but she's an angel
with no halo
And one wing in the fire

He knew that she was worried, and he could understand why, she was sick, and she wasn’t going to handle that well. But he thought that they would be okay. He thought that they would figure it out. And he knew that it was something that was naïvely hopeful. But he thought that he had to stay hopeful, and he had to stay calm. If he didn’t, she was going to panic even more. He knew that they couldn’t risk that. They had to stay calm, and so he was doing his best. He was going to stay as calm as he could. That was the only thing that he could do right now. Vzá and Jack were okay, and that was all that he could hope for really. He would have liked it to spare his wife. But he knew that she could pull through this. That she would be okay. The children would have made him more nervous.

They were just kids, after all. But he knew that they were going to have more problems as they went along. He didn’t have much of a team left, mercifully their season was over, but he thought that it was still worth thinking about. They weren’t going to have much of a team. And they had canceled the league all together for the rest of the season. The Falcons had won, again, and he was slightly annoyed by that. Even if he had no real ties to any one team, Viktor thought that there was something annoying about the same team winning on record alone. They hadn’t played for it, they hadn’t had it out on the pitch. He thought that he would have called it, with no real winner, if he was Graves. But it wasn’t his call, and he didn’t want it to be.

As much as Viktor loved quidditch, he loved it better on the pitch than he would have been behind a desk. The last place that he wanted to end up was in the regulations and the control of quidditch. There was so much more to it than that. There was so much more to all of it. Because he was sure that there were plenty of people that knew more about all of it than he did. He still didn’t think that he would have made that choice. It wasn’t his to worry about though, he thought that he needed to focus on Rae, and making sure that she was okay. Convincing her that she was going to be okay was a far cry harder than he thought that just telling himself that was going to be. She was going to lose her magic. They had seen it happening all around them. And so far, there was no cure.

Viktor was worried about everyone that he cared about. He was worried about Rae, and he was worried about Cissa. He was worried about the Potters, stuck on that island, with no way to get to help… He didn’t think that Harry, Mione, or the kids were showing any symptoms of anything, but he was still worried. Viktor was just trying to be calmer about it. There couldn’t be any worry in his voice, he wouldn’t let anyone see him worry. Grabbing the tea that he had had sitting on the stove he poured it into two mugs and headed for the living room. She had migrated downstairs earlier, and he thought that he would end up carrying her back up the stairs later on, but for now she looked comfortable enough.

He kissed the top of her head as he came up behind the couch, and he handed her the tea as he sat down next to her. “How are you feeling?” She couldn’t be feeling too great, but he thought that it was worth asking her instead of just assuming that she wasn’t okay.

[attr="class","cbody"]When the state of emergency had first been announced, Desirae could admit that she hadn’t even realized that so many people were sick. There really hadn’t been any reason for her to know that. They were all the way up here in Scotland and it seemed like it had originated in London, at least based off of how quickly it had spread. It only made sense that it would have started to spread in Diagon Alley or the Ministry or something.
[break][break]
All the way up in Scotland, everything had still seemed perfectly normal to her. She supposed that was what happened when she didn’t get out of the house all that much.
[break][break]
But then, of course, nothing had been perfectly normal. Once they had found out about the state of emergency, it had been difficult not to worry. They had mostly just stayed up in Scotland, at the tower. If they didn’t leave or go anywhere, then there was far less of a chance of them getting sick. Desirae knew that such a solution wouldn’t last all that long, but it had been worth a shot. When she had started to feel sick a few days before, a part of her had wanted to believe that it could just be something else. Anything else, actually.
[break][break]
She just didn’t think there was much of a reason to believe in coincidences. It wasn’t exactly cold and flu season. Getting sick with the same symptoms as the epidemic was not a coincidence. She had known that it would only be a matter of time until she started to feel worse and worse, and she had just tried to prepare herself for that to happen. And it had. Of course, it had.
[break][break]
Today had been the first day that she’d woken up with a fever. No matter what she did, she hadn’t seemed to be able to get it to go down. One moment she was sweating, the next she had the chills. There hadn’t been a moment of the day since she had woken up where she had been comfortable. In fact, she had been quite tempted to just stay in bed all day and not even attempt to go anywhere else.
[break][break]
Instead, she had told herself that she’d feel much better if she actually managed to get up and make it to the couch, so that was what she had done.
[break][break]
There was no telling if she would ever end up leaving the couch now that she’d made it there, but at least she had done something. Really, she thought that she should probably stay here and let Viktor stay in their room, because she didn’t want to infect him. It might be too late to worry about that but since he wasn’t sick yet, she was going to worry about that. She didn’t know how it was passed from person to person. It was better not to risk it.
[break][break]
She hadn’t even realized that Viktor had been approaching—certainly not in time to stop him from kissing her head, but she took the tea from him with a small smile before reprimanding him. “No kissing. I don’t want to get you sick.” Besides, she was all sweaty from her fever and she didn’t want to gross him out. They hadn’t been married long enough for her to subject him to fever sweats. In her opinion, anyway. “I’m just… you know. Cold. And then hot, and then cold again.” It was miserable and she knew that the symptoms were only going to get worse. That was what she had heard, anyway.

but she's an angel

Viktor knew that it sounded horrible, but he was glad that out of the three of them, it had been Desirae, and not the children that had gotten sick. And he knew that that sounded awful, but he also thought that she would understand the sentiment behind it. Jack was still so little, and Vzá wasn’t grown. They were just kids. Desirae could handle being sick. She would recover, and they would figure out what came next. But watching their children suffer would have been unbearable.

He was already having a time knowing that Rae was sick and there wasn’t anything that he could do about it. Viktor wasn’t a healer, he couldn’t make her feel better. All he could do was hope that she was going to be okay. That this wasn’t going to hit as hard as it had been hitting some of the others. He knew that some people were sicker than others. That fevers had been terrible, and some had barely been there at all. When she had started getting sick, he had gotten all of the information that he could. And he had seen it hit people at different rates. Because he had watched it hit Narcissa last week. And it had hit Ivy the week before that.

Why it wasn’t touching him he had no idea, but Viktor wasn’t going to complain. One of them keeping their magic was good. They were going to need it. With two little kids, and a castle that they had to maintain, he thought that it was best that someone still had it. She was his concern right now though, he knew that she was going to try and be brave, but she didn’t need to be. She could panic. Or she could cry. She could sleep through all of this if that was what she wanted. He just wanted her to be okay, and to know that they were going to be okay. They would figure it out. They always did. Somehow, they always figured it out.

He had made a promise to protect her. And protecting her was exactly what he intended to do. Now more than ever. He was going to make sure that she was okay. And he knew that the threat to her had been taken care of. He had witnessed that, he had seen the man die. He had gotten rid of the body. And it was one of those secrets that bound people together. It was something that they didn’t talk about. But they knew that that was the moment when they had really sealed their fate. They were together, from there on out. He had made his choice to go after her. To protect her. And he was going to keep protecting her.

Viktor smiled softly and shook his head. “If I’m going to get it, I’m already going to get it. You’re sick. Cissa’s sick. I’m exposed.” There was no doubt about that. The two people that he spent the most time around in a week were sick, if he was going to get it, he was going to get it. Whether he kissed the top of her head or not. “That’s the fever. Drink your tea, it might help.” Viktor had no idea if tea helped with a fever, but he wanted her to drink it anyway. She needed to get something in her, and he doubted that she was going to agree to trying to eat anything.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]When the state of emergency had been announced, she had been worried. Not for them, not necessarily. They were all the way up here in Scotland and she had wanted to think that they were going to be safe up here. They didn’t go to London all that often anyway. Viktor did for the museum sometimes, but it wasn’t somewhere that they went every day. Surely, they would be okay up at the tower. She had wanted to think that.
[break][break]
She had still gotten more worried as the days had gone on and had stayed in the tower more and more often. They would be fine. That was what she had kept telling herself, and for a while they had been. Viktor hadn’t gotten sick, the kids were fine, and she had thought that they were going to be okay.
[break][break]
But now she was sick. She was feeling worse by the day and she knew that it was only going to be a matter of time until her wand was a useless piece of wood. A matter of time until she wouldn’t be able to do even the simplest charms. And she supposed she couldn’t even call the wand useless, because it wasn’t it. It was her. She was going to be the useless one.
[break][break]
Desirae hadn’t wanted to think that it mattered all that much. She helped run a hotel, she helped run a museum. She homeschooled Vzá, she took care of her and took care of Jack. None of that required magic. So, surely, she was going to be okay, wasn’t she?
[break][break]
It had just proven to be a bit harder for her to wrap her head around than she’d expected. Desirae didn’t know if it was better or worse to know what was coming. When the epidemic had first hit, the people that had originally started getting sick hadn’t known what was coming. Not until it had happened. They didn’t have to sit around with a fever and a headache, knowing that the worst was yet to come. They didn’t have to count down the minutes, knowing that it was only a matter of time until they couldn’t do magic at all. In some ways, she thought that might have been better. And worse, obviously. They also hadn’t known if they were going to get better at all, or if they would continue to get sicker. They didn’t know if the flu was going to kill them. There had just been no way for them to know anything that was going to happen to them.
[break][break]
At least she knew that this wasn’t going to kill her. Probably not, anyway. There were people that had died from it, she had heard about that, but they seemed to be people who were already sick, or older witches and wizards. She was healthy, relatively speaking. She was young. So, unless something went horribly wrong, she shouldn’t die from this. It was a relief to know that, obviously, but in some ways, she thought the first lot had had it better. They hadn’t known what was coming.
[break][break]
Desirae pushed the thoughts from her mind and focused on Viktor. She didn’t want to be depressing. Not when he was so worried and trying so hard to help. “We could at least try to be careful…” There was still a chance that he was fine, and she didn’t want to risk changing that by him kissing her when she was all feverish. She was gross anyway. “Okay, okay,” Desirae said, with a small smile, before taking a sip of her tea. She didn’t know how much it was actually going to help, but if it made him feel better for her to give it a shot, that was worth it.

but she's an angel

And one wing in the fire

He knew that they were worried. Viktor knew that everyone was worried, but he thought that Desirae was going to be okay. Or at least that she wasn’t going to die. He didn’t think that she was going to die. And maybe that was his biggest fear. Losing her for real. He didn’t think that that was a real fear. He didn’t think that she was going to die. But he was still worried. He knew that she was worried too. He could tell by just looking at her, but they would figure it out. Even without her magic, he thought that it was going to be fine.

Because that’s what this was doing. This was robbing every one of their magic. It was taking away that one thing that made them truly unique. And Viktor thought that it was a lot more complicated than that, but that also seemed like the most accurate explanation. He thought that that was how he was going to explain this to Vzá when she asked what was wrong with Rae, and why they hadn’t seen Cissa in so long. She was only nine. She wasn’t going to understand. And he knew that she wasn’t going to understand. But he had to tell her something.

Telling her that magic was getting sick seemed like the best thing. But he didn’t know how to tell her that either. They were going to have to figure something out, but in the meantime, he thought that he would just have to do the best that he could to take care of Rae. Because he knew that she was going to try and tell him that she was fine, and she wasn’t. He knew that by looking at her. She wasn’t fine, and she seemed to be getting worse as the days dragged on. Whatever this was, it was taking its toll. Not just on her, but on everyone.

He had seen it. He had seen it coming after everyone. And so far, he hadn’t seemed to get sick himself, but he didn’t think that that necessarily meant he wouldn’t. He just might have had a stronger immune system than the witches around him. That seemed like it could have been a possibility, and until he knew for sure that he wasn’t going to get it, he was going to bide his time. He was just going to have to wait and see. And that was probably worse than knowing he was going to get sick. If he knew, he could be ready. This was just a lot of not knowing.

They didn’t know a lot of things, and it was starting to get to him. He knew that it was starting to get to all of them, but he thought that it was something that they could work through. It was something that they could figure out. They had to. Right? He nodded when Desirae said that they could limit exposure. “You’re right. But I just feel bad. You’re sick, and I’m not. And we don’t know why…” He knew that he couldn’t feel too bad that one of them hadn’t gotten sick. The kids needed someone healthy. But he wished that it was the other way around.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]There had been nothing to be done to stop this from happening. From the moment that they’d first heard about the epidemic, maybe a part of her had known that it was only a matter of time until it reached them up in Scotland. Even if it seemed to spread like wildfire throughout London and the rest of England, she’d known that it was spreading in Scotland too. They weren’t going to be entirely unscathed by it. It was naïve to think like that, and she knew it. Maybe a part of her had still hoped, had still thought that maybe they would be all right, but deep down, she had known that there was no way to shield their family from this.
[break][break]
But she was glad that Viktor hadn’t gotten sick. She knew that he felt guilty about it. That if he could choose, he’d rather be sick than her, because she knew how important protecting her was to him. It just wasn’t possible to protect her from everything.
[break][break]
He had already saved her life once before. If it wasn’t for him, if it wasn’t for Andromeda, Desirae knew that she wouldn’t be here today. That if Vince hadn’t killed her, she would at least still be trapped in that house—and honestly, being trapped there for that long would have been far worse than him just killing her. But, by now, she thought he probably would have tired of her anyway. Regardless of what would have happened, she was safe, and that was because of Viktor. It was because of Andromeda. Without them, she wouldn’t be here.
[break][break]
Yet her husband couldn’t protect her from absolutely everything in the world that could hurt her. She knew that he would if he could. But he couldn’t stop an epidemic. He couldn’t stop her from getting sick and she didn’t want him to feel guilty about that. She didn’t want him to think that he should be sick instead, because she would be fine. Magic had been taken from her once before and as much as that stung, thinking about Vince finally getting his way, she could live without magic. She would live without magic. But she couldn’t imagine Viktor without his. She couldn’t imagine him not being able to fly. That was important to him. And more than anything else, she just wanted him to be happy.
[break][break]
If there was a way for her to stop him fretting over her and how she was feeling, she thought she’d do that too. But she wasn’t all that great at acting okay around him. There was a time when a mask was second nature to her, but she knew that Viktor would see through any of her attempts to act like she was all right—and honestly, she didn’t really have the energy to move from the couch. Even if she wanted to be up and about, acting like she was okay, she couldn’t. Truly, she couldn’t imagine making it to the kitchen to get more tea, let alone to the greenhouse to work or to tidy up around the house.
[break][break]
She couldn’t imagine making it up to their bedroom tonight either. Maybe she should just sleep on the couch. That would solve that, and it would also ease her concerns that she was going to get Viktor sick. Not sleeping next to him might lessen those chances, after all. But that was just a problem that she’d save for later. “It’s okay. I’ll be fine…” She smiled to emphasize her point, but a cough interrupted the attempt and she brought a hand to her mouth to cover it. Once the coughing fit had ended, she reached forward for her tea again, hoping to ease her increasingly sore throat. “And I’m glad you’re not sick.” Desirae added, once she’d taken a sip from her mug.

but she's an angel
with no halo
And one wing in the fire

This wasn’t easy. Watching her be sick was not something that he had ever wanted to think about, but here they were. And there was nothing that he could do about it. Viktor thought that honestly that might have been the hardest part. That there was nothing that they could do about it. There were people sick all over the place, and they were just dealing with it. They were trying to make sense of all of it. Magic was sick. Magic was what they were losing, and he didn’t think that anyone had any answers. He doubted that they would be sharing them if they did, but still. There had to be people working on this.

It wasn’t something that they were just going to let sit. It wasn’t something that they were just going to let be. And he knew that he had to try and be the optimistic one. He was the one that wasn’t sick. Which didn’t make any sense either. If one of them was going to get sick, he thought that it would have been him. But it wasn’t. He was fine. And while he was glad that Vzá and Jack were both fine, it was hard to try and think that she was the only one. That there was something about him that just made him different. That made him not get sick from this.

He knew that he was in no way equipped to answer those questions. But he couldn’t help that they were on his mind. It was what was on everyone’s mind. And he thought that not thinking about it would just cause more of a headache than letting the thoughts come. He didn’t have that control. He had never bothered to learn. Though now he wasn’t sure that that hadn’t been a poor choice in the end. He knew that he would have had it a whole lot easier if he could just block some of the worry out. If he didn’t have to think about all of it.

All he could really do was try and take care of his wife. As much as she would let him anyway. He didn’t know what would help, he didn’t know what she needed. Other than a healer. But he also knew that she would only accept one healer near her, and that particular witch had a whole lot more on her plate right now than he even wanted to consider. He knew not to call a healer. He knew that that would never be accepted. But he couldn’t do nothing either. He could bring tea, and he could sit with her.

He could kiss her head and tell her that this was all going to be okay. That was all that any of them could do. Give each other some sort of hope. Even if, in the end, that hope turned out to be false. Her cough was deep, and he worried, but he knew that nothing was helping. He had sent an owl for some cough suppressants, and something to ease the ache in her throat, but he didn’t know how much better they would do than a little honey or lemon in her tea. “You will be.” He was sure of that. She wasn’t going to die from this, but he was worried that it was going to take something else. “I’m more pleased that the kids are alright. That would have been torture. On them, and us.”

[attr="class","cbody"]She knew that she just needed to look on the bright side. She knew that absolutely no good would come from her worrying about things that she couldn’t change. Getting sick wasn’t something that she had control over. It had happened, and now she was just going to have to try her best to get through the worst of the symptoms. Once they faded, once her magic was gone, then she was just going to have to try to adapt to that as well. Taking it one step at a time was really the only option that she had. At the end of this, she would at least feel better. If she wanted to look at the bright side, at the silver lining, then that was certainly it. She would be okay, all things considered, once she got better.
[break][break]
Living without magic was something that she had done before. Not like this, of course. It hadn’t been anything like this. But she had gone without magic before. She might have still had it within her, she might have just been without a wand, but she did know how to get by without magic. It was something that she had learned while living with Vince, and she knew that would help with keeping the house in order, at least. She knew how to clean and cook the Muggle way, and that would help. She had her hobbies that didn’t require magic. The greenhouse was still her favorite place on their property and it wasn’t as if she was going to lose that once her magic was gone. She wanted to think that she was going to be okay, but there was just no way to know. Desirae didn’t like knowing what was coming. In some ways, she thought that made it so, so much worse—because all she could do was wait. She knew what was coming, and there was nothing to do but sit around and wait for the inevitable.
[break][break]
Desirae was glad that Viktor hadn’t gotten sick. In her mind, that would have been so much worse. With how much he loved flying, she couldn’t imagine that being taken away from him. She didn’t have something like that in her life. Something that she loved so much that she wouldn’t be able to do after this, but flying was that for Viktor, and she was glad that hadn’t been taken away from him.
[break][break]
Yet, anyway. They had no way of knowing if he was going to get sick too. She hoped that he wouldn’t, that he would be okay. Merlin knew that he had been around her enough that she would have thought he’d have gotten infected by her already. Or Narcissa. Nearly everyone around them was sick so surely, he had gotten exposed already. If he hadn’t gotten sick yet, she was just going to hope that he wasn’t going to. It was better that at least one of them was healthy. She’d much rather it be him. Even though she felt miserable, even though she knew that there was really nothing that they could do to improve upon her symptoms, even though there was a chance that she’d have poor enough luck for this to somehow kill her, she would much rather be the sick one. She couldn’t imagine seeing Viktor sick, and she really didn’t want to.
[break][break]
Taking another sip of her tea, she nodded in agreement at Viktor’s words. “I don’t even know what I would have done if they’d gotten sick.” It would be so much worse to see the kids suffering through something that they couldn’t do anything to fix. It would have been absolutely awful. “You promise you still feel all right?” Desirae added. Honestly, she was tempted to check his forehead to see if he had a fever and that he wasn’t just trying to act like he was all right so that she didn’t worry. He looked fine, but looks could be deceiving sometimes..

but she's an angel
with no halo
And one wing in the fire

Viktor was worried, and he knew that worrying wasn’t really going to do him any good, but he couldn’t help it. He knew that he was going to worry about her until she was feeling better, and even then, he had heard what this was actually doing to people. It was taking something from them and not giving it back, and he didn’t think that that was going to do anything to make him worry less. He knew that she was going to struggle with that. There was something about losing that that was going to be all too familiar. He had read the books. The ones that Andromeda had sent him… He knew what he was supposed to watch for then, and he knew what to watch for now.

A relapse, of sorts. He knew that it could not happen too. There was really no telling what was going to come of all of this. And he thought that only time would answer that question for him. He was going to have to try and just go with the flow until then. Help her with the kids, the house, anything else that he could do. He didn’t know what she was going to need, or how she was going to feel. But he did know that he wanted to help her any way that he could.

That’s what he was here for. They were a team now. The two of them, and it was a little team, yes, but that was how marriage was supposed to work. They were supposed to take care of one another. And he thought that for the most part, they did. Him not being sick right now was both good, and bad. If he got this later on, if his immune system was simply holding out until she was done being sick, then he thought that they were in this for a long time. If he never got sick, he didn’t quite know how to explain that either.

Because he wasn’t special. Not really. He had some rather impressive athletic abilities, but he wasn’t special in any other way. No way that was going to make him immune to some illness that they didn’t explain. He was grateful that the kids seemed to be fine as well. That would have been even harder to deal with than him being sick. If they kids were as sick and miserable as Desirae had been for the last few days, he didn’t know how they were going to handle that. Jack especially. Vzá was big enough that he thought that she would be fine, but Jack was still little.

He was only a few months old, and he had been born small enough that Andromeda had cast more than a few growth spells on him to make sure that he was going to be okay. Whatever she had done had worked. He was the size of a normal three-month-old baby, but Viktor knew that that wasn’t going to stop them from worrying about him. And Desirae would have been more concerned with him than she was with herself, which could have just made both of them even sicker if they weren’t careful.

“I’m fine.” He didn’t know how to explain the fact that he was, but he really seemed to be. “But I know exactly what you would have done. You would have been so focused on them that you ran yourself into the ground and I had to carry you up three flights of stairs to bed.” There was a smirk to his words, but that didn’t make them any less true. He really did think that she would have given her all to take care of them and neglected to take care of herself.

[attr="class","cbody"]Desirae didn’t know how something like this happened, in all honesty. But she supposed that was the problem. Nobody did. This was obviously unlike anything that anybody had ever seen. If it wasn’t, then they would have found a cure. There would have already have been a cure, somewhere out there in the world. But nothing had happened. Nobody had come up with anything yet, because this was not something that anybody had seen before. And that worried her. It was hard looking in the face of something unknown. It was hard not knowing what was going to happen. There were thousands of people in the same boat, though she didn’t know if that made her feel better or worse.
[break][break]
In some ways, she did think it made her feel better. She was not the only one that was going through this. It wasn’t just her. This wasn’t something that she was in alone. If she needed to talk to someone about it, she could take her pick, because she knew plenty of people that had already gotten sick. But it also didn’t make her feel better. It was hard not to make it all feel a whole lot worse, knowing that this many people were sick but there was still no news, nothing to support them finding some kind of cure. There were barely enough people with magic left in the medical profession to look for a cure, honestly. That was worrisome.
[break][break]
It was a situation where she didn’t know how to feel. Every day, every hour really, it felt like she could have a completely different emotion bubbling to the surface. Worry, anger, sadness, fear, relief, hopelessness, and she knew that there were more. There could always be more. She was worried about herself, about what could happen if she got sicker or was one of the few that died from this. She was worried about Viktor and the kids, and if there was any chance at all that they could get sick too. She was worried about a cure and how long it would take to find one, if it was at all possible. She was angry that she had gotten sick—that Vince had tried to take her magic from her by controlling her and taking her wand away, and now he had gotten his way tenfold. Even gone from this world, he had somehow gotten his way and she was completely helpless to do anything about that.
[break][break]
She was sad about that loss, about the people she cared about and even that something like this could happen. It was miserable. Sometimes, she was half tempted to not even get out of bed in the morning—though that had a lot to do with her entire body aching, as well, and not just the fact that she was upset about what was happening. There was the obvious fear that there would never be a cure, that they would never find one, and she would never have magic again. Desirae knew that she would have to adapt and get used to that being a possibility. Even despite all of that, she could still manage to feel relief that Viktor wasn’t sick, that he was still okay. That was more important to her than her own health. Him being okay mattered to her more than anything else, except perhaps the kids. But since the epidemic didn’t seem to be impacting kids, Viktor had been her main worry.
[break][break]
Feeling all of that in waves had been exhausting, even if she tried to put on a good face. Viktor had enough to deal with, without having to experience that wave of emotions right along with her. “I’m sorry to report, but you’re still going to have to carry me up three flights of stairs,” she teased, raising her eyebrows at him. It was a miracle that she had even made it down here today, but she really did not like her chances of making it back up to their bedroom when it was time to go to sleep. It definitely did not seem like much of a possibility at this point.
