They had been since she was young.
Katrine had taught her well. Maintain a poker face and always keep your cool. Cross your heart and hope to die and if they did come for you, just smile, darling. But Athena doubted they would. She was good at covering her tracks.
With magic, she had been able to keep and contain Shelby for a few weeks, experimenting on her to get to the bottom of all of this...madness. Unfortunately, her research had been cut short by the appearance of a certain international group hell bent on getting to the bottom of all this. Athena knew better than to be at the center of all of this. But she also knew that she might know something important...something that she had been holding to herself for quite some time now.
Maybe a part of her enjoyed the fact that some people couldn't raise wands any longer. Perhaps even more likely, Attie liked the fact that she was among the elite. No longer was she just the little sister playing second-fiddle to her brother's band of merry Death Eaters...she had power.
But a part of her was suddenly longing for something else.
She had so long put the idea of family out of her mind that it seemed like a far and distant notion, but the longer she spent isolated, researching with Shelby, the more she realized that even if she did find a cure, there would be no one to share it with.
It was the reason that she had owled Ares a few days ago, asking him to meet her for dinner. The bridge could be mended, she was sure of it. After all, months had long passed since he had tried to rule the Ministry himself. It wouldn't be complete social suicide to be seen with him - provided he didn't bring that troll of a wife along with him.
They'd been served dinner, talked over the surface level, and even shared a few laughs. It almost felt like old times. And a part of her desperately wanted to slip back into their old ways. Athena wanted to be like they were before - they had once sworn to protect one another until their dying breath. And now? Before tonight, she could hardly stand to be in the same room with him. But things were changing.
As dessert was served, there was a lull in the conversation. Lull enough for Athena to look up and catch the wandering eye of Sabine Larsen a few tables across the room. "She's mine," Athena said, peering over her wine glass at the blonde that was sitting a few tables away. Her slender fingers moved down the stem of her wine glass as she twisted it in a small circle. "The one with Thea - Sabine Larsen," she didn't dance around the subject and pressing the wine glass to her lips, she returned her attention to her brother across the small mahogany table.
There was something freeing about her words. Ares was the only person that she had told - the only person that she dared tell - but perhaps, she thought, he might understand.
