SCHOOL RULES AND REGULATIONS
MAGIC USE

The use of magic inside the castle is allowed, with certain restrictions. Students may not use magic against another student or faculty member with the intention of harm. Students may practice magic outside of classes but they must ensure that they are careful in their practice as magic is a delicate subject. Students seen using magic negatively will be disciplined accordingly.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

It is the policy of Hogwarts that if a student is to be absent from classes that they send a note to their Head of House prior to 8:00 A.M. to inform them of such a decision. A student who has acquired 10 absences may face the possibility of not passing said class. An absence, as defined by Hogwarts, occurs when a student arrives twenty minutes after the start of class or does not appear at all. Here are the lists of class times, though NEWT level students might have gaps depending on the courses they are taking.

DRESS AND APPEARANCE POLICY

It is highly important that students and faculty each abide by the dress code that has been set in place. The dress code has been determined in order to allow students the possibility to focus on their studies during certain hours of the day, relaxing during others. Attire, at all time, is to remain modest and at a decent fitting, Laundry is washed by house-elves.

Work
Full school uniform must be worn during the full working day, Monday through Friday, until 4:50 P.M.

  • Plain black work robe
  • Trousers (or an optional skirt for girls)
  • Collared shirt with house emblem (tucked in)
  • House Tie

Formal attire is worn at the balls or special dinners as acknowledged by the Headmaster.

Male students must be in formal attire, meaning no excessively baggy or tight pants, and no jeans. Depending on formality of the dance in question, ties may be required.

Female students can choose to wear a dress, permitting that they follow all dress code rules regarding length not being shorter than mid-thigh, no revealing tops that expose midriffs and cleavage, nothing excessively tight, though spaghetti strap and strapless are okay.

APPEARANCE

  • Hair must be of a natural colour
  • Boys must be clean-shaven and well-groomed
  • Individuals may only have piercings in their ears, no more than three per ear

CURFEW

It is highly imperative that all students gain the proper night's rest each night. It is because of this that a curfew has been set, encouraging students to return to their dormitories and get prepared for a full night's rest. There is no set bedtime, however, and students are free to mingle with others in their dormitory at a quiet volume. Regardless of curfew, quiet hours around Hogwarts, including inside dormitories and outside of dormitories, begin at 8:00 P.M. on Sunday through Thursday night. On the weekends, quiet hours begin at 10:00 P.M.

Pets are permitted for all years at Hogwarts, limited to an owl, cat, rat, or toad. Other animals MAY be permitted with prior permission from the Headmaster. If a student is to have a pet, they are responsible for taking care of said pet as it is a great responsibility. Pets are not allowed to be in any class unless one has received prior written approval from the professor of that class. Likewise, pets are forbidden from being in the Great Hall.

MEAL PERIODS

There are three meals served at Hogwarts. All students are required to attend dinner every night. Breakfast is required to be attended the first Monday of the school year as that is when class schedules are handed out.

USE OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Alcohol is strictly prohibited at Hogwarts, the very small exception being Butterbeer when provided by the school during a special event. Any student found with an alcoholic substance will be disciplined accordingly, based on each situation. The possession, distribution, or consumption of such a drug is not allowed on Hogwarts grounds. The student's parent or guardian will be informed of such a situation prior to disciplinary means taking place.

CARE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY

The School has many sources that are available to students, whether it be books in the library, or chairs that the student sits on during class. Property of the school is expected to be treated well, left in good condition. Damages that a student makes to the school property is irresponsible and it is up to the student and their parent/guardian to replace damaged items. Damaged property by a student will be placed on their account, forbidding them from graduating until all bills have been sufficiently paid.

STUDENT CONDUCT
BULLYING

Bullying is strictly prohibited, whether it be against one's fellow student, a faculty member, or a creature of Hogwarts. This act is not tolerated in the slightest. Hogwarts is intended to be a safe and peaceful atmosphere for all those attending its grounds and it is important that it is kept this way. Bullying is noted as a type of harassment, which will be later discussed. Reports of bullying will be investigated in a timely manner and disciplined accordingly. Any student who has been found to be bullying another will have their parent or guardian immediately notified, and a meeting will begin between the parent/guardian, the Headmaster, the school Guidance Counselor, and the student. Bullying includes, but is not limited to, using an unwelcome gesture, insulting verbal or physical communication, or an inappropriate act against another, making the individual reasonably feel as if they had been attacked, or causing them to feel emotionally or physically harmed. A hostile school environment is not tolerated at Hogwarts.

HARASSMENT

There are many types of harassment, one being previously listed under a separate category. No student, faculty, or creature may be subject to being a victim of harassment. If they are, the individual held accountable will face proper disciplinary action for their actions. It is very important that every individual at Hogwarts be intentional in avoiding making others feel uncomfortable, keeping them safe from even accidentally harassing another. Unwanted, harmful, or consistent pranking may be considered a form of harassment so it is recommended that one strays from such juvenile behavior. If an individual believes that they are a victim of harassment, they should immediately inform their Head of House who will then converse with the Headmaster about solving the issue. If, however, it is the Head of House who is being accused of harassment, the student may immediately go to the Headmaster. The incident, no matter the result, will be accurately documented and kept on school records.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

The Guidance Counselor is free to assist any student or faculty member, no matter the situation. There are some issues that may be above the present Counselor's skillset, but the Counselor will be adamant about seeing that they are capable of assisting the one in need. The Counselor is highly trained and is encouraged to consistently increase in learning to better benefit the students and faculty of Hogwarts. Students that are doing poorly may be sent to the Counselor, as well as students that are causing a disruption in class. It is highly encouraged that all students go to see the Counselor at some point before needed to so that they are comfortable with the Counselor. Regardless, starting in fifth year, each student will be required to meet with their Counselor at the beginning and the end of the school year. All emergency situations that are brought to the school's attention will be directed to the Counselor who will then inform the student.

SAFETY
HEALTH AND SAFETY

The individual's safety and health is of utmost importance to the school. No individual may partake in an act that will endanger the physical or mental health of any other individual, human and creature alike. Students are expected to follow the direction of the professor as magic can be dangerous if used incorrectly, especially in the subjects of Potions or Charms. Not abiding by the professor's guidance may be referred to as reckless endangerment and may be disciplined accordingly.

The Healer will assist with any health related concerns, whether it be sickness or injury, or other issue. Any individual under the care of the Healer will be expected to follow the commands of the Healer. They are not permitted to leave the Hospital Wing unless they have received prior approval by the Healer and failure to abide by this may result in disciplinary action.

Please note: all individuals seeking to participate in an athletic sport, such as Quidditch, will be required to see the Healer so that the Healer may conduct a proper examination to determine that the student is physically capable of completing the demands of the sport.

To avoid health problems, it is recommended that the students dress according to what the weather permits, adding an extra precaution so that the student may not fall ill. Please note that only six visitors per individual are allowed at one time. Visiting hours will last until 6:00 P.M. before the Hospital Wing is cleared of all those not being carefully monitored by the Healer.

Health concerns that the Healer is unable to see to will be sent directly to St. Mungo's, where the student will fall under the care of Healers there, needing to abide by their policies.

EMERGENCY DRILLS

Emergency drills are highly important to the safety of this school, ensuring that all students, faculty, and creatures know precisely what to do in the case of an emergency. The emergency drills will occur at random intervals during the school year, at which time the student is to follow the direction of their Head of House and/or prefects. Each individual will be informed of what is expected of them during these drills at the beginning of the year so that if they are not near someone of authority, they will know precisely what they must do. Talking during these emergency situations is prohibited in order to allow students the chance to hear the orders that are being given.

OUTSIDE OF HOGWARTS
HOGSMEADE VISITS

Students that are in their third year or older, AND have received written permission from their parent or guardian may partake in these trips. Permission slips must be received by the Head of House at least two weeks prior to the next Hogsmeade Trip. The weekends are listed under the Calendar section of the Handbook. The rules and regulations of Hogwarts must be followed by students while they are at Hogsmeade as this is considered a school trip and the student is still under the responsibility of the school. Any rule breaking is subject to be disciplined by the rules of society, and not just the School, depending on the infraction.

Casual attire may be worn during these occasions. All students must meet at the Front Entrance of the Castle at 9:00 A.M. and they will be expected to return to Hogwarts by 9:00 P.M.

LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS

Students are forbidden from leaving school grounds unless prior written permission is granted, or if the student has been accepted as eligible to go to Hogsmeade on Hogsmeade approved trips. The barrier of the grounds end at the start of the lake and the forest. However, students, with permission, may swim in the lake during the warmer months. Leaving school grounds unauthorized may be grounds for suspension or expulsion as this endangers the student, whom the school has taken responsibility for.

FORBIDDEN FOREST

The Forbidden Forest, as it has always been, is forbidden to students. Detention will not be served here due to the danger that the forest may hold. Students that attempt to become familiar with the forest, may be suspended or expelled.

DISCIPLINE
LOSS OF POINTS

If rules are broken or inappropriate behavior is displayed, the most frequent of discipline is the loss of House Points. House points are meant to unite the houses, giving them an opportunity to work as a team to obtain the House Cup at the end of the year. Losing points poorly reflects on the student's willingness to be a member of the team. Prefects, Headboy, Headgirl, and faculty are all able to deduct points from students for their less than pleasing behavior. Prefects may only take house points away from those in their own house and they may not take points away from another prefect. The points that are taken by a Prefect will be reviewed by their Head of House to ensure that it is properly retracted. Serious offenses such as, including but not limited to, theft, sexual misconduct, improper use of magic, and intense bullying may be subject to skipping over simply the loss of points and straight towards detention, suspension, or expulsion.

DETENTION

Prefects, Headboy and girl, and faculty are able to assign detentions to students that have broken school rules. The types of detention given vary by the person giving the detention and by the infraction that caused this response. A student to receive detention will be given at least a 24-hour notice of such an occasion.

SUSPENSION

Certain infractions may be subject to suspension, such as the repeat of breaking rules, skipping detention, or those that were listed under the loss of points as serious offenses. There are two types of suspension that may be given. In-house suspension means that the student must remain with the Headmaster or their Head of House for the entirety of the day, barring meals. Out-of-house suspension means that the student is to remain in their dormitory for the entirety of the day, being checked up on sporadically by those of authority to ensure that they have not left. Meals will be brought to the student during out-of-house suspension. If a student finds that they are suspended, their parent or guardian will be directly notified and a meeting will occur between the parent/guardian, the student, and the Headmaster.

EXPULSION

There are some instances where expulsion seems to be the only necessary action to take against a student for their lack of care for following the rules. The use of using certain spells, such as the Unforgiveable Curses, is grounds for immediate expulsion and for review by the Improper Use of Magic Department. Students that are deemed to be a danger to other students, faculty, or creatures of Hogwarts may be expelled from the School for the safety of all. If a student finds that they are expelled, their parent or guardian will be directly notified and a meeting will occur between the parent/guardian, the student, and the Headmaster.

The use of loss of points, detention, suspension, or expulsion may be argued if the student disagrees with the action that has been taken. They may bring up their disagreement directly with the Headmaster, and she will address the issue in a timely manner.
