Janie to the extreme. She never wanted to for anything--never learned the value of hard work. Cancer came and took her father when Janie was only twelve years old. She had been relatively well behaved until then...but her mother lost control of the daughter. The drugs and the partying just got steadily worse. Janie had been to rehab three times by the time she turned eighteen and got knocked up.

A number of big blow-ups between Janie and her mother resulted in the pair not speaking. Janie would not quit doing drugs and Julie refused to continue to finance her daughter's self destruction. The pair had not spoken in ten years when Janie overdosed in the spring of 2017.

Unlike Janie, Cole never had a chance at any life beyond the one he lived. He had a deadbeat dad and junkie mom; his life was not that different from his own boy's. He never got out of Hackney, dropped out of school three years before graduation. The man has never had a proper job. He taught his boy how to fight and how to steal--good skills to pass on to your kids, right? Devin assumes Cole is still alive. He has not seen or heard from his father since a few months before Janie died. Dev isn't even sure that Cole knows that Janie is gone now.

This night had devolved from bad to so much worse. His mind was spinning—and all of him hurt. He had been angry when he first came outside, but that felt like an eternity ago now, almost like a different life. The boy who had ventured out to have his little smoke break was not the boy broken there in the dirt. Devin was not angry anymore. He was too overcome by other emotion to feel that now. Regret choked him---despair crushed his chest. His entire body ached unimaginably. Every part of him hurt.

Rabastan had seen to that. The Death Eater had put Devin through minutes of the torture curse. The physical pain caused by the magic had caused his muscles to seize and tense—that tenseness lingered, as did the weary ache that it left behind. He would be feeling the after effects of this for days…if he lived to see morning. Death seemed absolutely unavoidable now. He was ready to welcome it. Especially once Sasha started in on him.

She could have hit him—thrown dirt in his eyes. But she didn’t. She didn’t try anything physical. Rabastan had ordered the girl to do her worst and Merlin’s beard, she was. Devin was so hung up on her that he was glad. He was glad she was tearing into him. Her cold, harsh words seemed to please the Death Eater—and Devin was relieved. Maybe this meant that Rabastan would let Sasha go. He could take the verbal lashing. He could take anything—he just didn’t want to be the cause of something bad happening to the girl. He was the man here. He should have been able to protect her—or at least, not have done something so stupid to have gotten her into this situation in the first place.

It hurt him to hear what she said. Of course it did. The boy was bloody crazy about her. He couldn’t help it. He loved the fire she had—that edgy attitude---he was into it. He liked the way that even the slightest backhanded compliment from her could feel. Like when he had cooked huevos con chorizo and she had said he should cook more often. That had been a win. That had been her saying she liked his food. That’d been one of the nicer things she had said to him—and it had made him feel really good. It shouldn’t have though…

It was dumb to care about her. He was never going to be good enough. He knew that. He could have some purpose for her here, but not whenever the world was set to rights…She would leave this place and never look back. He was a kid from the wrong part of town and she was not one of those posh girls that came to the ghetto looking for some rough and tumble bloke that would shock her parents. She was better than that, better than him. All that they had was here---and even that wasn’t much. They really only had the nights.

Further prompting came from the Death Eater—and Devin tried to keep his face blank. He didn’t think it bothered Sasha to hurt him, but he wanted to make this as easy for her as he could. He wanted her to keep going. He wanted her to do whatever she needed to do to make this demented son of a bitch happy—whatever it took to keep her from getting punished. He could take anything. He was happy to be able to save her from anymore suffering in any way he could.

His eyes showed the truth though. All of him was hurting. His heart clinched at the sight of Sasha bloodied like this. He hated Rabastan intensely, but at least the Death Eater wasn’t subjecting the girl to the Torture Curse. Whatever she said now was okay—just as long as Rabastan did not touch her again. Or that was what Devin thought. The venom in Sasha’s tone stabbed at the soft bits of his heart. He thought he was ready, but he wasn’t. What she said—about what he had done—he wasn’t ready for that at all. His face morphed into one of shock and disgust. He wretched and dry heaved as he thought he might vomit. Had he really taken advantage of her? Had she not wanted it?

She was right. He hadn’t explicitly asked. She hadn’t said yes. She hadn’t said she wanted him…maybe he had read all the signs wrong. He couldn’t look at her. He couldn’t face her now. If he really was a rapist, he deserved all that had happened to him today and so much worse. The mental damage that Rabastan’s magic had already done to his mind made him far too vulnerable to this attack. His fists clenched and he closed his body on itself. How could he have done that? How could he be that person? He had been so lustful that night—but that was no excuse. There was no excuse. That wasn’t him. That couldn’t be.

His mind was spinning out of control as self hate wash over him in brutal waves. Devin was crumbling. He didn’t even notice as Rabastan pulled out a wand and Sasha got all cozy with the bastard. Dev couldn’t think. He couldn’t breathe. This was all too much for him. Then, the curse hit him again. His face jerked up and he saw her…Rabastan’s hand clinched over Sasha’s—but her holding the wand. She had a wand…a real wand…and she was cursing him with it.

He really must have done what she said for her to cast this spell on him. His mind kept reiterating that as his screams rippled out through the night air. No one peaked from any of the grimy windows. No one wanted to see, because no one wanted to be seen. To intercede was to end up tortured---The pain caused his vision to go fuzzy. His eyes clinched closed and still, he could see her: Sasha cursing him. He deserved it. He deserved it. He deserved it. Over and over, his mind reiterated that to him. The pain seemed never ending.

His arms and legs twitched and seized—his body convulsing as the dark magic coursed through him. The curse seemed never ending. His face shifted from vibrant red towards blue as he felt as if his lungs were collapsing inside. He could not breathe. No matter how he tried to suck air in, he couldn’t do it. Devin hadn’t believed that the torture curse could kill, but surely he was able to die. Eventually, somehow, air rushed back inside his lungs. As it did, he cried out, wailing in pain, as tears began to streak down his face again. Devin could not keep himself from responding to the torture this way. Sasha had made so much fun of him for crying, but how could he not? Seconds under the magic drug upwards towards a minute and he was ready to beg for death. He would have, if only he had been able to form speech, but his lips and tongue could do nothing for him. He could only wail in agony.

Then it was over….It stopped and his body curled on itself. Devin was shaking. His arms hugged his torso. Sobs caused his body to shudder. The pain had broken the last bit of self-control he had. There was no pride left in this moment. He was drowning in shame and self-hate. The last thing Sasha had said to him played over and over in his memory. He could only hope that the Death Eater would end him now—and this would be over.

- Hi! So being born in 2002, he would actually be 15, not 16! Unless you were doing DD/MM/YYYY on his birthday, and he was actually born in January! In which case, you can just change it to 01/10/2002. Otherwise he’d need to be born in 2001 to be 16!
