[attr="class","cbody"]It was a little late in the season for a trip to the zoo, but it was where she found herself nonetheless.
[break][break]
There wasn’t much for her to do today and she had needed a distraction. She had felt like getting out of the house and this had just been the first place that had come to mind. Brenna hadn’t been to the zoo yet. Was she old enough to care about that one way or another? No. But here she was anyway. Sloane couldn’t say that she had ever actually been to a zoo before today. Her father hadn’t exactly been the time for that sort of family outing, but she didn’t want to be like that. Today, she had decided that meant going to the zoo.
[break][break]
It wasn’t exactly warm out, but it wasn’t snowing or anything, so she thought that it could definitely be worse. Neither one of them had magic to put warming charms on Brenna’s stroller or anything so that was a little inconvenient. But she had bundled her up to make sure that she didn’t get cold and she’d make sure to check on her. If she got too miserable then they could leave. But she thought that she was at least capable enough at this mothering thing by now, enough to make sure that her daughter didn’t freeze at the zoo.
[break][break]
Even if it was cold outside, it was at least sunny. That was something. She was going to call that a victory as far as this plan was concerned. The second of her victories came in the form of her husband, who she actually convinced to come with her today.
[break][break]
Sloane had thought that sweet talking him into it would be easy enough. She had found that it wasn’t all that difficult to sweet talk him into anything if she wanted it badly enough. It all sort of just depended on the circumstances and how much effort she needed to put into it--and if there needed to be bribes involved, or if wearing a specific outfit helped. There was always something that she could do to raise her chances of success.
[break][break]
It honestly hadn’t taken all that much to get him to cave today. His arguments had been ones that she had expected--it was cold out, Brenna wasn’t going to remember this trip to the zoo and they had plenty of time to take her in the future. All true. But that didn’t change the fact that she wanted to go. Once she got something into her mind, she wasn’t all that good at relenting. If he really hadn’t wanted to go with her, she would have taken Brenna on her own. That was fine. She just thought that it would be a lot more fun if he was there too. And he could keep her warm which he considered to be an added benefit.
[break][break]
They hadn’t been walking around for all that long, but already she had to admit that she wished she could cast a warming charm right about then. There were some parts of this no magic thing that was harder to deal with than other bits. And having to deal with the cold was one such problem, as were half a dozen other little issues that she came across on a daily basis. Still, the last thing that she was going to admit was that this had been a bad idea. Instead, she glanced over at Carlisle with an amused smile. “See? Isn’t this fun?” Maybe there was coffee around here somewhere--or hot cocoa or anything warm.

Everything is temporary
Love will never die

Sloane had said something about going to the zoo, and Carlisle could admit that he was a little surprised. For starters it was November, and he wasn’t convinced that it was actually warm enough to take Brenna to the zoo in the first place. But the second was that he hadn’t even really known that Sloane wanted to go to the zoo. And he liked to think that he knew quite a bit about his wife. She had been his choice, and he had made a pact with himself to do better this time. He knew that he hadn’t been fair to Gen. He was well aware of that fact, and he hoped that his sons learned what not to do from him. But he was doing better this time. With Sloane, he was trying.

Because he did care. And he did want her to know that. And so, they were here. A week before her birthday, they were here, at the zoo, of all places. And he knew that Brenna was never going to remember it, but Sloane would, and that was what mattered. Since she had gotten sick, since she had elected to go into that coma, he had been worried about her. More worried than he thought that he had ever been about anyone. Because he had known that he was losing his father, but there hadn’t been anything that he could do to help that. Edmund had been sick and had refused treatment. This was not that. This was not what had taken his father from him. And he thought that she knew that.

Or at least he hoped that she knew that. That he was going to be there. That he was going to do everything that he could to keep her safe. And warm. Because it was freezing out here. And he was well aware of how stubborn his wife was. She wasn’t going to admit that. She wasn’t going to admit that she was cold, and Carlisle thought that he could have probably persuaded her to wait, and come when it was warmer out, but the cost of that might not have outweighed the being warm. He didn’t think that he wanted to listen to her, all winter, talk about how they hadn’t gotten to go to the zoo. He was just glad that the zoo was still open.

There were times when he missed magic more than others, and while he was glad that he wasn’t in Hogwarts anymore, not having magic meant that he didn’t have a whole lot to do. He had to go to the Ministry more than he liked, because his cousin knew that he wasn’t doing anything else, and she had probably told Eleanor to make sure that he was on the rotation or something. Of course, she had, because she didn’t have enough to worry about. She was still meddling with the family. But Griffith was the only one that still had his magic, and Carlisle couldn’t help but be a little jealous of that.

Looking over at Sloane when she spoke, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and shook his head. “I really don’t think this is as much fun as it would have been in say, April…” He wasn’t going to say that it was the worst idea in the world, but there was no point in not bringing up the fact that it was freezing anyway. She had to admit that it was cold sooner or later. And if she was cold enough, he thought that she just might. “If Brenna gets frostbite on her nose, and it falls off, I’m telling her it was all because her mum wanted to go to the zoo.”

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Being cold in the winter was sort of a novel concept to her. Funny, really, because it was something that Muggles had to deal with every year. Something that Squibs had to deal with every year, but it was never something that she had worried about before. That was what warming charms were for. Sure, there were times in her life where she might have been a little chilly. But never absolutely, miserably cold.
[break][break]
That wasn’t something that she had thought all that much about when she had decided that she wanted to go to the zoo. She had bundled Brenna up, she was wearing some layers herself, and she had thought that it was going to be fine.
[break][break]
Sloane knew that it could be colder. It was only November. Lower temperatures were certainly to come, but it was still gross outside. She still had sort of ended up regretting this decision immediately, but she didn’t want to admit to that. Instead, she was going to try to stick it out until Carlisle said that he thought they’d had enough. Then at least it looked like she hadn’t been the one that was cold.
[break][break]
That was the plan, anyway, but it was getting harder to stick to that plan the longer that they were out there. It was just cold. Being at home by the fireplace sounded a hell of a lot better than mindlessly walking down zoo pathways, looking at animals that Brenna couldn’t even see from her stroller and wouldn’t likely care all that much about even if she could see them. Why had she thought this was a good idea? Had it really just been because her father hadn’t taken her on outings like this, so she had convinced herself that it was completely necessary? She didn’t know.
[break][break]
They looked a little out of place here, she knew that too. Carlisle and his suits—she was pretty sure that people didn’t normally wear suits to the zoo, but there weren’t exactly a lot of people around for her to base that off of. She knew that she couldn’t really talk either. Of the woman she had passed since they had arrived, which had been few and far in between, she had definitely been the only one in stilettos. Not that that bothered her. She wasn’t exactly going to come out in public in flats. Did she even own flats?
[break][break]
It wasn’t important. It was just clear to the few people that they had passed in the zoo that they weren’t exactly its usual clientele. And if Carlisle would just admit that he was cold, then they could go home. Or at least find somewhere in this place that served something warm to drink. One of the two, though she thought that she honestly preferred the former at this point. “It would be busy in April,” she reminded him, leaning against his side to try to retain more of his heat. “Too many people.” Generally speaking, most people were annoying, and she couldn’t imagine having to deal with the crowds in the nicer weather. “Her nose is not going to fall off. That’s what the blanket was for. And all the layers.” She was so bundled up in the stroller, and certainly the warmest out of the three of them.

birds
everything is temporary
love will never die

Everything that he had chosen, everything that had gotten him to where he was now, Carlisle had been the one that was responsible for it. Maybe not responsible in the fact that he wasn’t the most responsible guy in the world, but he was trying. For Sloane, he was trying, and he knew that sometimes he fell short. He knew that he wasn’t going to be that stand-up guy. He knew that he had made the choice to try and do better, but he was still him. And he knew that there were times when he had to pull himself back. When he had to make himself focus on what was important.

Sloane and Brenna were important. Edmund and James and Maddie were important. They were his family, and they were the ones that he cared about doing something for. The ones that he cared about doing something about. If that meant that he had to give things up, then he would. If that meant that he was going to get dragged to the zoo in November to freeze to death, then that was what they were going to do. It wasn’t that he had anything fundamentally against going to the zoo. He simply thought that it would have made quite a bit more sense in say, April, or May.

Before it became sweltering hot in the summer, but after the chill of winter had plenty gone away. Carlisle was not in the habit of making sure that things went perfectly, but this trip to the zoo had seemed oddly important for some reason. He had thought that Sloane might have been on the verge of a breakdown if he didn’t go. Which was probably an overstatement, but he thought that after everything that had happened in the hospital, he didn’t really know what to expect anymore. And upsetting her would do no one any good.

So here they were. They were going to walk around this zoo, in the winter, and freeze to death, for a memory that Brenna wasn’t even going to have. If she would have been older, big enough to play in the snow, and actually enjoy the day, he thought that it would have been different. Right now, he thought that this was just a waste of body heat. It was freezing out here, and he knew his wife well enough to know that getting her to admit that would be a challenge. But it was.

Coming along had been easier than extending the argument. And an argument it would have been. She didn’t let things go. There would have been no talking her out of it. And so, he had come along. It was easier to make sure that their nine-month-old daughter didn’t freeze to death if he came along. Otherwise he just would have worried about it the whole time that they were gone, and that wasn’t going to do him much good. He couldn’t exactly do anything else.

Inventing couldn’t happen. Without the school to distract him, he was bored. Carlisle didn’t handle bored very well. He was going to start doing things that were not any better than the things that he had done before if he wasn’t careful. He needed distractions. And he needed to not think about the things that they didn’t have anymore. Magic would have made this outing simple. They wouldn’t have been cold. There would have been no problem going to the zoo in the winter. But it was cold. It was cold because someone had stolen their ways of keeping warm. And he hated it. He hated being without his magic. He hated feeling helpless, and powerless.

Rolling his eyes, a little bit he shook his head, “It would have been warmer. And I think I’d rather deal with people than frostbite.” He didn’t mind people, or crowds, he just thought that he would have rather liked to feel his fingers. “I don’t know… You better hope it doesn’t. We’re going to have to resort to muggle plastic surgeons for our daughter’s poor little frostbit nose.”

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Here they were, at a zoo in November, because Sloane had thought that it was a good idea. For some reason. Now that they were here, and cold, those reasons didn’t seem as important. In fact, she had begun to wonder why people bothered with zoos at all. It was just a lot of walking, to see animals locked up in cages. She supposed it was something that Brenna might like when she was older. Old enough to actually look at the animals, instead of just taking a nap all bundled up in her stroller.
[break][break]
But now that they were here, Sloane also didn’t want to admit that this hadn’t been the greatest idea that she’d ever had. She’d blame it on some Yaxley stubbornness—that was probably what this was. She had talked Carlisle into the idea, even though he’d said it was too cold to go to the zoo, and now she didn’t want to admit to him that he had been right.
[break][break]
But he had. It really was miserably cold outside, and Brenna was napping in her stroller, so she was not even seeing any of the animals that happened to be out today. She and Carlisle obviously weren’t looking at them. They were just kind of mindlessly walking around the pathways—him talking about how cold it was, and her trying to act like it wasn’t that bad. Really, she was tempted to just call it a day and go home already. She could have Brenna down for a nap in ten minutes and be in front of the fire with hot cocoa in another five. Throw in being wrapped up in a blanket and that sounded just about like heaven right about now.
[break][break]
It just still didn’t stop her stubborn streak from shining through. She didn’t want to admit that she was cold and that this had been a bad idea. It had been, of course. Carlisle knew it, she knew it, Brenna would probably know it too if she were actually awake, but she didn’t want to admit to that. She wanted Carlisle to announce that they were going home and she could roll her eyes but secretly be pleased that they could get out of the cold. Honestly, was that really too much to ask for? She didn’t think that it was.
[break][break]
Sloane knew that she had likely only gotten her way to begin with because Carlisle was worried about her. That seemed to be an overlying theme of her existence since the healers had undone the spells that had put her into a coma. When they had, and she had woken up, she had felt better. And Carlisle had been there. Like he promised.
[break][break]
The rest of her symptoms had faded, and apart from having no magic, she should have been back at perfect health. But she wasn’t. She knew that it was the fact she was a seer that was causing that. Sometimes, out of absolutely nowhere, she’d have violent visions—the flashes of what she was seeing not anything that was even all that clear to her. Usually they made her black out, occasionally made her sick to her stomach and more exhausted than any of her visions had in the past. Carlisle hadn’t seen too much of that, thankfully, but she thought he’d seen enough of it to placate her with this trip to the zoo. Even if he wasn’t going to stop talking about how cold it was out.
[break][break]
Keeping close to his side, she tried to retain some of his heat while still pushing the stroller. “If you’re so cold, why don’t we find some coffee? There has to be a… food court, right?” She was pretty sure that was what they were called anyway. She’d seen it written on a sign somewhere throughout their walk, at least. “Oh, heaven forbid,” she shook her head at him, but still snuck a peek into the stroller to make sure that their daughter’s nose wasn’t at risk of falling off.

BIRDS
EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY
LOVE WILL NEVER DIE

It wasn’t really a stretch to figure out that he had been right all along, and that his wife was just too stubborn to admit it. Carlisle was well aware of both of those facts. But it didn’t change anything. They weren’t going to leave until Sloane caved in and decided that she was cold too. And his wife did not give in to anything easily. Especially not when she was wrong. And this she had been wrong about. Rubbing that in wasn’t going to get him out of this park any faster, and he knew that, but he couldn’t help it. The little comments were too good to pass up.

And they needed something to amuse themselves with in light of everything that had happened. The world was not the same place that it had been before. There was nothing about any of this that was acceptable, or the same. There was only the fact that they were still here, that they were still alive, that mattered. And Carlisle knew that no one had really died. Unborn babies. Some elderly. But not from the epidemic itself. They had died from side effects, and while that wasn’t good either, it was better than dying from the epidemic itself.

It was the feeling of powerlessness that he hated more than anything else right now. He hated feeling like he couldn’t do anything. His entire livelihood depended on having his magic. He was a Spell Inventor. That had been what he had made a career out of. He had been a professor, for a while, but leaving Hogwarts was what was needed. He had known that she was going to ask him to step down, and he had beaten her to it. He didn’t need to be in that castle when Sloane was home with Brenna anyway. He hadn’t missed any of that with the other kids. He wasn’t going to miss it with his youngest daughter either.

For all of the things that he was, a neglectful father was not one of them. And he knew that Maddie was less than enthused that he had left the school that easily. That he was going to be home with Brenna, and not at Hogwarts with her. But he didn’t think that it was really going to affect her social standing all that much. She was still Madeline Rosier. She was still perfectly capable of playing up the aunt that she had in the castle. He believed in her ability to do just about anything that she wanted.

And he had no doubts that Brenna would grow up in much the same fashion. She was going to know that she was a Rosier. That she was capable of taking over the world in that school if she wanted to. There was no question in his mind about that. They were his daughters. They were both perfectly capable of being captivating and charming, and getting their way. Their mothers were both that way. And looking over at his wife, he had no fear that Brenna would be getting her way with anyone that tried to cross her path. If she was anything like her mother, he had nothing to worry about there.

Sloane was confident, and strong, and Carlisle was sure that even if she was freezing too right now, she wasn’t about to admit defeat. The fact that she was even standing as close to him as she was, was a surprise to him. He had thought that she would have tried to keep the distance, if just for the sake of her pride. But she was colder than she wanted to admit. He could just tell. “I don’t think I’m the only one that’s cold right now.” There was a smirk to his words, and he shook his head when she bent over the stroller to check on Brenna’s nose. “Let’s see if there’s somewhere indoors to warm up around here. You can’t be the only crazy woman that wants her family to go to the zoo in November.”

Her father had to raise her and Conall on his own and as far as fun family activities went, the zoo was very low on the list. It didn’t make the list at all, actually. Sloane wasn’t sure that they had ever done anything as a family, in a traditional sense of the word anyway. Her father had always been more focused on their teachings. Everything that Conall needed to know to be the heir to the Yaxley line, everything that she needed to learn as a lady—and everything that she managed to convince her father that she needed to learn about the dark arts. With all of that, there had never really been time for something like going to the zoo.
[break][break]
She wasn’t even sure how she would have reacted if her father had tried to take them on a trip like this. It just would have been so out of the ordinary. She couldn’t even imagine it. But she didn’t want Brenna to be raised like that. As silly as this trip to the zoo was, it was important to her. It was proving to herself that her daughter wasn’t going to be raised like she had.
[break][break]
Or at least, that had been her mindset on it. Once they had actually gotten to the zoo and she had realized how cold it was outside, that cute logic had gone right out the window. Then it had just come down to not wanting to admit to Carlisle that this had been a dumb idea. He knew that it was, and she knew that it was, and honestly, Brenna probably knew that it was too. The fact that she wasn’t already crying from the cold was no indicator, because she was sure that was only a few moments from occurring. As much as she had tried to bundle her up, it was really miserable out. Knowing their luck, it would start raining or something. That would definitely be the cherry on top of this bad decision.
[break][break]
If that happened, she would definitely have to give up. Right now, she could put on a good face and try not to be the first one to admit how cold she was. She could hope that Carlisle would give in first. But the second that they involved rain, or Merlin forbid snow, she knew that she’d have to give in. She was definitely not dressed for this weather either. Being weather appropriate was not something that she ever really did and living in Norway as long as she had, she had grown accustomed to colder weather than this. It had made her cease to see the use in weather appropriateness when it came to wearing whatever she wanted to wear.
[break][break]
But that didn’t stop her from getting cold now. And Merlin, she was cold. She didn’t actually know how much longer she could manage to stay out here. Carlisle was at least in a suit. As overdressed as he was for the zoo, it had to be keeping him a little bit warmer than she was. It was another reason to stay close to his side in hopes that it would help to warm her up a little bit. “I may be a little cold… but only a little,” she conceded, tucking her arm in his as she started to push the stroller with her free hand. It was a little warmer pressed against his side, but she knew that they would all be a lot warmer if they got inside somewhere. Warmer still if they went home, but she was sure that they could find somewhere around here that was at least warmer than being outside in the cold and the wind. “I think there’s a food court up on the left.” There was a building they were approaching, anyway, and it looked promising. “And that means coffee.” She definitely could use the largest coffee right about now.

EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY
LOVE WILL NEVER DIE

If he thought that keeping quiet would have gotten them out of the zoo, and back home where they had heat, and a fire place, and brandy, he would have kept his mouth shut. But he knew his wife better than that. The Lady Rosier was not one to admit that she was cold. Or wrong. And right now, he knew that she was both. It was a matter of pride now. They would be staying until she couldn’t feel her fingers, or her nose. Or possibly both of those too. He knew that. And so, egging her on and teasing her at every opportunity was enough to keep him from thinking about the fact that he was nearly frozen.

Living their entire lives with the ease of a warming charm had meant that they weren’t in need of learning what was weather appropriate. And his suit right now was not weather appropriate for the zoo in November. He didn’t know what animals were even out right now. He had been so focused on badgering Sloane about whether or not she was cold, and if Brenna still had all of her fingers and her nose, that he hadn’t even been looking for the animals. Didn’t zoos have some sort of safeguard for this? Where they were closed when it was too cold for sane people to be out here?

Apparently this one did not. They had been more than happy to take the galleon that he had handed over to get them into the zoo, and they hadn’t said a word about it being too cold to actually see any of the animals. He was curious though, if they were all mainly inside, or if they too were hunkered down in their enclosures, braving the cold for the witches that were as stubborn as his wife. Because he was certain that Sloane could not be the only stubborn witch in the UK that thought that a family trip to the zoo in November was clearly the thing to do.

If she were, they would have been closed, and he would have had ample opportunity to tease her about it. But he knew that it must have been important. If it hadn’t been so important that they go, she would have backed down when he had insisted that it was freezing before they had even left home. Because this debate had started then. They weren’t really fighting. He could have put his foot down and seriously said no. He had come along on this excursion on his own, she hadn’t forced him. But it had to have been important to her.

He knew that she didn’t want to raise Brenna the way that they had been raised, or more the way that she had been raised. But he hadn’t been raised like that. They had done things as a family. Rosiers, and Blacks, and Tripes. They were like that. They had done things as families. And he thought that they were one of the extended families that had actually gotten to know one another. He didn’t know the Tripes as well as he knew the Blacks. But the Rosier children and the Black girls had all grown up together.

Family vacations to France. Extended holidays as families. They weren’t going to let their daughter grow up the way that she had. He would promise her that. “Uh huh…” He laughed at her when she claimed that she was only a little cold. He thought that if he reached out and touched her nose she would be just as freezing as he was sure that he was. “I think I need hot chocolate. If you’re going to drag me out here and make me freeze, we need hot chocolate and not just coffee.” They were supposed to be having fun after all. They could use some fun of a different sort. “And maybe some sort of snack for her.” She was eight months old; he didn’t think that there were going to be a lot of options. But there had to be something.
