Oh, my my how beautiful

[attr="class","reasonsmallisobel"]sometimes it may seem dark, but the absence of the light is a necessary part just know, you're never alone, you can always come back home

[attr="class","reasonbodisobel"]She was home.

That was all Isobel could think about as she walked towards Hermione’s home. Her friend – one of her dearest friends. It felt like years since she’d gone…she and her family fleeing the oppression and dangers of being a muggle-born in their society and Hermione Potter was finally home.

Hermione had owled her a few days after she’d returned to London to let her know that they’d arrived safely. Isobel had wanted to run over immediately, but she’d kept her distance for fear that she might draw attention to Number 12 Grimmauld Place. But now, there was nothing that could stop her from seeing one of her dearest friends.

The news was out – or at least, it was amongst the Order folk.

Isobel had no idea if everyone else knew. But the fact was that it didn’t matter. All that mattered was she could finally visit her. She could finally confirm that her friend was fine. That her children were fine. That Harry was fine.

Standing in front of Number 12 Grimmauld Place brought back so many memories. Times that had long gone…days of their twenties spent keeping the Order of the Phoenix alive. Hermione, Harry, Ron, Cho, Ginny, Michael.

Some days, she felt like her friends were more her family then Morag would ever be. The Order understood her. They understood what she fought for. It was the belief of equality that brought them together and kept them together. It didn’t matter if they were pureblood, half-blood, muggle-born, even Squib. The only thing that mattered was that they were magical and magical folk had to take care of one another. Because they were family. That was what Isobel never understood about her twin sister: how could she not see that? How could she not see the importance of family? Then again, Is knew she shouldn’t be all that surprised. After all, her sister had never much valued their relationship… How could she think that her sister would extend a love for family that she’d never had?

Isobel paused for a moment before she raised her hand to the door and knocked a few times. It didn’t take long for it to swing open and she was greeted with a sight for sore eyes.

“Mione,” Isobel had never been so happy to see her friend. She was happy to know that she was safe – alive. She’d been unharmed in everything that had gone down over the past few years. Isobel’s heart felt as if it grew three sizes in seeing her again. She had always been a bleeding heart – but she cared more for her friends than anyone. “Merlin’s Beard, am I glad to see you. You look great, incredible –” Isobel paused, picking up a piece of Hermione’s hair in her hand. “Highlighted? Tan…look at you, Miss Prima Donna, you go off to an island for months and come home and I hardly recognize you.” But she was already wrapping her arms around Hermione, taking in a breath of fresh air. Because for once in the past year and a half, Isobel felt like she could relax.

Into our eyes

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Coming back to London had been something that Hermione had been thinking about for quite a few weeks before the family meeting. She hadn’t been able to keep those thoughts from Harry for long. He always seemed to know when she had something on her mind, but she knew that he wanted to go back to London too. She knew that he hadn’t thought that they would be on that island for as long as they had.
[break][break]
And, even with the registration still going, it had started to seem like it was worth the risk. With the epidemic, the Ministry certainly had bigger problems than the Potters coming back from wherever they’d been. She wanted to think that it was going to be okay.
[break][break]
Of course, she hadn’t come back with plans to go into the Ministry to talk to Andromeda. That had just sort of… happened. She had decided that something needed to be done. She had thought about it and had realized that it was just ridiculous that the registration was still happening. That more than half of the wizarding United Kingdom had lost their magic, but they were still sending brilliant minds into mines or stuffing them into maid uniforms.
[break][break]
It was horribly wrong even before the epidemic. But Merlin knew that purists needed something to be in it for them before they could consider changing anything. This was their something. This was their way in. Hermione had been out of politics for a while, but she would put on a good face and she would fight for this something if she needed to. It was the right thing to do.
[break][break]
There would certainly be people that scoffed at her attempts to help now. Since they had ran. She was sure that people saw it that way. But she would never see any need to defend their choices. They had wanted to protect their children and that was exactly what they had done.
[break][break]
But now they needed to trust that they were going to be okay—and not be as reckless as she had been, walking into the Ministry a few days before. She had come out of it alive though, and with the promises of another meeting soon, this time with more people. Hermione already knew that she wanted to owl Kingsley. Well, she had technically told Andromeda she would be inviting Kingsley and George. The first option was a no brainer but George… she was less certain about that choice. But since he was the one that had been voted in to lead the Order, it seemed like the right choice.
[break][break]
When she heard a knock on the door, Hermione set the book she’d been reading down on the coffee table before standing up. She wasn’t expecting anybody, but they had owled a couple of their close friends to tell them that they were home. People had just been stopping by since then and Merlin, it was good to see them.
[break][break]
It didn’t stop her from checking the peephole just in case. But when she did, she saw Isobel and a smile grew on her face before she even opened the door. “Hi,” she said, still smiling. It was ridiculous how good it was to see her—she had kept in contact with some of her good friends via owl, but she still missed them horribly. “The island was in Ireland, Isobel,” Hermione laughed, returning her hug. She certainly didn’t feel like she looked all that different, but who knew? Maybe she did. “Now get in here. Do you want tea? Or wine?” Hermione asked, finally pulling away and stepping back so that Isobel could come inside.

Oh, my my how beautiful

[attr="class","reasonsmallisobel"]sometimes it may seem dark, but the absence of the light is a necessary part just know, you're never alone, you can always come back home

[attr="class","reasonbodisobel"]Hermione and her family were among the good ones. In a world where good and bad so often came to blows, Isobel was glad that she could count her as a friend. Of course, they were teammates, too. Both members of the Order of the Phoenix, Isobel and Hermione had known each other for a long time. Since school, really. They’d been through hell and back together. And that left a mark on people. Sometimes, it was a mark for the worse…sometimes, a mark that defined them.

It was the reason that Isobel was so close to Michael. They’d gone through hell and back together and somehow managed to turn out alright. They had two kids — that was something, wasn’t it? Isobel bit down on her lip. Some days, she worried after Riannon and Pearson more than anything. What would this new world mean for them? What would Epidemic X and the muggleborn registration mean when they were old enough to truly understand?

Riannon was already well on her way, Isobel knew. And soon, it would only be a matter of time before they would need to explain to her why things had happened the way they had. Difficult conversations were bound to happen. But, her daughter would be stronger because of it. Her son, too, when he was finally of age.

Hermione did look well, all things considered, Isobel wasn’t being false. Of course, the bit about tans and highlights may have been a little heavy-handed, but she’d always had a way about her. Isobel was the sort of girl who could smile even when the going got tough. She had a good attitude and sometimes, that was just what people needed. They needed an infectious smile in their lives. “Ireland…the Maldives…what’s the difference, really?” she said with a laugh. In truth, it didn’t matter where she’d gone. All that mattered now was that she was back.

As Hermione pulled back, Isobel moved inside with her invitation. 12 Grimmauld Place. She’d been here a few times, but the history of the building always fascinated her. The stories that could be told her — the history of the Order. Their Order. “Either is great,” Shedding a few of her layers, Isobel draped them over her forearm and moved towards the kitchen. She was familiar enough with the layout of the home. “But wine is nearly always superior,” it was still early in the afternoon, but late enough that she could go for a small drink.

“You’ll have to tell me everything,” Is said as she turned around and walked backward for a few paces. She wanted to know about the island and if they’d heard anything about the Epidemic. Surely there was news from someone, wasn’t there? Hermione and Harry had connections in high places. “The whole Order’s buzzing with the news that you’ve come back.”

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Leaving had been necessary. There was no doubt about that. When the registration had come about, it had felt like there was no good answer for a time. Hermione hadn’t known what to do. She didn’t just have herself to think about. She didn’t even just have her parents to think about, like last time. Although it had been a difficult decision, the memory charms placed on them had been enough to keep them safe. And with the hunt for the horcruxes their first priority, obviously she had never given a single thought to going before the Muggleborn Registration Commission.
[break][break]
This time around, it had been different. They had their children to think about, and Hermione had to do whatever she could to keep them safe. That was the true reason why she had packed and unpacked for the Registration as many times as she had. There were days when it felt like the only way to ensure that her family was safe.
[break][break]
Harry was always the one that talked her down—or argued with her until she gave in. It wasn’t that she wanted to register, to give up—but with the kids trapped in Hogwarts, it had felt like the only option. Viktor had protected them from that. He had given them another option, and it had been the right thing to do. Staying there, staying safe… it had been the right choice at the time.
[break][break]
But Merlin, she had missed everybody. She hadn’t realized how much until she was back. Seeing Isobel was enough to put a smile on her face, even despite everything else going on. Despite the mysteriousness of the epidemic, despite the meeting at the Ministry that was still on her mind. A surprise visit from Isobel was just what she needed, in fact.
[break][break]
Rolling her eyes good-naturedly at the blonde, Hermione shook her head. “We did take a surprise trip to the Caribbean last Christmas—so close enough, honestly.” Merlin, had they been gone that long already? They had been gone so long that news of what they had done nearly a year ago was still news. That was how long it had been since she had last seen Isobel. Christmas was almost upon them again, after all.
[break][break]
Hermione headed in the direction of the kitchen, already thinking that wine sounded like a much better option than tea did. As much as she liked tea, this reunion certainly seemed like it called for wine. “You read my mind.” It wasn’t as if they were going to finish a bottle of wine between the pair of them—it wasn’t so early in the day that a glass or two was completely unacceptable. “Oh, I’m sure they are…” There was always something to buzz about. She knew there were a fair few people in the Order that had their opinions about them choosing to leave to begin with. And it wasn’t as if it had been an easy choice. But it had been a necessary one.
[break][break]
Once they made it to the kitchen, Hermione headed immediately for the cabinets to pull down two wine glasses. “Red or white?” She asked, glancing back at her friend. She was more partial to red herself, but they had both and either would be fine, really.
