When Somebody Loves You Back
@griffith
Davina knew that it had been… hard recently. She hadn’t even been able to really explain why she was feeling the way that she was. Griff had noticed, of course. He knew her better than anybody, so he was obviously going to be aware when she was acting odd--and she had been. She knew that. She wasn’t doing a great job of trying to cover up how she was feeling but it was difficult to just be… down, and sad, and just not really have a good explanation as to why she was feeling the way that she was. If it was something simple, if it was something solvable, then that was one thing. She didn’t think that she’d have a problem telling him about that. But it was more difficult when she didn’t understand the way that she was feeling. She didn’t know how to stop feeling that way, or how to feel better. Talking about it had helped. She hadn’t known if it would, but when he had suggested it she knew that there was no harm in giving it a shot. And it did open up a line of conversation onto… some of her worries.

His job put him in danger. She knew that. And sometimes she just worried about that more than she should… worried about Andi, about all of them. The last time that the government turned back to the side of the light, she had been on that side. Or at least, she had been close enough to it. She had been a pureblood, yes, from a family of Death Eaters, but she had been the Hufflepuff. She had professors and classmates that knew how nice she was and how much different she was from her family. She’d had the fact that she hadn’t raised a wand against anyone in the battle, and her family hated her. That was enough for most people to believe that she didn’t deserve to be punished after the war. She had been safe. This time around… this time around, she wouldn’t be, and neither would… everyone that she cared about. They were all involved, to an extent. Nobody was going to be safe from this if it went bad again. Maybe before… before Andi had decided she wanted to be Minister, she might have been safe.

But now she was in the thick of it with the rest of them. With Griff, with a good portion of her family. She didn’t know if they would all get sent to Azkaban if the tides turned again. Would she? Sure, she hadn’t done anything illegal technically, but lines tended to get blurry in those situations. Would they all end up in Azkaban? Who would take care of Ava Blair? Of Roarke, and Arcturus, and Brenna… if they all went down with this ship, the kids would be alone. And she didn’t want to think about that. She didn’t want to worry about something that might never happen, but it was hard to believe that it was all going to stay this way forever. Yes, Andi had emptied the Muggleborn housing and had sent them all home--but she didn’t think that the woman was about to up and end the registration anytime soon. Davina didn’t… she didn’t really think that she would care if she did. If ending it made people happier, and less likely to try to overthrow her, then Davina didn’t think she would mind. She just wanted the people that she cared about to be safe.

And tonight, she knew that she needed to stop worrying about it. She needed to. There was no reason to think about it, especially not at a wedding. Everything was fine tonight. More than fine, really. The wedding had been beautiful, the gardens were beautiful--and it was all… just kind of nice. She hadn’t wanted to leave Ava Blair at home and then she’d found out that Sloane was bringing Brenna, and that Andi was bringing Arcturus and Roarke, and she knew that there might be some people that thought it was a little silly to have that many babies around but she had thought that it was nice. And nobody here really seemed to mind, since most everyone was family that liked having the babies around anyway. Things were starting to die down, just a little bit. It wasn’t time to leave yet by any means, but she did think that it was time to venture back to the food to see if there was any cake left for a second slice. She thought that there would be--there was always more wedding cake. It was the point of it being so massive. So with Ava Blair on her hip, she examined the remaining options at the cake table. She didn’t want too big of a piece, but she didn’t want just a small one either, obviously.

Griff's OutfitTagged: Davina
when somebody
loves you back
Sloane marrying Carlisle Rosier was something that he didn't really think that he had seen coming. Of course, a year and a half ago, Griff didn't think that he would have thought that his family looked like this at all. It was something that he didn't quite understand. But here they were. The Yaxleys and the Rosiers tied together. Which tied them to Flints and Bulstrodes. Blacks, in a way that was more real than the connection that they had had before. Malfoys. They were all here. They were all at this party. And he knew that his siblings were both here some place. Kate had been helping Sloane at one point, and he didn't know where Fitz was. Probably off trying to talk to Uncle Corban or something. Merlin only knew that he had learned his schmoozing skills from their mother. That was for sure. He thought that there were plenty of reasons to think that all of this was going to come back to bite him in the ass. But his brother had graduated from Hogwarts this morning, and now they were all here. This was the kick off to their summer, and he was sure that he was telling their uncle all about how he had let him into the program.

He thought that he was going to regret that at some point, but it was either let him in, and know that he didn't really want to do it because he thought that it was a good career choice, just that he thought that he wanted to earn some points in the family somehow. But it was easier to let him do it, and hope that he was at least teachable, or else listen to Mother complain for ages that he hadn't even given him a chance. He thought that it would have come to a shock to no one if he didn't get bumped down to Kate level likeableness for something like that. And Griff didn't think that that was fair either, but he thought that honestly he should probably find his sister and check on her. She was likely to have drank an entire bottle of scotch right now, just to avoid talking to their mother. It was look for Kate, or look for his wife though, and as he turned around to scan the party he didn't see a flash of his sister's bright red hair at all, but he did see Davina.

She was carrying Ava Blair with her and heading back towards the table with the cake on it. He thought he probably should have known that if Davina wasn't still sitting at the table talking, she was eyeing more cake. He didn't think that he had seen anyone else with a sweet tooth quite like his wife's, and it was amusing now. It hadn't been nearly as amusing when she had been pregnant, and couldn't have any of the sweets that she wanted. Getting her to eat at all after losing her sister had been impossible for awhile, and then when she had started eating again, after Andromeda had jabbed a needle into her arm, and lectured her about how she was hurting the baby by not eating, it had been ice cream, and cupcakes, and anything else sweet. Until all of that had had to stop too. When he had found her nearly comatose in the back yard. It hadn't been the easiest thing in the world on her, and he knew that she still wasn't as okay as she wanted everyone to believe. There was something wrong, he just had no idea what, and she kept saying she was fine.

He didn't know what to do about that. He honestly had no idea how to take care of her, and that was worse even than last fall. He had been absolutely helpless this entire time. And Griff didn't handle not being able to do things very well. He had had too much taken away from him, he had lost too much time, to handle unknowns, and not being able to do anything all that well. There were just moments when it was too difficult to really know what to do. Moments when he knew that he had to walk away for a minute. Just go to the other room. Go get some water. Something, because he just wanted to help, and he had no idea how. He had no idea what was wrong to even begin to help her. And that wasn't anyone's fault. It was just... Hard. It was hard to watch her struggle with something, and not be able to help her at all. Heading in that direction though, he reached for the baby when he got to her.
"If I take the kid, you can carry two pieces of cake..." There was a grin on his face, as he reached for Ava and then nodded to the plates of cake that were still lined down the edge of the table.

when somebody loves you back

I will do for you anything that I can
Oh, everyday I want to do a little more
Worrying about everybody all the time wasn’t going to do them any good. She knew that. Davina knew that bad things happened every day and that there was very little that they could do to stop that. She couldn’t control everything that happened and she also knew that she would make herself miserable if all she did was worry. But it was hard not to. She had worried enough before. She had worried about Griff being an auror because that was just not the safest job in the world. It wasn’t as if she would ever ask him to do anything else, because that would be absolutely ridiculous. But she had worried. She’d worried that something was going to go wrong and that Rodolphus or someone was going to have to come over and tell him that he’d been killed on a case or something. She had been afraid of that happening, but she hadn’t worried as much as she did now. Heading up the office meant less cases and less fieldwork, and she did know that. But she also knew that Andi was in charge of the Ministry now and he was her family in the Ministry. Technically she had a lot of family in the Ministry, but he was the one that had been there to back her up when she had taken over.

She thought that meant that he would certainly be a target if somebody wanted to take her down and take power for herself. And Merlin knew that she didn’t want to lose Andi either. It just felt like they had so much more to lose now that they had more power in the Ministry. It meant that she worried nearly all of the time and she didn’t know how to turn that off. She knew that worrying didn’t help anything. It didn’t change anything. It just made her crazy, and scared, and she didn’t know if that had something to do with what had been going on with her recently. Davina didn’t know why she had just been… down lately. She knew that Griff was worried about it, she knew that he thought that she was acting weird, and she didn’t mean to be. She couldn’t even explain how she felt or why. If she tried to put it into words at all, then it was simply just… that she was worried. She was scared that something bad was going to happen to him, or to Andi, or to really any of them.

Life was going too well and she thought that meant that they had further to fall if anything went wrong. And she didn’t want that to happen. She needed Griff and Ava Blair needed her dad, and Duke needed him to take him out in the morning when she was too comfy to get out of bed. She didn’t know what she would do if anything ever happened to him. It was something that she just didn’t even want to think about. But it was hard not to, which she did think might just be contributing to whatever this mood was that she couldn’t shake. It was just something that didn’t seem fixable. She couldn’t stop worrying and she couldn’t seem to get rid of this lingering sadness and just… weirdness. She didn’t know how to feel better and she felt awful that she was putting that on Griff too. Davina didn’t mean to be but she did know that it was affecting him too. He was worried and that was the last thing that she wanted. If anything, that just made everything worse. If he was worried about her, then he was distracted at work and that put him more at risk, and that ended up worrying her more. There was no solving it.

Davina didn’t want to worry tonight, though. There was no reason to think that anything was going to go wrong at a wedding. It had been nice so far. Having it in the gardens had been a good idea; it was a place that Davina had never been to before and both the indoor and outdoor gardens that she’d seen so far had been beautiful. It had been fun too--she was glad that they’d been able to bring Ava Blair, and it had been nice to see everybody and just relax for a night. Being here reminded her that her sister-in-law still mostly avoided her like the plague, but even that was something that she just refused to worry about tonight. She’d just wanted to have a good time and of course that meant going to get seconds of the cake before it was all gone. Davina had thought that it had been Ava Blair that had been contributing to her sweet tooth during her pregnancy, but it had not gone at all once she’d given birth. Thank Merlin for good genetics or she thought that she’d likely be obese already. “I hope you’re not implying that I’m going to eat two more pieces of cake…” She said, with raised eyebrows, but then smiled and let him take Ava Blair.

When Somebody
Love You Back

Figuring out how to handle the now was what he focused on every day. They had to be ready for just about anything, and in Griffith’s line of work, he thought that that well and truly meant anything. Perhaps he was just more worried because the Minister was someone that he considered family. But he was worried about her, and her safety, and he knew that it was probably ridiculous. That she would be fine. There were aurors all over the Ministry, and other than going home, where he knew that Rodolphus was going to protect her, he thought that she was pretty much never not around aurors. Even here tonight, he was here, and his uncle was here, and he thought that they would be plenty capable of keeping her safe. Still, he always wanted to bring up the idea of a bodyguard. Just out in public. Now that the muggleborns weren’t nearly as contained as they had been before, he worried that she wasn’t quite as safe. Sure, she was the one that had implemented the changes that had made them freer, but she was the Minister for Magic… She would always be a target.

Griffith had gone so far as thinking about assigning them without telling her, but he didn’t really think that he wanted the lecture that that was sure to cause. If there was one person that he didn’t want a lecture from, it was Andromeda Lestrange. And so, he was just saving himself the aggravation, and the headache, and he hadn’t pushed about it for a while. He thought that if he just sort of snuck it in on her when she wasn’t expecting it she would agree, and then he could say that she had already agreed, and there was no taking it back. Because it was for his own peace of mind, and it was for Davina’s peace of mind, and he thought that if there was any way to sway Andromeda Lestrange to do anything it was to use Davina against her. Maybe it was mean, but it was effective. It got her to stop, and think, and he wanted her to think about this. About the fact that there were people that she was putting at risk of having to figure out how to live without her if she continued to be stubborn about this. Ministers traveled with guards. It was just protocol.

Protocol that she was choosing, much to his annoyance, to disregard at every turn. He knew that she was doing this her own way. That she had decided that approachable was the way to run the country, and he could see the draw in that. But he could also see the security risks. It was his job to, and for once in her life he wanted her to listen to someone that wasn’t Rodolphus Lestrange. Griffith didn’t think that anyone other than Rod or Davina had enough pull on her to get her to do anything, and he wasn’t about to go and ask Rod for help, so he would use the only weapon that he had left to get her to listen to him, and that was to use Davina. He would too. He would make her realize that she was just contributing to Davina worrying, and everything else, and he thought that it would work. Perhaps it was mean. But it would most certainly work. And perhaps it would help to solve the endless cycle of everyone worrying about everyone else, and not actually focusing on their job. Something that put them all that much more at risk.

Right now, he didn’t think that he needed to worry about it though. No one at this wedding was going to hurt anyone else here, and he thought that that was just the easy part about having family that got along decently enough to mind their manners. There were plenty of them here that would have rather been anywhere else than in the room with some of the rest of them, but they made it work. They were making this work, because tonight wasn’t about anyone but Sloane really. Carlisle, he supposed, but the wedding wasn’t for the guy. That was for sure, and he thought that that was evident by the fact that they were standing in a garden of all places. Not that this really struck him as Sloane-like either, but he thought that it was just a bit more Sloane than it ever would have been Carlisle. He chuckled as he took their daughter from his wife, and shook his head, “Of course not. I meant you could get one for me too. And get some of those butter mints on the other end, because I had a handful earlier and they were actually really good.”

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]If there was a way for her to stop worrying Griff, she would do it in a heartbeat. Whatever it was, whatever it took. She didn’t want to be worrying him the way that she was. She just didn’t know how to go back to being okay. Nothing seemed to work, nothing seemed to even help at all. It was frustrating, and she wasn’t sure what she was going to do.
[break][break]
It had just been… hard. That was all there was to it.
[break][break]
She knew that it had started when Blair had died, and it had just been a series of ups and downs since then. It had started off with a serious down when she had nearly slipped into a coma because of her blood sugar, and that had been a serious reality check. The last thing that she ever wanted was something bad to happen to Ava Blair just because she was upset. She had known that she needed to try harder, to do better, to make sure that nothing happened to her.
[break][break]
For a time, that had worked. She knew that she wouldn’t have been able to get through it at all if it hadn’t been for Griff. He had been very aware of what she could eat and what she couldn’t--and she knew that Andi had helped him with a lot of that. It had been a little bit silly when he had woken her up in the middle of the night to make sure that she was sleeping and that she hadn’t gone into a coma, even if it had been a bit annoying at the time. After all, she clearly had been sleeping, so being woken up was not all that great when she was tired. But she knew that he’d just been worried, so after the fact... it had been funny.
[break][break]
They’d had some highs after Ava Blair was born, and that had helped. She was just so glad to finally have her here, to be able to hold her, that it had made everything better for a time. But then Andromeda had told her--had told all of them, that she had wanted to take over the Ministry from Wentzell, that she wanted to be Minister. She thought that was when everything had gotten complicated again. It put the people that she cared about in the line of fire, far more in danger than they had been previously. Suddenly, the woman that was somehow like her mother but also her best friend was in one of the most powerful and dangerous positions in the United Kingdom--where the two previous Ministers had been forced from office.
[break][break]
And the fact that they supported her meant that they were in danger too, and no one more than Griff. He was the one that was in the Ministry with her every day. He was the one that was heading up the aurors, which would be seen as a threatening position to anyone that wanted to get rid of Andromeda.
[break][break]
She didn’t like knowing that they were in danger. It made her nervous, and anxious, and a dozen other emotions that it was difficult for her to pinpoint. Davina had tried to get past it--and she thought that it had also helped having the boys to watch, as well as Ava Blair. It had been a lot to deal with, but it had kept her occupied, especially since they were older.
[break][break]
But once Andromeda had gotten a nanny, and it was just her and Ava Blair in the house, there was time for her to worry more and think about it more, and it was just hard not to be scared that something was going to happen to them. She knew all of that worry was probably not all that healthy and while she didn’t think it was the cause of her postpartum depression, obviously, she knew that it probably wasn’t helping either.
[break][break]
She just didn’t know what to do about it. She didn’t know how to make herself better and she knew that it was worrying Griff and she hated that she couldn’t help that either. All that she could try to do was focus on the good things happening around them, while trying to convince herself that there was no reason to fear the worst every second of every day. That was easier to do at a wedding, thankfully. “Okay, that’s acceptable. Do you want a big piece or a smaller one?” She asked, her gaze still on the options. She didn’t want anything too big, but most of the pieces that had been placed on the plates were bigger than she wanted. “Butter mints? Really?” Davina wrinkled her nose as she picked up a plate. They probably were good, because she didn’t think Sloane and Carlisle would have anything here that was bad, but she had never tried them before. And she didn’t think that they necessarily sounded all that good.

when somebody
loves you back
Just appreciate the little things I do

One day at a time. That’s the only way that they were going to get through all of this. They had to take it one day at a time, and he knew that it wasn’t that simple. That nothing was ever really as simple as it sounded. But he could try. They could try. If they could just get through this one day at a time, then nothing bad was going to happen. At least, that was what he was trying to convince himself of. While also trying to convince Andromeda that she needed to walk around with a personal guard, like every other Minister since the dawn of time. Something that she had proceeded to tell him that her predecessor hadn’t done. Though, personally, Griff didn’t think that doing anything the way that Ares Wentzell had done it was the right way to go. There was too much of a risk. There were too many things that could go wrong, and he was looking out for more than just her.

This was a family. Their family. And he could see their family gathered around them here tonight. He knew that she wasn’t thinking about it like that. If she were, she would have agreed already. Putting Davina through that… Putting Rod, and the boys through that. She wouldn’t. Rod would be… Well, Griff didn’t know how Rodolphus would take Andromeda dying. Because he didn’t really understand their relationship. It was something that he had long since resolved himself not to ask too many questions about. But leaving the boys without a mother? Leaving Davina without a mother? Without her best friend? Because somehow, in a second weird relationship that made no sense whatsoever unless you were one of them and just sort of went with it, Andromeda was both.

Their lives were not overly complicated. Or at least Griffith didn’t think that they were. Btu he also knew that everything that they had been through in the last year had been enough to change them. They weren’t the same people that they had bene before. None of them were. He didn’t think that it even would have been possible for them to all be the same. He had lost a friend, and a sister-in-law. His wife had lost a sister. They had had a baby. There were four new babies in this family. They had taken the government for their family. Her family. The Lestranges were, oddly enough, Davina’s family. And for as much as Griffith was sure that things were going to work themselves out, the only thing that they could do was take this one day at a time. Because if they didn’t, if they worried too much about it, they were never going to stop worrying. They were never going to pull their heads up out of the sand long enough to actually do anything about it.

If there were some way that they could pull this together, if there were some way that he could make it easier, he would do it. He would make this easier on their family. He would make this easier on his wife. But Griff wasn’t sure that he knew how to do that. He wasn’t sure that any of this was going to be as easy as he would have liked it to be. None of them knew what they were doing. There wasn’t a plan for this. The only thing that he could do, would be to try and pull it all back together again. They were going to have to do something, to try, something, and he didn’t know exactly what yet. “Whatever you get, I’m sure I’ll eat whatever you don’t finish too.” He knew her. She had a sweet tooth. But she also had the stomach of a bird sometimes. “Yes, woman. Butter mints. They are great.” He chuckled, and walked away, bouncing Ava on his arm as he carried her back towards the table where he had left theirs, and Andromeda and Rodolphus’s things.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Weddings were nice.
[break][break]
She was happy to have something to do that was only good. It certainly gotten her mind off of everything else and she could use that every once in a while. Davina knew that a lot of her worries were unwarranted, and that it was worrying Griff that something was off with her. But it was just difficult. She didn’t know how to get him to stop worrying. Feeling better would probably be a good start but that was easier said than done. She hadn’t had the easiest of pregnancies—getting gestational diabetes had been proof of that. But then there had been the depression that had come after, and she knew that was still what she was trying to get past.
[break][break]
Davina wanted it to be easier. Merlin. She wanted more than just one baby, and she didn’t want Griff thinking that this had been too hard on her to do this again. Davina didn’t think that he was thinking that now, but the longer that she wasn’t okay, the more likely it was that he’d start down that train of thought.
[break][break]
Truly, she had no reason to be anything other than happy. She was finally married to the only man that she had ever loved. She had a baby of her own, when she had always wanted a lot of kids. They were happy. There was no reason for her to be feeling the way that she had been, but unfortunately, logic didn’t seem to have much to do with it. As much as she wanted to be okay, it had been difficult to turn that into a reality.
[break][break]
But tonight was a good night. Carlisle and Sloane were married, and she hoped that meant that they could put all of the unpleasantness and whispers about how their relationship had come to pass in the past. Surely, they would all find something new to talk about. There was always something happening in their circles.

She was sure that someone would offend someone else in the future. By doing what, she was unsure, but it was always something. Davina wasn’t going to act like what Carlisle and Sloane had did was all right, because she could never even imagine cheating, or being the person that helped someone else cheat. But she also knew that being in the situation was a lot different than looking in on it. Davina knew that if she had met Griff again and he had been married, and she’d had the choice to have him a little bit or not have him at all, she likely would have ended up doing the same thing. Even if that meant that she’d never get to marry him or be with him for real.

Luckily, she hadn’t had to worry about that. She had just gotten out of the relationship with Charlie, and she hadn’t been sure what to do next. Andromeda had done the rest. She hadn’t asked her to or anything like that, but it had happened nonetheless. And now they were here. Her life had changed immeasurably over the last year, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. She couldn’t imagine it any other way, at this point.

Shaking her head at his words, she decided she’d get two that were just about the same size. He was right that he’d likely end up eating the rest of hers anyway, so she figured she might as well get a big enough piece for him to have plenty leftover. “You’re on your own there,” she said, grabbing a couple of butter mints and adding them to his plate, before following him back toward their table.

WHEN SOMEBODY
LOVES YOU BACK
JUST APPRECIATE THE LITTLE THINGS I DO

He knew that there was nothing simple right now. Griff was well aware that no matter how things looked from the outside they were still fighting for every moment of all of this. They were still fighting for what they had, and what they wanted. They were fighting for normal every day. Because there was a battle raging on inside of his wife, and he didn’t know what to do about it. He didn’t know how to help, or if anything was actually going to help. He didn’t know much of anything at all. And he was certain that it was all going to be a lot more complicated than she let on.

Because he was worried, and he would always be worried. Even tonight, when they were joking about cake, and laughing, and having a decent enough time at this wedding. It was always there. The worry. The underlying feeling that there was something wrong, and that he couldn’t do anything about it. It was an overall feeling in this family. That he was powerless to do anything about. That he wasn’t good enough to help, and he knew that that wasn’t the case. But there was really nothing that he could do. There was no way to help her fight this. He just had to let her do it.

And he didn’t like that. She was his wife. She was the mother of his child. And he was sure that he wanted what was best for her. He had loved her for a long time, even when she hadn’t been his to love. And he wanted her to be okay. The last year hadn’t been easy on her, and he knew that, but he wanted to do what he could to help her. And if that meant that tonight they were going to just act normal, then that was what he would do. Griffith could do that. He could be normal, and he thought that she could appreciate that.

It was just one of the many things to appreciate tonight, and he knew that this was a good thing. That they were finally going to all be happy. Or at least happily married. He didn’t think that there was any reason to believe that they were all happy all of the time. But they were working on that, they were all working on it, and he didn’t know if it was just him, or if they all realized how strange their relationships had started off.

He was mulling over that thought as he carried their daughter back towards their table and sat down with her on his lap. Waiting for Davina to join him he looked out over the group of people that were all gathered around them. The fact that there were two diaper bags at this table. That his cousin’s little daughter was dancing on the toes of one of Carlisle’s nephews. That there was life, and hope around them again. Even if things had been bad for a while, they were okay again now. They were getting better. “You know…” He waited for her to sit down next to him before taking one of the mints she had gotten, “We’re probably the most traditional starting couple out of our weird little family. And we’re together now because Andromeda set us up.”
