Her day at the caves still hadn't been long enough-- she'd had a minimum time set for when she could come stumbling back home, so she'd needed to find somewhere else to go. Couldn't stay in one place after all-- she had need buzzing in her bones, had to go someplace newer, different, once that she hadn't been to in a while. Not quite wanderlust, far too contained. A need to set out on her again, let her feet map a trail it had been years for.

She didn't usually get this. It was usually contained, exploding out only on the rare times she took vacations, took her family to visit the places her family was from, where they'd go into the mountains, they'd go camping, backpacking, they'd go into the jungles, visit the monuments of civilizations that had once been mighty. She'd done that more when great-grandfather Garrick still lived, during the time great-aunt Gráinne was still mostly well. That was why she'd wanted to take the family to Argentina, take them into the Andes, climb Aconcagua.  Then the lockdown had happened, and she'd needed to keep them close, and needed to keep them with her and somehow that didn't translate to a family trip.

Her limps itched, and Galenia sprung off into a light jog. The trail was marked, and not too difficult to stay on. She could stay like this forever, it felt, if there wasn't. . .no. She eased her way into a long stride, took a sip of her water. There was someone coming up behind her, and she moved to the side to accommodate, keeping her speed.

dirty paws
and furry coat
She ran down the forest slope

They had all been sick, and Ireland wasn’t sure that they had fully recovered. Honestly, she wasn’t sure if they were going to fully recover. Nick’s family had taken a hit, and she wasn’t sure how her father and her brother were doing. All she had gotten out of Logan’s short, three sentences reply to her letter was that they were both sick. That they were fine. And that she shouldn’t come around and check on them. Something that she had been half tempted to ignore. But she didn’t know how she was going to get to her brother alone. Because he was staying with their father now, instead of in his own apartment, and she didn’t think there was any reason to believe that things were going to be any better now than they were before. He was still going to be angry with her. But it was better than having her father slam the door in her face. Ireland wasn’t sure that she could handle that.

Not having a family was one of the hardest things that she had had to get used to. She had her mother. But Natalia was in Bulgaria, and Ireland had begged her not to come back. She didn’t want her to get sick. Not having her father, and her father turning her brother against her, it wasn’t something that she wanted to deal with. It wasn’t something that she even wanted to think about. It was eating at her though. Now more than ever. Because it was Logan’s birthday this week. Her brother was going to be twenty-one this week, and he still didn’t want anything to do with her. It had been over a year since she had had a conversation with him face to face. He would answer her letters, briefly, but he refused to see her. And she didn’t think that she was going to take that much longer.

Tracking him down wasn’t hard. He was with Dad. In the same house that they had moved to when she had been nine, and he had been almost seven. It was right there on that outcropping of rocks in Ireland. They were right there. She knew where to go. She just hadn’t done it. Ireland was working up the ambition for that. But she didn’t really have a reason to go now. Not when she knew that they were okay. Not when she would just end up upset by the whole thing. So much for Gryffindor courage… Shaking her head Ireland stopped walking as she neared the bottom of the incline and she tipped her head up to look at it. If she wasn’t going to be brave enough to talk to her brother, or her father, then she was going to do the only thing that she could think to do to get rid of it. Run.

Breaking into a jog, and then increasing her speed as she made her way up the incline Ireland pushed herself. She was going to be sore later. And Nick would most likely tease her about it. But she could handle it. She could take that kind of teasing, and knowing that he picked on her, and her silly need to run things out. Because he loved her. Because he cared. That was the kind of person that she wanted in her life. And she had chosen for him to be there. She wasn’t choosing to bring her father and her brother back into her life. Not yet. Coming up behind someone she slowed her stride and nodded to the other woman as she passed her. Stopping only when she got to the flat a little further up the side, and she waited for the other woman to catch up. Ireland took a drink of her water as she waited for Galenia. She knew her, if only in passing. Simply because she had met her on this trail before.
