[attr="class","reasonbodathena"]Secrets were her specialty.

They had been since she was young.

Katrine had taught her well. Maintain a poker face and always keep your cool. Cross your heart and hope to die and if they did come for you, just smile, darling. But Athena doubted they would. She was good at covering her tracks.

With magic, she had been able to keep and contain Shelby for a few weeks, experimenting on her to get to the bottom of all of this...madness. Unfortunately, her research had been cut short by the appearance of a certain international group hell bent on getting to the bottom of all this. Athena knew better than to be at the center of all of this. But she also knew that she might know something important...something that she had been holding to herself for quite some time now.

Maybe a part of her enjoyed the fact that some people couldn't raise wands any longer. Perhaps even more likely, Attie liked the fact that she was among the elite. No longer was she just the little sister playing second-fiddle to her brother's band of merry Death Eaters...she had power.

But a part of her was suddenly longing for something else.

She had so long put the idea of family out of her mind that it seemed like a far and distant notion, but the longer she spent isolated, researching with Shelby, the more she realized that even if she did find a cure, there would be no one to share it with.

It was the reason that she had owled Ares a few days ago, asking him to meet her for dinner. The bridge could be mended, she was sure of it. After all, months had long passed since he had tried to rule the Ministry himself. It wouldn't be complete social suicide to be seen with him - provided he didn't bring that troll of a wife along with him.

They'd been served dinner, talked over the surface level, and even shared a few laughs. It almost felt like old times. And a part of her desperately wanted to slip back into their old ways. Athena wanted to be like they were before - they had once sworn to protect one another until their dying breath. And now? Before tonight, she could hardly stand to be in the same room with him. But things were changing.

As dessert was served, there was a lull in the conversation. Lull enough for Athena to look up and catch the wandering eye of Sabine Larsen a few tables across the room. "She's mine," Athena said, peering over her wine glass at the blonde that was sitting a few tables away. Her slender fingers moved down the stem of her wine glass as she twisted it in a small circle. "The one with Thea - Sabine Larsen," she didn't dance around the subject and pressing the wine glass to her lips, she returned her attention to her brother across the small mahogany table.

There was something freeing about her words. Ares was the only person that she had told - the only person that she dared tell - but perhaps, she thought, he might understand.

beast in my bones
She gets everything she wants
When she gets me alone

He had to admit that getting a letter from his sister surprised him. It wasn’t like he had had a lot of contact with Athena over the last two years. Since he had brought Issa home, and even before that, things had been rocky. They had been on the outs, and he didn’t think that they could get too much more distance between them. It wasn’t like he had done anything to fix it though. He had let her have her space, and he had had his. He hadn’t talked to any of them. Not since Eleánora had seen fit to tell him everything that he had done wrong for the last thirty years.

Ares hadn’t realized just how much the younger witch knew. How much they all knew, now. And he was surprised that she hadn’t had one of her many new bodyguards knock him out when she was through with the verbal lashing. And he had taken it. He had let her yell at him, because he knew that she was right. He hadn’t done anything. And he had continued to do nothing, even when they had lost everything. Well, not everything. They hadn’t lost everything, but they weren’t where they had been before. The power dynamic had shifted.

Losing his sister had been a part of that, and he had thought, for a long while anyway, that it would be the part that he didn’t get back. He didn’t think that he was going to get back to that. He didn’t think that they were going to get to something like this. Something where he could sit here, and accept her invitation, and them not want to kill one another. It wasn’t as simple as it had been before. Fire and Ice. That’s what they had always been. He was the Wentzell. He was Fire. She was the Finley. She was Ice. And they had balanced one another out.

Without one another, there was something that just wasn’t quite there. And he hadn’t realized that it had been her that he was missing, until he had sat down across from her. This was familiar. It was familiar in a way that made it seem like maybe they could fix this. She was still his sister, after all. And so long as they didn’t talk about the things that she considered his mistakes, then he thought that they were doing just fine. And there was no reason to. He wasn’t going to screw this up by talking about the family that she hated.

They had made it entirely through dinner, and Attie had ordered dessert, when she pulled his attention away from the table and across the room. Her words didn’t make sense at first, but he followed her eyes across the room to a familiar blonde. Sabine Larsen had been a figure in the Mountbatten household for a long time. And Ares was more than a little surprised when he realized what exactly she was saying. “She’s what?”

Hers? He didn’t think that he would have missed that. He didn’t think that their mother would have allowed something like that. Sabine Larsen? Attie’s daughter? The more that he looked at the young witch, the more he wondered how people didn’t see it. It was clear. In the shape of her face. The arch of her eyebrow when she was speaking. It was there… “You have a daughter…”

[attr="class","reasonbodathena"]His surprise was evident. Delightful, even. They had shared everything, once. More than Ares cared to admit. And yet, there was something so right about telling him. It almost felt natural. For there was no one else in the world that she would trust with her secret. Only her daughter and her brother.

“Strange, isn’t it?”

She’d never wanted to have children. Athena had never truly been interested in mothering anything. There was always the prospect of giving birth to a pureblood heir in the back of her mind, but in truth, she’d never wanted it. It was a legacy. And frankly, in her opinion, her legacy was better served elsewhere. She was meant to leave her mark on this world in a different way. Still, across the way sat a blonde who was arching her eyebrow in such a familiar manner that Athena couldn’t help but shake her head.

It was obvious once she pointed it out. If the two women stood anywhere close to one another, their resemblance rung out like a bell in the middle of the night. Looking at Sabine was like stepping back in time. And, as she turned her attention back to her brother across her own table, she remembered fondly a childhood that they had shared.

A boy and a girl that swore to protect one another no matter what came their way. A fierce sort of loyalty that threatened unhealthy levels on Athena’s side. And yet, somehow, they always ended up here. Across the table from one another, sharing secrets as if no time had passed at all.

Here, she was at ease. She felt like the world wasn’t resting on her shoulders when she sat across from Ares. It was precariously balanced between the pair of them – perched on a tightrope that threatened to unhinge at any moment. And yet, it brought her peace to be across from him. Almost as if the missing puzzle piece was returned.

She had spent so long being angry and upset about what he had done. She’d spent so long trying to make up for his shortcomings that Athena had been ignoring the truth. Every step she took away from her brother was a step towards her unhappiness. Every step she took away from Ares was a step in the wrong direction. She’d known it with such clarity when she was young, but as the years had passed, her vision had blurred. It was only now that Athena was beginning to realize that she needed him.

“She looks so much like me when I was her age,” She locked eyes on him, bright blue irises piercing as she sought to find something…anything in that gaze of his. Was she looking for acceptance? Permission? Disgust? “Paris was unkind those few months after you were imprisoned,” she said vaguely, picking up her spoon and putting a bite of the dessert into her mouth. Her mother had seen to everything, protecting her from the outside world while she ‘studied in Paris.’ In truth, the only learning she’d been doing was studying the porcelain bowl of her mother’s toilet during her bouts of morning sickness.

Attie still remembered what had caused it all – the pain. That ache that she had felt in the bottom of her soul. Longing and sadness. Heartbreak and abandonment. She’d believed she would never see her brother again. How things had changed.
