You know it's true
Everything I do
I do it for you

June 2001
Viktor and Hermione’s Flat
Sofia, Bulgaria

Hermione was coming from London, and Viktor hadn’t quite figured out how to tell his mother that he planned on marrying this girl. They had been friends for six years, and somewhere along the way it had become something else. They had gone from friends, and pen pals, to learning how to balance a relationship between his quidditch career, and her working in the British Ministry. But they had figured out how to make that work. And that had meant two flats. In London, and in Sofia.

He was one of the biggest quidditch names in the world. They were looking great for the 2002 World Cup next year. Bulgaria had this in the bag. And he knew that she was still one of the most well-respected war heroines in England. They were the epitome of a celebrity couple. And keeping their relationship quiet was always going to be a challenge. Somehow, they had managed though. For the most part no one bothered them anymore. They were practically old news.

Last he had heard Harry and Ginny were getting married, Fleur had said that Victoire was starting to fly on her little kid broom. And life was just working itself out. Sure, things were always going to taste a little bit like war. But there hadn’t been a war here. Bulgaria hadn’t seen war since Grindelwald himself. And he thought that that was almost better. He didn’t want to take her away from her life there, or her work there. They would continue to make this all work. But he wanted to ask her to marry him here. In this flat. In Bulgaria.

He wasn’t just offering her a life together. He was offering her a future, with him. Here. And when he retired from quidditch, maybe settling down in England would be the answer. But for now, he needed to be here, and she needed to be there, and they could make that work. It wasn’t that far, and magic made the trip easy enough. They could make this work. He wanted this to work. He wanted to see where this was going to go. He wanted to see if they could really be this happy.

She made him happy. And he wanted that for her. He wanted to make her happy. But he wanted her to be happy as Hermione Krum. He wanted the world to know that he loved her. He wanted the world to know that she was worth it. And he thought that they did. He thought that the world could see exactly what he saw. But he wanted to make sure. He wanted to prove it to her. He wanted to prove everything to her. And that’s what this night was about.

He was going to propose. He had asked her to come here for dinner. He had made dinner himself, and he was trying. He was trying to do this right, but he didn’t know how to propose to someone. He didn’t know what happened after he got her here, and he pulled out a ring. Obviously, the best scenario was that she said yes, but Viktor didn’t know if he had prepared for what would happen if she said no. She wasn’t going to say no… They had been together for almost two years. This was going to be fine.

Taking a deep breath, he smiled when he heard the Floo come to life. Heading back out towards the living room he smiled at her as she stepped through the flames. “Zdraveĭ lyubov.” He pressed a kiss to her lips, and then to the top of her head as he wrapped his arm around her. He liked having her here, he liked having her home. “How was the trip?”

“Zdraveĭ lyubov.” - Hello, love.

[attr="class","cbody"]During the war, there had been no thinking about the ‘after’. There had not been a lot of time to wonder what they were going to do when it was over, because it was scary to think about just how it was going to end. Who would win, who would lose, who would be lost along the way. In the end, winning had not really felt like winning. There was no proper word for it, when the battle had been done and Voldemort had been gone. They had won, but it had been at a great cost, and they had all known what kind of work it would take for them to get back to where they needed to be.
[break][break]
And it had. It had taken time. They were still working on it, in all honesty. It wasn’t something that was going to be sorted out or fixed overnight. It had been three years since the end of the war. Two years since she had graduated Hogwarts for real—with all Outstandings, thank you very much. It had been nice to be able to focus on school for a year without worrying about what was going to happen if she let her guard down for two seconds. It had been nice to be graduated, and done, though. Her next stop after graduation had been the Ministry, of course. Really, she had been working there the entirety of the time that she had been finishing up her schoolwork at Hogwarts. She had been doing everything that she could to help Kingsley and to help them get the Ministry back to the way that it should be, through owls, through trips into London when she could manage it. Minerva wasn’t really going to say no to that, after everything.
[break][break]
A position in the Ministry was not something that she’d imagined for herself, because there had been no imagining what came next until the war was done and over with. Once it had been, then she could think about that. Then she could figure it out.
[break][break]
Her relationship with Viktor wasn’t something that she had thought would happen either. Staying in touch with him after he went back to Bulgaria had been a simple thin. She had enjoyed talking to him. It had been nice. And then the war had ended, and it could become something more than just them writing letters. Maybe there had been hints toward that all along. Hermione couldn’t pretend to be the most knowledgeable person in the world when it came to relationships and attraction and whether or not someone was or was not flirting. Maybe it had been there in their letters for years, but she had not noticed it until after the war. That was when it had become something more.
[break][break]
A relationship from countries away was no easy thing, even with magic. It wasn’t easy to see each other. Weekly date nights weren’t something that could be planned on a whim. It took work, but she wasn’t afraid of work. She wasn’t afraid of putting her time toward something that mattered to her, and Viktor mattered to her. She loved him. The past two years had been incredible, despite the distance. Hermione knew that they would have to address that eventually. That they would have to figure something out if they were going to keep seeing each other, if they were going to take steps forward. Being countries away would not work forever.
[break][break]
But there were parts of it that she enjoyed. She enjoyed the excitement leading up to a trip, and the feeling that filled her when she finally saw him again. “Hi,” she answered, arms trailing up his chest as she kissed him back. “The usual madness. I swear the Portkey Office in London is always dealing with some malfunction or another.” But they had still managed to get her to the Bulgarian Ministry, and the Bulgarian Ministry had been able to get her here, which was all that mattered.
