general appearance
Ana’s somewhat plainer than is typically expected than for someone of her lineage, even if she didn't have the long solemn face and distinct nose of the Orpingtons. Still, it’s a pleasant enough face softened by enough Urquart, and her blue-grey eyes are bright enough beneath their hoods. In her mind, her best feature is her hair, which she grows out to what is technically longer than practical for Occultism. Thick, wavey, and tawny, it’s lightest in her immediate family, even if it’s not so bright as her cousins’ hair.

She wears a few bracelets on her wrists, which were created to expand cushioning charms should tremors be detected. She's long and lean-- a good swimmer's build, and she's worked to keep it that way.

She's not so pretty. She knows that. After all these years, it doesn't bother her, unless there's some remark dropped about how it might be easier to find her a good marriage if she was. (Truthfully, that part doesn't phase her. A husband will only distract from her studying)

Voted Worst At Re-Meeting People in her yearbook, which might have been a category made specifically for her. She was well-liked, and it was apparently funny, okay

skills
WARDS: specifically Runic wards

CURIOSITY FINDING WEAKNESSES: she claims this is similar to making Runic circles, but . . .

PRETENDING SHE RECOGNIZES PEOPLE: this worked a lot better in both Durmstrang and Norway than it does here

ACCENTS: Recognizing and categorizing them, that is. She might be able to mimic if she tries, but. . .

SWIMMING: True, Gillyweed helps, but Ana's been a strong swimmer as long as she's known. She gets better and better at holding her breath-- she can go for about two and a half laps now.

MERMISH: Her Gillyweed obsession helped with the drive. She majored in it.
weaknesses
XAV, of course. Not that she doesn’t love her other family

APPEARANCE: she really thinks she peaked in Durmstrang

EPILEPTIC: Sort of. They were childhood seizures, mostly, but there’s still half-buried concern they might come back. It's happened a few times since, but Healers said they were unrelated. She had one or two with the magic-stealing fever, so . . . .

FACES: she’s partially face-blind. It takes some time to recognize people as more than hair style and clothing. That was fun in Durmstrang. you won’t believe how long it would take to reliably tell apart Vie and Rosie when she moved back to Manchester and saw them more often

CURIOSITY: it’s a double-edged sword, after all

QUIDDITCH: Yes, her brother got signed right out of school, and Ana can't dive five feet without panicking. It's not funny.
positive traits
Alert, calm, capable, contemplative, decisive, dedicated, disciplined, discrete, focused, hard-working, perceptive, rational, scholarly, self-reliant
negative traits
Artificial, brittle, calculating, complacent, cynical, disconcerting, fixed, hesitant, impulsive, narrow-minded, reactionary, strong-willed
hobbies/interests
Runes, occultism, nature

She's quite fond of Gillyweed and said benefits of the herb. Talking to mermaids is a fascinating thing.

Quite fond of playing with candles. Lit, usually-- there's something addicting about passing a finger through the flame. If not playing with them that way, she's watching them.

Going into research and experiments that might not be exactly ethical. They're called test subjects for a reason, after all.
accomplishments
she's five and half twenty-two. please.

character history
Ariana’s father might have been a second son, but he was able to gain approval from the Urquarts for their daughter. Who his mother was certainly made that easier. By that time he’d sought his wife, there’d already been two Orpingtons born to Uncle Eugene, and Vladimir was unlikely to inherit or to help himself to power. So in Manchester they lived in quiet contentedness, with Vladimir aiding and supporting the Dark Lord.

Before Ana and Xav were six months old, Ana came down with a bad fever. Xav got one too, but his was much lighter, much easier. Ana’s required a frantic trip to St Mungo’s and a stay of some time. She wasn’t quite the same when she got out, and her parents found that out the next fever Ana got. And the one after that, as Ana’s seizures became more common. The move to Norway helped some-- that was after the Dark Lord fell, of course.

All was well and quiet, when Ana wasn’t ill. The Orpingtons lived in isolated Finnmark, free with magic and disposals. Ana received her acceptance to Durmstrang at the proper time, to some admitted worry. True, her seizures were lessening, but they still did happen when she caught fever. Her parents wanted to keep her home, but Xav argued for her, saying as her twin he’d be able to care for her some, and all the Healers said she would grow out of it. That convinced their parents, and Ana was allowed to go.

The first several weeks were hard, as Ana struggled to recognize people when their hair and robes changed often. Even before she was fully able to tell one girl from the next, Ana was becoming liked, outsider that she was. The first time she had a seizure in class, Ana was deeply ashamed. True, she had no control over this, but she’d been doing well. She’d hoped she’d finally left them behind, but she’d found herself to be wrong. After that, she spent significant amounts of time in the Hospital Wing whenever her temperature rose, just in case. She was no longer allowed to fly unless she was at the best of health.

Ana had never really cared for flying, but the dismissal of it pained her. It marked her out, opened her to scorn. Arianna Orpington couldn’t fly, just like she often didn’t know who she was talking to. Months passed without ill effect, and slowly Ana was allowed the privilege of a broom, provided she wasn’t running a fever, was not alone, and wore her Cushioning Charm bracelets around her wrists.

Durmstrang was surrounded by lakes, everyone knew that. Which lakes and where, that isn't so popularly known, but that's besides the point. Ana decided during her months of being grounded-on-probation, that if she could not fly in the air, she would fly in the water. Her first several attempts were unsuccessful, especially as ice-freezing was drawing near. It was an older student who saved her, who handed her a ball of Gillyweed. Said older student was likely a combination drunk, high, and trying to get rid of evidence. And Ana, without Xav at her side, swallowed the slimy mass, and took her first steps in a world truly without her brother.

Durmstrang changed after that, was lovely and beautiful the times it was warm enough to swim. Occasionally, Ana would break the ice and try anyway. Hypothermia was nothing, compared to this glory. Xav was furious when he found out, made sure she would only do it when the lakes weren't frozen overs. Still-- her seizures were few and far between now, so there was little he could do.

Years passed. Ana visited her cousins and they visited her, Ana did clubs, Ana learned people by hairstyles and by accents and by clothing styles. She learned to really recognize people-- eventually, if she knew them well. She graduated from Durmstrang, started University, and chose her majors in the two she considered most important. She graduated soon enough, and her family decided to move back to Manchester, the home she barely remembered. Finnmark was home, more than anything, but she bit her tongue and let herself adjust.

She's really not pleased at the sudden lack of magic, but what can she say? She's supposed to be home again, after all. Her bracelets still work, at least. They ought to, at least, because she made this version of them when she still had all her magic.

family history
Tegan Isobel Orpington, mother of Ana and Xav, was born to an Urquart father and a MacDougal mother.

The Urquart family is a pureblood family that is primarily based in the Orkney Islands of Scotland, although some Urquarts have moved to more populated parts of Scotland in recent years. They have mostly maintained pureblood tradition, from teaching their children proper etiquette from a young age to encouraging associations with other pureblood families - both friendly and romantic. Although a rather minor pureblood family that has not been recognized as "Sacred"  and let me tell you, they are bitter about this  they claim that their pureblood ancestors were the Norwegian Vikings that settled on the islands in the late 8th century. Historically, they have associated with other minor pureblood families and have earned a reputation as the peacemakers and diplomats of pureblood circles. Due to their commitment to maintaining propriety, high standards, and beneficial relationships, Urquarts are almost always Slytherins - although there's always an exception to prove the rule.

The MacDougal family is a pureblood family that has lived in Wales since approximately the tenth century. Most of their records show that they weren't strict believers in blood purity - somewhere between "all magical folk are equal" and "but you're not good enough for my daughter, muggleborn." Nevertheless, over the years, these ideals became diluted. This was mostly a byproduct of the MacDougals associating more with lesser known pureblood families as opposed to what would one day become known as the Sacred Twenty-Eight. These families included the Urquarts, the Browns, the Blishwicks, and the Maxes, among many others. Most MacDougals were raised with ideals of a good work ethic, perseverance, and the importance of family, which meant that the majority were sorted into Slytherin, with a smattering of Ravenclaw here and there.

(all of above snagged from cousin Vie)

Vladimir Alexander Orpington, father of Xav and Ana, was born to a Gage mother and his (obviously) Orpington father.

The Gage family is a strictly pureblood family hailing from Paris, France. While they were once very exclusive within their nation, they began forming arrangements with pureblood British families after the fall of Grindewald. They have remained steadfast about schooling their children through Beauxbatons school, a long standing tradition which they do not intend on breaking. This family is notoriously strong in their sense of duty. Daughters of the Gage family are often betrothed before their graduation from the school and marry quite young. Sons of the Gage family are typically married young as well and have always been able to produce heirs rather quickly.
(snagged from distant cousin Alden)

The Orpington is a pureblood family that had been found in Manchester since the Hanging Bridge was erected. Academically inclined, the Orpington family never put down quite solid roots in one speciality or another, forming a collection of electric interests and careers. while purist, their status was never quite enough that they were very well-known. Still, appearances mattered, and the Orpingtons were always quick to align themselves with families they saw as gaining in power. The family claims members of such renown such as Minister Evangeline Orpington, one of the most popular and best-liked Ministers of Magic. While admittedly, she is the most known Orpington, she's still very much so someone to be proud of.
