but she's an angel
with no halo
And one wing in the fire

He didn’t have any medical training; Viktor couldn’t have even patched up Vzá all that well if she had come into the house crying. He would have called Andromeda, or Hermione, or someone else that had been perfectly capable of making sure that she was fine. He didn’t know anything about that. But he thought that he could have done something. He would have been able to make it right. This though? He thought that even the most brilliant people that he knew didn’t know what they were doing with this one. That they were going to all be stumbling and figuring it out as they went.

As far as he knew, Hermione wasn’t sick, no one on Mermaid Isle seemed to be. But the rest of the world? Every time that he turned around it seemed that the people that he cared about here were getting sicker and sicker. Rae, her mum, Cissa, Fleur, he thought that they were all going to take the brunt of this, and still he hadn’t so much as coughed. It was strange to him, to think that they were going to just get sicker and sicker right in front of him, and he was going to be fine…

That couldn’t be right, he must just be having some sort of delayed reaction to it. There were more and more sick people by the day, and he didn’t think that they were just going to stop getting sick. Titania was sick, most of their team was sick. It was just sweeping through all of them, and Viktor was worried. They were all worried, but he knew that his worry existed on a number of levels. They didn’t know the ins and outs of all of this, they didn’t know who was going to get sick, and who was going to be fine.

There were too many questions. Too many things that they didn’t know. And he had to wonder if there was something more that they could do. If there was some way that she would have felt better. He knew that she didn’t really want to go to the hospital, and he hadn’t made her. She didn’t like healers, and she had only tolerated Andromeda being around her. But the Minister had more important things to do, and from what he had heard, she too had lost her magic. They all had. Everyone except him.

And that didn’t make any sense. He was exposed to more germs than Desirae was. She spent most of her time here, with the kids. Or at the hotel. But even the hotel wasn’t as crowded as London. It wasn’t as busy as the pitch. He had to have brought this home to her, and that made him feel bad. He had gotten her sick, and he wasn’t sick at all. But someone not being sick was probably for the best. It meant that they could stay on top of the kids. And he wasn’t great with knowing exactly what Jack needed all the time, but he was doing his best to help.

He hadn’t helped as much when Vzá had been a baby, and he had regretted it after he had lost her mother. There had been so much about her that he simply hadn’t known. It had caused some problems until his mother had helped him. And even then, he thought that he would have rather done it himself. There was a lot of him mother, and now Narcissa too, in Vzá. Everything that she was supposed to have learned as a lady. All of the things that he couldn’t teach her.

Rae could teach her important things. Math, and reading, and all of the things that she was going to need. But they couldn’t teach her to be a lady. Not like his mother. Not like Cissa. He chuckled lightly at her words, and he shook his head. “That’s alright. You weigh what? Five kilos? Might throw out my back with that super heavy load.” He knew that she weighed more than five kilos, but there was no denying that she was small. Carrying her up the stairs would be no trouble at all.

[attr="class","cbody"]She had wanted to think that they would be safe up here. That nothing could touch them at the tower. But she knew that just wasn’t reality. That wasn’t how life worked. She didn’t have to be a healer to understand that a fast spreading epidemic would reach just about everywhere. The fact that it had seemingly started in London did not mean that it was going to stay there. People traveled throughout the United Kingdom. People unintentionally infected others, that went on to travel as well. They couldn’t travel outside of the U.K., that was something, but it didn’t change the fact that it was bound to make it to them eventually.
[break][break]
It hadn’t made it to Mermaid Isle, though, which was good. Desirae was glad that the Potters weren’t having to deal with a magic-stealing epidemic on top of everything else. She was glad that they were all safe. And that did make sense. The epidemic had spread nearly everywhere, but somewhere entirely isolated like that island would be safe. With them not coming and going off of it, there was no way for the illness to reach them. No one that was infected was going anywhere near them. She had gone there in passing over the years that they had been there, but she was obviously not going to go there now. Viktor had been around enough sick people to avoid going there as well, just in case he was a carrier. They would be safe from the epidemic, at least.
[break][break]
Desirae supposed they could have gone up there too, if they had thought about it. They could have all been safe from the epidemic if they had sought refuge on the island too. But that just wasn’t practical. There wasn’t enough room there for two families anyhow, and she knew that it put the Potters at more of a risk if they were there too. Narcissa would know where to find them, at the very least. It just wasn’t realistic for them to go up there and try to ride out the infection, when there was so much that they didn’t even know about it. There was no way of knowing if they would have to stay out there for months and they had jobs to deal with. A hotel, a museum, Viktor had his coaching—up and leaving was just not an option. Not to hide from an epidemic that would likely reach them eventually anyway.
[break][break]
And it finally had. She had known that it was possible, and she hadn’t let naïve thoughts cross her mind too often. It was going to make its way up to Scotland eventually. She was going to get sick eventually. But Viktor hadn’t. For some reason, he was still all right, which was a relief. As much as she had not wanted to get sick herself, she would much prefer herself to be ill than him. Desirae could not imagine him sick like this, could not imagine him being unable to go out and fly—either alone or with Vzá. He needed his magic more than she needed hers. She would figure out how to get by.
[break][break]
At this point, she just wanted to stop feeling awful. She knew what would happen when this got further along, but eventually the symptoms would fade too. With how awful she felt, that was mostly what was on her mind. She just wanted to feel better. She just wanted the fever to break, her stomach to stop rolling, her head to stop pounding. She just wanted all of it to stop. The fact that she’d even made it out of bed today had been a miracle in and of itself, but now she knew that she’d likely end up living on this couch unless Viktor took her to bed later. “Hush, you. My butt weighs more than five kilos, let alone the rest of me.” He teased her enough about how tiny she was, but she also knew that it seemed like everything that she ate went right to her hips and her butt—not that she thought that he was complaining. Hopefully not, anyway. Setting her tea down on the coffee table, she shifted to lay down, tucking in her legs and putting her head in his lap. “We’re not going upstairs yet, right?” She thought that she would be comfy lying on him for a good long while.
