FOREVER MINE
OUTFIT | @carlisle
If anyone had told her that she was going to be putting on another white dress and getting married, Sloane would have thought that they were absolutely out of their mind. Marriage had never been something that she had thought she’d wanted. She had known that it was an inevitably. She had known that her father was going to pick someone for her eventually--someone that he deemed to be suitable, and that they would go through the motions just like… plenty of other couples had before her. Arranged marriage was growing… a bit more outdated in their society as time went on, now anyway, but when she had been fresh out of Hogwarts almost two decades ago now… well, it had just been what she had expected. She had known that he’d pick someone, or rather he’d have discussions with that someone’s parents. Then he would court her if she was lucky, or they would just skip that and go right to being engaged. Either way, it was something that she had known was going to happen.

But if she’d had a say in it, Sloane didn’t know if she would have gotten married at all. She’d had other ambitions back then. Ambitions of power, fueled by the Dark Lord being in power. But that had been short-lived. She was well aware that she wouldn’t have gotten into distilling or have the chance to own distilleries if it weren’t for the marriage that she had been forced into. She knew that. But it had still been a long time to be stuck in a marriage that she hadn’t wanted any part of. There was no romance in it. She didn’t have some lost love waiting at home, some knight to come rescue her from a bad marriage, she just… hadn’t wanted to get married, but she hadn’t had a way to get out of it. She’d just had to stick it out, and eventually she had known how it was going to end. She had known that it would end with her killing Ralf and going back home. And once she was back here, she thought that she’d never have to worry about marriage again.

Of course, she had known that there was a small chance of her father forcing her into another arranged marriage once he was out of Azkaban. She had never had children, after all, which meant that it would be… maybe not easy, but at least possible to find someone else that needed a wife and would take someone as old as she was. Sloane had known that would be possible, but she had never thought that marriage would be a choice that she made for herself. She didn’t think that love was something that would ever really happen to her. It hadn’t been a part of the plan--it had just been the result of something with Carlisle she’d started on a day when she had been feeling particularly reckless. A day when she’d come over to see Genevieve, only her friend hadn’t been there… her husband had. Normally, that revelation would have been enough for her to leave, but that day it hadn’t been… and that had gotten them here.

If she had left that day, none of this ever would have happened. They wouldn’t have started… a bit of an affair, if it could even be called that when she knew that she wasn’t the only person that Carlisle was cheating on Genevieve with, she wouldn’t have gotten pregnant… he wouldn’t have left Genevieve… none of it would have happened at all. It was hard to think about that now. Difficult to believe how much different everything would be, because now they were married. It had been everything that her first wedding hadn’t been--she liked that Carlisle had humored her on that front. Her first wedding had been to someone that she didn’t want, planned by people that didn’t know her or know what she liked, and no one from her side of the family had even been there. This time around, it was different. Everyone was there that should have been. It had all gone as perfectly as she could have asked for--a little instance of spit-up on her dress, but it was nothing that Arista hadn’t been able to get out with a cleaning spell. She thought she’d need to ask just what spell that was for future reference. But for now, Brenna was with Lucy, and Sloane had wandered away from the reception and down onto one of the paths. The gardens were as beautiful as she’d thought--it being inside was the right choice. The path led her a bridge and a pond, and she thought that was as good of a place as any to take a moment before going back to the party.

forever mine
all mine
Carlisle didn't know what it was about all of this, but he thought that there was something about this time that was just different than the last time. He knew that the last time had been hurried, and in the middle of a war. Marrying someone that was quite a good deal younger than him, but this time that was the case too. Sloane was a good deal younger than him. Only a year or two older than Genevieve, but Sloane was different. There was just something about her that made all of this feel right in a way that the rest of it hadn't. And it wasn't that it hadn't worked out before. There were three kids walking around in here tonight that were proof that it had worked out before, but there was a fourth that was laying on his eldest sister's lap that he thought was just perfect. Carlisle thought that tonight was about Sloane more than it was about anyone else. Even more than it was about him, and he had seen her slip out and make her way outside. He gave her a minute before he followed her in that direction.

It wasn't easy to get out of there though. He was caught by his brothers-in-law. Tarquin and Harland both had words of congratulations, and Tarquin had more than a few jesting remarks about sticking him with a baby for a week while they were gone. Carlisle didn't think that he really minded though. It would make Lucy happy, and he thought that more than anything, his brothers-in-law had that in common. They were both in this to make his sisters happy, and that was, now after all this time, what he realized that he wanted for Sloane. He just wanted to make her happy, and he hoped that tonight of all nights, she was happy. He hoped that she was loving this, and that it was everything that she wanted it to be. Carlisle knew that she had gotten to choose it all herself, and they didn't really talk about the past all that much, but something told him that that wasn't how it had gone before. That that wasn't how any of this had gone before. Whatever she had lived through before, he was going to do better. And he was going to treat her better than he had. Better than her first husband. Better than he had treated Genevieve.

They were going to do this better. They were going to do this all over again, and they were going to do it together. The Lord and Lady Rosier. They were going to figure out how to make that their own. How to embrace who they were, and what they were doing. How to live up to what his parents had left for them, how to make sure that Edmund, and Brenna, and James and Maddie all knew how much they were loved, and how bright their futures were. Carlisle knew that nothing was set in stone. He knew that there was nothing that he could do to guarantee that everything was going to be fine, but eh was going to try. No matter what happened, he was going to do everything in his power to make sure that she was taken care of and happy. That was all that was going to matter in the end. That they were in this together, and that they were going to burn their candles at both ends. They knew how to live this life to the fullest. They knew how to make the best of things, and no one could tell them that they couldn't. Not anymore.

Finally slipping away from Tarquin and Harland, Carlisle headed in the direction that his bride had gone. He knew that she had gone down one of the paths in the garden, and he took his wand out of his sleeve. "Point me, to her." He watched as it spun in his hand and pointed in the direction of the path on his right. With one last look over his shoulder at the party that was being thrown for them, he headed off after her. They wouldn't miss them for too long, and he didn't think that they were going to just disappear out here, they would go back soon enough. He just had to find her first. It didn't take too long, knowing that he had chosen the right path helped, and he spotted her up ahead on the bridge. The sounds of the party were faint in the background, but he could still hear the music well enough when he leaned beside her on the railing of the bridge. "Tired of the party already, Lady Rosier?" He didn't know why she had left, but he thought that a moment of peace couldn't do either one of them any harm.

And we were
made for each other

When Carlisle had first offered to marry her, she hadn’t known if she should even believe him. It wasn’t exactly the most romantic way to bring up marriage, but their relationship had sort of started off backwards anyhow. It hadn’t exactly come about in a completely normal way, after all. It had started off with just sex, even though he had been married. That was all that it had been and she hadn’t felt bad that she was sleeping with her friend’s husband. Sloane wasn’t sure if Genevieve was even her friend anymore. She had been out of the country for so many years, that the only friends that she’d come back to had been old friends. And if her old friend’s husband was clearly interested and she was clearly interested, then she had thought that there was nothing wrong with just shagging him one time. That had turned into more than one time, which had turned into all of this. Eventually, she’d had to tell Carlisle that she thought that she was pregnant. She hadn’t been sure yet. The prospect of finding out definitively had been absolutely terrifying, but eventually they had known for sure. And she hadn’t known if she could take Carlisle seriously when he’d said that he would marry her.

He was already married, after all. It wasn’t as if he could just divorce Genevieve and marry her. She had thought that had seemed so incredibly unlikely that she just couldn’t bring herself to believe that he would really do it. She had never thought that they would end up here--hadn’t thought it for even one second. Admittedly, even when she had realized that he had been being serious, Sloane had just figured that it was another kind of business arrangement for him. She hadn’t thought that it would end up any differently than his marriage to Genevieve had. If it was just a contract, if it was just because they were having a baby and it was the right thing to do, then she thought there was a good chance that she’d end up just like Genevieve. She’d end up sitting at home with the baby, while he shagged whatever witch that he wanted. Whatever skirt that he felt like chasing, as people put it. He’d chased hers, so when he got her, there was no reason to believe that she wouldn’t end up in the same boat as his first wife.

But she had told herself that she would be fine with that because she wanted this baby. She had needed a solution to keep the baby, to keep it safe because her father would likely kill her if she had a baby out of wedlock. She would take a business arrangement. She had told herself that it would be okay, that it was more than acceptable. Maybe a part of her had been hoping for more, hoping for something real after everything that she had been through with Ralf, but she had also known that she couldn’t be naïve about it. She’d known that she had no reason to believe that she was any different than Genevieve. She wouldn’t let herself think that she was anything more than that. Until she felt like she had been… until she felt like things had changed. Sloane had already known that she cared about him. As much as she hadn’t wanted to admit it to herself when she’d thought it was nothing more than some arranged marriage for the sake of the baby. But she did think that she had already cared about him then, and then it had just grown more and more obvious. She couldn’t hide it even if she wanted to.

She loved him. That was just not what she’d expected out of any of this. Sloane knew that this hadn’t started off normally, and that people had been hurt along the way. She knew that people were still whispering about how much of a slag she was, how she was a homewrecker--and she was well aware people would keep saying those things until something more dramatic came up that they could gossip about. And even then, it would probably still come up in casual gossip from time to time. But she didn’t care. She didn’t care how it had started, and what people thought, because she loved him. She loved him, and she loved Brenna, and she loved that he had let her have a real wedding in botanical gardens just because she’d had no say in her first wedding at all and she had wanted this to be beautiful. And now that she was here, she wanted to memorize every bit of these gardens. She knew that they were even more beautiful during the day, but they somehow managed to still look absolutely perfect at night. “No…” She said, with a small smile, before liking up at him. “Okay, maybe a little…” Sloane added, before shifting to lean against his side.

Forever

Mine

His life had changed quite a few times over the years, but Carlisle could admit that even he hadn’t seen this coming. Sure, he had been sleeping with Sloane this time last year, but he had been married to Genevieve, and he had never seriously considered leaving. There was no need to. Things had been going well enough the way that they were, but then things had changed. Then Blair had died, and that hadn’t exactly been a catalyst in his life, or he hadn’t thought that it was going to be, until it very much was. Until Sloane was telling him that she was pregnant, and until he was drunk, and talking to the portraits in Blackmoor’s portrait hall. Until Rodolphus had found him and told him to think about what he wanted. Because there was duty, and there was choice. Carlisle could say well enough that that was not advice he thought that he ever would have been receiving from Rodolphus Lestrange, but he had. And he had listened. That might have surprised him even more.

The fact that he had listened. And he had made his choice. He had made his choice the night that he had been invited to dinner at their castle, because it had been theirs by that point, whether his cousin had realized it or not. He had made his choice when he had gone with Sloane. And perhaps it had been Sloane that had been invited in the first place, but they had been invited together, and Carlisle could have declined, he could have said no, but he hadn’t. He had made his choice that night, and he was proud of it. He was glad that he had made the choice that he had, because now he had this. Now he had married her, and they had a daughter, and things were going to be fine. His older kids were here too. And he knew that Edmund had seemed to take it all in stride. That Maddie had been upset, but that she was slowly recovering from all of it. James was the one that hated him the most. He knew that. But they were dealing with that too.

He was dealing with it. Him. Because he was well aware of the fact that things were not going to be easy for them. A step mother, a half-sister. They were not things that they had been expecting, and Carlisle was doing his best to make sure that that was the case. He wanted to make everything for them as easy as they could. Things were not going to ever be simple. They were Rosiers, after all. Nothing was ever easy. But that was their way. That was all of their ways. Even his sisters, they had never done anything all that easy either. They had made lives for themselves, that didn’t come as simply as they would have if they hadn’t have fought for the right to be free. He had married Genevieve because he had been told to. They had married for love. And now… Well now he thought that he had too. Because he did love her. And that was something that he had never expected from himself.

Carlisle was not the kind to admit love. Not easily, at least. But here they were. They were married, and they had done it. They had made it. This was not traditional. None of this was exactly the traditional order to go about doing things in, but that was just the way that it was. Things were different now, things were going to be different now. And he had to hope that she was going to come through this with him. That they were going to be stronger together than they had been apart. He wanted that. For her. For him. For their family. For his kids. He wanted today to be simple, and perfect, and he thought that it had been. He wasn’t all that surprised to find her slipping away from all of it though. Slipping an arm around her waist he kissed the side of her head and let his eyes continue to survey the party below them. “Did you think everyone down there would be here to celebrate this?” It wasn’t as huge wedding, but everyone that was important to them was here, and that was all that mattered in the end.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Getting pregnant had never been a part of the plan. At all.
[break][break]
She had spent decades married to Ralf and making sure that she didn’t get pregnant. She didn’t like kids and the last thing that she wanted to do was spend nine months getting huge and not being able to drink because she had a little Ralf growing inside her. That had sounded absolutely miserable, so she had made sure that it wouldn’t happen. He hadn’t realized that, of course. He had just thought that there was something wrong with her—that her eggs were all dried up or something, whatever.
[break][break]
It had been better for her, that he had just thought that she couldn’t get pregnant after a while. It meant that he’d stopped trying all that much, and she hadn’t had to worry about it. But she had never thought that she would want to have a baby.
[break][break]
Even when she had found out she was pregnant, she had been surprised by her own choices. There were ways that she could have taken care of it, or she could have at least given it up for adoption. But she had told Carlisle that she was keeping it, and that it was not up for debate. He hadn’t needed to be involved. She hadn’t been trying to guilt him, or get money out of him, or get him to leave his wife. None of it. Sloane had just thought that he needed to know the truth. He deserved to know that she was having a baby and that it was his, but that she wasn’t expecting anything.
[break][break]
Somehow, that had all ended up with them here. With Carlisle actually deciding to leave Genevieve, with him proposing to her. Brenna was here safe and sound, and while she was still adapting to this whole motherhood thing, everything was… good. Better than she could have ever expected, and it was far more than she’d ever thought she’d have in her life.
[break][break]
The whispers about how their relationship had gotten started were still happening, especially as the wedding had approached, but it was getting easier to just ignore them. That had never been all that hard, actually. She didn’t care what anybody else thought. They didn’t know everything. They weren’t involved in it, and it was none of their business. They could whisper all they wanted, and the Burkes could glare. She might not have planned for it to happen the way that it had, but that didn’t mean that she regretted even a bit of it.
[break][break]
Not when it had gotten them here. Not when they had Brenna, and now they were married. Sure, she had to get his family to like her now, but she was making strides where that was concerned. Where she could, anyway. Sloane was decently sure that his kids were going to hate her forever, but what could she do about that? Nothing, really. They were going side with their mother over her, and two of them were certainly young enough to hold a grudge even when they barely understood the situation.
[break][break]
But that was fine. Maybe when they were older, they would understand that it was a lot more complicated than that. Maybe. There was a chance that they never would, but she could live with that too. Probably. For now, she didn’t want to think about that. “Not all of them…” She had thought that more of his family would be against them getting married and would refuse to show up out of principle, but that hadn’t happened as much as she’d expected it to.

forever mine
AND I'M SO GLAD
BECAUSE IT GETS BETTER WITH TIME

Carlisle wasn’t sure that he had ever really thought anything through in his life. But he was positive that he didn’t need to think about this. He had said that he was going to marry her, and so marrying her it would be. He knew that he didn’t have to. He could have washed his hands of the entire situation. He could have chosen not to disrupt his home, and his life, and his children. But he couldn’t do that. He couldn’t walk away from her. Because he thought that for the first time in his life, he actually gave a damn about someone else. He cared about her, and that was what was important here.

He cared about her, and they had a daughter together, and he didn’t think that either one of them had expected that when she had shown up at the door in the pouring rain last spring. There was no way to know that a year on they would be standing here, and they would have Brenna, and Sloane would be Sloane Rosier. But that was where they were now. This was where they were, and he thought that his sisters had taken to her a little better than they had taken to Gen, and he thought that this was overall a much better fit. Yes, he knew that it was complicated, and he didn’t expect it not to be, but there was a time and a place, and he thought that this was it.

This was the time. This was the place. They were together, and nothing else mattered. Not tonight anyway. Lucy was going to keep Brenna for the night. The older kids were going back to Westerlies with Edmund. It was going to just be them, and he thought that that was the way to go. He thought that it was amazing to consider that they would have gone on being strangers, except for the fact that it had been raining. If it hadn’t been, would they have been here now? There was really no telling he supposed. But he liked the idea that they were going to go through with all of this. That this was the rest of their lives. Because Carlisle had no intention of blowing this.

His cousin’s husband had been the one that had told him that he needed to make a choice. Or really that he had already made it. And he knew that he had. He had just needed to hear someone else say it. He had made his choice, and she was standing here next to him. Wearing white. “Oh?” He knew that there were people that he would have liked to have been here that weren’t, but not for any reason other than that they were dead. His father, his brother. He would have wished for them to be here. To see this, to know that it meant something different this time. Sloane was a choice, and she was one that he was going to keep on making.

That hadn’t been the question though, it was about who was already down there not whomever they wished could have been here. Because he was pretty sure there was at least one more name that she would have added to his list.
