this one's for the girls
Who love without holding back

Who dream with everything they have
A year ago, she had been sitting on a different beach. A year ago, she had only had five children. A year ago, she hadn't thought that a year from then, she would have been taking his name. She hadn't thought that she would be standing here, watching the waves roll in, holding their youngest child on her hip. The twins had never been a part of the plan. Anička didn't know what had happened there, what sort of divine intervention had decided that her birth control potion was going to stop working, that she was going to ask him to get her out of there, and they were going to come back from Hawaii with a whole lot more than they left with... They were parents, and they were lovers, and somewhere along the way she was pretty sure that he had become her best friend. She got to marry her best friend. And she didn't think that was something that a lot of people actually got to say. People talked about it, they wished for it, but tomorrow... Tomorrow she was going to do it.

And she knew that she had been nervous. Anička had been nervous for days. All week she had thought that she was going to throw up just thinking about it, but now they were here. And almost everyone was here. Nick and Ireland were coming tomorrow, after the Tornados game, and she knew that LJ and Caerus were coming with them. But the people that mattered most right now, the people that she wanted to be around the most today, were her children. And she knew that the bond that she had with Philip was not the same. She didn't quite know how to act around Philip sometimes. He treated her like she was fragile, but not like glass... He treated her with the fragility of a bomb, and she didn't know what to think about that. It was something that she knew he didn't mean to do, but it was telling all the same, she was his matka, and she always would be, but he didn't need her, not the way that he used to. And he didn't want her, she knew that, not the same way that he wanted Malcolm to pay attention to him.

Bonding with Izák was different too. He would never know a time when his parents weren't married. He would never know any different than what was going to be after tomorrow. But the girls. Her girls. They would know. Their lives were changing again too, and she wanted them to know, to always know, that she was their matka first. That they could always come to her, to seek her out, to find answers to their problems. She would help them, she would always help them. And Pippa... God only knew how much she wanted Pippa. How much she wanted to be her matka too. Her name was with everyone else's. Between Philip and Izák, right there on Anička's ribcage. All of them, all eight of them, and their birthdays. All of her children would forever be parts of her in different ways, and she in them. The nurturing that came so naturally to Eléanora. The wildness that she wished she would have been brave enough to possess at her age in Theodora. The fire, and the passion, and the stubbornness that looked back at her through Constance's eyes. The reservations, the composure, the resilience, that she saw in Temperance. It was all her. It was all shining back at her, out of her daughters' eyes.

She had to wonder what Evangeliná was going to get? What part of her would this tiny baby come to manifest? Was it possible to give something to Pippa? Some mannerism, some belief, something? Anička didn't know. She wasn't entirely sure about any of it, but she thought that she wanted to find out. She wanted to find out what she could be, and who she could be, for her children. Standing on the deck, looking out at the ocean, she could hear them all behind her. Malcolm and the boys, and everyone else in the house. They had rented a second island, but she knew that everyone that was here already was here tonight. This was, for all intents and purposes, their rehearsal dinner. She was getting married tomorrow, and she was ready. It had taken her until now, until standing out here on this deck, holding her little girl, to realize that she really was ready... They were already a family. They had been family long before there was a ring on her hand, long before she had agreed to him changing her name. They were a family, and this weekend was all about this family. Her family.

Constance hadn’t expected her matka’s wedding to be a destination wedding, but she wasn’t complaining. Getting out of England for a little while was exactly what she had needed--and coming on Friday with Liam had made it even better. She’d had a conversation earlier in that week with her matka where she had given her some… advice, on something that she had grown up knowing that she wasn’t supposed to do until she was married. But since her matka had met Malcolm and since she’d had the twins, she had mellowed out some and apparently she had thought that it was going to be okay. She had to have, otherwise she wouldn’t have given her that kind of advice to begin with. And Constance really did think that it was going to be okay. If she didn’t think that she was going to be with Liam for the rest of their lives, then she wouldn’t even be trying it. It wasn’t as if she wanted to completely throw all of the rules out the window. But if she already thought that she was going to probably marry him, then what was the difference between now and a year or two or however long it took?

She just didn’t think that there was a point in waiting until they were married if they were going to get there eventually. And she hoped that they would--she thought that they would. He had mentioned having her forever, after all, so she had to think that he was thinking about that too. So she had decided to take her matka’s advice the night before and it had… well, everyone had said that it wasn’t going to be perfect and it hadn’t been perfect. But it had been good. Great, even. And she’d had to spend most of the day today trying to keep from thinking about it or she thought that her matka or someone was going to know that something was up. Merlin forbid if her strýc did and decided to peek into her thoughts. She didn’t need any of that, so she’d had done her best to not think about it at all and to act like nothing had happened. Just because her matka had given her advice that implied she was okay with it, didn’t mean that she would want to hear about it now that it had actually happened. In fact, she thought that was probably the last thing that her matka needed to hear about the day before her wedding.

So, she was just not going to think about it. That was what she kept on telling herself at least. She was pretty sure that Liam was doing his best not to think about it either, but she didn’t know if he was doing a very good job. Or she wasn’t. Every time that she looked at him, it felt like one of them wasn’t doing a good job at keeping it off of their faces. Constance thought that it was probably her because this whole situation was new to her but not to him. He would probably have an easier time of acting normal than she would, but no one had asked any questions yet. No one had said that she was acting strange or anything, so she had to think that was a good start. Constance had no idea if that was something that she’d be able to keep up indefinitely, but it was better than someone immediately thinking that she was hiding something. Now it was all a matter of keeping it that way. Hopefully Ella or her strýc or her matka didn’t catch on. If anyone was going to, she thought that it would be one of them. She definitely didn’t need that to happen.

Everybody was here now and, of course, they were on her matka’s island and not the one that they would be staying on for the rest of the trip. The house was loud with so many people in it, so she thought that she’d grab a drink and head outside for a little while. There was just a lot going on inside, and there had to be some kind of drama too of course. Malcolm’s brother had just gotten caught helping a Muggleborn hide from the Ministry so he and Malcolm’s other brother were barely speaking. She supposed there could be worse drama, but obviously there had to be some. That was just how it worked. But she thought that this drama was at least relatively ignorable since they weren’t yelling at each other or fighting, they were just barely talking. After concocting a quick mimosa in the kitchen, Constance headed outside to see her matka standing on the desk with Eve. “Taking a break from the chaos?” She asked, as she leaned against the railing next to her.

Livin' on on dreams
+ spaghetti-o's,
Wonderin' where your
life is gonna go

Matka was getting married.

Finally.

Thea had always been the first one to tease their mother, especially about Malcolm. She remembered asking about their wedding back when Ella and Elliot were going to tie the knot. Of course, back then, Thea had been imagining a hell of a party with everyone who was anyone. Now, she didn’t mind the idea of a private, intimate ceremony on the beaches of Africa. She liked it better this way — she knew Matka did, too. It was strange for Thea, especially since Táta’s death felt so…fresh, still. But she knew better than to dwell. She knew better. Thea was happy for her mother. She was happy for Malcolm. And she was happy about her new family. Always the most important thing to her, Thea knew that tomorrow, their family was expanding. She’d have a new sister to care for, new uncles, new cousins. She wondered if she would feel the same way about them that she did about her own flesh and blood. Pippa, of course, but the others. Uncle Lester sounded weird. Dorian sounded even weirder.

It seemed like changes were all around them.

The last issue of HOME had featured an entire spread on Razzmatazz, of Thea’s own accord. It seemed like her mother was letting her have more say in what went into the magazine (that, or she was so overwhelmed with the idea of the wedding that she let anything fly that issue). Thea was proud of her work and she hoped that this was the beginning of something. She had high hopes of getting famous. Not for rocking out at every Wrock concert she could go to, but for her photographs. One day, she wanted to have galleries dedicated to just her work. Beautiful photoshoots and candids that were revered among the greats. She had dreams and if Matka could make hers come true, that gave her hope that hers could too.

Thea liked to keep busy with her work…especially because it meant she didn’t dwell on what she’d done in the past. When she was pouring her heart and soul into her work, she couldn’t think about what had happened with Felix Avery. She couldn’t think about the marriage she’d nearly destroyed or the baby that she’d left practically fatherless. When she was working, she couldn’t think about how she’d nearly lost her necklace or Søren. She couldn’t think about anything but her lens and the shot she was about to snap.

Like this one of her mother and two sisters. Constance, Matka, and Eve looked like a vision silhouetted against the sun on the deck.
“Smile, Rodina,” she said, taking a photo and letting her camera fall back into place around her neck. “What are you talking about, Con, chaos follows wherever we go. There is no escape,” she joked with a roll of her eyes. Thea reached out and pinched at Eve’s cheeks. “Happy wedding eve, Matka.”

[attr="class","thousandwords"]This was a good thing. Ella thought that it was a good thing that Matka and Malcolm were getting married. She wanted her matka to be happy. She wanted all of them to be happy. That, more than anything else, was what Ella wanted. She wanted them all to marry for love. And to find the sort of happiness that she thought seemed to radiate off of Matka when she was around Malcolm. She wanted that for all of them. She wanted them to have everything that they could have ever wanted. Thea, and Constance, and Temperance, and Pippa, and Eve. She wanted that for her sisters. She wanted that for her brothers too. She wanted that for Nick, and Philip, and Izák. Those were the things that she wanted. She wanted happiness, and she wanted ease. And she wanted everything to work out the way that it was supposed to. Ella didn’t know how they were going to get that. How they were going to make sure that they all ended up happy. But she was going to give it a shot. Being happy didn’t always come with being who they were, and she knew that. But she thought that even if it took a second time around, she was glad that Matka was there.

She was glad that they got to be here to see it. And here being Africa? Well that had been a surprise. Ella had thought maybe Hawaii. That had seemed like it almost would have been comically awkward to try and explain to Babička, and Talia. That would have been something that she didn’t think they would have even been able to describe to people that hadn’t been there. She didn’t think that she would have wanted to watch Matka’s face as she tried to remain neutral, but Malcolm’s as he tried not to laugh might have been worth it. They would never know though, because Africa had been the choice, not Hawaii, and Ella thought that it was sort of fitting. A barefoot wedding on a beach seemed like the kind of thing that a princess didn’t do, and it made her realize that this wasn’t about a princess at all. This was about Matka. And it was about Malcolm. And it was about their family. This was their family now. And it was one that she didn’t think that any of them had expected, but it was going to be okay. It was going to work out for the best.

Ella had to believe that, because it had been getting better. Things had stabilized a little bit, finally. And she thought that if they could keep it that way, then it would be alright. There was tension here, and she knew that. She could tell that something was wrong with Lester. And she knew better than to ask. It had to do with Dorian, and the mudblood. And Ella was just going to try and not think about it, and not focus too hard on her new uncles, lest she give herself a headache. There was some sort of pact or something, they were going to make it through this wedding before they did something about it, but she thought that there was just something that they were going to have to try and let go for now. It wasn’t really her problem, but Ella noticed everything, and she thought that that was something that she was interested in keeping an eye on for the rest of the week. That, and her sestra. Because Constance was a whole lot more smiley than Ella thought that she had been in a long time, and she wasn’t convinced that that was because Matka was happy.

Getting to the bottom of things was something that she just liked to do. It was something that she took it upon herself to do, and she was rather good at it. By the time that they got off of this island, she was going to know what it was that she wanted to know. But tonight, was not for sleuthing on her rodina. No, tonight was for being happy for Matka, and for Malcolm, and making sure that everything was going to go off without a hitch tomorrow. It was for being glad that Constance had come down here early and made sure that everything was perfect. It was just for being happy. Ella followed her sisters outside when she noticed that they were slowly leaving. Looking around the party for Temperance, in an off chance that she wanted to join them outside. She would be the only one missing, because Ella didn’t believe that they were going to get Pippa to hold still for more than a moment long enough to take a picture of all of them together. Chuckling at her sestra’s words she nodded at her younger sister, “She’s right Connie. We’re doomed.” Reaching out to take her littlest sister from Matka Ella shook her head at the baby. “We’re sorry for the craziness that is your rodina, nejmenší sestra.”
