[attr="class","textboduni"]A walk with her brother. That was what Camilla had asked for on their shared lunch break, and she had even dealt with that Helga-damned Floo for it. Because it wasn't as if she could just apparate to the Lufkin campus anymore, and then pop back over to Bangor right before her next class. She was without her magic now, and a while back, this sort of thing would have shaken Camilla to the core. She had been an Auror, and a damned good one at that. Ruthless and confident, her wand had simply been an extension of herself. But she had left that life well behind her, and now Camilla couldn't find it in herself to worry about her own loss of magic. She worried about Em, MJ, Ziggy, and Avery. She worried about Chris and Keegan. She worried about Bryan, Kingsley's oldest. Camilla knew she could cope with whatever came her way. After all this time, after everything she had been through, losing her magic was the least of her worries. She would survive this, just like she had survived that injury in the field and two wizarding wars. After all, Auror Shacklebolt and Professor Shacklebolt had two completely different agendas.

Camilla was good at taking care of everyone else. She was good at putting others first and managing her own life in the meanwhile. But even she could admit that this was taking a toll on them beyond just losing magic. Camilla was grateful, though, for the small victories. She could still teach Astronomy, even if it meant she had to give up her practical class. The one she had designed herself to teach students how to make an interactive star chart that shifted with one's coordinates. But she could manage that. She would teach the new professor that took it over the ins and outs of it. And Camilla would just have to swallow her pride and accept the fact that theory was just as important when it came to Astronomy. She couldn't dwell on this for long--not when her family needed her. The word family... that went far beyond blood for her, though. Of course, she cared for her brothers and their families. But Camilla also cared about the women she had grown to call sisters over the years. Oralee and Zahra, even if the former was technically no longer a Shacklebolt.

She knew her brother would have a tough time with this. Running a school wasn't easy. Camilla had seen the stress on Dean Powell's face as she told her the news, and Bangor had been manageable. They were a mighty school, but small, and most of their studies were research-based anyways. Lufkin was much larger, and with Kingsley in charge, she was certain that people were just waiting for him to screw something up. So Camilla understood the actions he had taken, and she wasn't sure if she would have done anything much too differently, had she been in his shoes. But she also understood Lee's decision. Because, whatever Kingsley was going to do to reopen Lufkin's doors, it wouldn't have been an easy choice either way, so she could sympathize with her sister's frustration. She knew Lee was conflicted about it all, though, and Camilla had gently reminded her that she had to stand by herself sometimes. That loving someone didn't mean giving up a whole part of herself.

At the end of the day, Camilla didn't think Kingsley's decision mattered. The magical world was changed for the worse, and she was still his older sister. She still needed to be there for him. It didn't matter if she agreed with him or not, because Camilla figured he could use a listening ear and some words of wisdom right about then. So they had grabbed coffees and gone for a walk off campus. They had been walking for a few minutes when Camilla noticed the pumpkin patch across the road. It was October. Years ago, she would be visiting the pumpkin patch with the kids, picking out the best ones for jack-o-lanterns. And now... she was trying to figure out what to say to her brother to make things better. A feat that was near impossible, honestly. "I remember when my biggest concern was MJ getting lost in the patch," Camilla finally said, breaking the silence. "Seems so... mundane now."

Hall of Fame
world knows our name

Merlin's beard, it had been a long few days. He and the Board of Directors had come to an agreement on how to proceed for the students and faculty afflicted by Epidemic X. The guidance coming from the Board was not very surprising. It fell in line with the school's long-standing policies for squib or other non-wixen students and faculty. Squibs had never been allowed to study alchemy or potions or wandmaking or spell invention. It made no sense to allow them in those programs...and for the time being, it made no sense to allow those who had suffered this mysterious illness to teach or study in those programs. Lufkin was not a school that existed simply for learning's sake. While teaching and growing the knowledge of students was obviously important and a central goal for the institution, Lufkin was the wizarding school in the country that produced doers. Bangor was there for the academics of the world. People came to Lufkin to get their hands dirty and feet wet. The schools existed for different purposes and so their administrations had reacted in ways that aligned with those purposes.

But some people did not like that. There had been a few protestors making a bit of a scene down at the Student Union earlier...and of course, his ex-wife had stormed into his office this morning with her resignation letter. He had tried to argue with her. He had tried to make her see reason. But if Oralee wasn't just as stubborn as anyone he knew, he was a hippogriff's uncle. She was being too emotional about things. It wasn't that she disagreed with the policy. She disagreed with him firing Penny. But he had already sent over a letter of recommendation to Meredith at Bangor to get Penny a job over there. She would be an asset to the other university's theoretical program.

His mind turned over all the things that had happened, meandering along at his sister's side. Kingsley had not been sure when she suggested they grab a coffee, what she would have to say. He didn't particularly want a lecture from Camilla on why he was wrong about enforcing the guidelines Lufkin had always had. Still, he trusted her counsel--and knew she wasn't really going to be ignored anyway....The silence between them was as comfortable as it had ever been. Kingsley drew comfort from just being around his sister. They were a competitive pair back in the day--hell, in ways they still were. But he considered her not just family, but friend. It was good to see her.

He chuckled softly, a hint of sadness in the expression that was normally associated with happiness. "Those years were too short." He had been Minister back then, trying to build a better world...but too many people held onto hate too strongly. They didn't want a better world. They had wanted revenge. It was a sad, vicious cycle. He thought this purist government was just another round of that--one that would bring upon itself the same backlash of revenge seeking that Durant had levied against the purebloods that had risen against him to rule now.

"Never wanted it to be this way. I saw the possibility for it--and I tried to lead the country away from that path. But Durant kept the fear and hate alive. Choices like his were always going to lead us to a place like this....This sickness feels like some act of revenge. It doesn't feel natural. If I believed in some god, I'd say we were getting punished for not learning from old mistakes. But since I don't, I have to think it's something set upon us by one of the cruelest and most dangerous creatures walking this planet...someone among us." Kingsley had been growing thoughts like these for awhile. The sickness was so bizarre. Nothing like it had been seen before--it came from nowhere and struck down so many. He knew of muggle warfare methods that were in essence manufactured sicknesses. Those had been deadly as he recalled...but this had been deadly in its own way.
